Bought and set new ringtone, but won't ring with anything except default

I've got an iPhone 3GS (only a few days old) and downloaded a ringtone from iTunes direct to the 'phone.
I set it as my main ringtone through Settings > Sounds > Ringtone. All seemed simple enough. Except when I then tested it, the default tone still rang. I tried changing the ringtone to one of the other iPhone core ones that are already on the 'phone, but found I couldn't change to any of these either...
I've synced the 'phone, I can select the ringtones on my 'phone and play them to test them, but I can't change my ringtone - at all. This is driving me insane.
Anybody have any ideas?

OK, I'm officially an idiot. I've been testing it by calling from my wife's 'phone. I've now just checked her contact record and at some point in the dim and distant past I've set a specific ringtone for her contact...
By resetting that to the default it's now using the correct ringtone... D'oh!

If there are multiple apps trying to download at once, only one can download at a time and the rest say "Waiting" until it is then their turn. Try this. Double tap the icon of the Waiting app, and it should resume the download.

Another thing to try - Turn the iPad Off & then back ON.
If that doesn't work:
• Log out of your iTunes store account. Go to Settings > Store > Sign Out Then press the Home button.
• Then press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously and don't release them when it brings up the Turn Off screen; keep holding them until the Apple logo appears.
• After restart, the Waiting should be gone.

You may be able to re-download the file like so:
First, delete the file. Then, in iTunes:
1. Go to "iTunes Store"
2. Click on "Purchased"
3. Find the file from there and click the cloud next to the file.

Did you follow this advice?
If your existing tones are not syncing properly to your iOS device then uncheck the option to Sync Tones from the Tones tab when the device is connected, sync the device, check the option and sync again.
Note that you should confirm that the tones are in the Tones section of your iTunes library and play within iTunes before attempting to sync them. Syncing may also be dependent upon iPhone model and iOS version.

No. If your MacBook has an Intel processor you can update to OSX 10.6.8 and then install the latest iTunes.
A 5G iPod with iOS 7 requires that if you have a Mac you have OSX 10.6.8 or later.

What version of iPhoto did you have and what version do you now have? Of the OS? If you are upgrading from iphoto '08 or earlier did you download and RUN the iphoto library upgrader?

Yes, contact the carrier the iPhone is locked to.
Only they can officially unlock the iPhone and if you qualify. No one else.

Do a Spotlight search. If you see it there, then it is probably hidden. Connect to iTunes and you should find it in a hidden screen--like 10 or 11. Just drag it back to a visible screen.

Unless your HP printer is an AirPrint-ready device, just connecting it to the USB port of the AirPort Express base station will not make it so.
On the other hand, connecting a non-AirPrint printer to the base station's USB port it can be shared out by the base station's print server. Please see the following Apple Support article for details.
