Best settings for DVD project

I have done all of my work so far for online projects so I didn't realise that dvd always has dimensions of 720x576, and that it is only blueray which plays in full HD, until I started building a DVD project in Encore.
I would like some advice to produce the best possible results on a dvd format;
I presume that this means I must build all my menus in photoshop to 720x576 dimensions?
But what about the video itself? It was filmed in 1920x1080, and was created on a 1920x1080 timeline in Premiere Pro, can I simply export it at as an SD file?
What I'm asking really is how should I export my project from Premiere, and build it in Encore for best possible results for DVD format?

I'm sure there are topics about this in this forum but I couldn't search and find them.
If your HD material has a lot of fine detail that might strobe try adding a Gaussian blur to your HD export, I find a setting of 3 to 4 vertical helps.

    Ok so this is my first major dilemma!
    I have to do a bunch of Cinema ads, compiled from psd, bmp, jpg files, that need to be for a Cinema screen (PAL). The ads will be screened off a DVD/Projector and compiled with a bunch of Movie trailers.
    I am not sure what sequence settings in motion are going to give me the best quality, and I can't test the quality until the opening night of the festival!

    well a lot depends on the footage you might be using. Use the setting that matches that. Or if its graphics based use the biggest baddest HD setting you can. Of course if the finished thing is getting burnt to a DVD to be shown its all going to be compressed then and lose quality at that stage.

  • Best Settings for DVD conversion to Quicktime

    I am using a DVD source material for the first time in an edit job. I am using MPEG Streamclip to upload the DVD disk (private material not copywrited) for conversion to Quicktime (.mov) for further transfer to Final Cut Pro 6 for editing, and final output back to DVD (using my FCP Suite programs.) I need the absolute best quality transfer regardless of file size to preserve the original video.
    I am using the following settings in Streamclip and I would greatly appreciate opinions if these are the best recommended settings to use for my needs. Thank you very much for all input.
    Compression: Apple FCP Uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2
    Quality: 100%
    Sound: Uncompressed
    Frame Size: 640 x 480 (4:3)
    Interlaced Scaling and Reinterlace Chroma "checked"

    I don't have FCP so I have converted to .dv for iMovie.
    But if you want to preserve the original quality you should edit the DVD's MPEG with MPEG Streamclip and re-author that as a video-DVD. Yes, you can then do only straight cuts to the GOP (i.e. max 0.6 second precision):

    Hi, I have hd footage that looks great and is 1920x1080. I want to burn this to disk in this same resolution, however I don't want to burn blueray I want everybody to be able to play this. I have some 8.5gb disks and my project is 7.4gbs. It currently looks great on my 30 inch screen and looks like a dvd that id bought. Is it possible to burn this to this disk. Also will sd tvs crop the film when it plays?

    If it's HDV source, use compressor to create a 16:9 MPEG files... then burn that to a DVD with DVD SP. It will letterbox it to SD, but "everyone" can play it that way. Will look great. could also fill a 16:9 set too.
    Best workflow would be right click sequence setting and send to Compressor... then choose 16:9 and go..
    You can make HD DVD's too using the presets in compressor and burning them in DVD SP as well, but the viewer would have to have a HD DVD player.

    I am shooting AVCHD 1080p 60fps with a JVC GC-PX100, using a Windows 7, i7-2600 3.40Ghz., 8Gb.RAM, 1 TB HDD with PE11 and a Pioneer Blu-Ray writer drive.
    I'm looking to find the best settings for replay on a 55" HDTV.  I have tested both BD and DVD without seeing very much difference between the two as far as video quality is concerned,
    but I want to make sure I'm using the right settings for the best quality on both drives. Can someone please offer a step by step settings procedure for both BD and DVD, also which do you
    think is the better route to take between the two?
    Also, I have noticed there is a ghosting image after letters/numbers on faster moving content (like railroad cars) on my video even before transferring it, can anyone give some insight to what that might be and if there may be a solution ??

    Referring back to your post 4.
    Additional info:  When I published my test video for DVD I chose “Computer” on the Publish+Share drop-down list, then chose MPEG, Presets: HDTV 1080p 29.97 High Quality.
    Saved and burned to DVD.  I also did the same choosing AVCHD Presets: MP4 – H264 1920x1080p 30. Saved and burned to DVD
    Let us clarify. When the end result is "...burned to DVD" in either case, are saying that you take your saved file to DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc or AVCHD on DVD disc, using another Premiere Elements 11 project on Windows 7 64 bit.
    My post numbered 1, contained the step by step for taking your 1080p60 Timeline directly to DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc or Blu-ray disc format on Blu-ray disc.
    If you are going to introduce intermediates in your workflow (Timeline content saved to file and then burn to disc), then I would offer the following scheme
    a. 1080p60 project preset (project 1)
    b. 1080p60 Timeline saved to file via
    Publish+Share
    Computer
    AVCHD
    with presets = MP4 - H.264 1920 x 1080p30 (and then under the Advanced Button/Video Tab, customize the export settings for 1080p60 instead of 1080p30)
    c. Import that back into Premiere Elements 1080p60 project (project 2) and burn to disc DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc, AVCHD on DVD disc, or Blu-ray disc format on Blu-ray disc..
    This is another alternative interpretation to your saved and burned to DVD.....in one project, you are doing two different exports...one to a file saved to the hard drive and after than the burn to disc (be it DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc, AVCHD format on DVD disc, or Blu-ray disc format on Blu-ray disc). If this is the case, there is no "intermediate".
    There used to be the discussion about HDV to DVD-VIDEO format on DVD disc - whether HDV file should be imported into the project as source or whether the user should downsize the HDV to DV widescreen in the camera before import into a DV Widescreen Premiere Elements project. As we getting into this type of question with your 1080p60 to DV widescreen?
    Please review and consider. And, then please let me know if any of the above addresses your considerations.

  • Best Settings for Exporting DVD Footage in a Movie File

    Hello,
    I've been trying to find the best settings for exporting DVD footage into a movie file from Adobe Premiere CS6.
    I recently have been using my Magnavox DVD recorder for recording VHS tapes that I made long ago for shows and various other things, and no matter what, my footage doesn't come out as it needs to be.

    I'm not expecting HD footage, I know these are tapes, but I'm playing the raw footage on my Xbox 360, and it looks better than this. I had to directly use the VOB files on the DVD for this, as trying to rip the files into an AVI or any other format with a DVD ripper didn't do anything, in fact it degraded the quality and made the audio not play in Premiere.
    So what would be some good settings for exporting a sequence with DVD footage that is from a VHS into a movie file, preferably one that wouldn't degrade the quality?

    First, read Why not edit mpeg http://tangentsoft.net/video/mpeg/edit.html to get a general idea of why a VOB makes a very poor source file (which is a renamed MPG, with some other stuff like menu screens)

    Once you have a DVD compliant VOB on your timeline, and understanding that a standalone DVD recorder sometimes plays fast-n-loose with "compliance" per the DVD specification, about all you can do is export to standard or widescreen DV AVI and accept the fact that re-encoding an already compressed file is just not going to give great results

    I?m recording some very machine intensi've video & sound to outboard devices. I'm using these outboard devices so that the recording process itself does not impact the demonstration performance.
    Concerning the sound out, I?m using the line & 2 out of the card, and running it through a pro level audio board (Mackie) for any adjustments & monitoring before taking the line out of the board into the recording device. When returning the sound for monitoring, I?m also running from the external device directly to the board and directly from there to either headphones or control room monitors. Thus, I?m using the Audigy for initial sound generation. So far, I've not really made any ajustments at the board other than level or balance. I like to keep things pretty flat in recording.
    I?ve looked around for recommendations as to the best settings for the Audigy card from its internal software for this situation, but find no ready reference. My concern is that I have the ?hottest? signal from this device, while being very concerned with audio quality. I?m looking for both ?punch? and ?clarity? of signal.
    Is there a document or source that would give me this direction? While I can move from this SB card to other more studio based cards, I?d like to keep the demo product in line with what the actual target audience would have in their machines, and be able to replicate at their workstation.
    For example, does the card function best at 00% (0db) output, or 50% (-5db) output?
    Or some setting in between...most likely...
    Or, is there some other setting I?m not aware of?

  • Best settings for mixed codec doco project

    Please forgive me for asking what I am sure has been asked before, but having done a few searches I was still unsure as to what is the best approach for this project.
    I have just come over to FCP from Avid (hence knowing very little about FCP), and have a documentary project that I want to cut in FCP.
    It was mostly shot on XDcam EX 1080/25p 35mbps, but there is a fair amount of B camera footage that is DVCProHD 1080/25p 100mbps
    The general concensus seems to be to open a project in the format that is most prevalent i.e XDcam EX.
    As this project is only going to be offlined in this system, and then conformed elsewhere, and as I would like to be able to have all the media on one drive so I can cut on the workstation and on my laptop where necessary, it seems sensible to use a more compressed offline res as there is well over 100 hours of footage.
    Any guidance would be greatly appreciated as I don't want to cut in a codec/format that is just going to give me headaches when it comes to doing the conform, or during the edit got that matter.

    Workstation - 2 x 2.4GHZ quad core Xeon, 16GB ram, 1TB system, 2TB primary scratch, 4TB external media drive (shared with laptop)
    Laptop - 2.8ghz core i7, 8GB ram, 500GB internal drive, 4TB external media drive (shared with workstation)
    FCP 7.0.3 running on systems

    Sorry Avid-man...going to have to let go of your "offline/online" workflow ideals.  There is no offline in FCP. Well, it is best if there isn't.  You will...SHOULD...be working with XDCAM and DVCPRO HD at full resolution.  So your cut will then just be color corrected.  100 hours of XDCAM is 1.7TB.  100 hours of DVCPRO HD is well...5.4T TB...but you will have a mixture of the two.  I had 80 hours of DVCPRO HD and all that fit on 2TB...but then again, that was at 720p.  Still...unless you REALLY know what you are doing...unless you have an FCP expert on staff...do not offline/online. 
    ANYWAY...I don't know who this "General Consensus" is, but they are WRONG.  They couldn't be wronger if they wanted to be wrong about being wrong.  Well, they are wrong.  NEVER edit ANYTHING that is not XDCAM in an XDCAM sequence...not unless you like crashing a lot...and then blaming FCP for sucking and not being as good as an Avid....because you will do that if you follow this General person's advice. 
    No...Use a ProRes sequence setting, and edit both on that.  XDCAM is a GOP format...no real frames...just a group of pictures.  So if you throw a real frame format onto that...crash city.  But use ProRes...and you will be fine. 
    So use both formats natively...don't try to go offline/online.  And edit both in a ProRes sequence.

    Shane's Stock Answer #42 - David Roth Weiss' Secret Quick and Dirty Way to Author a DVD:
    The absolute simplest way to make a DVD using FCP and DVDSP is as follows:
    1. Export a QT movie, either a reference file or self contained using current settings.
    2. Open DVDSP, select the "graphical" tab and you will see two little monitors, one blue, one green.
    3. Select the left blue one and hit delete.
    4. Now, select the green one, right click on it and select the top option "first play".
    5. Now drag your QT from the browser and drop it on top of the green monitor.
    6. Now, for a DVD from an HD source, look to the right side and select the "general tab" in the track editor, and see the Display Mode, and select "16:9 pan-scan."
    7. Hit the little black and yellow burn icon at the top of the page and put a a DVD in when prompted. DVDSP will encode and burn your new DVD.
    THATS ALL!!!
    NOW...if you want a GOOD LOOKING DVD, instead of taking your REF movie into DVD SP, instead take it into Compressor and choose the BEST QUALITY ENCODE (2 pass VBR) that matches your show timing.  Then take THAT result into DVD SP and follow the rest of the steps.  Except you can choose "16:9 LETTERBOX" instead of PAN & SCAN if you want to see the entire image.

    I am looking for some advice on the best settings for FCP 7 when I am syncing sound using pluraleyes, exporting into quicktime as one file and then importing that new file into FCP 7 for editing. I have noticed that sometimes my Quicktime files are very large (20 gb) and sometimes they are much smaller (130 MB), but I never changed the settings.
    I am working on FCP 7 and shot using my Panasonic GH3 at 24 fps (which comes to 23.98). My frame size is 1920x1080. Compressor is H.264. Data rate: 8.6 MB/sec. Audio rate: 48.0 KHz.  I have heard that FCP 7 does not properly deal with H.264. So, I am wondering, what should my settings be?  Should I set to "Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) 1920x1080 24p 48 kHz"?  Is there anything I need to know when I export to Quicktime 7 Pro in order to not reduce the quality of the video? Should I be changing my video files first before I even start to work on them?
    I haven't edited in almost ten years so I am desperate need of some guidance!

    Thanks for your help.  So, I already synced all of my interviews in FCP 7 (using pluraleyes) before I changed the video to ProRess 422.  Can I just go into FCP (in the same project) and compress the video footage, import the new video files and throw it into the timeline? Or will this cause issues? I tried this as a test and it seems to be okay but I just want to check that there aren't any issues that I am not considering.
    Also, when I do compress, it seems to take forever (sometimes two hours). Is there any way to make this move along faster?

    What version of Premiere Elements are you using on Mac?
    Export your Timeline content to a .mp4 file, using export settings which have been customized under the Advanced Button/Video Tab of the export's preset.
    See Publish+Share/Computer/AVCHD and .mp4 category. The exported file is then uploaded to YouTube at the YouTube web site.
    If you post the properties of your source video and project settings, I will suggest the settings for the Timeline content export to file saved to the computer
    hard drive for upload to YouTube at the YouTube web site.

    Dr. Pooja Jaisingh offered very valuable tips for good practice in responsive design last week in her webinar. 'Do's and Don'ts of creating Responsive Projects with Captivate 8'. I don't see the recording yet On Demand, but keep an eye on it.
    Did you test a responsive project with F11 (Preview in Browser)? You will be able to change the resolution of the browser window and see that the content, if well designed (you can have absolute positioning, size as well) will move, shrink to adapt. The break points (3 devices) allow you to make more invasive changes at those points: dragging some objects out of the stage in the scratch area because they take up too much space for phones is one example. Or replacing a big screenshot with many details by a zoomed in detail screenshot for the mobile breakpoint. That is my way of explaining, responsive is not just have the three layouts for devices, it is also adapting between those breakpoints.

    I have researched and found out that the AAC format rules over the MP3 format as fas as sound quality goes with lossy formats. Example: AAC at 128 is better than MP3 at 160 as so forth. My questions are: What are the best settings for ripping cd's in the AAC format? Will I be able to burn cd mixes with the tracks I import into itunes after importing using the AAC format?     EAC does a better job of correcting errors in damaged CDs, but for normal CDs iTunes does a fine job of ripping to AAC.

    We are developing a travel tour idea for different locations within the US.  Tour content can include video, audio, images and text, as well as maps and locations.  We want to make our tours "in-depth" so that people can spend good quality time traveling a short distance and exploring "in-depth" rather than travelling long distances and giving only casual interest to what they see.
    I'm new to developing apps for the iPhone and am using Dreamweaver CS5.5 soon to be updated to CS6. 
    I'm wondering if an app for iPhone and other related media like Android is really the way to go because of the limited content and screen size available.  I can envision our tours being utilized in many other formats, including iPad, Interactive PDF, as travel e-books or through an interactive website.  Our goal is to sell our apps, not give our material away for free. PDF would be my preferred format, but I know that PDF is easily transferred for free among users and would probably not give us much profit.
    Any thoughts out there on what the best format for our project might be, or should it include ALL of the above formats? App creation for the iPhone is a rather complicated process, so that's why I'm wondering if after all of the work that you have to put in to create an iPhone app, if that is ultimately my best choice.
    I would appreciate any thoughts or advice, or any questions you might have.  I'm working on a Mac Pro with CS5.5 Master Collection soon to be updated to CS6
