Best way to set up sync for iPhone, iCloud and iTunes

Though have used iPhone for a number of years and a big fan, am only now jumping into Apple-land - just bought a mac mini.
Currently, my iPhone and iPad sync with iCloud - all my contacts and mail are available.
I set up my Mac mini with the iClound userid/password - so I get my mail and contacts there too.
All nice and good.
Now I have this additional option - if I connect my iPhone to the mac mini, I can sync with iTunes. I can sync contacts, photos, etc. etc. What will this do that my iCloud sync already doesn't do? I am worried about turning any of these options on and trying because I might end up with duplicate contacts. [For example, I copied all my photos to the macmini using iPhoto. Now when I check the box for synching photos in iTunes, the required space on my iPhone doubles - suggesting that I might end up with duplicates....]
As you maybe can tell from above - I don't currently sync music, videos, podcasts, etc. I want to start doing that. Question again - what is the difference between syncing with iTunes on this mac mini vs. iCloud syncing?

That was a loong and perhaps too generic a question. Let me ask something very specific.
My iPhone, iPad, and Mac Mini all sync with iCloud and I have my contacts accessible on all three.
Now when I connect my iPhone/iPad to my Mac Mini, iTunes sync becomes another option.
If I now check the box that says "sync contacts", will I end up with duplicate contacts all over the place? I don't want to try it to see if I will or not because it can be a huge pain to get rid of the duplicates.

So do I have to hook up an Ethernet cable to both the Uverse AND my computer from the Time Capsule?
I'm not sure that I understand everything that you want to do and where devices will be located.
The Time Capsule must connect to the "main" Uverse router using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection. An Ethernet cable can be run up to 300+ feet with virtually no loss, so you should be able to locate the Time Capsule wherever you want.....unless you have a very large estate.
If you want the Time Capsule to strengthen the wireless signal provided by the Uverse router, then the Time Capsule must be located in the area where you need that additional signal strength.
If I understand your post correctly, you plan to install the Time Capsule in the office? When you do this, you can configure the Time Capsule to create a wireless signal that uses the exact same wireless network name and password as the Uverse wireless network.
That will provide a much stronger signal for your Uverse wireless network in the office area. Hopefully, the bedroom that you mention is close to the office, so it will pick up the stronger wireless signal from the Time Capsule.
The iMac in the office can connect to the Time Capsule using another short Ethernet cable connection, or the iMac can connect using wireless. A wired connection is always preferred, if possible.
At this point, I guess the first question would be.......
Do you have a location for the Time Capsule that will be close to the office....and...the bedroom where you want a stronger wireless signal?

Best way to set-up U Verse, Time Capsule and Express to Extend Network

I'm trying to extend my WIFI signal with AP Express and TC using an AT&T U Verse router. Neither the Express nor the TC are directly connected to the U Verse router. Both the Express and the TC show they are connected to the network but when I try and edit the settings to extend the network rather than join the network they both show as not connected any longer. Before on DSL the Express and TC were connected as extending the network (slow but connected). The house is 3 levels U Verse in in the basement. Trying to get a connection on the 3rd floor. We have multiple iPads, iPhones, Mac Book Pro's, an i Mac and Direct TV receivers.
What's the best way to set this up to extend the range of what we have?

You cannot extend range from non-apple routers.
So both the TC and express will join the wireless of the uverse and then become dumb clients..
You need at least one of the two units plugged into the uverse by ethernet.. then the other device can extend that network.
Consider using EOP adapters if your distance is such that even with the correct setup you don't get the range you need. Or better still do it properly and wire it with ethernet.
It is possible to use the Express as a bridge..
So say setup on the first floor.. a wireless bridge from the express to the uverse.. then plug the ethernet into the TC.. and use the TC in bridge mode.. it will not be fast but it can work.
Reset everything to factory and start over.. as you will not be able to get this working without a full reset of the apple routers.
Note still not ideal but it might give you more range than extend wireless with say express plugged into the uverse.

Best way to set up homesharing via airport express and NAS

I've just bought an Airport express and was wondering what the best way to set it up would be so that I can play music stored on my NAS, controlled by my iphone / ipad. I have itunes match as well, and don't want my phone to be streaming the music from wherever. The airport express will be wired via ethernet to the same router as the NAS on which everything is stored. I don't want the problem with network dropouts and hammering the bandwidth and battery on my iphone to deal with.
How can I set it up to be taking the music straight from the NAS rather than streaming it. I'd also rather not have to turn off itunes match everytime, because it takes an age to repopulate the library when I turn it back on.

You cannot use homesharing to play content from anywhere but iTunes on a computer. The content doesn't have to be on that computer but it has to be part of the iTunes library on your computer. In addition the computer has to be on with iTunes running.
It doesn't matter what sonos can do, sonos is a lame duck in comparison to iTunes because iTunes gives you many features sonos can't, all because it doesn't use iTunes and homesharing.

How to print a selection of pages from a 3000 page PDF without having to scroll two wheels! Also is there a way to set printer options for just black and white? Seems like there is a lot missing here?

I have been using this for school work as much as possible and have come across a problem. With my lack of knowledge for apple it seems as though I can't navigate myself to a easy answer. The problem hits when I am printing pages off of a large document, and I don't want to print the entire document in color but I have no way "that I can find" for a black and white print option...
----- also a larger issue, when printing I need to select 1 page or even 20 pages... The time it takes to use a scroll wheel and the fact if you try and scroll fast sometimes you click off the screen then you have to start scrolling all over again... It seems like you would beagle to input from say page 1224 to 1236.... Instead I have a scroll a wheel? Just doesn't make sense...?

Yes, that fixed it, thanks! I had no idea they clashed like that. I ruthlessly purged all other tables of contents, and then used Layout > Table of Contents to create a new one, and it worked.
It made more sense after seeing in this thread that table of contents styles are more like presets or entities than styles.

Organising Mail - What's the best way of setting up rules for aliases?

I'm a recent switcher, and am enjoying all the new things to learn about the mac and OSX (Tiger 10.4.5), so please forgive any basic questions I may ask. I have searched the forums and not found the answers to my particular situation.
I have a mac account (shared with my wife) and its all setup in Mail fine and dandy. Lets call this email [email protected] I have then created two aliases for us to use, lets call these [email protected] and [email protected]
My wife has an iBook and I have a PowerMac G5 - both running Mail.
My goal is to get to a situation where we can both see emails sent to [email protected] - but we have individual rules to move out our respective aliases.
e.g. I would like to see emails addressed to [email protected], but not necessarily to [email protected] My wife would like to see the converse of [email protected], but not [email protected]
Q1) If an email is sent to both [email protected] and [email protected] - do I get two copies? If so, how do I setup a rule to move only one?
Q2) If I have read the other postings elsewhere, am I right to believe that moving an email to a folder "On My Mac" it will delete it from the server? So when my wife checks email on her iBook, it won't be there?
Currently, I have attempted to set up a folder in .mac mail called "Wife's email" and "Hubby's email" - which means at least it doesn't get removed from the server.
Is there a better way of organising your incoming email? How has other people organised their mac aliases?

There are several different ways to aid in what you ask. If you are not wanting to move emails, a simple approach would be to create Smart Mailboxes, which are not really mailboxes, but only lists created by some search rules, and the messages remain in the original Inbox, until actually moved.
Set up one to list those addressed to Shared and Hubby, and another to list those addressed to Shared and Wife. See:

Each of you would mostly ignore the Inbox, until taking some action, such as deleting or moving to On My Mac mailboxes (which are New Mailboxes, as opposed to New Smart Mailboxes).
This seems to suit what you desire, but if not, post further details.

What is best way to set up Ipods for my children? One lives with ex and I plan to use facetime and texting to communicate. Should he have his own itunes account?

I started out by setting up under my itunes account. When I tried the facetiming my iphone with my sons new ipod it said that I was calling even though I set it up in his name. Also, I don't know how to try to face time him. How do I add him as a contact to facetime him. Also, his step sister will be setting hers up also and she will want to be able to text and face time him. How should we go about setting all this up? First, you should have to Apple IDs
Second, you must have a Wi-Fi connection.
Facetime Calls
To add them go to address book and put in the Apple ID username under email.
Go to facetime, click the contacts button on the bottom. Click the name they gave them. Click the email you used for their Apple ID. It should start a call with the device hooked up with that Apple ID.
Set-Up Facetime
Go to settings. Click facetime. Sign-in with the Apple ID you are using. When someone calls that address it should give you a notification.
Texting
If you are getting a new iPod you will be getting with iOS 5 wich includes iMessage to other iOS 5 devices. Just click iMessage at the home screen and type in the name of the person with the Apple ID you want to text OR type in the Apple ID you want to text. You should start a convorsation with the iDevice hooked up to that Apple ID.
Set-Up iMessage (a.k.a. Texting)
Go to settings. Click iMessage. Sign-in with the Apple ID you are using. When someone texts that address it will notify you.

How do I allow users to backup iPhone EXCLUDING Exchange data (no CONTACTS, Mail, Calendar, Tasks, etc) for BOTH iCloud and iTunes?

We are EXTREMELY sensitive to corporate data and we wish to force compliance to our standards. We understand people need to back up THEIR data, but we are not willing to allow them to backup OUR data. We define OUR data to be any data that is entered into our Corporate Mail environment (Exchange 2007). Is there a way to allow for backups to either iCloud or iTunes that does not back up Exchange Contacts, Mail, Calendar, Tasks, etc. ?
We are using Mobile Iron which provides a way to disable BackUp via iPhone profiles being distributed, but we wish to allow people the ability to backup their content, again, just not ours. And we've seen some very similar threads.
We have noticed that the backups do not backup Mail and Calendar items, but it does backup Contacts. That's the sticking point.
Any help would be most appreciated. This is a major concern.

OK, sounded like a good suggestion, perhaps it only appeared the data was being backed up, but in reality the connection was being made and the contacts were some how syncing back w/ the cached credentials restablishing sync with the server. That would not have explained why messages and calendar items didn't resync; but I was willing to take it for a test spin. Wiped device, changed password in AD (so that it couldn't sync), began restore, and after restore with AD password changed prior to restore, the two test Exchange contacts were regrettably on my phone. Further test the reasonable theory of maybe credentials are being restored and the only contact data is being actually synced to get the data back on the phone, I added a third contact.
Now just to be belt and suspenders (to make sure something isn't happening at the restore where it get's the contact information at that exact window of time), I am wiping my again to see if the third contact (that's in my exchange contacts on the server) makes it to my device possibly during the sync, but I'm pretty sure what is happening is that he contact is making it "or being" some how categorized as "phone" data as opposed to Exchange data and being backed up there erroneously. For instance if you were to create a contact on an iPhone prior to establishing a sync relationship with the exchange server, it would take that contact and create that contact on your exchange server for you so that your "phone" data and your "exchange" data (as it relates to contacts at least) are in sync.
If you grant this assumption, then, when syncing Exchange data, the "phone" data is being created. When the back up takes place, I believe there is no distinction or bifurcation of these two data types. Phone data is backed up with no rhyme or reasoning related to its history or origin of creation (i.e. where it came from), it's not a contact from Exchange, it's just a contact. I believe Apple needs to tattoo Exchange contacts in some fashion or provide a "transparency" kind of paradigm or model used for calendars, where you can see two sources intermingled in a view, but they are truly not (you just see all).
Apple has indicated they understand the severity of this and are looking into it, but if anyone else has any insight or profiles not discussed on

Syncing the iPhone 4 and iTunes 9.2 is a miserable experience

I continue to have weird and random issues syncing iPhone 4 with iTunes 9.2. I will not have issues for days and then it will start. This morning, I had to do 4 syncs before it would complete. The prior attempts just ended in lockups: locked up sending a podcast to the iPhone 4, locked up at the end of the backup, locked up during a "verify".
This is the same PC I was using to sync my iPhone 3GS. There is either a big, big problem with iTunes 9.2 OR iPhone 4 OR both. Apple needs to get this fixed pronto.

Best way to set up wireless for roaming RDP user to prevent disconnects

I am trying to resolve a wireless issue for a busy medical office I work at; it is an 11,000 sf building with many exam rooms and offices, and 20-30 wireless users. We tried placing three WAP4410N devices around the building on different channels with a shared SSID, so that users would have connectivity anywhere in the building. The medical assistants and doctors connect to their EMR software using laptops connected via RDP and we seem to have an issue with connections dropping briefly when they move throughout the building. The disruption is enough that their RDP connections often become unresponsive and they have to take time to disconnect and reconnect again. The other issue is that the laptops would jump to a stronger signal when, for instance, a nurse walked to the front of the building to get a patient and came close to a different WAP, but then when they came back to the exam area, the device would hang onto that signal as it grew very weak instead of jumping back to the closer WAP.
We've also had issues with the a couple of the devices becoming completely unresponsive but I am hoping the firmware update will fix that. Is there a way to make this work properly with this model of router? How many devices should we need for full coverage? If they just aren't up to this task, what should we be looking at to replace them? From what I have been able to research, what we are looking for is 'seamless roaming' and these devices don't support that. But I was told by a support tech that even the Aironet WAPs will have a few dropped packets going between APs so I would hate to upgrade yet again and still have the problem remain.

The issue your describing is normal for WAP4410N's.
Since there is not a wireless controller used with those WAPs, there is no way to control the roaming so that it is seamless. Without the controller, wireless signals actually have to drop before they can move from one signal to another.
The only solution to get seamless roaming is to include a wireless controller into your network. The small business APs in our current inventory do not support.
Aironets with a wireless controller is your best solution. Would just need to see what Cisco has that works within your budget.

Best Way to Set up Mac for Sale

Hi,
I have an older Mac (G4, Dual 867) with Tiger installed and am going to be selling it. I'd like to clean it off before doing so, but I wasn't sure the best steps to take. Reformat the hard drives first, I would assume...? Then to reinstall the OS, would I install from the original CD's and then connect to the internet to grab all the upgrades? Or is there an easier/better way?!

Best way to compress to DVD for computer monitors and TVS

I have to build reels for directors based on samples of their work. I am trying to figure if it is possible to make all their media look good on DVD. Its coming from lots of sources; film, ntsc, pal etc....In order for best DVD viewing (and that means watching on progressive and ntsc monitors) any body recommend what to conform the media to? I have read that all hollywood DVDs have their media at 24p which looks great on all monitors no matter what cause DVD players flag for pulldown and make those conversions themselves.
One of my bosses does not want to see any interlacing ever. Which makes my job very difficult b/c I am making lots of DVDs from 29.97fps footage and on computer monitors, the interlaced frames are very apparent.

Photo JPEG is not a format that Final Cut Pro works with natively. You will have to render every time you make a change.
All interlaced formats have the option of making them progressive in QuickTime Player's Export > Options > Settings dialog. You can also do a quick Deinterlace by pressing command and J to get the QT Properties window -click on Video Track at the top, then the deinterlace button at bottom right.
Compressor also has a setting to change field dominance to None and deinterlace (don't use both).

my iphone backs up to icloud. does that backup include ALL music on the device--whether purchased from iTunes or not?
i have a purchased itunes match account, so I thought that allowed you to store all music on the device in icloud, even if you did not buy it from the Itunes store. If this is true, how come my playlist on the iPhone works fine, but the same playlist and songs on my labtop itunes account have exclaimation marks by them and say the file can't be located?

The iPhone backup doesn't contain any music. It does note any musicon the phone that was purchased from from the iTunes store and redownloads it if you ever need to restore the backup.
iTunes Match is separate from your personal iCloud account. It will match or upload all elligible songs to your iTunes Matc account in iCloud, up to 25,000 songs not including those purchased from the iTunes store. However, your iTunes library on your computer will continue to reference songs stored in your library on your computer unless you delete them. If you are seeing exclamation marks, it indicates that iTunes can no longer find your songs in their original locations. You may have disconnected an external drive where they are stored, or moved them to another location, in which case you'll need to either click on the songs and navigate to their new locations so iTunes can find them, or restore them to their original locations.
