Best Wi-Fi Setup using new Zyxel PK 5001 Z modem from Century Link

My wi-fi setup had consisted of a CenturyLink 660 modem and a white "original generation" Airport Extreme. I have a printer connected by ethernet and phones, apple TV, satellite TV, etc. connected to the Airport Extreme network. The modem died and CenturyLink sent me a Zyxel PK5001Z modem/router combination. I set it up according to their directions and connected my Airport Extreme via ethernet. All is working and I now have 2 LANs: my original working through the Airport Extreme and a new one just using the Zyxel. Both show up under the wi-fi symbol and I can click on the one I want to use. The Zyxel shows a transmit rate of 75-130 and the Airport Extreme always shows 54. It is a "g" and the Zyxel is a "n".
Since I've gotten this far, I want to finish up with the best wi-fi setup I can get. I've tried to educate myself through internet research and I know a lot more than I did a couple of days ago but still need some direction and advice. I see my choices as this;
1. Stay with my prior setup described above and ignore the new LAN created by the Xyxel.
2. Disconnect my AE and use the Zyxel only. Reset all my connected devices.
3. Buy a new Airport Extreme and use it just by hooking up with ethernet and setting it up like the current one.
4. Do "3" above but get CenturyLink to set the Zyxel in bridge mode (whatever that is).
5. Buy an Airport Express and use it instead of the Airport Extreme and setup as in "3" or "4" above.

Stay with my prior setup described above and ignore the new LAN created by the Xyxel.
Not sure why you would even consider this if you care about the performance on your network.  The Xyxel is running circles around the older AirPort Extreme.
Disconnect my AE and use the Zyxel only. Reset all my connected devices.
Simplest solution if you don't really need two wireless networks.
Buy a new Airport Extreme and use it just by hooking up with ethernet and setting it up like the current one.
Makes sense if you also have newer computers and devices that can actually handle the faster 802.11ac wireless speeds. Otherwise, not much reason to do this unless you want to upgrade your devices in the future.
Do "3" above but get CenturyLink to set the Zyxel in bridge mode (whatever that is).
Only if Zyxel support is willing to help you do this. I imagine they will be less than thrilled if you ask them. If things don't work, Zyxel will blame Apple.  When you call Apple, they will blame Zyxel.
Buy an Airport Express and use it instead of the Airport Extreme and setup as in "3" or "4" above.
Don't think that would offer you any better performance that you already have with the Zyxel.

  • Best Server / JSP setup - Use Tomcat??

Hi, I am currently working on a solution to provide JSP pages.
The current setup I have is IIS5-->AJPV12(ISAPI)-->tomcat3.2.1
I am having a few problems with this setup, the major one being that I can only get 220 simultaneous connections.
Is there a better setup that will provide me with more performance and less memory constrictions. (I believe the bottleneck is the AJPv12 (ISAPI) adapter, as once the 250 user mark is reached it doesnt accomodate any more, and the ISAPI.log file is full of errors.
Would upgrading to Tomcat 4 or even 5, result in being able to have more synchronous users. I heard jetti (probably spelt wrong was 3 times faster than tomcat from another developer but yet to come across it)
What setups are everybody else using??
(PS Where do I insert a -xms , -xmx command when running tomcat as Ive heard if you provide more heap that may solve some performance issues, but would performance limit number of users? - I use just the tomcat startup batch file - startup. Do i just provide it as a runtime command using this batch file- what are good setting for max and min heap)

Ask that question on the Tomcat user list, you'd get a better reply and perhaps a solution. [email protected], but you have to sign up, do a search on google for the page for signing up to Tomcat user-list.
    Good luck

  • HT4623 Updated iPad2 to ios 7.0.4. iPad restarts and wants to go through setup. I get to the "Set Up iPad" screen; it is asking to restore or setup as new iPad. I pick "Restore from iTunes Backup". I do the restore, but it loops back again to setup

the iPad seems to be in a loop between setup and restore.  Not sure if I did something wrong, maybe selecting a wrong option after the ios update.

  • Setup a new Macbook Pro to minimize application slowdowns over time

    Hi,
I own a dual G5 2.0 tower which has become (over time) extremely slow...it seems I get the spinning beachball all too often, but have plenty of ram and HD space. Even when opening JPEGS.
I am buying a macbook pro this w/e and was wondering what the best way to setup the new computer because I want to use it as an HD FCP editing station (on location), but from time to time use applications like aquisition and bittorrent which really seem to bog the system down. I assume not using migration assistant, and re-installing from scratch is a good idea.
Forgive what may be basic questions, but do I setup a partition initially on the internal drive (and have 2 system folders or something similar?) or will simply setting up different users to access only certain applications help? (I assume not).
Obviously a concern is the laptop drive is small 160GB 7200RPM but I can guess most of the time I will be running a GRAID for the video editing files, and bigger aperture library (I may have a small select library on the internal drive to show clients and friends "on the go")
I really appreciate any tips or suggestions and hope that my questions make sense. I realize I want the computer to "do it all" but can't afford it to be strictly an editing station, as I'll be selling the G5 to help pay for the macbook pro!
    Much appreciated,

Understand that P2P software operates under the premise that you will have many connections to peers. Each network connection requires memory and CPU cycles to operate properly without timing out the connection or slowing down transfers. In fact, the faster the Internet connection and the more peers connected to your P2P application, the more resource intensive the P2P software will be. You will want to either close the P2P application or tweak it's settings so that it uses minimal bandwidth and resources while you are performing other tasks on your MBP. Try Azureus for torrents as it allows you to tweak settings very nicely.
Partitioning your hard drive will accomplish nothing in this case. Better to invest in an external FW800 drive for the improving performance while video editing or where you need additional storage.

  • Setup as New iPhone - Camera Roll Pitfalls?

I am expecting my iPhone 6 on Friday and am planning to choose the "Setup as New iPhone" option rather than restoring from an iTunes or iCloud backup.  Historically I have always restored from a backup but when my current iPhone 5 was having signal strength issues the guy I spoke to at the Genius Bar said sometimes it is best to do a clean install so you don't carry forward any corrupt files.
So I am trying to anticipate any potential problems / things to be aware of.  I'm fine re-downloading all of my apps, music files from iTunes Match and re-doing all my settings.  One thing that seems like it could be an issue is getting all my photos and videos from my existing Camera Roll back on the new phone in the new Camera Roll in chronological order.  I've searched around and found a bunch of dated links with various suggestions for how to do this, including emailing all your photos back to yourself.  Seems crazy given I have almost 2,000 photos and videos.
Any simple and foolproof suggestions for how to do this?
Any other things that I won't be able to restore exactly as I had them?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the replies.  So when I import the photos to iPhoto on my Mac, doesn't it put them in all sorts of various event folders?  I have Photostream turned on so most photos I take on my iPhone are already on my Mac when I plug my iPhone into it - sometimes a handful are not.  So the pics are scattered all over the place in the various photostream folders (August 2014 Photostream, etc) plus any leftovers that are imported manually.  I would need to select all of those folders and sync them back to my iPhone through iTunes and then they end up in Events folders under "Albums" in the photo app on my iPhone?  That's not ideal.  What about videos?

    Hello maspeds45
When you remove iTunes, you are just removing the software; the media files still remain in place. Just follow the steps in the article below to remove iTunes from your computer if you are on Windows. If you are a Mac, just download the install file and it will reinstall the software for you.

  • I deleted my iCloud account, but now I can't use Find My iPhone. And I can't setup a new account because it writes that this account was assigned to iCloud already...

Hi guys. I updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 5... Its great, I wanted to test out the new iCloud so I enabled it on first iOS 5 setup.
So now I wanna delete it. So I did. Because my battery just wont work the way it used to on iOS 4.3.5. I guess it tries to connect to the internet so it could auto backup stuff. Well I dont need it. Mainly because I don't want to pay for extra space, and my free 5GB are almost done. Also I rather back it up on my PC.
I deleted my iCloud account but now I can't use FindMyiPhone! When I connect to the app it wont find my phone. When I enabled iCloud again it worked.
So I deleted it again and it stoped working again... I tried to setup a new account via MobileMe "Settings> email blah blah blah" and it didn't work because the account was already assigned to use iCloud only I guess...
    What should I do?

Its solved I just restored it to that point

Please read my question carefully, this is, I think, a question for the experts. It's not the usual name change question.
When I setup my new MacBook Pro, something slipped by me and my computer was named First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro (using my real first and last name).
I changed the computer name in Preferences/Sharing to a new name and Preferences/Accounts to just be Mike. I can right click on my account name, choose advanced, and see that everything looks right.
However, If I do a scan of my network with my iPhone using the free version of IP Scanner, it lists my computer as First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro! And it lists the user as First-Last.
So even though another Mac just sees my new computer name, and my home folder is Mike, somewhere in the system the original setup with my full name is still stored. And it's available on a network scan. So my full name might show up at a coffee shop.
Can I fully change the name without doing a complete re-install of Lion and all my apps?

One thought... you said the iPhone displayed your computer's old name? I think that you must have used the iPhone with this computer before you changed the name. So no one else's iPhone should display your full name unless that iPhone had previously connected to your Mac. For example, I did this exact same change, and I use the Keynote Remote app to connect with my MacBook Pro. It would no longer link with my MacBook Pro under the old name, and I found that I had to unlink and then create a new link under the new name. So the answer to your question is, there is nothing you need to do on the Mac, but rather the phone, and no other phone will display your full name.

  • What is the best backup drive to use to backup a windows xp pc and to transfer that data to a new iMac i5 May 2011 and then to backup my iMac on it?

What is the best backup drive to use to backup my windows xp pc and to transfer these files to my iMac i5 new in May 2011 and then to backup my i5 iMac?

Get something with both USB and Firewire connections, as big as you can afford.  Format it Fat 32, plug it into the XP machine with USB, drag and drop the files you want to keep, plug it into the iMac with Firewire, drag and drop again.  If you want to use it just to back up your Mac in future, reformat it Mac OS Extended and enable Time Machine.  If you're likely to want to share the drive with Windows PCs in future, leave it Fat 32.

  • Use iPod Touch 4th gen iTunes backup to setup a new iPad Mini 1 - issues

    Hi all,
I've just used my Pod Touch 4th gen iTunes backup to setup a new iPad Mini 1 but none of the apps were installed on the iPad mini. Only the default apps are installed.
None of the photos from the camera roll were installed either, apart from a few 'screen shots' I have taken.
iPod Touch is iOS 6.1.6 and the iPad mini is 8.1
There was a warning advising that some of the apps in the iPod backup might not be compatible with the iPad.
If it makes a difference, I'm using one Apple ID for the App store and another one for iCloud. When I was prompted for the Apple ID during setup on the Mini, I entered the iCloud ID.
Interestingly, when I went into the App store on the Mini it showed the ID I use for that rather than the iCloud one, which seemed good.
Is this what I should expect to happen in this situation or am I doing something wrong ?
    Many thanks. Mark

I've managed to get the apps loaded without having to do it manualy !! :-)
It was a case of RTFM - I forgot to do a 'Sync' after restoring the 4G's iTunes backup into the iPad.
Transfer content from an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to a new device - Apple Support
For some unknown reason, the Camera Roll images and Videos still weren't restored to the new device.
This is not too much of an issue because I've exported them out of the 4G using the awesome 'Photo Sync' app. Despite it's name it actually does an 'export'and not a sync, which I think makes image management easier on the PC side

  • Component Services (COM+) re-installation or repair: using Easy Transfer to setup a new pc breaks COM+????

Recently I have noticed a third party application we are using in our company has not been working properly on certain computers.  I contacted the vendor for support, and they said I should check if My Computer under Control Panel-->Administrative
Tools-->Component Services--> Computers has a red line through it.  On all the computers where the app is not working, this line appears indicating that there is a problem with Component Services.
Doing some further research on the internet, I have found several posts that indicate that if a computer was setup using Easy Transfer, that this leads to a "broken" Component Services.
And indeed---every one of the computers with a broken Component Services was one that had been setup for a new user by using Easy Transfer.  The issue with Component Services does not appear on computers that were a "clean" install.
So--I know my third-party app is not working properly because of a problem in COM+.  There is info to indicate that using Easy Transfer somehow "breaks" Component Services---but no one seems to know how it does this.  There is also no clear advice
or info on how to fix it properly.  Just some general advice to "reinstall Windows".
Can anyone advise if it is possible to re-install or fix COM+ Component Services WITHOUT having to do a complete reinstall of Windows?  I have setup quite a few pcs in my company using the Easy Transfer.   Is a complete OS reinstall the
    only way to fix this?

    Hi,
    Yes, agree with Luigi.
Furthermore, if you try to migrate the systems in your enterprise environment, I suggest using the User State Migration Tool 4.0.
    More information:
User State Migration Tool 4.0 User's Guide
You may try to use the installation disk to test if it is able to repair the Component Services.

  • How do I setup a new Mini IPad using ICloud backup from my IPad 2?

I have an ipad2 which has cloud backup - I have bought an IPad mini an d when I tried to setup using the backup from Cloud, because the Mini did not have the latest iOS, it would not allow the backup. I then used iTunes to setup and upgraded the software, but now I would like to access Cloud so that I can restore the Apps, photos, music, and data. Do I have to reset the Mini, and if so, will the upgraded iOS be retained so I can access the Cloud. Alternatively if I synch with my computer, is that going to be the most efficient method.

    Restore from iCloud Backup
    1. Erase all contents and settings (Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and settings)
    2. You'll be asked twice to confirm
    3. You'll see Apple logo and progress bar
    4. You'll see a big iPad logo on screen
    5. Configuration start
    6. Set language
    7. Set country
    8. Enable Location Service
    9. Select network, enter password and join network
    10. You'll be given 3 options (a) Setup as New iPad (b) Restore from iCloud Backup (c) Restore from iTune Backup
    11. Selected Restore from iCloud Backup
    12. You'll be required to enter Apple ID and Password
    13. Agree to Terms and Conditions
    14. Select Backup file
    15. You'll see progress bar
    16. Red slider will appear; slide to unlock; step #1 to #16 is fast
    17. Pre-installed apps will be restored first
    18. Message: Purchased apps and media will now be automatically downloaded
    19. You'll see a pageful of apps with Waiting/Loading/Installing
    20. When the restore process is complete, your device will restart. You should connect the device to iTunes to sync data not contained in the backup (such as music, videos, apps, and so on).

  • Did I need to setup as new or use a backup

I bought a 3Gs today, because my original iphone started acting strangley. When I got home, I wanted to get my contacts onto my new phone. When it asked if I wanted to setup as new or use my last backup, I chose my last backup. Did I make a mistake doing that? I had been so hesitant about getting the new one since I had gone through four problem phones at and right after the release. I hope I didn't mess something up. It seems to have a good screen although you can see the warm tone difference but not as bad as the others I had tried. Can anyone tell me if I have messed things up by using my last backup instead of new?

You can do whichever you like.
    Is your iphone working properly?
    If so, stop worrying.
