Big Video Project on FCE HD

Ok you pros, I need some help.
I'm creating promo video for a charity organization that I work with. It needs to be about 4-5 minutes long, look great, and energize people for the work we do. With that in mind, I have the following questions...
1. What is the best way to go about planning such a project, from filming to final production. Does anyone know of a good flow chart or something for me to conceptually wrap my mind around this thing?
2. This movie will have 4 different movements. Is it best to set it all up and edit it as one big sequence in FCE, or to make multiple sequences and put them together at the end? (E.G., title, interviews, etc.)
3. If I need to put together multiple sequences, how do I do that?
4. What are some good stock video sites out there?
5. Any other tips on doing a big project (at least big for me) would be welcomed.
Thanks!

have a look at one of the short films on recycling here:
http://www.number-10.gov.uk/output/Page3638.asp
(I know they're not specifically about your area but bear with me)
This shows a variety of basic techniques used to keep the viewer's attention - talking head interviews intercut with images, cross- cutting between interviewees, music bed, sound bridges (i.e where voiceover connects video items), illustrative cutaways (so that the viewer isn't bored by looking solely at a talking head interview).
On a sheet of A4, start with a short sentence describing the aims of the piece.
Then a paragraph including basic required elements, e.g interviews with x, y and z, voxpops, any voiceover (if you're not using a professional VO artiste, ensure you use someone with an intelligble and interesting voice)any statistics, graphics, stills, archive material that you wish to include.
Then on another sheet of A4, make a simple storyboard - on one side write video and the other side, audio and then list what images, shot for shot, you want, accompanied by what audio and the proposed duration.
Eg. Video - interview with x, intercut with shots of... Audio - Voiceover (VO) from interview with x, Duration - 30 secs.
Decide on appropriate locations for the interviews (appropriate and if possible visually interesting)
Decide what the interviewees are required to cover and make bullet points of any questions. Speak to the interviewees prior to shooting to let them know what's required, when and where.
Make a list of any props/equipment required and don't forget release forms if required or any permissions.
I'm sure you don't need to be reminded of the dreaded H&S requirements - don't film from a motorway hard shoulder or field with a ***** and aggressive bull for instance - don't laugh, I know people who've proposed it !
The secret is thorough preparation and competent technical knowledge.
Use a decent 3 CCD prosumer cam, using manual settings and an external mic. (IMHO, there's nothing worse than autofocus and crappy audio). Stick the cam on a decent tripod and pay attention to framing.
The reason is gave the link to the short recycling video is that you can reverse the process by analyzing the film and writing a storyboard from it which should help in writing your own.
In FCE, I would set-up a sequence for the 4 different 'movements' - do you mean chapters? - (file>new>sequence) and in the browser, I would put clips in separate bins (file>new>bin) i.e. a separate bin for interview, voxpops, cutaways - although in a short project this might not be necessary.

  • How do I move a video project from Encore to AIR via Flash Builder?

I've got a rather complex video project with lots of submenus (that works as a DVD - so it is "debugged") that I need to be able to export from Encore into an app to upload on the iTunes store and Android Market. So far, I've managed to export the project via Encore's Flash output and test the results using a web browser (it works). Everything got saved in a new folder structure with an index.html file pointing to the flashdvd.swf file pointing to the AuthoredContent.xml file that actually holds all the information on the file structure (there are 99 files in the Sources subfolder) and uses the default generated Theme.xml file.
What I need to do is to somehow import all this into Flash Builder as a project so it can become the source for the various "app" platforms. My questions are:
    1. I've got Flash Builder 4.5 - do I need to upgrade to 4.7 in order to import the project or can this be done in 4.5?
    2. Is there some intermediate step that I'm missing?
    3. Will Flash Builder be able to repackage all these files into the file specs required by each target platform (I'm assuming it will - is that a valid assumption)?
    And moving downstream a bit...
    4. Since this is a video based project with over 200 megabytes of F4V content, how will the content arrive on the end user device? Will it have to be  streamed or can it be downloaded? - this is a big issue should the app become popular and we be forced to maintain a streaming server somewhere. What about server sizing in such an event? For example: is there a way to estimate how much bandwidth is required per 1,000 instances?

Oh, no i think i clicked Solved but it's not at all solved and i don'tt see a way to reverse it and clicked unsolved.
I'v tried reading the Manuals but still don't see the solution.
I think I've misworded my question.  Perhaps i shall have to start a new question.
What i want to know is very basic.
How do i take a video i see on either youTube or another side and put it either on my iPod (i guess via iTunes) or put it into a document or an email??
Do i copy some link?  Copy what exactly?  Do i click and drag something?
I think if i knew how to get a video to iTunes I could be able to sync it.
But i don't know the first thing, how to get a video onto iTunes, or email, or a document.
    Thank you both.

  • 16:9 Help needed. Workflow: extracted video from DVD, FCE HD edit & DVDSP.

    Hi,
I have a project where according to the camera person it was shot in 16:9 with the camera (assuming a DV camcorder of some sort). It was captured from the camera and converted to a DVD (VIDEO_TS folder and everything) and sent to me for editing.
What I need help with is a workflow (and settings) to edit and output this properly.
    1) My first hiccup comes in the extract. When I view the DVD that was sent to me, the video looks squished as it squeezes the video into the 4:3 aspect ratio. I was using MPEG Streamclip to extract it. I've extracted it in a 16:9 QT format and it looks fine in FCE HD. However, once I started reading more about editing 16:9 video in the FCE PDF manual, I'm wondering if I should have kept it as 4:3 and then toggled the Anamorphic setting for the sequence.
    2) Once I have the correct source to edit - are there any considerations on export for compression? I read somewhere about a program to set the anamorpgic bit for iDVD, but plan to use DVDSP so I'm assuming I can skip this step. I also read in the forum about a QT Conversion setting to use. Do I need to? I was planning to export a reference movie and use Compressor with that. I was planning to use a "Widescreen" compressor option. Is this correct?
    3) I know this is beyond this forum, but any advice on what settings should I use in producing the DVD? As noted above I plan to use DVDSP 3 to create the DVD, and I do notice the 16:9 settings in there for each track. I was planning to use the 16:9 Letterbox track setting. Is this correct?
Any other pitfalls I should be aware of as I navigate the 16:9 jungle?
    Thanks in advance.

First, with regard to your chipset - graphics/video card:
Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset, featuring the Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 450...
Your graphics card has no video RAM (VRAM) of its own.  So, it must use some of your system RAM to be able to function. This is 'dynamically allocated'. That is, your system decides how much system RAM to allocate to the graphics card. I am not aware of anyway to manually control this.
Next, you said you have installed Windows XP. Toshiba India has not posted any XP drivers for your system. Toshiba laptops are very finicky about using Toshiba 'tweaked' hardware drivers to be able to function properly. This computer is a Toshiba European version of your model, and it would appear to have a full set of XP drivers, these will work just fine in your system:
    Satellite Pro C650 PSC11E Downloads
The order you load the hardware drivers and Toshiba utilities is critical. The files available for download above are all zip files, so you will have to extract the .exe files to be able to install them. Install the drivers first, then the Toshiba utilities, and given that you already have XP basically working install in this order:
    1st Drivers:
    1) Chipset
    2) Storage Manager
    3) Display
    4) Sound
    5) then all other XP hardware drivers
    2nd Utilities:
    1) Common modules
    2) Hotkey utility
    3) all other XP Toshiba utilities.
    Good luck.

  • Best setting for a big screen projection?

    Hey,
I'm working on a project that is supposed to be screened on a big screen (I assume something like a small movie theater screen) and I was wondering - what would be the best settings when exporting for something like that? If I compressed it with h.264 but still kept it HD 1440x1080 would that be good enough for a big screen projection or would it be too compressed? I am working in Apple ProRes, the video is about 4 minutes long and when I export it with current settings - it comes out to be about 5.5GB (most of the footage I used was old archived videos though) and I'm trying to get it down to about 2GB so I can send it over the internet.
Anyone out there ever exported a movie for a movie theater before?

    David Harbsmeier wrote:
a data dvd as well just to be safe
How do you know that the playback system will have the codec needed to play your file?
Anyone by any chance know of a free software that can split the 5.5GB across multiple data dvds?
Why not use a dual-layer DVD?
David's suggestion makes sense, but if you really want to know...
You can break up large files into smaller segments using the Terminal command "Split".
In the following example, we will break a short (imaginary) movie, "MyFilm.mov" into 5MB pieces, in this form it could be sent piece by piece via email, without blocking the recipients mailbox for everything else.
Place the file to be split onto the desktop (this keeps it simple, otherwise you will have to "cd" to the directory where your movie resides)
    Open Terminal and...
TYPE: *cd desktop* and press return
TYPE: *split -b 5000k MyFilm.mov* and press return
This will produce a number of files on your desktop named xaa, xab, xac and so on. There is a way to retain the original name or rename the file to something else but I don't have documentation on this at hand.
The "5000k" part of the command is the size of the individual split files (in this case, the file will be broken into pieces of approx. 5MB each
Depending on the files total size you might want to break it into say, 50MB pieces - substitute "50m" for "5000k" in this case. This also saves you from having to type all those zeros!
These days, you are more likely have a movie several Gigabytes in size - as an example, the DV format uses 13GB of disk space for an hour of video. Prepare those files for burning to multiple CDs by typing "650m" after the split -b command.
This may take some time to process, depending on the size of the resulting files, how much RAM you have and the speed of your Mac.
At some point, your emailed or archived files will need to be re-assembled into a viewable movie. So....
Rejoin a set of split files:
Place all the files "xaa", "xab" etc, that are to be rejoined, onto the desktop
    (keep it simple, remember...)
    In Terminal;
TYPE: *cd desktop* and press return
Type *cat x* > MyFilm.mov* and press return. Again, this may take some time, depending on the size of the resulting files.

  • What PPI should I use when exporting for a video project?

I shoot RAW photos.  I like and use Premier Elements 11 to make video.  Frequently I insert photos in the videos and enjoy using the Pan and Zoom technique (frequently credited to Ken Burns).
Resizing photos helps Premier Elements to run smoothly.  The LR Export command makes it easy.  Using PSD files works well in Premier Elements.  However, I am confused about settings.
My understanding is that if no Pan&Zoom or cropping is to be done in the video the export should be 1920x1080.  If Pan&Zoom is planned, the setting should be higher by about 50%.  LR makes it simple by letting you specify the "Long Edge" so the setting would be 2880.   The short edge will match the original.
What about "Pixels Per Inch" for a HD 1920x1080 video project that may be played on a big HD TV or smaller YouTube?  There is plenty of information about PPI for printing and computer monitors, but not HD Video.
Here is screen capture for reference:
What should the pixels per inch be set at to match 1920x1080 video?  The 140 setting is a complete guess!
    Thanks in advance!

The above sentence from your first post is the correct answer with a few changes as to what settings you need to use in LR's Export module.
Anytime you "resize" an image it will lose sharpness unless you apply Output Sharpening. I have no idea if Premier Elements applies sharpening, how much it applies, or how much using large raw images slows it down. The best suggestion is for YOU to resize the raw images and apply Output Sharpening that meets YOUR taste as to "crispness." That way Premier Elements will use the properly sized TIFF or JPEG images (no PNG Export in LR) with no further modifications.
    For 1080p (1920 x 1080) Videos:
Don't use the 'Long Edge' option in LR's Export module since you want both portrait and Landscape images to have the same height. Instead simply enter W: 1920, H: 1080, and Resolution as mentioned doesn't matter. For the Output Sharpening LR's Screen Standard setting should work fine, but review the resized images at 1:1 and adjust to your taste. LR's Develop module Sharpening settings should NOT be used for this purpose. This is for the initial "capture" sharpening only.
As you mentioned when using Zoom & Pan you will want to increase the file size proportional to the actual Zoom setting you are using inside Premier Elements:
    150% = 2880 x 1620
    200% = 3840 x 2160
    300% = 5760 x 3240
For best results I'd limit your Zoom to 150%, especially if you’re having performance issues. You also don't want to make your image larger than its native camera raw resolution, which will reduce the sharpness. For higher Zoom settings simply Export the images full-size without using ‘Image Sizing’ or ‘Output Sharpening.’ Use 'File Settings' JPEG, sRGB, with 80 Quality setting, which will provide good results.

  • Output for large video projection

I have shot video at 1080i50, ingested with AIC, editing in FCE 4.0.1 at sequence settings 1920x1080i, PAL. The sequence is desaturated (black and white movie) has NO audio and is about 10 minutes. Now I want to export this sequence to show it as a  continuous video projection of about 4 meters wide, using a projector.
    My questions:
    - What media can I use: DVD? BluRay? Or should I use a notebook or iPad? Of course I want a high-res projection - though not higher than the eye can see.
    - What export setting should I use working with those media/ devices?
I searched the forum but could not find an exact answer. However, if I missed a thread a link to it would be very usefull.

  • Cannot import an iMovie HD project into FCE

    Hi,
I've been trying to import an iMovie HD (iMovie 6.0.4) project into FCE and all I get is an error:-
I've also tried to import the same project file into iMovie '09 but nothing is imported.
    Any suggestions, please?
    Thanks,
    TonyT

    Hi
    NO - Not really !
iMovie 1 to HD6 - is one program and it's evolution.
iMovie'08 to '13 - is something completly different - NO code is used from previous iMovie !
So really No other program - iMovie'08 - '13 or FinalCut Express, Pro or Pro-X or Adobe Premiere etc can import a project so that all work (transitions. texts etc) still remain in an editable form.
    What You can do is
    • Finalize project in iM HD6 - or -
    • Export out as a movie - QT.mov and use this as a template in FinalCut etc and re-build - (doesn't work in iMovie'08 - '13 as it only holds one Video track).

  • How to get photos show up in a video project?

Hi! I'm trying to import photos from a Canon Powershot SX210 IS into a movie project. I first imported the photos into iPhoto library and photos show up in the project, then I drag and drop then into the project timeline but once I play the video project it only shows black instead of the videos. What do I have to do? Do the photos have to be in certain file format / certain size? Now the photos are raw 14 megapixel monsters. Thanks for help!

I have the same problem and it's not just when I input photos but even when I add a transition at the beginning of the show.

  • How to create a DVD with multiple video projects

I want to burn a DVD with several short video projects so that it will run without stopping in between.

    Hi
*Play all resp one chapter at a time*
    Play All Button
    1. There are NO - Play All - button in any version of iDVD
    2. It can be faked in several ways
    • Easies and most fault proof way is to make a doublet movie containing All and with
Chapters set to match. It will take up x2 space but is easy to understand and produce.
    • It's said that one can put all movies into a Photo/SlideShow and this will also
give the function of a Play All button - Never tested though.
    • Using another program to do this eg. Roxio Toast™ where there ia a Play All button option.
    Mike Evangelist1
You might be able to get close to what you want by using a slideshow in iDVD. (It's not widely known, but you can put videos in a slideshow.) If you set the slide duration to manual, playback will pause after each movie/slide, and you can continue with the 'next' button.

  • How do I save my video project as a data file?

I am preparing a video project on a deadline and they have requested I send it to them in a data file format. I don't see where I can save it that way. Help!

    mickeyb
If you transfer the computer hard drive saved project file to a USB flash drive or to burned to disc as data disc with 3rd party software, the project file will be of little use without its source media and Premiere Elements version that supports it. If your associates are asking for a project file, then consider archiving the project, using Premiere Elements Editor with File Menu/Project Archiver and the Copy Project option. That will save copy of project file plus copies of source media in a Copied Folder to the computer hard drive. This Folder can then be transferred to a USB Flash Drive. The recipient still needs Premiere Elements to open the copy of the project file from the Copied Folder on the USB Flash Drive inserted into the recipient's computer. If a Movie Menu is included with the project, then the following needs to be considered
ATR Premiere Elements Troubleshooting: PE12: Archiving Projects With Disc Menus
Is the request for project as data file related to your associates wanting
    a. to edit the project
    or
    b. see what the project looks like in its most current version?
If "b", you might want to think about exporting the Timeline to a AVCHD.mp4 files and saving it as .mp4 data to the computer hard drive or USB Flash Drive. Premiere Elements does not support menus for Timeline content saved to file.
Please review and consider and then we can discuss this further.
    Thank you.

Ripple Training produce some excellent tutorials on CD.
However, they also give away over 50 video tutorials for FCE/FCP.
Many of them are for FCP BUT (most) also apply to FCE.
They deal with each topic in a short and punchy style. I found them easy to follow and learned some useful quick tips.
They are QT movies which can be downloaded so that you can use them whenever you want. (Allow about an hour to download them all - you have to do them one at a time). I found it quicker to download all of them (except for a few dealing with multi-camera work etc.) rather than viewing them on the website to sort them out.

Hope you find them as useful as I did.

Just a couple of additional points for newcomers:-
    1. The estimation of an hour (or so) to download them all refers to Broadband (ADSL). Normal "Snailmail" internet will take around 10 hours!
    2. To download each lesson choose File>Save Page As. A window will appear saying it will be saved as a QuickTime Movie on the Desktop. Click Save.

Same thing for a movie file.. If you want to play back the movie via a DVD and a DVD player you must create a Movie DVD  and not just burn files to a data DVD... as Data DVDs are just storage devices for files and therefore will only work with computers...
Movie DVDs are special formats that include things like menus and special file formats.. so they can playback via a DVD Player...
You will need a 3rd party DVD Burning app like Toast which is what i actually use.... or the more popular DVD Creator app...to create and then burn a Movie DVD that will playback on a DVD Player....
