BlazeDS (Turnkey) + ActiveMQ

So, after a lot of reading and experimenting, I was able to get my flex client subscribed to some ActiveMQ topics. The problem I first noticed, however, was the all of the message bodies on the flex side were null and the tomcat console for BlazeDS had the following error:

That kind of made sense to me, since I never copied any of the classes used by our java applications for BlazeDS, so I stuck the jar in the "tomcat/webapps/blazeds/WEB-INF/lib" folder (I even tried putting them in the "tomcat/webapps/blazeds/WEB-INF/classes" and "tomcat/lib" folders). The complete opposite of what I expected then happened - nothing worked at all. There was absolutely no recognition from the BlazeDS console that any messages were making it from the ActiveMQ topic. I'm completely failing to see how *not* having the JMS object classes works better than *having* them.
Since there is absolutely no documentation on using BlazeDS with ActiveMQ beyond just the configurations, I was curious if anyone has run in to this and found a fix?

Tomcat Manager Portal in BlazeDS Turnkey Server

Hi all,
Im pretty new to blazeds, and liking what i have experienced thus far. Could anyone please tell me how to access the Tomcat Manager Portal within the BlazeDS Turnkey Server Installation.
Like in know it runs on port 8400 by default. So running it then opening http://localhost:8400 gets me the blazeds turnkey home page with links to the sample apps.
However I want to get to the Tomcat Portal to change file access permissions etc. And if i wanted to deploy apps from there etc.
Is this possible?

Basically just add a user and role to the $CATALINA_HOME/conf/tomcat-users.xml:

Error: "Cannot access the web server" with BlazeDS Turnkey

Help! I'm new to Flex and BlazeDS and Eclipse. I was trying to setup a Flex Project using a BlazeDS/Tomcat server running from Eclipse on Windows XP per the example in flexbandit.com/archives/55#comment-269 and in (www.infoq.com/articles/blazeds-intro). I am NOT using the Eclipse Flex plug-in. I'm using Flex Builder for the Flex code.
Here's what I've done:
I installed BlazeDS and tested http://localhost:8400 - That worked.
I setup Tomcat in Eclipse. - That seemed to work.
I created a Dynamic Web Project in Eclipse - That seemed to work.
I created the bare-bones BlazeDS Configuration under the Eclipse project and then created a basic HelloWorld java class.
I added the destination in the “remoting-config.xml” file found in the c:/projects/workspace/ReportGenTool/WebContent/WEB-INF/flex” directory:

When I started the application server by clicking on the server's green play button in Eclipse and then tried to open localhost:8400/ReportGenTool, I got the 404 error : The requested source (/ReportGenTool/) is not available which according to the instructions is fine.
Next I created a Flex Project, but when I try to validate the new Flex project configuration, it gives me an error "Cannot access the web server. The server may not be running, or the web root folder or root URL may be invalid."
When I validated the server was running after setting up the BlazeDs Turnkey, I saw the BlazeDS page.
Now when I bring up http://localhost:8400 I get:

 Apache Tomcat/6.0.14
My eclipse project is named ReportGenTool and I've overwritten the WebContent directory with the META-INF and WEB-INF directories from the BlazeDS installation (C:\blazeds\tomcat\webapps\blazeds). According to Eclipse the server is running.
My Flex project is named ReportGenTool and is located in another directory away from the Eclipse project directory.
 My root folder is: C:\Projects\workspace\ReportGenTool\WebContent
 Root URL: is http://localhost:8400/ReportGenTool/
 Context root is: /ReportGenTool/
Any idea what might be wrong? What didn't I configure that needs to be configured?

This is not working because your router has a direct to your web server that is not through the outside interface which is needed for nat to occur, for this to work you need to setup a loopback interface as nat outside and policy route traffic to there for your server traffic
Bu if your server is internal why do you need nat at all? Can you not use bind with views that might be simpler

Blazeds, ds-consolo, and samples applications are working fine. I'm not using the Tomcat with Flex Builder. The ds-consolo and samples are
accessed through http://localhost:8080/ds-consolo and http://localhost:8080/samples. I did not change any of the configuration files
(service-config.xml, ...) in the distribution package.

If it is caused by a wrong port, I should get an error message or timeout.

Hi,
Can you mention the eclipse version you are using? And the platform in which you are trying to build?
I feel its always better to be platform specific when you go in for headless build. I can see that the configs value in your properties file is "configs=*,*,*". Try changing it to appropriate value and build your product. For example, I use "configs=win32, win32, x86" for building my product in 32-bit windows machine.

BlazeDS and ActiveMQ ?

Hi all,
     I read some things about ActiveMQ (version 5). I have been using Flex (version 3) and BlazeDS server and Java work together.
     Java client (publish) send messages to ActiveMQ server and after that this messages send to BlazeDS (from ActiveMQ) and flex client (subscribe) show them
     Also, I search at google to found the connection style beetween ActiveMQ, BlazeDS, Flex and Java. Especially, how configure ActiveMQ contact with BlazeDS ?
     Can show me some link and examples about this problem ?

I would configure your application server to have a short HTTP session timeout. The issue is that when the client application is shutdown without unsubscribing the Consumer the server still thinks the Consumer is alive and queues up messages to be delivered to it. This can be a problem if messages are being pushed at too fast a rate or if you have a long HTTP session timeout because lots of undelivered messages will be hanging around in memory. When the client application is connected to the server it will keep the HTTP session alive so I don't think there is much point in using a long session timeout. Most app servers have a default of about 30 minutes for the session timeout I believe. I would try changing this to be just 1 or 2 minutes and see if it helps your memory problems.
Setting message-time-to-live on the destination may not work if the messages have already been put in the queue of outbound messages to be sent to the Consumer. I would need to take a look at that more closely but I think in this case changing the HTTP session timeout is a better approach.

in one article he creates a samplewebapps directory in C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat 6.0\webapps\samplewebapps and copies the blazeds WEB-INF/lib into that directory and the configuration files in the flex folder across as well...http://sujitreddyg.wordpress.com/2009/04/07/setting-up-blazeds/

wasn't sure why in the first example he copied the files and folders to the samplewebapps directory while in the second example he just configured the files within the blazeds directory...thanx...(i'm a newbie at server side development)

I'll take a stab at it. The key thing to realize is the BlazeDS code is ADDED on
to the appserver. E.g. for Tomcat/WebLogic/et al one adds the reference in the web.xml file in WEB-INF.
So, what is that add-on?
1. Executable files. These are jar files and typically stuck into WEB-INF/lib
2. Configuration files. flex/services-config.xml is specified in web.xml. It refers to the other config files in WEB-INF/flex
So, the config in web.xml tells Tomcat (and its forked commercial products) to load up the Flex jars and run some classes. By standard, the "run some classes" follows the servlet lifecycle and runs specific methods in the class when the servlet is loaded, called, destroyed. So, Flex jars have a class which implements the servlet interface.
Incidentally, you may also see references to log4j, Spring, and other frameworks in the web.xml as well. They do the same sort of stuff. So, Tomcat does the passing of the HTTP packets and stages them into Java classes and the hooked in frameworks do add their own behaviours to the setup.

P.S> Also note in Flex when you setup the project properties for a Flex Project then you need to match up your URL and "context" to what you have on your server. In his exampe, the "samples" context may have already been setup so easier to use. What is a "context"? The idea is to have more than one webapp running on an appserver. In Tomcat, its basically just the subdirectory under "webapps". That directory name becomes part of the URL. E.g. webapps/samples -> http://localhost:8080/samples or webapps/mytest -> http://localhost:8080/mytest

There's really not much difference. In some cases, you might already have a web application you are using so you could just copy the contents of the blazeds web app into your existing web application.
Application servers can host more than one web application and a Flex application that uses BlazeDS can be deployed on a different web app than the one where BlazeDS is running or a different server entirely so it really just depends how you want to set things up.

I'm having trouble installing my BlazeDS turnkey

I'm runing flashbuilder on eclipse JEE and I already have Tomcat running but I'm confused about how to install BlazeDS into all of this.
The instructions here on the Adobe site are a bit confusing, I dont know what command window I need to go to just to get all this configured
a)when it says go to instal_root/tomcat/bin and enter the catalina start command I have no idea what to do
b)when it says start tomcat in startup.sh I have no idea how to do that either because the icon is blank
c)theres more i dont understand but I attach a screen shot of where I'm stuck at

How to use an ActiveMQ broker plugin

Sorry in advance if this is a stupid question but I've just inherited this project and have never used BlazeDS or ActiveMQ before. I've got a collection of various programs that are communicating through BlazeDS and ActiveMQ and I've been tasked with recording all the messages being passed between them for later analysis. It appears from this link that I could just develop a BrokerPlugin that could take care of this pretty easily. However I don't know how to add this BrokerPlugin to the system. There doesn't any appear to be any configuration data for ActiveMQ in the current system. I believe it was built on the BlazeDS turnkey server with ActiveMQ added to handle the JMS integration.
Also, I had originally just created a small app that subscribes to all the topics and saves the messages out to an xml file. That part worked for most of the messages but some of the message destinations are defined as queues though so they can't have more than one subscriber. I wasn't sure how to go about getting these messages without using a BrokerPlugin.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That's right. You can't.

A plug-in registers for call backs. Most obviously menu selections,
but also selecting a tool, clicking on a button, opening a document,
changing page etc. Also it can register an "idle" procedure to be run
when Acrobat is not busy, at intervals. Your plug-in code is run, by
Acrobat, at these moments.

Flex client can SEND but not RECEIVE messages from BlazeDS

Hi there,
I built a sample chat application that should be able to send/receive messages from a JMS topic. However, I am only able to SEND messages, I am not able to receive them. Any advice/suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated as I am seriously stuck.
My setup:
- BlazeDS Turnkey
- FioranoMQ JMS provider on remote machine
What I know:
- My MXML code is good. I am able to use the exact same code and get both subscribing and publishing working when I use 'ActiveMQ' instead of 'FioranoMQ' as my JMS provider
- FioranoMQ JMS provider is working fine, my test Java clients can both subscribe and publish to the same JMS topic that the Flex app uses
- Publishing from my Flex app is working because my Java client is able to receive messages from the same topic whenever Flex messages are sent to FioranoMQ
- My Flex app is supposedly 'subscribed' to and 'connected' to the correct (streaming-amf) channel. I know this because the MXML 'Consumer' object's "subscribed" and "connected" properties are true and no fault events appear whenever I issue "consumer.subscribe()" in my Flex app.
Sample debug console log:
(I tried sending 8 JMS messages from my Java client code to the 'mytopic' topic that my Flex app is using. The end of the log shows that SOMETHING is happening after sending these messages, but notice the actual 'message' is never streamed even in the log!)

Hi Alex, thanks for your advice. I tried reading the client-side logs, but it just physically shows what I was saying earlier - that the consumer is connected and subscribed, but no messages are coming through to it.
I've attached the output of the 'flashlog.txt' file. For the particular session shown, the flex application was sent 8 JMS messages, but as you can see nothing got through. I put a 'trace' message in the message handler function (for my consumer object), but it never gets called.

Seems to me there can only be two explanations: either my BlazeDS configuration is incorrect (which is unlikely given that everything works if I use a ActiveMQ as my JMS provider with only trivial changes to my configuration), or there is some bug within BlazeDS that is preventing it from working properly with FioranoMQ. What do you think?

Problem integrating BlazeDS into CF8 (StreamingAMFChannel not found)

Hi everyone, Ive been trying for days now to integrate BlazeDS into one of my Coldfusion 8 multi-server instances, and I get the following error in Flex Builder 3: Channel definition, mx.messaging.channels.StreamingAMFChannel, can not be found. Sorry for the dreadful amount of information that's coming, I just want to be sure I didnt do anything wrong here. My goal is to use the tutorial-chat application proposed by Adobe here: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/livecycle/articles/blazeds_gettingstarted_02.html but obviously without Tomcat. Ive got integrated LiveCycle Data Services ES, so I followed the corresponding instructions of the Installation Guide (http://opensource.adobe.com/wiki/display/blazeds/Installation+Guide). I edited "web.xml" as asked Then, I followed the optional steps (#8 to 12) to avoid overwriting my current XML files. rpc.swc is appearing under my Server SDK library path.
But I have no idea how to check if it is out of date... Both Flex and BlazeDS are kind of new to me.
I tried replacing it (+ the locale) by the ones from the flex SDK included in BlazeDS turnkey, but no luck: Flex Builder returns a "unable to load" error.
EDIT: out of curiosity, I tried removing the streamingAMF channel definition, so that the polling channel is used.
No error in Flex Builder, but when I try sending a message in the chat application, I get "Channel.Connect.Failed error NetConnection.Call.Failed: HTTP: Failed: url: 'http://london:8303/tutorial-chat/messagebroker/amfpolling'".
(and in my browser I get a 404 error with this URL)

Can anyone please tell me where i m going wrong.Is that because i m using flex2gateway for java calls?.I used it since it was how it has been configured in the turnkey project for coldfusion.I have replicated the file as it was there and since it is using flex2gateway even for javaEndpoints i felt we could use the same.
