Blank screen on quitting awesome

I run Arch 32-bit on my old computer running on a P4 processor. Awesome works fine but when I quit it, I don't see anything - it's just blank. But, I'm sure it goes back to the tty from which it was launched as I'm able to run commands (like halt or xinit). So it looks like it's just the display that is not working. Why is this happening and what can I do about it?

I managed to dig up more info about frame buffer and this is what I found:
My WM runs at 1280x1024 resolution. So I added vga=0x0324 (1280x1024 32bit) to menu.lst. Now when I quit X, I can see the text but it has been displaced to the right i.e.
bcabcabcabcabcabc [rms@unity ~]$ abcabcabcabcabcabcabcabcabcabcabcabcabcabcabcabcabcabcabcabcabcabca
I changed it to vga=0x031b. This time, The text is not legible at all and is repeat four times across the screen. I tried couple of other modes but they are, too, illegible.
Here are the available modes:

  • Mail Blank Screen, Then Quits

Help!  I attempted to send an email that apparently was too large (pics). Now, every time I go into the mail app, the screen is blank, and after a few seconds, returns to my home screen.  I've done the soft & hard reboot many times.  I've also deleted and recreated the email accounts.  I have 2 email accounts on my iPad & I even deleted the one I was not using at the time I tried to send the large email.
Short of a full factory reset, any other suggestions? Greatly appreciated!

Thanks Brian, for your quick response. I've tried the hard re-boot (Power + Home Button) a few times, with no luck fixing the blank screen. I deleted all email accounts, tried the hard reboot, then re-added my aol email account. Interestingly, after this, my mail icon correctly shows that I have 2 new emails (so my iPad is "seeing" my aol email account). But I still get a mail blank screen when I open the iPad mail app, and it still quits after a few seconds.

  • My mail app quits a few seconds after launching. I get a blank screen and then it goes back to the starter screen

THe mail app on my ipad 2 quits right after launching. This happened as I was forwarding an email with a long attachment. Now I get a blank screen with just the icons, no mail mailboxes etc. after a few seconds that blank screen disappears and we go back to the starter screen. I tried rebooting, relaunching but no luck so far. Can somebody help me? Thanks
    Hans V

Have you tried removing the email account from the app through settings?  I would try removing it, rebooting, opening the email app to see if it still crashes,  & then adding it back your email account.
If you're leary about causing more issues while you're not home, you could always try using a third party mail app (there are many), accessing your email through it...not a fix for your problem but a way to deal with the situation until you can get it worked out.
Resetting all settings on the iPad (not deleting content) is a good way to clear many errors as it can remove leftover cache files & files that have become corrupt.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.  Good luck & let us know if you get it working.

The secret to fixing xorg.conf problems is searching for
    (EE)
in your xorg log.  Once you find those, you're more than half way to fixing the errors!  There are 2 sets of errors in your log:
(EE) Failed to load module "type1" (module does not exist, 0)
    and
    (EE) fglrx(0): === [swlDalHelperAddCustomizeMode] === CWDDEDI_DisplayGetSetModeTimingOverride failed: 7
    (EE) fglrx(0): === [swlDalHelperAddCustomizeMode] === CWDDEDI_DisplayGetSetModeTimingOverride failed: 7
    (EE) fglrx(0): === [swlDalHelperAddCustomizeMode] === CWDDEDI_DisplayGetSetModeTimingOverride failed: 7
This wiki page should be helpful with both errors:  http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg.

  • My iMovie 10.0.1 has quit working. When you open it up, it just shows a blank screen, all my events and projects are now gone!

    Hi everyone,
I have been using imovie a lot on my macbook and never had any problems. Last night however I deleted two events in my library. Then restarted my macbook as sometimes after working on it for a while it gets slow. So anyway when I opened it up again it just hung on a blank screen with nothing happening. It didnt bring up the usual screen panels for importing, or editing, or any of the normal stuff.
My husband deleted the application and then reinstalled it. Same thing happening!! Any advice??

Another easy way to fix this.
What I've noticed is that upon upgrading your projects and events to work with iMovie 10, initially it will work... Until you quit iMovie and reopen it again. Any events with hashtags will show up without the star next to the iMovie event. SO, if you happen to read this, after upgrading to iMovie 10 from its predecessor, immediately change the event name to NOT include a hashtag/pound symbol.
Otherwise, if it's too late, you can either do the above or this...
Hold down option and click on iMovie. This will prompt you Locate, Create a New Library, Cancel this window, or Choose a different library. What you want to do is create a new library, call it whatever you want to, this will only be temporary. After the program opens, it should be a blank Library. Then go to File > Open Library > iMovie Library (your original library) and proceed to change the name of your events. Quit the program. Go into your Movies folder in Finder, delete the library you temporarily created, and your back in business.

  • I can't download apps! Every time I try, it asks me to chose a security question and I try, but I just comes up with a blank screen and I can't choose a question. If I click no, I don't want to put security questions, it doesn't install the app. HELP!

I can't do it! I am willing to add questions but I can't because it just shows me a blank screen. I even tried rebooting my entire iPad2 and that didn't work. I know it is not a certain app because I tried multiple ones.... HELP!

Hi all! I have found the answer in another forum and this has 100% worked for me!!!
    1) Quit App Store in multi-tasking.
•From the Home screen, click the Home button twice.
•Tap and hold on the app.
    •When it starts to jiggle, tap the red  ⛔ in the top corner to close it;
***Please close all open apps on your phone***
    2) Tap Settings.
    3) Tap Safari.
    4) Tap Clear History.
    5) Tap the Clear History button.
    6) Tap Clear Cookies and Data.
    7) Tap the Clear Cookies and Data button
    See the answer in context
I hope this helps a lot of people!! Spread the word (seeing as apple doesn't seem to want to/care!)

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Quit and relaunch Mail, and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Blank screen after poweroff

First of all, sorry for my language. I'm french (I've posted my problem on the french forum here but it hasn't been solved yet.
    THE PROBLEM :
When I shutdown my desktop computer using any command ('shutdown -h now' 'halt' of using the syslinux poweroff, and even when I try to suspend with 'pm-suspend'), I have a blank screen when I try to turn the PC on. And then the screen says "no signal". Even the BIOS doesn't appear.
I have to use the RESET button of my tower to see the BIOS appear
First I didn't have the problem with the command 'reboot', but it's the same now (since I changed my CMOS battery).
And since that I have also to RESET several times to get the BIOS.
    MY CONFIG :
    - kernel : 3.14.2-1-ARCH
    - openbox + slim
    - bootloader syslinux
    - graphic card : NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS + current Nvidia driver (my card is not recognized by 'nouveau')
    - motherboard : ASUSTeK P5PL2-E
    - BIOS version : 0904 (up to date stable version)
    - CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU E2180 @ 2.00GHz
    - Screen : ACER G246HL (DVI connected)
WHAT I'VE TRIED SO FAR :
    - unplug the computer, wait, plug it.
    - reinstall the packages : nvidia nvidia-utils nvidia-libgl xorg-server xorg-xinit xorg-server-utils
    - boot on the arch's liveUSB and shutdown from there >> same problem
    - boot with the kernel options 'noacpi noapic nolapic'
    - desactivate the QuickBoot option on the BIOS (it seemed to work but finally not)
    - use the LTS kernel
    - open the computer and clean everything inside, check that everything is OK, even change the CMOS battery
    - run memetest86+ >> no error
    - check the CPU temperature
    WHAT I FOUND (quite similar):

    Please help :'(

  • Blank Screen after fingerprint swipe

My start-up procedure is fine, until I read "swipe your finger" and do so. Then my screen goes blank, except for the cursor and "The Shield Deluxe" in small print at the top of my screen (that's the virus checker I use).
I struggled with this for hours, switching on and off and going through the start-up procedure. Always the blank screen. At one stage I moved the computer and suddenly had a full desktop screen, as normal. Clearly everything is chugging away there, just not displaying, because I had a message saying Windows updates had taken place and I needed to restart the computer. I did so and, guess what, blank screen again. And ever since.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I'm not sure I have that capability. I'm not a technical person. I buy a computer to use, not to fiddle with.
Also, is there a good reason we are suspecting the virus checker? I have been using it quite successfully, and I also have the same one on my two other computers. Is it because I said the only thing I can see on the screen is the name of the virus checker? Since I installed it, it has been quite normal for me to see that on the black screen during startup procedures.
If you really think that is the problem, I will try to remove it, but of course that would leave me without a virus checker and vulnerable to other problems.
    Thanks for your efforts.

  • Blank screen after update to 10.3.1

I have a Z10 which has a totally blank screen now.... not quite sure what is going on as the backlight works, but nothing is coming up on the screen.
I have connected it to Link and even tried downgrading the software... but still nothing... I got an autoloader of 10.3.1 and everything seems to upload fine Link just says that it is in setup mode and to finish that on the device...
I would love to... but the screen is totally blank.  I took the cover off to check the screen connections..... that seems to be fine....
I am at a loss..... any thoughts?

An update on this one... I guess I have the same problem as the Z30's... I was EXTREMELY impressed by Blackberry and Rogers for a very brief moment when they gave me a code for a swap out at a store... so I went to the store and they couldn't figure out what to do so I had to call back Rogers... all in I am 6 hours into the phones with Rogers.
I guess they are just directing everyone to BB for this issue even though none of us can use our phones.  I am told that because I am out of warranty (a one year warranty) that I am up a creek....
Interesting as this update was pushed to our phones and that caused the issue... not anything that I did at all.
For shame Blackberry... I am giving one more chance for something good to happen... this is my.... oh goodness.... 8th Blackberry?  Loyal since the trackball =)  Perhaps its time to end this relationship...
Step up and fix this issue PLEASE!!!!!

  • Blank screen after bios update

    Hi everybody!
My friend asked me to take a look at her computer. It was quite old HP pavilion 6525en. Before reinstalling windows I checked that she got first version of bios and decided to upgrade it. Sadly, after reboot I found myself in deep problem. There was a blank screen. I decided to look around in internet and found that its a common problem. (have updated lots of bios, but never happened stuff like that). So I found couple articles about Phoenix crisis recovery and decided to try that. Should I know something before I dive in? I know that I need thumb drive or usb floppy and how to enter CRM (crisis recovery mode), but all these sounds scares me a bit. How long does beeping takes after thumb drive stops flashing? Can it overheat, coz I found that fan won't slow down? can anything burn during this? (I know, lots of questions, but I'm cautious, coz I just wanted to do a good job for my friend and now it seems that I might have to get her a new computer )  p/n: GT391EA#ABB. Any help would be appreciated.

There is no harm in trying crisis recovery, the recovery should take 2-5 minutes, you should get some sort of signal or sign when it is done, most systems will automatically restart when done.
I don't know of any reason it would overheat during crisis recovery.

  • Windows xp pro stalls - blank screen- hardware or software problem?

    Hi Guys,
My system is about one month old and has been awesome in performance and graphics.
Suddenly it (windows xp pro) stalls after flashing the windows loading screen and it goes blank. Looks like a software problem?
I am posting on this forum because when I check cmos, no hard drives are registered.
I can't get into safe mode, can't get past the administrator/user screen because no mouse operates here and can't select icons with the keyboard.(No admin passwords were set up anyway)
Booting from CD, repair console doesn't work because it can't find any hard drive.
Reluctant to do a complete reinstall because of precious stuff on the hard drive.
Using f8, "last known good..." just gives the same blank screen.
Using floppy boot, no other drives are recognized.
If my root directory has been wiped out by a virus or something, how come it gets past post and starts to load windows? If it's merely the graphics driver or similar not loading, how come the cmos shows no hard drive?
Is this a hardware or software problem? Any help much appreciated.

    THE ANSWER !!
    Hi Guys,
I finally got to talk to the guy who set up this system and he said that it is normal for RAID drives not to show on BIOS/CMOS. 'Think of it like a vrtual drive' he said. When the black and white initialization screen shows something like: 'Nividia Stripe-healthy'...then THAT is the hard-drive.
He said that as long as Windows was getting to the loading screen, that means that the computer itself was functioning okay, so don't worry about BIOS, the problem is a file corruption in windows, or virus etc.
Also he said that when trying to use recovery console or reinstall windows, because the system can only read the RAID drives through a SCSI interface, you have to load the Nvidia SCSI drivers from floppy by pressing f6 when asked to at the bottom of the pale blue screen (from Windows cd boot), before trying to do anything with windows (or windows will just tell you it can't read the drives, as it did before with me.)
So in the end, I reinstalled windows by that method and everyting seems fine so far. YAY!
Thanks you people for being kind enough to help someone out. I really appreciate it.

  • HT201263 iPhone 5 crashed (blank screen recovery mode) the first time a week ago and did it twice today. What can I do to repair/prevent this?

my iPhone 5 has worked well until it started shutting itself off and rebooting some time ago. I did not think much of it as id heard of this issue with iOS 7.  a week ago (9/6/14) the phone just stopped working.  blank screen with no response from home or lock buttons.  Tried plugging it in to charge, still nothing.  When I connected to my computer, iTunes said the phone was in recovery mode and I had to restore it.  Today, 9/13/14, it did this twice.  What is happening and how do I fox/prevent it?

    Hi jvinsonhaler,
If you are having issues with your iPhone going into recovery mode, you may want to try some things to troubleshoot.
First, quit all running applications and test again -
iOS: Force an app to close

Next, I would try restarting the iPhone -
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset

If the issue is still present, you may want to restore the iPhone as a new device -

  • No startup: blank screen, power light on, fans normal speed

iMac G5 2.0GHz, 2GB RAM, 160GB HD, OSX 10.5, 17". Bought in October of 2005. Two matched Samsung 1GB RAM chips installed quite some time ago with no problems.
While it isn't the iSight model, my iMac has done the blank screen with fast spinning fan thing a few times, but it always recovers after I turn it off. Here's what happened:
iTunes is playing, I pause it using the Play/Pause button on the new wireless aluminum keyboard, it sits for a while and the screensaver comes on. I press the Play/Pause button on the keyboard again, the screensaver freezes and the fans spin up to maximum speed. I hold the power button down, it shuts off, I turn it on again and get nothing. It now powers up to a blank screen, fans at normal speed, the power light stays on, and the CD drive never makes its little startup noise. Holding the power button down does nothing, I have to pull the power cable out to turn it off. The only thing it has done differently since this happened is one time the power light didn't come on, otherwise no change. I also tried all of the different key combinations on startup (using the USB keyboard) and get no response, so no target disc or safe modes. Also, the CD drive won't accept any discs, so I can't start from the system discs.
I don't want to pay for any expensive or major repair work since I was going to get a new iMac this Fall anyway. If anybody has any clever do-it-yourself tricks I'm wide open to them. Otherwise it looks like I'll just get a hard drive enclosure kit and get all of my stuff off that way.
    Help please!

First, you may still be eligible for one of Apple's Repair extension programs also, try resetting the SMU.
