Best way to convert home movie VHS tapes so they can be edited in iMovie HD

Please help! I'm sorry this question is going to be long, but I'm a novice at this.
My goal is to get my VHS home movies (I have about 30 of them) into iMovie so I can do two things.
First I want to burn DVD's so I'll have a copy of the VHS tapes before they go bad.
Secondly, I want to be able to extract small clips from all of the tapes and combine them in a new iMovie project.
Here's what I've done so far:
I purchased a Canopus ADVC110 and got someof my VHS tapes converted digitally but the file sizes were HUGE and eating up my hard drive space. I was down to 6 GB of space left on my hard drive and almost crashed my Mac.
I deleted all these huge files and got my Mac back up to having 111 gigs of space left. Whew!
This week I purchased a Pinnacle converter and started all over. I took a VHS tape, and it was compressed into a nice small Mpeg-4 file and went to iTunes.
Then I tried to drag and drop it from itunes to imovie. That didn't work. I then dragged the movie to my desktop and then dragged it to imovie..... looks like this was going to take a long time to get into imovie. I'm thinking this is too many steps.
Now I am importing the file into iMovie by importing directly from itunes. The file size is 1.04 GB and it is 1 hour and 54 minutes long. It is taking a loooong time to import this movie....like 100 minutes.
I am afraid I am doing this the hard way.
Plus, after reading all the discussion boards and all the problems people are having... I don't even know if I'll be able to successfully edit this movie once it's imported. Plus, after I've edited it (if I can) will I be able to transfer the clips to another iMovie project?
I'm happy with the file size that the Pinnacle converter is giving me. I'm happy with the way the movie appears in itunes.
Because I have **so many VHS tapes** to convert, I'm asking you all if there is an easier way for me to complete this task!
Thanks in advance for any advise. Keep in mind that I'm not tech-sophisticated..... just a middle aged Grandma trying to preserve memories of my family!

_Share" the highlight as suggested_
Thanks Lennart..... I'm not sure I know what you meant by the above.
Do you mean that I share the little clips I want to use in the 'best of project'?
I read the MacWorld article.... it's great thanks!
I want to keep all these converted movies on my hard drive because down the road I want to extract other clips from them so I can make a 'best of' movie for my other family members. I may want to do that next year.... or whatever..... so I want to have the imovies available for me when that time comes.
In order to do this am I going to have to buy a lot..... and I mean ALOT of extra hard drive space? That darn Canopus was really making files for me that were like 60-80GB's per one half hour movie!!
Hey, I really appreciate all the time you are spending with me on this topic. Making these imovie memories are so very important to me.

  • Copying VHS tapes to Hard Drive for editing in iMovie

    OK, so I have old home videos on VHS tapes; I was going to burn them all to DVD, but found that they cannot be edited and I understand ripping them will degrade the quality (and we're working with VHS -- not the best quality to begin with!) So, I learned there is a way "analog digital capture" where I can transfer the VHS tapes onto a hard drive, then edit in iMovie.
    I know I could pay for a transfer house to do it, but I think it would be wiser financially to invest in the device I need to do it myself.
    I don't entirely understand what I need to buy, or how to do it, does anyone know what I am asking and what to do? Thank you so much!

    I am using a JVC DR MV-150 VHS DVD recorder which dubs directly.
    The results look better than the originals.
    Some problems with "finalizing" the DVDs, but I managed to push a series of buttons and got there. It is not what JVC says in their manual and found something on line which was wrong as well, but a combination got me there.
    It is one touch, load in tape, load in blank DVD and push dubbing. Machine initializes the DVD and then transfers, at the end you go through a process to "finalize" the DVD and done.
    Cost me $200 at Sma's Club.
    You can also take semi full tapes and pause the dubbing and put in a new VHS tape and record a "New" chapter.
    All in all I like it. It has better quality than going from VHS to computer, I assume they have some sort of a chip in the machine to make this better.

  • What is the best way to convert mini dv tapes to digital

    I have a Canon ZR800 that I have created several mini dv tapes with.  What is the best way to convert these tapes I made to a digital format?  I have a Macbook to use for the digital format.

    Hello Jhoslter,
    To transfer footage from the ZR800 to your Mac, you will need a firewire (IEEE-1394) cable and a firewire port on your computer.  If your computer is not equipped with a firewire port, we would suggest contacting your computer manufacturer for information regarding which firewire card will work best on your system.
    As it is only possible to transfer video to a computer via firewire connection with the Canon camcorder, any video capturing program that supports firewire connections should be fine to use to transfer video to your computer.  Canon does not manufacture video capturing programs or support a particular brand.
    Canon does not require firewire drivers for any of our miniDV camcorders.  Our camcorders use the driver for your firewire card to communicate with the computer.
    The appearance of the "DV IN" message in the camcorder's LCD screen indicates that the camcorder has detected your firewire port and is waiting for a signal from the video editing software to begin the transfer of footage.  The remainder of the transfer process is controlled by that software; we would suggest reviewing the instructions for that program for further information.

  • What is the best way to share HD movies?

    I am thinking of moving from digital8 recording to HD (leaning toward HDD or SD instead of miniDV as the later seems to be getting obsolete). Now I can burn a DVD to give to low-tech family members. It does not sound like I will be able to burn HD DVD's, so what will be the best way to share home videos with family members?
    Also for archiving purposes, is it easy to hook up a "backup hard-drive" to store family movies for posterity?

    Personally, I use MobileMe and let my family watch the movies on line. It is easy to share this way. I share the movie in Large (960x540) or Medium to iTunes. Then I share to Mobile Me.
    For personal viewing, I use the Apple TV.
    You can also burn a data DVD of your finished movie, and let them copy the file to iTunes from their data DVD.
    You can upload the movie to other video sharing services such as YouTube or Vimeo.
    You can burn a blu-ray disk if you have Toast and a BluRay burner. You can burn a short movie to regular DVD media using Toast and a regular DVD burner that is playable on most BluRay Players.

  • What is the best way of converting a Top Level VI into a 'sub vi' - or function ( without duplicating programming)

    Hi,
    General question here about design architecture, which i keep running into, but haven't found a really good solution.  If i write a 'Top Level VI' to do something, what is the best way of converting it into a subVI - which is call-able from other VIs, while still allowing the top level VI to have synchronised feedback/indicator updates.
    I guess the point is that when something is a top level VI you write gui logic about what happens when someone clicks buttons or whatever - which you don't want in the 'sub vi' version.
    I did at one point try having a hidden boolean button that was an input to the subVI which would let the VI know if it was supposed to be doing the front panel stuff - or simply running as a subVI.  This isn't really ideal though - since it would be better to be able to hive off the grizzly useful stuff from the fluffy - front panel updating stuff - having them together makes the VIs rather untidy.  More annoyingly though, if you have the front panel version of it running - say waiting for you to hit 'go', it breaks all the other VIs that use it as a sub vi - since they can't compile when a sub vi is already running.
    Another possibility that i tried was to basically duplicate the vi so that there was a backend part, and a front end part - and when i click 'go' the backend part is called as a sub vi.  The problem with this is that it really limits the interface that the user gets - since none of the controls on the front panel update with the results untill the sub vi is over.  I guess again i could solve this by passing references to some of the controls to update them in the subvi - but this doesn't really seem like the ideal situation if the subvi is called by something else without the same types of controls etc.
    One final idea i had was to essentially paste all the controls in the VI into a global variable file, and make the sub vi update them, and the front panel VI read from them.  This seems to 'work' - although clearly it is a work around rather than a proper solution - since i spend loads of time worrying about how i update cluster variables in the global - reading and writing.
    Does anyone have any guidance on what they do to solve this problem?
    JP

    You could run a subvis in a Subpanel on your top level.  Lets you see the current data while the subvi is running.

  • HT1364 I just bought a new PC and now have ample space on my C drive to house my music Library which is currenlty installed on a external drive.  What is the best way to install and move the itunes library to my C Drive?

    I just bought a new PC and now have ample space on my C drive to house my music Library which is currenlty installed on a external drive.  What is the best way to install and move the itunes library to my C Drive?

    If the entire library is on the external drive then simply copy the iTunes folder into <User's Music> on the new computer, then install iTunes. If you've already installed iTunes you will want to remove the empty iTunes folder in <User's Music> first.
    If it turns out you only have the media folder on the external drive then take a look at this post...

  • What is the best way of converting everything in a result set into a string

    hello folks
    What do you think is the best way of converting everything in a resultset into a string???
    At the moment I'm using
    rs.getString(i);
    everywhere (no matter if the underlying datatype is a date or whatever..) it converts automatically evertything expect NULL into a valid string.
    Are there better (simple to use..) ways?

    I don't see a big switch construct. How about trying the following:
    Call this method from your original method by passing the resultset obtained.
    public String[] convert(ResultSet rs) {
         int col = ((ResultSetMetaData) rs.getMetaData()).getColumnCount();
         String[] record = new String[col];
         int i=0;
         while(rs.next()) {
              if(rs.wasNull()) record[i] = new String();
              else record[i] = rs.getString(i);
              i++;
         return record;

    You can share songs, but if there is DRM protection on the song, it will not play on the other device unless you also transfer the rights to the other device. You are getting into the problem of music piracy.

  • Advice on best way to structure flash movie

    Hi,
    I'm a little mixed up on the best way to approach this movie I need to make. Basically it includes a loading screen, some narrative sections, and a few interspersed interactive sections (a couple of quizes and some forms to fill out).
    I'm thinking because of the complexity I should seperate it into "scenes" but my understanding is scenes are bad, so I'm thinking I should be using movie clips for each major section?
    I also want to have a controller for skipping forward and backwards,  so let me see if I have this correct.
    Would I have one master timeline with all my actionscript and what not and my navigation controller, and would each major section of the animation be a movieclip that would be trigger by a frame in the master timeline?
    I pretty much have the whole thing storyboarded out, I'm just wondering the best most efficient way to do it.
    One other question: is it bad practice to have a raster visual asset with an alpha based mask on the main timeline that overlays on top of all the nested clips? For example I have a "frame" with is an png with a abstract white border with the middle masked out that remains static throughout the entire movie. Or am I better off applying it to each movieclip.
    Thanks.

    It will probably be easier to manage if you make each section a moiveclip by itself,  That way you aren't always manipulating the main timeline to fit in or adjust for changes in each section.  You can either spread them out along the timeline, using frame comands to navigate to the different sections, or you can have them all in one frame and control navigation by controlling the visibility of each section.
    If the frame you mention is to be applied to each section, then having one on the main timeline to cover all would be easier to manage in most cases.

  • What's the best way to convert from Gmail to iCloud?

    I currently use Google's free exchange server and sync my contacts and calendar to Google even though I pretty much do all my emailing from either mac, iphone, or ipad. Since it sounds like it's hard to sync to both google and icloud at the same time, would like to make the switch. Is there a FAQ out there? Can I keep my google email and sync just the contacts w/iCloud or is it an all-or-nothing proposition? If so, is that what others do? Any advice / pointers appreciated. Thanks.

  • Looking for best way to convert 35 mm slides to digital images

    Hello Apple Community,
    Am researching best ways to convert several hundred 35 mm slides into digital images.  There are numerous scanners/converters out there but want to ensure I get the best unit compatable with my iMac (27 inch, Late 2009).  Any suggestions welcome.

    For scanning 35mm slides you need a scanner with a good photometric resolution and geometric resolution.
    For the photometric resolution: Get a scanner with a high density range (D-max) value, to get a good resolution of highlights and shadows.
    For the geometric resolution - sharpness and detail - try to get at least 3200 dp,i to be able to get good 8"x10" prints from your scanned slides, a higher dpi value, if you want to be able to print larger images.

  • Copying old VHS tapes via Director's Cut box into iMovie '08

    Hi all, I'm trying to copy some old VHS home movies via a Director's Cut digitizer box into iMovie '08.
    As the tape plays from the VHS player, the picture in the import window freezes every few seconds and then restarts, with the import timer resetting (in the top right of the window)? It's almost as if the digitizer box or iMovie is picking up some old editing codes and doing its own scene selections. Sometimes it does it after only a few seconds, other times it will go for a minute or so.
    After it has processed the old tape, when you're in preview playback, fractions of the picture and sound are missing where it's done this odd "cutting". Any ideas?
    Thanks

    -Power everything off.
    -Make sure all your connections are correct: a/v from your VCR to the Miglia ... FW from the Miglia to your iMac. Make sure the Miglia is the ONLY FireWire device connected to your iMac. No other FireWire devices should be connected.
    -Turn on the Miglia. Make sure it is in NTSC mode; toggle it to NTSC if necessary. Then turn it off. Wait 10-15 seconds. Then turn it on again (required when you change between PAL and NTSC).
    -Turn on your VCR, with a tape ready to play.
    -Then boot your iMac.
    -Start up iMovie.
    -Make sure your iMovie Preferences show New Project Frame Rate = 29.97 fps (NTSC) - not 25 fps (PAL).
    -Create a new iMovie project.
    -Start your VCR playback BEFORE you begin capturing in iMovie.
    Let us know if this solves the problem.
