Blue screen "solved," but can't upgrade OS

I've got a G4 iMac (circa 2002, CPU: G4 2.1) that has been running fine until yesterday. I too ran the latest system upgrade, and then upon restart couldn't get past the blue screen. I ran TechTools diagnostics, rebooted in various ways, zapped the PRAM, etc. Finally after reading some of the messages in this post I reinstalled the OS. I designated "Archive and Install," but when it completed the installation I couldn't find any archive. Still, the computer now works.
However, I can't run the OS upgraders on it. I've tried to upgrade from the version I installed (10.4.6) to 10.4.10 - I wanted to stay away from 10.4.11 which seemed to have caused my problems - and 10.4.8. But I get this message:
"You cannot install Mac OS X Update (PowerPC) on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update."
Has anyone else met this trouble?
When I run Disk Utility I can repair the Disk Permissions without problem, and the disk seems to read OK.
Now I'm trying to install some apps that have been corrupted, but my iWorks among others require a more recent OS than the 10.4.6 I am currently stuck with.
Any suggestions?

Did you use the 10.4.10 Combo or Delta? The Delta would only update 10.4.9 to 10.4.10, the Combo will update 10.4.0 <-> 10.4.9 up to 10.4.10.

    Mac OS X does not offer a Clean install option.    If by clean install you mean erasing the system, that is not recommended unless:
    1. You bought a used/refurbished Mac and there is software on it without any accompanying discs, and it is older than July 20, 2011 in model release:

    Or if it is at or newer, then erase it if it has applications installed that would not have been prebundled with it and you have no CDs for those applications.
    You don't want someone else's software keys, or accounts, or to be running unlicensed software.  At and newer Macs offer a built-in internet restore for their software with a command-R boot that lets you erase the system with Disk Utility, and then install from the internet the latest operating system.
    2. You have a hardware issue and want to eliminate possible software issues as the cause when troubleshooting a problem all at once.
    Issues affecting a new install have to be isolated before you attempt it.   Unless you know it is software or hardware, erasing may only mask other problems.

  • Stuck in inifinite loop: Get the Upgrade to 10.3 Screen. But Can't Install

    Trying to upgrade my moms laptop to work with her iPhone.
    When iTunes opens it just displays the upgrade to 10.3 software (can't access store). Can't install the software becasue she needs to upgrade the system software. Can't upgrade the system software because she can't access the iTunes store.
    This is pretty rediculous. Is there any solution other than having to go buy a physical installation disk?

  • Blue Screen when Logging in after Upgrade

    Hi, I upgraded to 10.5.5 yesterday and had no problems.
    Until today, just a few minutes ago when I started my iMac. A blue screen simply appeared and stayed instead of the login window. I tried out all kinds of keyboard commands but no reaction. Then I clicked the power-button on the back of my iMac and suddenly the login screen appeared, and then suddenly disappeared again as the iMac went into sleep mode.
    Then I was able to wake it by clicking the button again, and the login screen was there. So nothing bad happened, but it got me very worried and disappointed. I am used to a lot more stability and perfection from Apple...
    Please tell me if there's anything I should know relating to this incident, or if you want to know more.

    What I said doesn't in any way say something about my interest. It's how I feel about the new version of Mac, and why I don't have backups. You bet ya I'm still interested in solving Mac issues, because I love Mac. I am constantly helping my friend who has just recently switched from Windows to Mac with technical/usage issues and I wouldn't come here in the first place if I wasn't interested.
    But if this glitch doesn't happen to me again, then yes, you're right, I wont be interested in solving this particular mystery anymore, even though I hope Apple stumbles across it sooner or later and fixes it despite its harmlessness. Because if you go too far without noticing ugly, yet small things about the OS, it might turn into an OS with the reliability of a Windows.
    However, above all of this, I am quite confident that Leopard, or rather "Snow Leopard" in this case, will bring back the stability and reliability to the Mac that I felt with Tiger.

    Besides, everyone is in a bad mood at some point in time of the day/week and since pure text can't convey these feelings as an eye-to-eye conversation would, try to cut everyone some slack before coming to conclusions; being supportive is the best you can do when communicating with a person whose state of emotions you just cannot tell through this type of medium!
    And in any case, I respect you. Seeing that you have already made thousands of posts in these discussion boards gives me confirmation that you also love Mac and that you also like helping strangers with their computers; that's something I can understand, not only from my past participation in topics here, but also from helping other people with web development on IRC.

After deleting 17G of music files to make room on the 74G drive, The iPhoto and iWeb updates seemed to load okay, but the OS 10.5.8 update failed - message opened said the computer encountered an error and must shut down. Now I get the blue screen. Startup with 'V' pressed shows multiple lines saying: error-can't find IntelCPU Power Manager. What now?? I  reset PRAM, I think.....?????

    I am concerned that you might have applied a system updated intended for an Intel iMac, while you have a PPC (non-Intel) iMac. Your PPC OS should not be looking for an "IntelCPU Power Manager."
    Have you tried booting from the 10.5 install DVD/CD and repairing the hard drive, plus repairing permissions?
    If you done the repairs mentioned above, and your problem still persists, you can also try doing a safe boot. (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455 ) Then, if none of these things worked, if I were in your shoes (it's hard to diagnose these things without being there in person) I would first check that there is adequate disk space, then I would boot from the 10.5 DVD/CD install disk and reinstall the operating system. There is an option to do an archive and install preserving user files/settings, that would be the option you want, as it will save your files but install a new OS. Make sure you have a good backup of your files first. If you do not have one, use "target mode" to copy all your files before embarking on an new OS install. Assuming that you do succeed with this install, then use Software Update to get the right updates for your iMac.

  • Blue screen of death, can't boot recovery or from external disk.

    Hello Guys.
    I have a very wiered problem with my 15 Macbook Pro early 2011 (thunderbolt), latest version of mountain lion (10.8.4?).
    The computer does boot but won't show up the login screen. I've tried  to boot in recovery mode, but as soon as recovery boots up it only shows a blank blue screen. The same for booting from an install USB drive or a external HDD.
    What I've also tried:
    - NVPRAM reset
    - chdsk in Singleuser mode
    Nothing helped so far.
    I know this was asked before (on a different forum though) but seems like they couldn't figure out a solution.
    Is there anyone who can help with that?

    Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.
    Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
    If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
    Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
    *An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

    Hi Gwen,
    In order to assist you, we will need the .DMP files to analyze what exactly occurred at the time of the crash, etc.
    If you don't know where .DMP files are located, here's how to get to them:
    1. Navigate to the %systemroot%\Minidump folder.
    2. Copy any and all DMP files in the Minidump folder to your Desktop and then zip up these files.
    3. Upload the zip containing the .DMP files to Onedrive or a hosting site of your choice and paste in your reply. Prefered sites: Onedrive, Mediafire, Dropbox, etc. Nothing with wait-timers.
    4 (optional): The type of .DMP files located in the Minidump folder are known as Small Memory Dumps. In %systemroot% there will be what is known as a Kernel-Dump (if your system is set to generate). It is labeled MEMORY.DMP. The difference
    between Small Memory Dumps and Kernel-Dumps in the simplest definition is a Kernel-Dump contains
    much more information at the time of the crash, therefore allowing further debugging of your issue. If your upload speed permits it, and you aren't going against any strict bandwidth and/or usage caps, etc, the Kernel-Dump is the best
    choice. Do note that Kernel-Dumps are much larger in size due to containing much more info, which is why I mentioned upload speed, etc.
    If you are going to use Onedrive but don't know how to upload to it, please visit the following:
    Upload photos and files to Onedrive.
    Please note that any "cleaner" programs such as TuneUp Utilities, CCleaner, etc, by default will delete .DMP files upon use.
    If your computer is not generating .DMP files, please do the following:
    1. Start > type %systemroot% which should show the Windows folder, click on it. Once inside that folder, ensure there is a Minidump folder created. If not, CTRL-SHIFT-N to make a New Folder and name it Minidump.
    2. Windows key + Pause key. This should bring up System. Click Advanced System Settings on the left > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Advanced > Ensure there's a check-mark for 'Automatically manage paging file size for all
    drives'.
    3. Windows key + Pause key. This should bring up System. Click Advanced System Settings on the left > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings > System Failure > ensure there is a check mark next to 'Write an event to the system
    log'.
    Ensure Small Memory Dump is selected and ensure the path is %systemroot%\Minidump.
    4. Double check that the WERS is ENABLED:
    Start > Search > type services.msc > Under the name tab, find Windows Error Reporting Service > If the status of the service is not Started then right click it and select Start. Also ensure that under Startup Type it is set to Automatic rather than
    Manual. You can do this by right clicking it, selecting properties, and under General selecting startup type to 'Automatic', and then click Apply.
    If you cannot get into normal mode to do any of this, please do this via Safe Mode.

  • Start up disc is full, permenant blue screen! How can i delete files to create space?

    The issue I have is my Mac must be so full that it's not letting me do this. When I try and start in 'safe mode' it doesn't let me. All I get is a blue screen that I've left for over 30mins but does nothing apart from go into a screen saver.
    I'm pretty sure I've backed up everything to an external hard drive, so I did have a thought about wipiing the computer competely and then putting everyhting back onto the Mac from the external hard drive. Just a thought but ideally I don't really want to do as I'm not sure how to do it.
    Does anyone have any ideas of how I can delete documents or any ideas on what I can delete to free up some space so the Mac boots up properyl...?!?!
    Help will be much appreciated!

  • Blue screen of death after ram upgrade on a Toshiba Satellite C655 laptop

    I ordered an upgrade for a Toshiba Satellite C655(PSC08U-02D037) running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. I've trying for a month to get this to work consistently. When I first installed it, it worked fine for the first few days, but then after that I kept getting an error that would pop up "Display has Stopped Responding And Recovered" and the screen would flicker turn to black for a second. It didn't happen a lot at first, but then it got progressively worse to the point that it would crash my browsers, and sometimes when I tried to play certain videos, I would get the blue screen of death, and then the computer would have to restart.
    I updated my bios, graphics drivers, I checked to see if maybe I failed to install it properly and reinstalled it, no avail. Finally I just took the ram out, and then I stopped having these issues. Which leads me to believe that it may have something to do with the memory upgrade. I ran the scanner as suggested when I was looking to upgrade, and what was recommended was a ( System 2gb DDR3-1600 Sodimm 1.35v CL11 ) ram stick part number CT6316802, which is the one I ended up ordering. I'm not sure what else to do but assume that what I ordered is either defective or just doesn't work with my laptop.

    I am sorry for the issues you are experiencing with your upgrade. How is this memory installed? Is it just one module or did you purchase two? Did you install it with any exisitng RAM? If you have two modules have you tried installing one module at a time? This would help us determine if the issue is with one defective memory module or both causing the issue.
     

  • Blue screen at startup - can't resolve

    I'm getting a blue screen when I start my Mac and none of the step that I have followed from the following apple page (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1545) have helped. I can't do option A, as I do not have FireWire cable. Option C did not work at all, so I resorted to option B which tells me to do an Archive and Install of Leopard. The only problem is that when choosing to reinstall Leopard on the Mac volume, I am told that I must erase everything already on the volume in order to do so. In other words, there is no "Archive and Install" option that I can choose from. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    How to Perform an Archive and Install
    An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
    Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

    Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.

    As many of you already know, the BLUE/GREY screen of death has been affecting many mac mini users. i am one of them. i have tried safe mode single user mode everything booting from cd's everything. so i was trying to figure out how to back up my 54.3 gb of computer i hadnt already backed up in the first place. i went on my macbook and went to network and tada! my mac mini was letting me log on remotely. just to browse files and copy which is great for backing up, however that takes a very long time. now, is the reason for my mac mini BLUE SCREENING found in a file that is either there or not there because i can now modify all the files on that computer now. so wether i have to download a file here and then put it on or just delete i file i can totally control all of it. any help would be much appreciated! thanks sooo mcuh

    im terribly sorry about my wording issues haha. i get a black screen, as if i was running... WINDOWS COMMAND!!! lol. it says Login:

    then it says hellow slfaranda (short name)
    its not allowing me to get to the real login screen though
    i cant get to the login and i cant go on my computer now it wont boot only to that screen.
    i can modify the files though from a different computer of a network. i am asking why its giving me this black screen with white text. is there a file missing in my mini that i need to replace or something? because if there is i can do it i just need to know what's causing it to not boot correctly.
    dont worry about the display thing i know how it is thanks alot though!
