Boosting wireless signal....

Hi,
I am trying to help my parents out with their wireless internet. They live in a fairly large home that is made with adobe walls (a thick wall made of mud). While this is great for insulation, it makes their internet signal weak unless you are very close to the modem. They don't want to run a bunch of additional wires, yet they want internet in a couple other rooms. They have a Macbook Pro (with newer airport extreme card), so I am perplexed why they cannot get signal in their bedroom which is about 30 feet away from their desktop computer (where the modem is)
So, is it possible to boast a wireless signal? Can you buy another modem and have it cover the weak areas? They have their internet through Qwest and their modem is connected to their phone line.
What is the best solution?
Thanks!
Gary

HI Gary,
AirPort: Potential sources of interference
Try resetting the modem. Disconnect from the power source, wait about 20 seconds and reconnect.

You would need to check with the modem vendor for help with signal strength.

  • Boost Wireless Signal with Airport Express

I bought the new airport express to boost the signal from my time capsule (in my house) to my garage office.
I have the AX set up but I don't see any difference in the signal.
    What am I doing wrong?

    Mike, welcome to the discussions!
Check the settings for both devices using AirPort Utility as follows:
    1) For the Time Capsule, click on Manual Setup and then click the Wireless tab below the row of icons to display the wireless settings for your TC. Make sure there is a check mark next to "allow this network to be extended"
    2) For the Express, click Manual Setup and click the Wireless tab. Wireless Mode should be "extend a wireless network" (Users often choose "join" by mistake when they are trying to extend the network). Make sure there is a check mark next to "allow wireless clients".
    Any improvement?

  • Weak Wireless Signal Boost?

Will the WRE54G Range Expander boost the signal strength of a wireless signal. I have free internet from my apartment complex and would like to take advantage of it, I am however only able to get a strong enough signal (low) in the closet. If I placed a range expander in the closet will this enable me to have access throughout my unit?

Yes you can use it but  then you need some configuration details like channel etc from the source to configure your range expander.

  • Express - "boosting" Netgear signal, and printing wirelessly?

    Hi, all:
A buddy of mine has asked me to ask the following for him (and I have similar issues myself). He's using WinXP Home with a Netgear dg834pn router. He's bought an AirPort Express to use when he's on the road, but he wants to know if he can use his AP Express at home to "boost" the signal he gets from his Netgear router. Is this possible, and what must he do?
Second, Giovanni would like to know whether or not he can print wirelessly (via the AP Express's USB port) if he is somehow able to get his AP Express to "boost" the Netgear router's signal. I told him I thought that he could do so only if he replaced the Netgear router with the AP Express altogether, but I'm not really sure. Hence, my questions.
Oh, and I assume that if he can get his AP Express to "boost" or "bridge" the Netgear signal, he should also be able to play his iTunes from his laptop, correct?
    Sorry for the newb-like questions.
    TIA,
    Bill J.

No this is not possible with a Netgear router.
You can not use an Airport Express to "boost" or "extend" a Netgear wireless network. It is possible to configure the Airport Express to join the network as a client.

In client mode, he can get the Airport Express to join the existing wireless network (as a client) and then he will be able to print via a shared printer and stream AirTunes from his iTunes.
    What is client mode?

  • Boosting the wireless signal

    Hello,
Can anyone tell me if I can use the LINKSYS by Cisco Wireless-G Range Expander Model No. WRE54G on my M1424WR Verizon Router to boost the wireless signal in my laptop. I do have wireless signal, however since the router is not very close to the spot in which I usually use my laptop the signal sometime gets weak. For this reason I searched the web and came up with this device for signal boosting, my question is if this device will work with my Verizon router or make it worst.
    Thank you.

OK, I am sorry that I did not get back to you sooner.
I have tried every idea you suggested, but not to my satisfaction. I called Verizon and they changed the channel to channel 11 and it not help. I bought the devices you recommended but neither one of them were good. I then bumped in to an AMPED HIGH POWER WIRELESS-300N SMART REPEATER. I just got it this afternoon, and I just finished to set it up, and guess what, it is working great.
I figured I should share this with all of you, and I thank everyone that put his input.

  • Wireless signal boost

I have done a search through the forum posts and have found some useful information on  increasing the wireless signal strength in my property, but I have a specific question whic I could do with some clarification on please?
I am using Home Hub 2 as my main router, this is situated upstairs in my house and the main computer is connected to it via ethernet cable. Also connected is a BT vision box which is situated downstairs and is linked via BT supplied Comtrend adapters.
I have an old Home Hub (Version 1.5 I believe) which I would like to use to boost the wireless signal downstairs, looking at the information on the forum this should be possible but what I need to know is can I piggy back the connection on the Comtrend adaptor which is currently connected to the Vision box and link that into the HH1.5? or will this compromise the function of the vision box? If not, is there any hardware I can get which will allow this to work?
    Any assistance apprecaited

You will have to use an Ethernet switch on the output of the Comtrend adapter, you cannot just piggyback Ethernet cables together.
If you look at this diagram, you will see a suitable switch at the bottom.

  • Can I boost the wireless signal?

Our wireles signal on our PowerBook g4 is always much lower than other devices in the same room.  Does anyone know if there is a way to boost the wireless signal?
    Thanks,
    Jenny

    Hi Jenny,
Normally you can only adjust the signal strength of the broadcasting unit (router), not the receiver (computer). The PowerBook antenna is in the screen frame--about all you can do is rotate the computer to see if it can better pick up the signal.
If the wireless icon shows fewer bars but everything still works, I would not be too concerned. When we upgraded our cable service, the ISP gave us a modem that includes wireless and I noticed our geriatric PowerBook G4 1Ghz showing fewer bars than with the older wireless router we used. However, once it connects, it runs as fast as before.
Remember that no PowerBook G4 has wireless faster than "g" where newer devices may have the faster 'N' protocol. If you are finding the old PBG4 slower than the newer devices, that's a hardware limitation, not signal strength.
If you have more specific issues, please by all means post them and we can see if there is something else afoot.

  • We use a time capsule as the wireless router for our house.  We cannot get service to the whole house.  Is there anyway to boost the signal?

We use a 2TB Time Capsule as our wireless airport for the whole house but we can't get the signal to all rooms.  Is there anyway to boost the signal?

You to purchase an extreme or express and use it as wrieless extender.. that is the only way Apple provided for boosting the signal.

  • Wireless signal booster

We have bt infinity and good network coverage in the home. Recently we converted the garage and cannot pick up the signal from that room. This is now my sons bedroom and he has an Xbox and iPad which he normally uses wirelessly but now cannot. Is there anything we can buy to improve the wireless signal. Ideally we do not want a wired connection. I have called the help desk but to no avail. Thanks

  • Need help extending wireless signal.

Hey all. So here at home we have the BT Home Hub 4 with BT Infinity. Our house is three stories tall, and the router is on the first floor. On the first floor, the connection is fast and reliable. Up here on the third floor (where my bedroom is), the connection to my PC is okay (slower than downstairs but reliable and stays connected), but the connection to any mobile devices is very unreliable and slow (very common disconnects).
I'd like to consider my options about boosting the signal so it's stronger on the third floor. What type of devices can I get to do this? Lets exclude a wired connection for now to save me running cable around the house (I don't know how practical that would be). I saw that BT are selling devices which you plug into the mains and run a cable from that to your device. Out of interest, would that offer any increase in speed if I plugged it in here in my bedroom? Surely because the original signal has the same distance to travel, it wouldn't make a difference? Failing that option, what else is there? I've heard about wireless boosters/repeaters but i'm not sure how well they work and if I need any extra kit to use them.
Also as a side question, does anyone know why my PC can pick up a reliable signal on the third floor, but my phone/games console struggle to do so? My wireless adapter connected to my PC is like 10 years old, so you'd think my newer devices would have better receiving capabilities.
    Thanks for any help.

The BT devices you are referring to send the ethernet signal through your mains wiring, so you get a "wired" system without having to install any new wiring.  You can get models that just have an ethernet socket, or ones that have a WiFi hotspot as well.  Be aware that the speed you get through them is very much dependent on the nature of your mains wiring.  The claimed 500Mbps speed is only achievable under laboratory conditions.
If you go for the WiFi ones, you get a second wireless point in your home, and your devices can connect to whichever gives the best signal.  Most gadgets can remember multiple WiFi passwords, so it's easy to hop between your Home Hub and the hotspot.
For your side question, it will depend to a large extent on the size and orientation of the wireless antenna.  As gadgets keep getting smaller, the antennas do as well, which may well wipe out the gains from the more advanced circuitry.

  • Best way to boost wifi signal?

    Hello,
I just got a new imacG5 with the wireless integrated. I can connect to my wireless network at home, but the signal I get where I have my computer is very low, close to none. I was wondering if anyone could recomend the best way to boost my wireless signal (relays, boosters, bridges, etc.).
    Thanks
    imac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I use Airport Express. Signal is strong within 50 feet of my computer (54 mps). I'm able to use my iBook anywhere in the house (we live on one-floor). Device was very easy to set up. Very reliable piece of equipment.
You can find a good price on Amazon (usually around $100), including free shipping, although not sure about the "free" part for shipments to Puerto Rico.

  • I have a net gear wireless router and a APE working great inside the house, but the wireless signal is weak in the backyard, can I get a net gear extender for the back and it will also send my music to the airport express?

I have a net gear wireless router and a APE working great inside the house, but the wireless signal is weak in the backyard, can I get a net gear extender for the back yard and it will boost our wo
Ireless signal and also send my music to the airport express? Or does the airport express work as a stand alone hub?

Trust me when I say this coming from 20 years of experience.
Get a powered external drive, format it 1 Partition Option: GUID and OS X Extended Journed as the format in Disk Utility.
Download and install Carbon Copy Cloner, clone internal drive to external drive.
Set a schedule to remind you to do it at least once a week, keep it near your charger.
When you plug your charger in, do plug the clone and power the machine up, set the display to sleep only,
    CCC will do the rest.
If you want to boot from it, hold the option/alt and select it Startup Manager.
I've seen many TimeMachine and TimeCapsule nightmares and so far haven't seen a problem from anyone using a bootable clone.
It's simple, it's easy, it's more reliable and more powerful than what Apple does and it only takes plugging in a extra cable.
Make as many clones as you want, keep them time seperated, off site etc. etc.
Cables don't have network issues, clones can be verified in seconds merely by booting from them.
Clones protect your productivity, your up in seconds on a clone despite even the hard drive dying.
Software problem? No sweat, boot of the clone and reverse clone your problems away.
If you want to fuss and muss with half implemented TimeMachine and TimeCapsule network headaches then prepare to suffer.
I don't like to suffer, I bought a Mac not to suffer, but it appears you do with TimeMachine and TimeCapsule.

  • Wireless signal very weak

I have a 32GB iPad that continues to have difficulty in maintaining a strong wireless signal. I am using a 1 TB Time Capsule (latest firmware) running 802.11n (b/g compatible) with WAP2 Personal as security. The other wireless devices on it receive a good, strong signal. This includes a MBP, an iPhone and a Wii. I've found that at my office I also occasionally have this problem.
I see that this discussion group is filled with people having the same or similar problems, so I thought I'd start a thread that dealt with the weak signal problem only. Anyone else out there seeing this problem?

Try using a WiFi extender.  It will take your existing Wifi (regardless of the type of router you have) and extend / boost your Wireless to give you much stronger signal and additional range..

  • Can I use a second Airport Express on the 1st floor to boost the signal from the 2nd floor Airport Express?

We have a wiFi network with on Airport Express on the upper floor. Watching NetFlix via AppleTV on the television downstairs is annoying since it stops to buffer the video every few minutes (NetFlix works smoothly upstairs, closer to the Airport Express). Can I use a 2nd Airport Express downstairs to boost the signal? If so, how do I configure it?

Yes, you can use a second 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) to extend the range of the first one.
Here are the basic steps to do so:
Dynamic WDS - Extending a Wireless Network Setup
If practical, place the base stations in near proximity to each other during the setup phase. Once done, move them to their desired locations.
Open AirPort Utility, and then, select the base station that will connect to the Internet.
Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then, click Wireless.
Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then, select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
Next, select the base station that will extend this network, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then, choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
Enter the base station network and base station password if necessary.
Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

  • I have an HP2055dn printer that isn't receiving a wireless signal from an Mac Airport router.

I moved the printer and it doesn't receive the wireless signal.  Does the printer need to be attached to my computer for it to receive a wireless signal from another computer?

    Hi,
Do you use access point (AP) for your network ? The printer needs to be close to the AP, not computer(s). One option is to have a booster/amplifier but this costs money and time.
    Regards.
