Linking to "book with link" topics

Hi Everyone,
In RH10, is it possible to link to a topic that is a "book with link" topic and have the book topic expand in the TOC?
If you link to a normal topic with the "Autosynchronise TOC" option switched on, the destination topic in the TOC is highlighted in grey and the book is expanded like this:
However if I link to the Printing book topic, the book looks like this:
But I'd like it to look like this:
Can this be done?

Apologies if I'm being obtuse here, but I don't fully understand your suggestion.

Do you mean the source topic links to the redirect topic, which in turn "links" to the destination book topic via the meta tag?

RH11 TOC "book with link" icon

Hello! I have a question about customizing the TOC icons in RH11. I used the Responsive HTML5 Settings GUI to change all the TOC icons... EXCEPT the open book with link. This appears to be pulling a .png from the template resources folder, but there is no way to change it in the output settings within RH11 itself. Can I edit one of the Javascript files get it to pull a custom icon? Or am I stuck with the default icon? (In the image below, it's the third icon down.)

Willam is our resident guru on these matters but pending his confirmation, I think the solution is to locate the image in the template folder and substitute it with what you want, using the same name and backing up the original in case.

Link in Webhelp to open sub-TOC tree of a 'Book with Link'

Hi all, hoping I can find a solution for this.
Currently, and as it should, I link to a page in my webhelp, from within my webhelp. i.e front page has a link that refers to another section in the webhelp. The links work fine, these links however are going to the 'book' (I created the TOC books to be books with links) and within these books are other topics.#
Is there a way to make it so that when the user clicks a link that goes to one of these 'books' in the TOC, that the toc tree also drops down.
example (hard to explain)
TOC
Home (contains link that user clicks which goes to Page 1)
Page 1 (book with link)
sub-page1 (remains closed until user opens it by clicking 'Page 1' book)
subpage 2 (remains closed until user opens it by clicking 'Page 1' book)
I would like those sub-pages to be opened when the link is clicked. Can it be done?

For what it's worth, Leon's suggestion is what I too would recommend. When I facilitate a RoboHelp class and am discussing the "Book with link" feature, I typically will suggest that this approach is used.
@Leon - I think this changed with a recent forum upgrade. Annoying, isn't it?
Standard definiton of any upgrade: Uninstall old bugs. Install new ones.

Webhelp RH8: TOC book not linking to topic

Hi (again),
I seem to have another little issue.
In generating our helpsystem, we would like to have books that display general information when clicked and also display the subsequent topics. That all works fine, I link a topic to the TOC book and it displays the contents of the selected page.
However, when I only have a book (no topics), linking a topic does not work. In the output it displays as a page. Is there a way I can have a book linked to a topic while there are no other topics in that book?

Thanks RoboColum(n) for your pointer. Due to time limitations I could only look at it briefly and give it one try. Redirecting didn't work in this instance. I have a few redirect pages which work fine but so far I haven't managed to get a book to display when there is only one page in that book. For now I have avoided the problem by having an empty page when the book is clicked. Not pretty and I will be looking at this again when there is more time.

In the HTML version of RoboHelp 6 we can edit the book
properties and link a topic to a book so that there are no
"redundant" items in the TOC; all items when selected display a
topic.
Can the same be done in the Word version of Robohelp

RoboHelp 8 HTML - Toolbar Button: Email with Link to Topic

Realized this would be better on this forum than the WebHelp forum:
Within a skin, I'd like to create a custom email button on my toolbar that would allow a user to email a direct link to a specific file in my RoboHelp project (a Share this Topic feature).
I thought it might be something like this:
window.location=('mailto:[email protected]?Subject=Useful Step-by-Step&body=This Step-by-Step may be helpful for you: ' + window.location)
but that just calls the toolbar, not the topic; the focus isn't on the correct window.
I have the following code that I could imbed on each topic page, but for consistency, I'd like to have this functionality on the toolbar instead. Has anyone done this or come across this before?

For a number of reasons we have decided to take a different approach.
I was trying to include a button in the toolbar for launching the email program to send feedback and comments home in a prepopulated mail subject and body.
I think instead, we can add this as a link in the master page using a modification of Peter's snippet 38 "Email this topic". This rsolves all the problems i was having (i am a novice tweaker not a scripter or coder) and we are able to get our first skin ready in the new Help in time for the forthcoming release candidate.
However, my colleague also wants to add another link using this snippet as origianlly intended, but the body includes a link to the topic file, which in our case is stored locally. We are using webhelp in local product installations rather than via a file server. Obviously the link doesn't help anyone operaitng on another machine.
How can the Javascript be modified to actually send the topic file itself?

Books linked to Topics

I've been creating new topics while creating my TOC; linking
new topics to newly created books. When I compile and generate Html
help, everything looks great. Until i exit out of Robohelp and go
back in. At that point, any book that was linked to a topic is now
a page. The Adobe support staff says this happened because i didn't
create pages for my books when i greated them initially, so any
book that does not have a page, automatically becaomes a page. Does
anybody know how to fix this retroactively? Essentially change a
page into a book? As it stands, the way i see it, i have to more or
less start over, which would be annoying since my TOC is pretty
large....

Hmmm, so why would you want a book that has no pages inside?
Doesn't matter I suppose.
If this will be a compiled .CHM output file, you can do the
following. Sorry, but the bad news is taht it will involve hand
editing each entry. The good news is that you will end up with what
it appears you want.
1. In the RoboHelp TOC Editor, right click the topic and
click Properties off the context menu.
2. Click the Advanced tab.
3. Click the Image drop-down and choose the desired book
image.
4. Click OK to dismiss the dialog.
5. Recompile the project and test.

TOC - Books Linked to Topics?

I'm hoping that I'm just overlooking something and that my suspicion isn't true.
I have chapters, several levels deep of subchapters and then, of course, my topcs.
Something like this...
Help Root
     L Chapter Top
          L Subchapter
               L Subsubchapter
                    L Topic
I want each of my chapters to link to topics - basically introductory pages that I can't have at the same level as the topics because it woudn't make sense. I seem to be able to do this in RoboHelp HTML but not in RoboHelp for Word?

I think your suspicion is true. You cannot add a link to a book in the TOC when using RH for Word. You also can't have a page under a page in the format you describe or a book under a page. All pages do fall before books when it comes to the TOC hierarchy.

An alternative you might want to think about is to put each chapter in one topic. Then add mid-topic links to the subsections on the page. You could also include this mid-topics in the Index. At the top of the chapter, build the contents of that section and make jumps to the mi-topics on the page. At the top, you could also include your intro.
Another alternative is to build an overview page with your intro.

Is there a way to link two FrameMaker 12 books with shared content into the same RoboHelp 11 file?

This one might require some back story.
I'm working at a company with roughly 60 business units that will each be getting their own emergency response procedures (.FM files compiled into a single FrameMaker .book file for their department). I then want to link all of these books to a single RoboHelp so that when it comes time to publish all of these plans into WebHelp menus I can do that with a single batch generate/publish.
My problem is that some of the FM files within the books are shared (maybe two or more departments are at the same location or all of them share the same corporate level plans) so that when I try to link two books with a shared FM file it throws an error.
Is there away to allow multiple copies of a FM file to exist in a single RoboHelp? Or is there a better solution to the task at hand?
Any suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated as I am still a moderate beginner with Frame and RoboHelp.

P.S. Just to complicate things this will all be done via SharePoint so books and FM files live there, and then the RoboHelp output will be published there.

I think you’re looking at creating a merged RH project – one parent project that subsumes all the linked FM to RH child projects – read up on merged help on Peter’s site (grainge.org)

Contact photos are not showing up in Mail message list, even though the message will link to the contact card in Address Book with the photo in it.

Mac InDesign CS6 crashes when adding files with links to Windows network into book

Our Mac network is unstable, so I tested linking InDesign CS6 files (on my Mac's hard drive) to .jpg files on our company's very stable Windows network rather to the same .jpg files on our Mac network. I tested with 4 simple, small InDesign files. When these 4 files were linked to images on a storage drive on our Mac network, I could drag all 4 files into a book and export the book to PDF. But when linked to the same images on the Windows network, while each file would open fine with no errors, and while I could generate a PDF from each individual file, the moment I dragged the 4 files into a book, InDesign crashed, generating pages of information in the crash report form.
I have no problem making 500 page manuals on my hard drive, comprised of about 50 InDesign files, with links to THOUSANDS of image files on a storage drive on our Mac network. Is there some trick to making a book with files linked to images on a Windows network? If there is no simple answer, who could I call to set us up so this will work?

It seems, this is all you need to do... your message isn't clear as to whether you've fixed your issue or not.

Backup (Passport) with link fails at Contact/Calendar

as the topic says, the Blackberry Link backup function disconnects my device while trying to copy the "Device Settings and Local Contacts/Calendar Data".
It tells me immediately (when hit's Device Settings....) "Device disconnected - check if your device is connected correctly".
I've got 2 Accounts syncing calendar with my BBPP:
GMail and Outlook.com (EAS/Exchange)
I've read some stuff about "Social Network calendar entrys" which can occur errors.
What can i do at this point?

Okay, if possible I would like to review some logs.
If you could please perform the following steps and then direct message me with the logs that are produced?

Now perform a software reset on the phone by holding the top button down and then choosing Restart from the options presented.
When the phone has completely rebooted pleas reproduce the error with Link. Now, while the phone is still connected, choose Preferences and then Creating Log Files. Here please make sure that Gather extra log information is checked off.
On the handheld please open the help application, then swipe down from the top and select create report. When it is finished do not submit the file, instead please include it with the logs generate from Link. On the device they are stored within the internal memory under Documents/Logs/
