Best BIOS

What is the best *STABLE* BIOS for the MSI K8N Neo4 Plat.? I've been hearing different things about different versions and I cant find a definate answer by searching the forums....

BF,
Post your system details in your signature block it will make it easier to advise you. You can also look at other members signature block to find a system close to yours and then ask what bios they use if not depicted in their sig block. In the end however you will still have to try it on your system and benchmark it to see how it performs for you. Just remember not to flash unless you have something positive to gain.
If v1.6 is good stick with it.
Good luck,

Best BIOS setting for MSI K8N Plat + AMD 3000+ Venice + Geil Value RAM

If you want SSE3 support and you do not overclock, Bios 1.4 is the only one officially available (1.41beta is not official).
Try to upgrade to 1.4 and see it for yourself, do the upgrade with floppy in DOS so that you can save your old Bios.
I would rather wait till mid June when a less troublesome new bios is suppose to be availabe for NEO4 MBs.

  • Diamond Plus best bios.

So ive heard about the 3.0a and the 1.10 which is the best bios...

In responce to what Bas say's it does just plain rock!!!!! I just installed bios 1.2 beta  switching from my original board bios 1.0 and I now have function of my Marvell yukon networking controller also this bios ads more options in the bios control panel! Also i would like to ad that if you are new to these forums and new to owning a MSI  MOTHERBOARD as i am please take note that if you do not have experience with flashing these boards and wish to download the Bios 1.2 beta 2 zip above it DOES NOT come with the fash utility reuired to flash youre bios you must also download youre proper board bios file from MSI and save to disk then unzip the file open and explore the folder you will see the flash utility  AFUD404.EXE in the folder right click on that and send to floppy drive A:\  that alredy has zip file A7220NMS.122  on it!!!!!
FOR BEGINNERS LIKE ME!!!! HERE'S THE PROCESS IF YOU WISH TO USE A FLOPPY DRIVE TO FLASH YOURE BIOS.
Start bye going to bootdisk.com download the the WIN 98 BOOT DISK OEM THAT HAS RAM DRIVE!!!!!!! Once youve downloaded that It will prompt you to put a blank floppy disk in A:\  Let it do its thing when it finishes go to run command   type  chkdsk a: /r   this process will confirm the integrity of the floppy and fix any bad sectors if their are any !
#2 download the bios 1.22 beta file that is above that Bas has generously provided ! download and save to disk preferably the desktop double click on the file  you have to extract the file instead of compressed folder default click browse and select drive A:\ to extract the file to. now you have a floppy with the 1.22 bios file on it! leave the floppy in drive A:\
#3 go to MSI website and download the most recent bios for youre motherboard! open the bios file from MSI with default compressed folder let it unzip then open the folder to viewthe contents you ewill see 4 files in their  RIGHT CLICK ON THE AFUD404.EXE AND SEND IT TO THE FLOPPY DRIVE A:\
#4 now you have the neccessary files to flash youre bios to version 1.22 .....   These are the 2 files that should be on the floppy disk in A:\  A7220nms.122 & AFUD404.EXE
#5 Open run cmd again  and run    chkdsk a: /r   to verify contents & integrity of  youre 2 files!!!!
#6 Go to the desktop and reopen the bios folder that you have downloaded from MSI that you transfered the AFUD404.EXE FLASH UTILITY FROM TO DRIVE A:\  YOU WILL SEE  A INSTRUCTION FILE ON HOW TO FLASH YOURE BIOS PRINT THAT PAGE!!!!!!! On the page that you have just printed you will refer to the section that say...' 'FLASHING BIOS FOR NON FAT FILE SYSTEM'  Read and study this section, this is the method you will be useing!!!!
#7 Restart system and enter BIOS setup  LOAD FAIL SAFE DEFAULT SETTING'S  SAVE AND EXIT when computer reboots go into BIOS once again and double check that fail safe default settings are enabled. MAKE SURE THAT BOOT SECTOR PROTECTION IS DIABLED!!!!! AND ALSO THAT YOURE SET TOO BOOT FROM FLOPPY!    Now isert youre WIN 98 BOOT FLOPPY in floppy drive, save and exit!!!!!
#8 you will now see that WINDOWS 98 is loading select the option #1 CDROM SUPPORT LET IT LOAD DIAGNOSTIC TOOL'S UNTIL YOU COME TO A:\ PROMPT!!!!  Now stop for a second and carefully read what is on the screen it will tell you where the RAM DRIVE RESIDES!!!  ON MY SYSTEM DOING THIS THE RAM DRIVE RESIDED ON C:\    " DEPENDING ON YOURE HARDWARE THE DRIVE LETTER ALLOCATION MAY DIFFER FROM MY SITUATION"
THAT'S WHY YOU SHOULD PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT YOURE SCEEN SAY'S!!!!! I myself was a meathead and failed to notice that it was allocated to C:\
I thought that A:\ where you type was the RAM DRIVE !!!! THat's becaus I didnt read the screen carefully and  PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT THE SCREEN SAID!!!!!!
#9 Now that you have located wher the RAM DRIVE resides......" EJECT" THE WIN 98 FLOPPY!!!! and replace it with youre BIOS FLOPPY  now refer to the Bios Flashing instruction sheet that you printed out,    [YOU DID PRINT IT OUT, AND STUDY IT DIDN'T YOU?????]
HERES EXACTLY HOW IT SHOULD LOOK WHEN YOU TYPE THIS!!!!  I WILL GIVE ACTUAL EXAMPLES 1-3  OF WHAT YOU SHOULD TYPE IN  A:\
    A:\COPY AFDU404.EXE    [PRESS ENTER]                  {          {'SPACES BETWEEN PARAMETERS IS VERY IMPOTANT!!!!!}
    A:\COPY A7220NMS.122  [PRESS ENTER]                  {   A:\COPY AFUD404.EXE          NOT THIS  -  A:\COPYAFUD404.EXE }
    A:\AFUD404.EXE A7220NMS.122 /P /B /N /C   [PRESS ENTER]             {   NOT THIS   -   A:\AFUD404.EXEA7220NMS.122/P/B/N/C
THE LAST COMMAND IS THE ONE THAT ACTUALLY FLASHS THE BIOS, AFTER YOU HAVE COPIED THE 2 FILES TO THE RAM DRIVE!!!!!!!
NOW YOU WILL SEE THE AMI BIOS GOING THROUGH THE FLASH PROCEEDURE. DO NOT TURN TURN OFF YOURE COMPUTER UNTIL THE FLASH PROCESS HAS COMPLETELY FINISHED!!!!!!!!
YOU WILL KNOW WHEN THE FLASH PROCESS IS FINISHED, IT IS FINISHED WHEN YOU GO BACK TO   A:\     "'PROMPT"
[JUST TO BE SAFE] WAIT A COUPLE OF MINUTES AFTER YOU ARE ON  A:\ PROMPT
#10 PRESS THE POWER BUTTON,  AND TURN OF YOURE COMPUTER ' COMPLETELY'
UNPLUG ALL POWER CONNECTIONS COMEING INTO YOURE SYSTEM [EVERYTHING]  FLIP THE SWITCH TO OFF POSITION ON THE P.S.U AND DEPRESS THE POWER BUTTON ON THE FRONT OF THE COMPUTER FOR AT LEAST 2 MINUTE'S [ THIS DRAIN'S THE COMPASITORS ON THE MOTHERBOARD]
NOW WAIT AN ADDITIONAL 2 MINUTE'S AFTER YOU HAVE DRAINED THE COMPASITORS!!!!
NOW OPEN UP  THE P.C AND CLEAR YOURE CMOS  FOR A COUPLE OF MINUTES!!!!!!              [YOU MUST DO THIS STEP]
#11 PLUG ALL OF YOURE CONNECTIONS BACK IN [ DONT FORGET TO FLIP THE SWITCH ON P.S.U TO ON POSITION ]
NOW... FIRE THAT MOTHER @!?#ER UP!!!!!!!
ENTER..... BIOS SETUP .....LOAD OPMIZED DEFAULTS   SAVE AND EXIT
REBOOT....  ENTER SETUP... CONFIGURE YOURE BIOS SETTINGS AND YOURE DONE!!!!!!   [ DONT FORGET ENABLE BIOS BOOT SECTOR PROTECTION]   SAVE & EXIT!!!!!
CONGRADULATIONS.... YOUVE JUST SUCCESSFULY FLASHED YOURE BIOS!!!!!!
P.S Special thank's to  SYER 2003 for all of his assistance.

  • Best Bios in your opinion for Neo2 Plat

Trying all these bios's myself but just curious as to what you ppl have found to be the best bios for your setup with overclocking in mind.
The best I can do so far with my crappy samsung TCCC chips is 265X9.5 or 250X10.5
Also any Ideas why system won't boot overclocked and setting CPU multi to an even number meaning 8,9,10,11,12  the only stable boots I can get are with a half number 9.5, 10.5, 11.5 or 12
Thanks for your thoughts and comments.

Quote from: JasonKruys on 21-February-05, 05:44:57
Well at 245x10.5 your RAM is running at 233......(245x10.5)/11...
As stated before when half multipliers are used, the RAM is divided by the next whole multiplier.
Also, at 3 and 4 multi, your RAM is not running at the speed you think it is either, but slower.
A full multiplier table can be seen here, posted by Oskar Wu, a DFI mobo tech http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=41595&highlight=multiplier+table
Thank you thank you.  Now it totally all makes sence.  I know I have a really chitty ram but now it makes sence that it won't go that high in ram frequency.
But my question still stands what bios to you all like to use on this mobo.

  • Best BIOS settings for Kt3 Ultra2 and Geforce4?

    Hi,
Can someone tell me what the best BIOS settings would be for my KT3 Ultra2 running a Geforce4 ti4200?
I get crappy scores in 3dMark2001 SE and I have the infamous stuttering/crashing problems in 3D games.  I've tried pretty much every configuration of settings and drivers I can think of.
I saw on these forums that the Kt3 Ultra2 can be a bit fussy with GF4 cards.  If someone could post the best BIOS settings for performance and stability I'd be eternally grateful.
Alternatively, email me at [email protected] with them.

  • K8n neo nf3 250: best bios for OC.

    Hi.
What is the best bios for overclocking on msi k8n neo fsr/platinum. I use bios 1,47 now, but i think it is playing games with me.
I have no problem running my cpu at 10/255/2550, but my Ocz 3500 EB wont follow that long on 1:1. So i tried running this at 9/280/2520 and my memory running at 5/6. But my cpu wont get totally stabil here...
My temperatures here is 32c idle and 48c load.
Is there a better bios for OC?

    Try 1.42
Find it here K8N Neo Bios Collection.

  • K8N Neo2 Best bios for Opteron 146?

    Hi guys,
Forgive the rather basic question, but I haven't been around for a long time and things have moved on a piece.
I am running an old Athlon 64 3200+ in my Neo2, with a very old bios.  (See my sig below for current specs.)  Heck, if it works, don't mess with it!  But tomorrow a new Opteron 146 arrives, so I guess I will need to update the bios.
So what's the recommendation for the best bios to go for?
Will I be OK in "jumping" so many bios versions, or would it be best to do it incrementally?
And finally, I remember some issues about Windows not booting after upgrading the bios.  Has this been resolved, or will I need to do a clean Windows install as well?  I really *do not* want to have to do a clean install.  That would be horrendous.
    Thanks for any advice.
    Cheers
    Chippy

9x290 (2,6Ghz) is a very good OC, passing prime95 with both core´s tested.
    I can't complain about a 45% OC... Started with 1.8Ghz.
    Quote from: bejon2000 on 02-February-06, 15:13:05
I "only" manage 10x270 ( 2,7Ghz) primestable so far with my DFI and X2 3800+, since one core gets unstable at 2.8Ghz and beyond.
( But I´m still happy, running Pi at 33sec with 3-3-3-7 RAM / Sandra cpu benchmark gives 24.067mips and Sandra mem.benchmark 6.733mbs )
What kind of voltages are you running to get your OC?
I think that I'm starting to reach the limit of what my Neo2 Plat can supply to the Opty - In BIOS, I specified 1.5v+5% and it gives me only 1.45v or so....

  • 865pe neo 2 LS, Whats is the best bios rev for oc?

This is my second board. I got an rma on the first for sound issues (i still have sound issues but its different from before). The first board I had, I was able to run fsb at 266 with my ram frequency set at 400, giving me 3.2ghz. It ran pretty stable, but the idiot in me decided to flash the bios from 1.3 to 1.5 without doing any checking. I lost all stability, and had to redo my os. As luck would have it, 1.7 came out pretty soon after this disaster, and things got stable again, but I couldnt reach the same clock speeds i had with 1.3 bios rev.  Because of this and the sound issue i decided to not even bother with it and just send it back for a replacement. When i got the replacement it came with 1.41a bios rev. My posted settings are running on this current bios. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to jump back to 1.3 or should I go for some othe bios rev?

YOur PC specs are similar to mine I have been trying to get the same settings
there a few threads on this subject if you want to spend hours looking and get confused

DOT : Like They said some Neo2, aside from the FIS2R, has and doesnt have DOT. I built two friends similar comps using the 865PE Neo2-LS board. One I built a week ago and it had DOT when it came with BIOS 1.6. The other one didn't have it and it came with BIOS 1.4 which I quickly flashed to 1.5 and still no DOT. He just recently flashed it to 1.8 and still has no DOT so he wants a new mobo. I read in some forum that USA's Neo2 series will all soon carry DOT, but not sure when. One thing I did notice, kept the boxes, the one month old Neo2-LS didn't have a DOT marking on the box that the 1-week old Neo2-LS box did. I mean it was a huge DOT marking. If you need to see a picture I'll take it when I get home.
Performance Mode: This is found in the Frequency/Voltage Sub-menu (I think that is the name, anyways it is the first setting in the second column). I believe it is the third option in that menu. It allows you to set your memory clocking (from what I read you need SPD...but mine works without SPD) set to enable. Depending on your memory and its compatibility you can go from SLOW, FAST, TURBO, to ULTRA TURBO.
CPU Ratio Selection: Locked why is this locked can it be unlocked ? Well thank Intel for that. They locked their multipliers so you can't change. I have no idea why they would even put that option in a P4 board...but somewhere I read there was a way around it. On older P4s. Anyways ignore it. If you want to overclocker use the FSB.
DRAM Frequency: ? This is basically a setting, I just learned, to set the RATIO of Processor to memory. Setting it to auto will set your memory clock to its standard rating. I believe you had PC3200 (400mhz) RAM so I assume thats what you should use.
Spread Spectrum: This I just learned so it may not be 100% accurate. Basically when you overclock the FSB it affects all your other hardware. By disabling this the overclocking of the FSB will remain only to the FSB. It won't affect the PCI/AGP slots or the hard drives. Not sure if it affects the memory. If you put it enabled and overclock the FSB your slots and other hardware will be affected too. This leads to a lot of unstability unless you overclock everything correctly.
Adjust CPU Bus Clock (Mhz): ? This is the FSB overclocker. If you are using an 800mhz CPU you have this at 200MHz (200x4=800). This is also in correlation to your RAM. If you have PC3200(400mhz) RAM that is (200mhzx2). Overclocking this board is best done through here.
DDR Clock (Mhz): ? Basically your Memory speed. 400Mhz, etc etc. It also reflects and FSB overclocking. (look above), If you set your CPU Bus Clock to 201, you get the following (201mhzx4=804mhz FSB) and RAM (201mhzx2=402Mhz RAM).
Adjust AGP/PCI Clock (Mhz): ? Basically like the CPU Bus Clock and DDR Clock. It is for overclocking. If you have Spread spectrum on it will reflect the overclocking of the FSB.
CPU Vcore Adjust: No This is a safety mechanism. So you don't go frying or damaging your CPU. Think of it as a "Agree" button from the net or contracts. Disabling, default, makes it so you can't change your CPU voltage. So that it runs at the default, Intel rated, setting. Enabling this lets you change that voltage for overclocking neccesities.
CPU VCore: ? Read the above.
DDR Power Voltage: ? Same as the CPU VCore. It is a voltage raising feature to let you overclock more. Most people on these forums, from what I read, use 2.7 and higher for their RAM. I do also.
AGP Power Voltage:? Same as CPU and DDR voltage. It is for overclocking neccessities. Changing this can affect games and other stuff so do it only if you know how to do it.
Eh I got a STAT draw...back to work, hope that was helpful.

  • Best Bios Settings for stability/performance on Neo2 Platinum?

My sys has been running for several days and has cut off twice.  Wondered if any of my settings in Bios could be responsible.  Before getting to the general questions about the Bios, wanted to ask for answers to questions generated after running Sis Sandra Lite.
    1.  SMBios/DMI info may be inaccurate
    2.  Check vCore settings.  vCore less than rated minimum
    3.  Check to see if Bios is being shadowed
    My responses to the above:
    1.  Don't know what to do
    2.  Cool 'N Quiet says my vCore is 1.06, but the BIOS says 1.45.  What's up?
    3.  In Bios I have "system bios cacheable" enabled, so doesn't that take care of shadowing?
I've been spending a lot of time in the Bios and realize there are several things that I have left at default because I don't know what the #@!* they are.  Can anyone give suggestions on best choices for these settings:
    1.  Advanced Bios Features:
         Gate A20=Fast (Other Options=Normal)
         APIC Function=Enabled (Disabled)
         MPS Table Version=1.4 (1.1)
    2.  Advanced Chipset Features
         AGP Aperture Size=128 (32,64,256,512)
         AGP Fastwrite=Enabled (Disabled)
    3.  Onboard I/O Chip Setup
         EPP Mode Select= EPP1.7 (EPP1.9)
         ECP Mode USE DMA=3 (1)
    4.  Power Management
         Sleep State=S1(POS)  (S3(STR))
Video Off Method=DPMS Support (Blank Screen, V/H Sync+Blank)
    5.  Cell Menu
         High Performance Mode= Manual (Optimized)
         Spread Spectrum=Enabled (Disabled)
         Adjust AGP Frequency=66 (67, 68, ...73)
         Adjust CPU VID=startup (1.4,1.425,1.450 ...1.550)
         Adjust CPU Ratio=startup (4, 4.5, 5, ...7)
    In general:
Voltages stable in CNQ & Bios
    CPU Temps=low 40's
Sis Sandra and Performance Test, based on Prime95, didn't ring any bells about my memory.  I downloaded mem86, but don't know how to use it.  Any advice, does it run under Windows?
I'm throwing a lot of stuff at you, but i would appreciate any and all advice.

    1.  Parallel Port=SPP.  Do you recommend this instead of EPP/ECP?
Sorry don't use it so can't help Leave on default i would guess

    2.  Spread Spectrum=Disabled  What does it do and why is it better disabled?
see [ur=https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=54798.0l]The Complete Guide to Spread Spectrum  [/url] If you go into the cell menu & watch the spread spectrum whilst you increase saty the FSB from 200 you will see spread spectrum turn itself off. So to some extent you can leave it to look after itself. But there have been occasions when disabling it has helped stability.

    3.  Why does Cool 'N Quiet report such a different vCore (1.06) from the Bios (1.45)? It also reports 201 Mhz X 5 = 1004Mhz.  In the Bios the Front Side Bus is 200
Do you mean CoreCentre with Cool'n'Quiet enabled ?? Another Good Read  Cool 'n' Quiet FAQ The 201 instead of 200 is normal

3dMark03 is very GPU-demanding, and your mate's 9700pro is a faster card then your 9600XT.
Try runing 3dMark01 and it whill test the hole system more or less.
