Best quality for output Shooting HDV and DV What is better

I am shooting commercials for local cable. I have a sony fx1 HDV. it shoots 16x9.
The cable Co only accepts dvc pro tapes or mini DV tapes.
I have been shooting in DV mode and importing as firewire basic. (is that correct?)
when I output to tape it plays on any 4x3 tv like everyone is tall.... If I go in and adjust distortion to -33.3 it looks fine. Looks widescreen on 4x3 and widescreen on a widescreen flat panel.
Isn't there a preset so I do not have to adjust all of this?
Also would I have better quality if I shot in HDV and imported that way then just drug the edited product to a firewire basic dv sequence for output?
any input appreciated

If you have the option to shoot in HDV, do it every time unless there is an overriding need.
Firewire Basic is wrong for 16:9 stuff. Use a DV Anamorphic Easy Setup. Which one depends on the video standard or the camera and the cameras audio setting.
Can you provide these?

  • Best quality for export?

What settings for best quality when exporting an HDV video to disk?
Using QT w/H264 but the quality is not acceptable. Can I tweak the settings?
FWIW, I get better quality using Sony Click to Disc at its default settings. Just trying to match that at this point.
    Thanks.

Which "disc" are you exporting to? Hard drive, CDR, DVD-R, etc. And is the point to get as file a file size as possible or are you just trying to archive video but don't care about file size?
And to answer your question, yes you can tweak output settings for H264. When you go to Share -> "Export using QT..." on the export pull down you pick MPEG-4 then directly to the right is a button for "Options". Pick that. Also in there is a button for "Video Options" to refine it even further.

  • The best format for output

    Hi All,
working in animation project to be broadcasted on a TV channel as HD1080 50i,
1- all the animation layers was rendered from TOONBOOM as .SWF to keep it in vector for compositing issue.
Dose SWF lose any quality? we always use TGA sequence with alpha in our past SD projects but now we found SWF is a smaller file size and allows zooming Because it keeps all vector lines.
2- compositing each scene in after effects cs6 and then render them.
What is the best format for output to deal with premiere cs6 as a real time playback ( my editing pc includes gtx680 4gb., many HGST 3tb with raid controller,64g ram, aja kona 3g) so do I go with TGA sequence (I think it will destroy the raid Because of the large number of small-sized files in read and write ) or MOV uncompressed (I'm afraid of the space size and don’t know it will play in real time ) or what is the best compressed format Maintaining video image quality as its now will be my only master source?
    Many thanks,
    sherif

    Thanks Rick for your reply,
Regarding the SWF i moved to flash pro forums and they are supporting me now,
My system is a pc, win.64, I7-3930K, 64G RAM, EVGA GTX680 4G, Many HGST 3TB with raid controler,
Some advised me to go with Quicktime Prores HQ or DNXHD or DPX ,
In this year project my client's requirement for delivery is :
DNxHD 120 Codec, wrapped with QuickTime rapper, which means a file with MOV extension and the codec used is DNxHD 120 ( 1080@50i HD)
So do i work with dnxhd 120 from the beginning to the delivery? (and it will be my only master source) or another format encode it at the end to dnxhd 120? ( i will distribut this project to many channels after the first run exclusivity period end with different requirements).
    Thanks,

  • Best quality for youtube

I made a video and its 2.01 GB in iMovie. i want to put it on youtube but I want the best possible quality. The limit for youtube is 100MB whats the best way to compress my movie?

    Hi F,
I followed your link and found your instructions about exporting from iMovie with best quality for YouTube.
The instructions were pretty clear, although my options didn't line up with them exactly (I'll tell you my explicit settings below). Still, I exported it successfully.
Then I uploaded the resultant .mov file to YouTube. When it was all finished processing, I viewed it. After the first fraction of a second all I saw was garbage -- just junk patterns filling the screen. The sound was excellent. (by the way, I had lots of very short clips in there -- 00:00:03 in length (not sure what the units are).
So I went back to iMovie, opened up my movie project. Played the video. Now it is intermittent garbage, too. Looks just like the uploaded file, but only intermittently.
Here are the exact options and settings I used for export:
File->Share, chose quicktime and expert settings, pressed the "share" button.
in the Export dialog, I selected "movie to quicktime movie" and clicked on the "options" button.
    Options:
    Video:
    Settings...
    Set compression to mpeg-4
    Set quality to medium
    Set frame rate to 30
Let Key frame and Data rate defaulted (unchecked)
    Filter...
didn't look at this. Now that I do, it's set to "none"
    Size...
Selected the "custom size" radio button and set it to 320 x 240
    Sound:
    Settings...
    format: uncompressed
    sample rate: 44.1khz
    sample size: 16
    channels: 1 (mono)
There was also a check box for "Prepare for internet Streaming"
It was already checked and set to "fast start"
    I didn't change it.
If you could give me any further help, I'd really appreciate it. This was my first attempt to put anything on YouTube.
    Thanks a lot,

  • Shoot HDV and Capture as DV ?

I have been looking at the Canon HV20 which is able to shoot both HDV and DV.
I assume that one could shoot HDV and capture it as DV in FCE and FCP. If this is the case, what Easy Setup would be used in both apps ?
Also, as HDV deals with frames differently, resulting in poorer movement rendition than DV, would this mean that the captured DV's motion would not look as good as usual ?
If that was true, it might be better shooting in DV initially ?
Any comments or thoughts would be welcome.

I have just remembered that 4 members of my video club recently shot a theatrical production.
They used 4 "manned" cameras shooting SD and had a "locked" unmanned HDV camera shooting the whole of the stage.
The theory behind it was that the locked camera footage could be used on occasions when the manned cameras did not capture ideal shots of the actors etc.
The fact that it was HD meant that they could zoom into the appropriate section of the stage, during editing, and still end up with quality roughly equal to SD.
Trying that with an SD camera would have resulted in a noticeable degradation of the image.
From what I could tell from the DVD they projected, it seemed to work OK.

  • What is the best subscription for use in US and Au...

I regularly travel between US and Australia.  I have postal addresses in both locations and credit cards from both countries.  So I can purchase from either location.
I want to be able to make calls to US land lines and Mobiles whilst in either countries.  What is the best subscription for me to buy and in which country should I purchase it?
NOTE: I am not really concerned about calls to Australia.  I don't make that many and so am happy to pay as I go for the Australian calls.

Probably best option would be Unlimited US&Canada subscription, which you can get if you are located in US.
It will be displayed here: http://www.skype.com/go/subscriptions
If you are outside of US or Canada then this subscription is not offered.
It doesn't matter where you are located when placing calls, but with subscriptions it does matter where you are when purchasing.

If the iPad is unopened, and in the original box, then it comes with the full warranty. However, if it is used, and comes with an original box, it may or may not have the original warranty; if there's still some warranty left, the original seller should have transferred the warranty to you.

  • I want to accumulate rain for the day, month and year; What formula can I use?

I want to accumulate rain for the day, month and year; What formula or expression can I use.
I am using a Rain Wise product that converts pulses to an analog value.  The Rain Wise device can be
set to measure up to 1", 5", or 10".  I will be setting the unit to 10 inches in increments of 0.01 inches.
What I would like to do is everytime the signal increments I would like to count it as 0.01 then after reaching
a period of time whether it be a day or a month reset back to zero.
Need some advise on this problem.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello Ryan,
Lookout gets a Modbus over Ethernet signal which originates as a 4-20mA input to a Moxa Ethernet I/O Module (E1240) in the field.  In Lookout I created a ModbusEthernet Driver and a tag which scales 0 - 65534 RAW to 0-10 Eng.  [0 - 10 is inches of rain]  Also, another piece of information is that after the rain gauge maxes out at 10 inches it will zero out and start over.
I though the accumulator was time based and took a sample over a specific time period, for instance, one sample every 30 seconds then accumulate.  If this is so then if I have 5 inches of rain and then it stopped raining, then 30 seconds latter it would sample, it would see 5 inches and add that to be 10 inches when actually it had only rained 5 inches.
I really need some help with this process,

  • Best quality for editing fcp with p2 standard definition and canon elura 100 widescreen

I am editing on FCP 7. Three cameras were used. Panasonic HPX 500 set in standard def 4x3, another small panasonic that shoots standard def was used only it was set a 16x9 and an even smaller Canon  NTSC Elura 100 was set on widescreen (16x9). My mistake is I want them look the best they can (at 16x9 or 4x3) when burned to DVD. I would prefer to go with 4x3 and crop the 16x9s. I have a Mac Pro 1,1 ; 2 Dual Core Intel Xeon 2.66 gHx and AJA Kona card. The question is: What is the BEST setting for log & capture of each device and what is the BEST sequence setting to build my project on. Right now everything looks like it has a soft shadowy image (basically low quality image - probably because it is mostly low quality... even the HPX 500 looks bad because I expanded it to fit the 16x9 screen of my sequence. And here's a strange event, even though my sequence setting is 720x480 the screen aspect ratio comes out 16x9... go figure. I seem to know less and less about this business every day. If anybody is willing to offer some advice on how I can make Chicken Salad out of this Chicken Shi_, I'd love to hear it. I hope it's just a settings problem on the ingest or sequence side.
    Thanks,

  • Exporting best quality for HDV

Hi - I've been editing for the first time on HDV 1080i50 in FCP - I want to export as a Quicktime in the best setting possible but not sure what it is. When I go export quicktime hdv1080i it only lets me do medium quality - in the past when I've exported in dv-pal I can change the setting to best quality...can anyone suggest what I should do.
    thanks

thanks - what about the settings on that please as I think it just does the last export setting (which would be dv-pal)
    cheers

  • Best workflow for footage in 1440x1080 and vid rate 23.98fps going to a PAL DVD player in europe

I am new at this and still getting a grasp of the technical details.  I've made several trips to Germany over the last three years and each time have shot using different settings.  Right now I am editing the footage from the first year where I shot 1080i and 24p (Canon XHA1).  I've already sent some DVDs with films I edited from this trip, but not sure I've achieved the best result that I can in terms of image quality.  What i think i've been doing so far is to edit in the original NTSC, and then when i get ready to burn the DVD to send to my relatives in Germany, I have set the Project Info settings in iDVD to PAL.  But from reading the boards I am getting the sense that there are multiple ways to do this, each with varying results.  Obviously, I'd like to have my German viewers view a DVD with the best quality picture, and am wondering what is the best way to go about this.  I've also read on the boards that most PAL dvd players will play NTSC, which makes me wonder if burning the DVD with iDVD set to PAL is necessary.  I've already been told by one of my relatives who has viewed the same film here in america (burned as NTSC) and in Germany (one I sent burned as PAL), that the PAL versions did not have as good a picture quality.  Any suggestions?
Also, if you knew that your primary audience was going to be PAL viewers, and you are shooting with an NTSC camera, what would the ideal settings be?  On my canon xha1, my frame rate options are 60i, 30f, and 24f.  My 'comp out' options are 480i and 080i/480i.  My understanding is 1080i50 would be better for PAL, but 25fps is not an option on my camera.
    Thanks,
    Paul

Well it must be 24 over 29.97 then because it is working with it.  I have been able to create timelines and export quicktime movies, etc.  The item properties (in FCE Browser) of the clips definitely say 23.98fps-- as I would expect because I know I had the camera set to 24p.  However, the frame rate of the sequences i've been editing on say 29.97.  This is without me having made any conscious effort to manipulate any settings for the sequences at the outset-- I didn't even know the sequences had settings for this when i started.  I just began dragging and dropping footage out of the browser and it must have automatically set the sequence to 29.97.  Who knows what I had the Easy Set up set to when i brought the footage over from my camera two years ago.  I knew even less then.  Are the settings on Easy Set up critical when bringing the footage onto your computer from your camera?  What processes are the Easy set up settings governing?
Even with all of that said, you would recommend burning the DVD as an NTSC?  An NTSC in a new PAL DVD player will look better than an NTSC burned as a PAL?  I suppose I could send them both versions and see which one looks better.
    Thanks for you help Tom.
    P.S.
On the true 24p issue, I did find this:
There are many posts out there about the Canon XH A1 not having "true 24p".
I think much of that misinformation out there maybe stemmed from (correct me if I'm wrong):
Canon Frame Mode on the standard DV cams was a "simulation: of the 24 frame look.
The Canon HDV 24p actually records each single frame progressively, but using an interlaced method.

  • Import/Export to retain best quality for a Beginner

    Hi,
I'm hoping someone could help me retain the best quality possible for my video while working on projects because whatever I'm doing now is not working.
I shoot with a Sony HDR-FX1000 in HDV 1080i/24p and the picture and quality is amazing when plugged into a TV or played back on the camera LCD screen.  I use a new iMac 2.7GHz Intel Core i5, Mac OS X 10.7.4 to edit.  However, when I import into my new FCP X it is not as crisp and quality, and then when I export, it is definitely not the quality I imagined.  The video loses it's sharpness and it gets very noisy plus fuzzy lines appear in some areas of shots.  These lines don't show up when I view my edited footage in the timeline, only after exporting.  I'm fairly new to this all and know I'm not using the best settings to retain the most quality because the beginning and end quality look very different.
I don't do heavy duty editing or effects at the moment.  Basic color correction, slow-motion, preset effects, transitions, music and titles.
ANY help relating to what my settings should be across the board to retain the best image possible is greatly appreciated.  I can't seem to figure it out with trial and error anymore and thought I'd turn to the experts for help.
    Thanks!
    Smalls

I've set the viewer to both fields.  I guess I don't know why I was transcoding.  I thought it somehow optimized the video.  Could part of the reason the quality drops be because I transcoded the video when I didn't need to?
When I export, these are the settings I use and then export to QuickTime.
Here is an example of the noise and lines that show up after exporting the video.
It's not like this in the viewer while editing EXCEPT when I change playback quality to High Quality.  Any idea why?
Also, these are my settings when importing the video.  What should be changed other than deselected the Transcoding options?
I really appreciate the input.  Thanks!

  • Best option for Backup of HDV Files

I'm just finishing a project and will be needing my harddrive space for the next one, and I'm wondering how best to store HDV footage NOT ON MY HARDDRIVE? (Not that I don't trust them, just don't like having all my eggs in one basket).
There's not a good intuitive answer that I've found but I'm leaning on taking my 720p24p footage and going MPEG-2... and burning to Data DVD's and storing them away. However I am concerned if there is a significant loss of quality between it's current format (DVCPro 100) and the MPEG-2.
If I need to retrieve the footage for later edits am I going to have issues?
Any help or ideas would be appreciated. I have a combination of P2 and Onlocation captured files, and I'd like to cut out all the "Crap" and save just the takes needed...and have a back-up OFF of the hardddrive just in case.
    Thanks in advance.
    H.R. Crystal

We were on a really tight time schedule, and so the P2- workflow got in our way. about 18% of our film landed on P-2, (Just exteriors where we didn't have power) Everything else was done via on-location.
We didn't run TAPE -- Format is onlocation's version of .avi which as best I can figure is DVCPro 100. I don't have access to the camera it was recorded on...and even I did, would this be the best option? (Tape export?)
    Thanks.
