Borderless Printing US Letter: Doc Margin Question

Hi everyone,
I have a quick question about printing using HP Photosmart 5510 which offers borderless printing. I have inDesign CS 5 and using Mac OS X Lion.
I'm trying to print a fllyer. After I select my document type to US Letter in inDesign, i placed my jpg flyer (8.5x11) in the document and it fit snug. However, when I selected borderless US letter print, the flyer came out different than what was in inDesign. It seems like inDesign automatically "cropped" the flyer...
Here is what i mean (1st pic is inDesign, 2nd pic is the actual printed flyer). You can see how it's "cropped." The word Naruko should be a few milimeters away from the border, yet when it's printed, it actually got cut off. What's causing this?

I don't have any experience with printers that offer borderless printing, but the thing they have to get around is the gripper margin. In offset printing, the gripper pulls the paper through the press, so you can't have image that goes all the way to the edge of the page on the lead edge. That's why people who need borderless printing on press will use a larger page with crops, and bleed the image into the crop area, so that the cutter can cut through bleed, and if the trim is off by a bit, it will still look like it was printed to the edge.
I know that office printers also have the gripper margin limitation, so I'm not exactly sure how borderless printing is accomplished. Maybe the lead edge is pushed through and grabbed after it's imaged, but that's just a guess. From what I can see in your second image, it looks like the image was placed further down the page than you had intended, which is another limitation to office printers—the fact that there is some amount of drift between where the image is supposed to print and where it actually does. If you pick something on the page and measure from the top edge to it, does it measure the same as it does in InDesign? If it's also a bit lower, then I think you are dealing with the image drifting a bit. If the top is where it should be, I'd double-check that the paper size and the document size aren't off by a bit.

Not quite sure what you mean by "print both letter and legal docs at same time".
If you mean that sometimes you want to print a document on Letter size paper, and at other times you want to print a different document on Legal sized paper, then all that is neccessary is to ensure that:
The printer knows what Paper Size (e.g. Letter or Legal) is present in each tray; on many LaserJet devices, the size is detected automaticaly by sensors in each tray (except for the drop-down tray), but some devices may require that you set the size via front panel menus, or (for network models) via the Embedded Web Server equivalent.
You may also need to specify what Paper Type (e.g. Plain or Letterhead) is present in each tray, in order to distinguish between two or more trays which have the same paper size loaded.
Within your appllcation / print preferences, ensure that you select the required combination of size and type for the document.
But if you mean how do you print a document with some pages on one size of paper, and other pages on a different size, this may only be possible with bespoke applications and/or printer drivers.

Printing on Letter size paper, Margin issues!

I am working from a Dell Optiplex 755 with Windows XP, Illustrator CS2 and an HP 4345 printer.
The problem is summarized in the below paragraphed points:
We print on an 8.5x11 sheet of paper, with artwork sized for 8.5 x 11 exactly. The artwork contains 4 quarter page images to be cut into flyers, which each have 1/4" margins all the way around them. There is a back side as well, created with the same specifications. We wish to print these flyers duplex from high quality PDF files that we created in Illustrator.
When the print comes out, the right hand margin of the sheet is larger than the top, bottom, and left margins.
The top, bottom, left margins= 0.166"; this doesn't effect the top, bottom, and left sides of the artwork, as the .25" margin we setup on the artwork is greater than the .166" margin of the print area.
However, the right hand margin= 0.306"; this means that the right side of the artwork gets cut off by .056" (.306-.25")
In order to fit all of the artwork on the page, we can either shift the Page Tiling Print Area over slightly, or we can select the print option "Shrink to Fit". However this is a problem because we are printing the two sides as a duplex (printed both sides), and the tiled artwork on the front won't line up what is printed on the back because of the larger right margin. Therefore if the sides don't line up when we go to cut, the information is going to be cut off on the opposite side to the one we are cutting.
The printer setting for 8.5x11" paper "Letter" is what we believe to be creating the offset margin. (We checked the specifications for a Letter print, and the standard margins were identical to the ones we see exhibited in the print outs, 0.166" vs. 0.306")
We understand that there might be a way to set up your own custom print setting through Adobe Acrobat/ Photoshop/ Illustrator for a specfic type of print job, allowing you to control the print margins, but we are not familiar with the process.
Can you think of any other possible causes and/or solutions for the problems that are described?

Thanks for the feedback Karen! I'm not sure that the setup process is pricesly the same in illustrator but I've got some screenshots of how the artwork is setup to give you an idea.

So I think that the artwork is correctly setup, however the problem lies in the printing area that seems to be predetermined by the printer setting 'Letter' for 8.5x11" paper (see the dotted line on the second screen shot).
I see what you're talking about when you say 'centered on page' and yes we have Auto-Rotate and Center selected in the Page Handling options when printing from PDF. However it will still just chop off the artwork that comes within .306" of the right side of the page. Is there anyway around this .306" margin that seems to be set by the printer?

Borderless printing in Lightroom 5--Mac Yosemite, Canon i9900. Selected 8.5x11 borderless media, but LR insists on printing with borders. Tried adjusting cell size and margins, but LR won't allow setting to zero.

LR won't allow me to adjust the margins below minimum values of about 0.25 in. Borderless printing and 8.5x11 borderless media are selected.
LR also won't allow me to increase the cell size. It seems to have a maximum of 8x10.68.
Aspect ratio of the image I'm trying to print is 8.5x11 so it should be a perfect fit.
When I print the same image in Photoshop, it prints borderless just fine on the same printer.
Mac, Yosemite, Canon i9900.

I have had some more trials to print without boarders. This time, it was inside of iPhoto. I had made a greeting card and wanted to print to a custom size. but without the ability to select the size as a boarder less size, I was unable to print directly. So instead, I had to save as a pdf > save pdf to iPhoto and then print the image as a photo (instead of a card).

Efficient page size for print and SWF doc?

I have to create an AR for a client who wishes to have it saved out as a SWF file for online usage, in addition to the printed books. I'm just wondering if there's a more efficient page size, other than 8 1/2 x 11", that would work better for online. As it is, I find the 8 1/2 x 11 size is a bit difficult to turn the pages in SWF. Comments please?

You are right and wrong. It stems from terminology and taking this a bit literally. Yes, margins do not print. However, they do print. Typically you set margins as "guides" for page layout and it ends there. If, you have elements that print in the margin areas, then they ( the elements ) will print. Let's say you have a business card layout that equal 2"h x 3.5" w ( horizontal ). You can set a margin of .25" all the way around the card as a guide. Now you apply a background bleed color of 100% Black at 2.25"h x 3.75"w ( 1/8" bleed all the way around ). Eventhough you have a margin of .25", the Black will print entirely including the bleed. Now, Page Margins are different. Most desktop printers do not include bleed in an 8.5" x 11" page size. For instance, my inkjet printer has non-printable areas or page margins that do not print. They equal something like .139" top, left, and right with a bottom margin of .6". Unless your printer has an option for "borderless" printing, there is a non-printable margin in the Page Setup. This is different than layout margins which are printable and used as guides. So, if your desktop printer does not have "borderless" printable areas ( option found in Print > Page Setup ), you'd have to print your 8.5" x 11" layout on a larger page size and then trim it down later. Issue on borderless printing using android HP ePrint app with HP LaserJet Pro 200 color M251nw

I am trying to print a pdf document which is of A4 size (11.7 x 8.3 inches without any borders) from android tablet using HP ePrint app along with the printer HP Laserjet Pro 200 color M251nw. When it is printed on A4 sheet, it adds the border on all the sides around 12mm-left, 11mm-right, 8mm-top, 9.5mm-botton margins.
On the printer the firmware datecode shows 20121026, Also the ePrint app which I am using is latest and upto date.
Please let me know how to print the borderless print in A4 sheet.

Turning off the Wireless Direct on the LaserJet Pro 200 color M251nw should have disabled the SSID from broadcasting. Since disabling from the front display did not resolve, let us try from the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
To access the EWS you need to enter the I.P address for the M251nw into the address bar of your web browser. The I.P address can be collected by touching Setup ()> Reports> Network Summary.
Once in the EWS, click Network> Wireless Direct Setup> select Off and Apply.

Borderless Printing Help

I really need some borderless printing help. I finally figured out with my printer, that the bottom margin is ridiculously offset so I need to use borderless printing to prevent the bottom footer from being cut off (HP 2610 printer, margins being read are .07"-top, .13"-right&left, .56"-bottom).
I know there is a way to choose borderless from the page setup screen. And I tried looking in the system preferences to see if I could choose borderless as the default but there doesn't seem to be a way as far as I can see.
Does anybody know if there is a way to override the settings and make the borderless 8.5x11 the default paper size instead of the standard US letter?
BTW I am looking to do this on a system-wide basis since multiple programs have this problem, but if anyone knows of ways to do this specifically in Pages or Word that would be helpful too.

Got it to work in MS Word 2004. Any idea of how to get it to save in Pages 2? I choose to Save As Default, but it keeps reverting back when I open a new document.

Borderless printing - Canon Pixma mini 320

Printing from Aperture2.1 to my Canon Pixma mini 32 printer, I am unable to do a borderless 4 by 6 print. When using "Print Image" 4" * 6" (borderless) was selected, Layout options set to "scale to 4 * 6). No borderless printing is achieved.
Canon says that this is an Aperture problem.
Any suggestions?

The article is from 2005, by the way. I wonder why Apple doesn't seem to want to fix this obvious bug? Why should it matter in which order the settings are made? Apple usually understands user-friendly design, but maybe they should give their Aperture team an extra training course on that subject...

Canon MP800R | Borderless Print Conundrum

I have designed a A3 borderless poster in Pages (latest version). When I scale print to A4 borderless on MP800R it reduces it but with a margin (and not due to the border setting in the print options). Not only does it print with a margin it trucates the right of the poster off - not a lot but enoigh to annoy).
To get round this I set the Pages page setting to A4 Borderless and reduced the poster by 70.9% to get it to fit. The problem now is that although the A3 poster will print as an A4 borderless it won't let me set the print quality to anything ovedr than "normal" setting on the "Details" slider in the print settings box. (After much experimenting it appears that plain paper on borderless setting won't let you chose to fine print - presumably to stop saturation of 80gsm type paper - I'm using 160gsm). It also still truncates - a little - the right side.
None of this happens on my work Epson Stylus Photo 1290. It reduces effotlessly within Pages using the normal method for doing so.
A last thing - when previewing the print document to be printed the preview does not show that it is going to print with margins or truncated - in fact it looks perfect in preview.
Any ideas? I've got a working work around but it's long winded. Export to PDF, open in Acrobat and print to printer margin on A4 and except a white border. At least all the image is there.

Since no one seems to jumping at your posting I thought I'd have a go.
I don't have the MP800R or the latest Pages, but I do have a Canon iP5200R and Pages 1.0 that came with iWork 05. And I can recreate some of your problem...
I created an A3 page then as you say set the Page Setup to A4 Borderless and I tried a scale of 80%. I then set the Borderless Printing slider to 3/4 and found I could print on A4 full bleed with a small amount of cropping on the RH side. Changing the scaling and bleed setting helped a little, but I only got the perfect output when my original Page Setup was A4 Borderless and 100% scaling. In contrast, I made a similar layout in InDesign CS2 and it worked fine. Me thinks that Pages isn't a serious publication app. More like the dreaded MS Publisher
I also found that I don't have the restriction in Quality & Media when using plain paper, but that is most likely due to a difference in the driver.

Missing borderless print option on Epson 2200 since Leopard upgrade

Since upgrading to Leopard, I no longer fine an Epson borderless print option when I go to select printers. I have an Epson 2200 and am using with Photoshop CS. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Are you using the Epson driver, as opposed to the Gutenprint driver? I am using the Epson SP 2200 driver on 10.5.3 and can see and print with the borderless options in Photoshop. In the Print Dialog in the Paper Size menu, I see the following:
US Letter
US Letter (Standard - Minimize Margins)
US Letter (Sheet Feeder - Borderless)
US Letter (Roll Paper)
US Letter (Roll Paper - Borderless)

Borderless Printing issues with HP Officejet 4500

I have created a document using Microsoft word 2007 and am having trouble printing this document without borders. I have a HP Officejet 4500 which does support borderless printing. I have gone into properties when getting ready to print and made sure to check the borderless box. I am still left with a small 1/8 inch border around the entire page. I tried the shortcuts and selected brochures with the same results. I also tried changing the settings through word. I went into page set up and made the margins "0.0" on both sides as well as the top and bottom of the page. It still prints with borders. What am I missing???? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Having the same issue. I tried to print boderless from many different programms and with all settings I could choose. I get out a full photo or document after maybe 20 prints. Everytime the printer wants to print at least 2 pages, stops printing after 10-50% and restarts again.
I really would like to hear back from HP.

D7263. Wrong printout colors under Vista/Wrong borderless printing.

    Getting dull colors while printing under Windows Vista from Print Manager or any application (Photoshop CS3). Colors are as expected (ok) while I print those photos under XP virtual machine (from under Vista Ultimate).
    Another problem is stupid results with borderless printing.Though I prepare dimension of the photo to match paper size (lets say 4x6inch x 600dpi), using borderless printing option, I always get printouts cutted about 0,2 inch on EVERY side.
    I got strange result from HP online consulting in July or August: "We do not have correct driver for Windows Vista yes. That's why you have those problems. We expect new driver SOON."
    As the latest version of the Vista driver is 10.0 (02/2008) and I use it, I do not know how to use my Photosmart for photo printing under Vista...
    Any suggestions?

Now, all my printers ignore the page margin settings, always printing in the middle of a 11x8.5 when doing borderless printing. HP even had a statement in the documentation stating, "If you have problem printing from an application with borderless printing, print from one of the HP supplied applictions".
After uninstalling the HP driver, and installing a printer driver for a Brother 440 CN, I am still unable to print a borderless page using a page margin of 0, to either printer; the image still prints centered on a 8.5x11.
I believe that HP mucked with some settings in CUPS that their uninstaller didn't fix. Someone have an idea of a setting somewhere in CUPS printing system that might return my borderless printing back to the origin behavior?

Borderless Printing Problems - C309g-m

I have developed a problem when trying to create borderless prints with my C309g-m All-In-One. Recently I have begun to see a margin on the right side and bottom of prints that are supposed to be borderless. When I first set up the printer, borderless printing was as expected. It seems that after an update (as best I recall) the borderless prints began to appear with the white stripes (between 0.1 and 0.2 inches) as noted above. The white stripes occur whether printing 4x6 (my normal print size) or 8.5x11. (the border stripes appear slightly bigger on this size).
The stripes appear whether i print from Qimage or Photoshop so they do not appear to be specific to the software used. Qimage shows a fixed border of 0.0017" on the right and bottom with 0's for the left and top. Any clues as to what might have happened and how I can "fix" it to once again print borderless.

Hi folks,
I understand you are all experiencing a white border on the right and bottom of your prints when printing borderless.
The first thing I would suggest is for you to do a copy of a borderless photo to test the hardware. If the hardware prints with no issue then the issue is related to the computer, possibly the settings or the driver.
If the issue persists please post back with the following information.
Operating system and version. Mac or Windows.
Program you are printing from.

Borderless Printing broken in Pages 2013?

Hi Everyone,
I've been trying to print a borderless A4 document on my Canon ix6550 using the new version of Pages. This document printed fine on the previous version where all I needed to do was change the format to A4(borderless) in page setup.
Now there is ther option to change paper type in the Document panel of the inspector, which I've set to borderless. But page setup still shows the normal A4 size, after changing this to borderless and printing the white margins still show up! Going back to page setup shows that the page size has again reverted to normal A4.
This is driving me crazy, I've tried reseting the printing system and can print borderless documents from other apps so this must be a problem in Pages. Anyone know how to fix this?
If its a bug fix it please Apple!

Hey Guys!
So I found out how to print Borderless using Pages 13, Version 5.2!
When in the Print Window, make sure to have you "Paper Size" set to the size you need and Borderless in brackets. IE 5x7 (Borderless)
**IMPORTANT**
The most important step is to now select "Paper Handling", then enable "Scale to fit paper size" tick box. Next, select the paper size with Borderless again. IE 5x7 (Borderless)
Then change the Paper Handling heading to select "Borderless Printing". It should now be ungreyed and now slider should work.
Save as a Preset for each size you need Borderless for and you are now setup!
My printer is the Cannon MX880 and it worked after I did the **IMPORTANT** step.
I hope this works for you. I have also added Screen Shots to help.
