Bizarre Slowdown Unless Probe Window has Focus

I'm having a strange problem when reading data from a file into memory using LabVIEW's "Read from SGL file" VI and a bunch of array operations (Initialise, Replace Subset).  The read operation is run many thousands of times, as it resides inside two nested For Loops.
Without any outside intervention, the process takes quite a while to complete (a few minutes), although when all the data's been read it doesn't take up that much memory.  However, while I had some probe windows open on a completely different part of the program, I noticed that the speed became inexplicably much faster while the probe window was being moved.  In fact, it happens when I click and hold the mouse button on the border of the probe window, I don't have to move it at all.  The probe window doesn't have to be probing a point in a currently running SubVI.
Left to its own devices, the process takes about 10 minutes, during which time it uses about 3% of the processor time.  With a probe window focussed, it completes the process in about 20 seconds and uses about 50% CPU.  Fiddling with the process priority for LabVIEW.exe seems to have no effect.
LabVIEW 7.1, WinXP SP1 running on a 3GHz Hyperthreading P4 with 512MB RAM.
Any ideas?

Hello Ian,
This is definitely strange. Would it be possible to post your code on the forum, (and the file your reading from if its not too big or sensitive information), then we'll take a look at it and see if we can reproduce this behaviour.
If you dont want to post the code on the forum, then we'll arrange a different method.

  • Jerky video when window has focus

I am new to the Mac world and everything is good except for jerky video playback.
When watching video I find that if the window playing the video has focus then the video is jerky but if another window has focus the video playback in the window with the video is smooth. This is certainly the case for watching Youtube (safari or firefox) and iTunes video clips.
    Do others have this problem

I tried what you are describing and observed no fuzziness of the video. I had two applications open at the time and switched from one to the other. It just might be the video.

  • How to determine which Windows application has focus

I'm new to JAVA and new to programming. I hope someone will help me out. I'm trying to write a simple JLink program (JLink is a JAVA API for Pro|Engineer, a CAD design program). In part of this program I need to determine if Pro|E has focus. Is there some way to use JAVA to determine which actively running Windows application has focus?
I basically want my program to pause when focus changes to another program. For example: While Pro|E is active and has focus the program runs, when I select an Excel window, or Outlook, or Notepad or any other window my program will pause until focus is returned. I just need to determine which window within Windows has focus.
I hope I have explained this properly. I searched the internet for an answer but found nothing. I did come across some references to JNI, but I'm not sure what that is or how to use it.
    Thank you!

I just need to determine which window within Windows has focus. No, you don't. All you need to determine is whether your application has the focus. If it doesn't, then some other application does, but it's really irrelevant which one does. All that's relevant is that your application doesn't have the focus and hence it should pause.

  • How to determine which application has focus in Windows

    Hello all-
I'm trying to work around the "Labview freezes when there is large data on the clipboard known issue" (http://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW/Labview-freeze-when-accessing-a-custom-menu-with-data-on-the/m-p/200...) and one thought is to try to determine if Labview has focus, and if it does then clear the clipboard.  If Labview doesn't have focus, then let the user use the clipboard.  This would be a good work-around because it would let the users paste screen shots and such into notes files and wouldn't risk a nasty clipboard/ menu/ freeze-crash.
My initial search for determining windows application focus, came up empty though.  This old thread (from 2005) pretty much covers it:
    http://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW/Is-there-a-simple-way-to-programatically-tell-which-VI-window/m-p/20...
The "Is Frontmost' property does not do it.  I need to determine if Labview has focus, as opposed to Windows, notepad, firefox, etc.  I also reviewed the commad prompt commands and didn't find anything immediately helpful there either.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Casey
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Christian-
That's perfect!  By using GetForegroundWindow, GetWindowTextA and GetWindowFileNameA in user32.dll I can detect which window has focus.  If Labview has focus then I programatically clear the clipboard so the user can still use it when not clicking on Labview windowns, but also we do not risk a freeze and crash because of the clipboard/ freeze bug.
I briefly thought about using the .NET versions of these functions, but because that would have forced an upgrade to at least .NET framework 3.0 for all of my user computers, I decided on the unmanaged user32.dll.
Thanks for the suggestion.  I think I'm pretty close to a work around here that should last me until they fix the clipboard/ freeze bug.
    Thanks,
    Casey

  • Question-How to fix Robohelp8 window keeps focus when it shouldn't?

I converted a robohelp 8 for word project to robohelp 8 for HTML this year.  The software GUI it is part of is created with PowerBuilder 12.1.  The HTML help works fine in the application, except that once the help window is opened, only that window has focus. If you navigate to another GUI window and keep the help opened, it remains in the back which is correct.  If you navigate back to the original GUI window, the help window is "stuck" on top where it originally was, when it should be in the background.  The old robohelp for word doesn't have this problem.  I have checked all the window properties settings, and all are basic default values.  I do have the "remember size and position" option turned on, so that you can move the help window out of the way of the GUI, and then it works fine.  But my developers want the focus issue to be fixed.  It occurs both in XP and  Windows 7.  Is this something I can fix in robohelp?  Or is it a PowerBuilder issue?
I have another help project created with robohelp 8 html with same window properties & that one does not have this problem.  That GUI is created with Visual Studio 2008.
    Thank you very much!!
    Judy

    Hi Judy
Likely you need to ask your developers to examine the calls for the application where things work as expected. My guess is that they will find there is a change they need to make in the way they call the help. There really isn't much in RoboHelp that influences this behavior. You can look at the extended properties for the window, but I'm doubtful you will find that anything has been set that would cause it.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Outlook 2011 on macbook pro won't get mail unless it has focus

I have Microsoft Office 2013 on my Macbook Pro 15" retina. Outlook works fine for email when outlook has focus. If outlook is in the background, for example when I have Safari open as I do typing this question, Outlook cannot make a connection to my ISP and get mail. It displays a popup window for each mail account asking me if I want to try giving it the password again. If I say No to each popup and leave Outlook on top with focus, it immediately reconnects to the ISP and resynchronises all mailboxes, it just won't keep synchronised when it is in the background.
Anyone know a solution to this? It was the same under Maverick and is the same now under Yosemite.

I should add that I don't know if the Java download is responsible - could just be a coincidence that it was the last thing I did/downloaded before restarting.

  • Problems with titler window losing focus

I'm using PP2.0, running on windows XP x64. It's been running since it was last re-installed in December 2007 (after a problem with codecs that broke PP2), and I've made no changes to it or to any of the support processes it uses, nor any changes to the OS (apart from service packs). There have been NO driver changes, window layout changes, workspace changes, or any other changes (apart from entropy). The mouse I'm using is a [oxymoron]Kensington Expert Mouse Pro[/oxymoron], with their latest (i.e. 2007) drivers, and XMouse ver 1.37.0.0 (i.e. their latest x64 driver), but this happens regardless of the mouse or keyboard I use.
To set the scene... I use a "standard" title template for all my video work, with predefined text fields and colours and so on. There's nothing bizarre or extraordinary about these templates, they're actually super simplistic in terms of what most users here use their titlers for! The entire title is completely static - there are no scrolling or moving anythings, the title is overlaid on black video, there are just a dozen simple text boxes and one standard logo (bmp format), that's it. I use only Arial fonts, with no special settings or kerning or spacing or anything more complex than colour. I haven't touched or modified the original titler template since I set it up in December 2008. The problem I'm seeing happens to any titles, not just the known working template, so it's definitely a PP2 problem, not a titler problem.
The problem is that recently (in the past 3-4 months, over maybe 5 projects in that time) the titler window loses focus while I'm using it, and the PP2 main application becomes active.
When I bring the titler window up (using any method) and start editing, that window loses focus (window frame reverts to the background windowframe colour) and I can't type or do anything else in the titler window. The PP2 app window suddenly become the active window, and remains active until I shut down the titler.
My workaround is to click and hold in the titler window, on or around the text I want to edit. So by pressing and holding the left mouse button, I can insert text just fine in any existing text frame. And by selecting text with the left button and then holding it (like I'm starting a drag operation), I can _replace_ the selected text - but as soon as I release the mouse button, the focus leaves the titler and I can't do anything again.
I've reset the workspace, changed mouse and keyboards, but the problem isn't a hardware or driver issue. PP2 is the only application that behaves like this, and it's the only Adobe application that behaves like this - Photoshop (5.5 and CS8) and Audition (1.5 and 3.0) all work perfectly normally.
This behaviour occurs with titles I've used and saved in previous working projects, it happens with new blank titles, and so on.
What I've noticed most recently while trying to fix the problem, is that sometimes I can actually type a couple of letters or hit an editing key or two in the titler window normally, but then the titler loses focus and keeps it lost permanently after that. That doesn't always happen, and it doesn't appear to be related to process flow. So restarting PP2, or closing and reloading a project, don't affect the arbitrary nature of the "sometimes starts to work" behaviour. I can sometimes re-edit a title in the same project after editing the title with the focus lost, and suddenly the first few keystrokes are normal, but then the focus reverts to the main app.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions to try (apart from reinstalling the application again or upgrading), I'd be most grateful.
    -PCPete

I think you're right, it's starting to look like another problem within the "new" PP2 installation. It's such a complex app, it's not surprising it gets lost.
Since this is the only app that has this problem (and because of the nature of the problem), I know it's not a graphics card or driver issue.
This appears to be a high-level windows function problem, to do with the way the PP2 app is handling the modal form. It's probably not the mouse driver, since I don't move the mouse outside of the child window, but that doesn't leave much else. I don't have popups or any other asynchronous applications (like email warning windows or balloon-type reminders or notifications) either.
I really don't want to go through the horror of yet another reinstall of an Adobe product if I can possibly avoid it, but pending no other useful ideas, that is an absolute last resort.

  • I bought a new laptop with Windows 7. My computer name in Windows has changed, and now, my Ipad can't find Itunes

I bought a new laptop with Windows 7. My computer name in Windows has changed, and now, my Ipad can't find Itunes, and Itunes can't find my Ipad. [email protected]

Ok, if reinstalling iTunes as suggested above does not resolve the issue of iTunes recognising the iPad then try this -
Firstly, make sure that your device is not hidden (left hand pane). If it just reads device then toggle between SHOW and HIDE.
Secondly, try all the other ports on your computer, even a number of times.
Thirdly, make sure your lead /connections are no faulty.
Fourthly, if you have another computer try plugging your device into it without taking any action, give it a moment, remove it and try it back in your other computer again.
Failing all that, see here - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
And failing all that put the device into Recovery mode. See here and note the paragraph 'If you restore from a different computer.... ' down near the bottom of the page -
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/assistant/itunes/
As for making your new laptop your 'home computer' follow these instructions -
    1. Without connecting your iPad to your computer -
    A) Install iTunes / make sure the latest version of iTunes is installed.
    B) Go to the Store tab and click on "Authorise This Computer".
    C) Go to Edit, click on Preferences [iTunes and Preferences on Macs] and click on Devices. Put a check mark in the box next to "Prevent  iPods/iPhones/iPads from syncing automatically". Click OK and close iTunes.
    2.  Connect your iPad to your computer -
    A) Start iTunes (it will not start automatically because of the action at 1(C) above).
    B) Right click on your iPad under Devices in the left column. Select "Transfer purchases".
    C) When the transfer has completed, right click on your iPad again and select "Backup".
    D) When the backup has completed, left click on your iPad, click on the Apps tab, and put a check mark in the box next to "Sync Apps", and then click on "Apply" (bottom right).
    E) Unless you want to always do a manual sync (as I do), go back to Edit, Preferences [iTunes and Preferences on Macs] and uncheck the box next to "Prevent your iPod.....".
    F) Finally, on your iPad, check that everything is syncing properly. If not, go back to iTunes and check all settings.
NB You should not lose any apps. However, any 'purchased' missing apps can be downloaded again FOC. As with updates, this must be done with the Apple ID under which they were originally 'purchased'.

  • Itunes keeps closing as soon as i open it and states 'windows has detected a problem' HELP!!!!

Help!! Itunes keeps closing straight away and message states 'windows has detected a problem' HELP ASAP PLEASE!!!!

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If you've already tried a complete uninstall and reinstall try opening iTunes in safe mode (hold down CTRL+SHIFT as you start iTunes) then going to Edit > Preferences > Store and turning off Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases. You may find iTunes will now start normally.

  • I get an error message when trying to install windows 7 on my macbook pro. The message says "windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer. I don't have anything connected to my computer. How do I fix this?

I'm trying to install windows 7 on my macbook pro. I went through the process of bootcamp telling it to install windows 7. Once the windows boot manager started an error message came up. The error message says " windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer. I don't have a usb connected to my computer. I  am using windows 7 professional install disc. I  can't figure out what i am doing wrong. The same message keeps coming up over and over. Am I doing something wrong or is it something else?

Well, shucks, i just spent almost 30 minutes trying to find your model user guide to explain it better, I guess they never got around to making it.....
I would just borrow another Windows disk and try installing it again and if it does it again then you might take it to an Apple Store and see if one of the "Genius' " can figure it out.
Make sure your internet is enabled and click on your blank desktop and at the top of your screen is a Help menu option, enter PRAM and it should give you a list of things relating to Pram. It may take a few seconds to list anything as it has to connect to Apples severs first. It should list the things you may have to fill back in when your done.
"P-ram" stores some common information that is used in the background, your date, time, startup disk, etc, that you don't have to re-fill when you restart, it's a little different for each computer.

  • Just purchased and installed photoshop and everytime i try to open it it says "windows has encountered a problem and must close the program" anyone else have this problem?

I have just purchased the photography package on my windows 8 computer and everytime I open photoshop an error message pops up saying that windows has encountered a problem and needs to close the program. I am really frustrated that this is happening after I purchased this plan and would like to be able to use the product I have purchased

    +1 to Chris' assessment.
Keep in mind that it's your responsibility to provide a problem-free working environment on your computer for Photoshop, and system software (such as display drivers) can have problems.
Look in your Windows Event Logs (specifically, your Application Log) for the info requested above on the specific crashes.
