BPMN/XPDL vs BPEL for Orchestration

I have an ISV customer who is evaluating BPMN/XPDL vs BPEL for service orchestration. They understand the basic use case for each (BPMN/XPDL for human workflow design and automation; BPEL for service orchestration and execution). Their question is: why can't they just BPMN/XPDL for both?
XPDL will allow for service orchestration, and, to a degree, compensation handling. Why shoulkd their customers have to maintain two standards?
Any comments?

The primary purpose of BPMN spec is meant to have a standard visual notation for business process diagram that can be understood by both business users and IT users. and in my view, the purpose of XPDL now is primarily used to be a standard serialization (interchange) format for exchanging BPMN models. BPMN does have all properties needed for generating executable BPEL. But BPMN is a visual graphic flow language and is more expressible than BPEL - not all BPMN flows can be expressed in BPEL and the mapping is non trivial. Having an XML execution language using BPMN seems too much and would cause serious problems in terms of portablity.
If you are interested in knowing more about BPMN-BPEL mapping, you can take a look at business process modeling info from http://www.eclarus.com. It contains good information on BPMN and BPMN-BPEL mapping.

  • Waiting for Orchestration. What does this mean?

    I have an application being deployed to different AD sites.  I do not have my DPs for those sites set up yet, but I do have my MP which is also a DP set to a fallback DP.  I deploy this application and deployment status says Waiting for
    Orchestration.
    I have no idea what it means and can't find anything about it.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Sounds like you might have enabled "Agent extensions manage the deployment of applications and software updates" in Client Settings.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg682067.aspx
    From the online documentation:
    Enable this option only if one of the following conditions apply:
    You use a vendor solution that requires this setting to be enabled.
    You use the System Center 2012 Configuration Manager software development kit (SDK) to manage client agent notifications and the installation of applications and software updates.
    Warning:
    If you select this option when neither of these conditions apply, software updates and required applications will not install on clients.

  • Plug Ins for Orchestra work

    What are the plug-ins you find work best for orchestra production (I use VSL), and do you tweak the standard settings on them to produce the most realistic sound?

    Now lets go back to your question,
    1) you have a good arrangement, that means the parts do complement well
    2) you have good samples (VSL)
    3) you play the parts on your keyboard - not mechanically, not quantized.
    first problem: you play all parts by yourself, no interaction between the musicians. In an orchestra (at this point) the musicians would try to get a "tutti" sound, each instrument has to "fit in the mix". Thats difficult, when you have to do it part by part.
    4) Your parts are all recorded. Now you will pan the parts like an orchestra is positioned.
    5) Creation of sound. Lets see how an orchestra is recorded normally. You would use a pair of omnidirectional microphones. Recording in AB which produces many phase differences. This is how the room will be created. Rarely you will see an AB-recording.
    You would use spot microphones for some groups and solo instruments of the orchestra. These spot microphones will be added to the AB-main-microphone, panned like you hear the instruments on the AB-Mics.
    To create a realistic sound with virtual orchestra you first will have to create that tutti room sound with a good true stereo reverb. Pan your sound sources like a real orchestra and add some reverb.
    In a real orchestra recording, the spot microphones would bring out some details of specific instruments and bring the solo instruments to the front.
    I would suggest to use the sends of the instruments-channels to add some reverb. Less reverb for the instruments in the front, more reverb for the instruments in the back. But reverb is not the whole thing. Room is created by volume and phase differences. If you want your trumpet to be placed to the right you should not only pan it to the right but also use a sample delay to delay the left channel of the trumpet by a few milliseconds. This will sound much more realistic than just panning (which only adjusts the volume of the right and left channel).
    The ear is very sensitive for phase differences.
    And its even more complex since orchestra recordings are normally done with a lot of spot microphones, so there will be a lot of phase differences (which sometimes also may be a problem).
    A sound engineer who is recording classical music would never use compression or Eq. He would choose the best microphone for each instrument. Compression kills the dynamics, although you will hear some compression of orchestra tracks in the cinema.
    You may use some eq anyway. In an orchestra a musician will hear which frequencies and sound is needed and adapt the sound and volume. When you play all instruments by your own you will have to do some fine tuning. If there are instruments that kill each other with the same frequencies you may clean the picture with eqs.
    Hope that helps,
    Eddie

  • Is SQL Server Engine failover service spported for Orchestrator databases?

    Hi there,
    I have the following question:
    Is SQL Server Engine failover service spported for Orchestrator 2012 R2 databases?
    Thanx in advance.
    Regards,
    Chris

    Hi,
    yes, the issue that Orchestrator does not reconnect when the SQL server is restarted is has been fixed in System Center 2012 Orchestrator Service Pack 1 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2768366)
    Orchestrator requires "only "the basic SQL Server features found in the Database Engine Service. No additional features are required.

  • VSTi plug-ins for orchestral/string sounds?

    I see the 3 instruments that come with the Adobe Audition 3.0 when you first install it. I'm trying find a high quality VSTi plug-in for orchestral string sounds that is supported by Adobe Audition 3.0. There seem to be a lot of websites that offer free plug-ins, but I am not sure where to start. Does anyone have experience playing MIDI files with orchestral VSTi plug-ins?
    Thanks!

    It's easy (if the VSTi 2.0 plugin you find works with Audition 3). Most only require you to copy the VSTi plugin.dll to the Audition VTSi plugin's directory and then rescan the plugins.
    Take a look at www.gersic.com to see hundreds of free VST plugins and free VSTi plugins. A few are orchestral, just search the web page.

  • Would Macbook pro as fast as the G5s for orchestral work?

    I have been seeing the benchmark results and tested on my imac. My imac gives about 16 tracks with the Benchmark 2 song. Is Macbook pro fast enough for orchestral work like the G5s?

    So, it seems Macbook will certainly work for
    Orchestral work if it is comparable to a G5 Quad!
    Wow! That's so cool!
    Keep in mind:
    Logic is not currently optimized to use all 4 CPU's on the Quad at maximum capacity. The comparison is based on Logic's current version. A future optimized version will most likely perform considerably better.

  • BPEL for e-Commerce B2B applications

    Dear All,
    I am currently doing a feasibility study for the development of an enterprise B2B e-commerce application using the ebXML infrastructure. One of the issues I am pursuing is the currently available in the industry to support the components defined in the ebXML specifications (OASIS). The launch of Oracle BPEL is an attractive issue since I plan to use Oracle development tools /database for my project, however it is no clear how the standards in the two areas are able to interoperate with each other. I have specifically two areas I would like to clarify as follows:
    1. In the "2-min tour" on the OTN BPEL web site, this states that the this product can support customized messaging formats / protocolls, does this also hold true for the ebXML MS messaging service based on SOAP?
    2. More Importantly, how does the BPEL orchestration relate to the ebXML BPSS collaboration? Can these be layered, i.e. can the BPSS specification be used to generate an instance for the BPEL specification (XML => XML transformation).
    One reason for my interest in this are is that I plan to develop a commercial application from existing "industry standard" tools, an although the ebXML BPSS is more suited to the B2B infrastructure, I have the impression from the marketing channels that the major software companies favour more the BPEL initiative perhaps.
    Sincerely,
    Jesmond

    Thank you for your reply,...Well, that was a bit shorter that I had expected!
    Perhaps I was not clear in my enquiry:
    In the "2-minute Product Tour" "step 6" on the OTN BPEL product web site it states that Oracle BPEL is "extensible" to different messaging products / protocols. ebXML MS is a SOAP based protocol, so according to this claim this should be supported?
    In my other enquiry, I am aware that ebXML BP (BPSS) is a collaboration protocol specification whereas BPEL is an orchestration WSDL, however since Oracle has members/ representatives in some of the ebXML initiatives at OASIS, I wondered if there is an initiative in Oracle to facilitate (not actually releasing a product) or provide guidelines how these could be integrated using Oracle business process tools. Perhaps this might be a longer term strategy? (p.s. If no plans present,....I wonder why Oracle have members at OASIS TC then!)
    Best regards,
    Jesmond

  • Importing BPMN and Generating BPEL

    Hi,
    I have been doing some preliminary research into BPA's abilities and have gone through most of the documenation available through Oracle's website. I have not found explicit answers to the following so I appreciatte any insight you can offer. I am looking to generate BPMN compliant business processes using an external tool. I want to then use BPA to possibly import these processes and then generate an executable process in BPEL. If the external tool produces pure BPMN compliant models will this be possible in BPA?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
    another approach is the transformation of the BPMN coming from Visio into a model that can be understood by the BPA suite. We have a tool for this conversion. With a simple mapping functionality you can map any Visio output to BPA Suite compatible diagrams (based on the 116 diagram types defined by the IDS), import them into BPA and generate BPEL out of it.
    If you need more information do not hesitate to contact me

  • Adding new element to BPEL for use in PL SQL type, has binding errors

    Figured I might as well post this here since I haven't gotten a single reply in 3 days anywhere else :/
    I have a BPEL service that calls a PL SQL procedure. I have added a new element to the BPEL called quote_cart_line.
    All I had to the BPEL to accomplish this was edit 3 files -
    Async_Invoke_Import_Model.xsd (Source)
    <element name="orig_sys_line_ref" type="integer" minOccurs="1" nillable="true"/>
           <element name="quote_cart_line" minOccurs="1" nillable="true" type="integer"/>
          </sequence>
    .....APPS_NI_MODEL_IMPORT_UTIL_IMPORT_SELECTIONS.xsd (Target)
    <element name="ORIG_SYS_LINE_REF" type="decimal" db:type="NUMBER" minOccurs="0" nillable="true"/>
             <element name="QUOTE_CART_LINE" type="decimal" db:type="NUMBER" minOccurs="0" nillable="true"/>
          </sequence>
    .....Transform_NIE_Inputs.xsl (Transforming from Source to Target)
    <ns1:orig_sys_line_ref>
              <xsl:value-of select="/ns1:Async_Invoke_Import_ModelProcessRequest/ns1:import_line/ns1:orig_sys_line_ref"/>
            </ns1:orig_sys_line_ref>
            <ns1:quote_cart_line>
              <xsl:value-of select="/ns1:Async_Invoke_Import_ModelProcessRequest/ns1:import_line/ns1:quote_cart_line"/>
            </ns1:quote_cart_line>
          </ns1:import_line>
    .....I have done this to two other BPELs and they work fine. (1st BPEL calls the second BPEL passing this new element, which then passes it to this BPEL I am having trouble with, which then should be binding it to a PL SQL type)
    So this BPEL calls a PL SQL procedure, binding the elements from the BPEL to a PL SQL type (ni_model_import_line). So I edited the PL SQL type to accept this new parameter:
    orig_sys_header_ref       NUMBER,
           quote_cart_line           NUMBER,
           CONSTRUCTOR FUNCTION ni_model_import_line(p_part_number                IN VARCHAR2,

    BEGIN
       quote_cart_line := p_quote_cart_line;
    END add_quote_cart_line;
    END;
    .....I invoke all of this, and the new element gets populated in 3 different BPELs, including this one I explained here. But when it comes time to call the PL SQL I am now getting an error:

  • Manual creation of CONTRL message in BPEL for EDIFACT message

    Hi All,
    There is a requirement in which, a B2B EDI XML message is consumed by BPEL process and some business rules are applied on the EDI XML message to check if the destination and dispatcher countries are valid. At this point if there is any error, then i need to generate a CONTRL XML message, pass it back to B2B to generate CONTRL EDI message to be sent back to client.
    How can I acheive this? I am facing problem during transformation of D96B to CONTRL message, like populating UCS segment and UCD segment in CONTRL message.
    Can anyone pls help? Is there any easy way to implement this, like calling Business rules from B2B etc. ?
    Regards
    Aparna

    Aparna,
    CONTROL xml is used for functional ACK, which is used for checking the syntactical correctness of the payload.
    But in this case, it is a data validation
    You may need to use APERAK message for the same.

  • Oracle Content Services + BPEL for Human Workflow

    Greetings,
    I'm new to Oracle Collaboration Suite and BPEL. I'm starting to work with this technologies.
    My goal is to develop some custom human workflow using Oracle Content Services 10.1.2.3.0 and BPEL.
    Regarding software versions, some doubts arise ... I'm using Collaboration Suite 10.1.2.
    - Which version of SOA Suite (10.1.2 or 10.1.3.1) and BPEL are recomended to work with content services 10.1.2.3.0 ?
    Thanks,

    The certified version for Content DB/Content Services 10.1.2.3 is 10.1.2 of BPEL.

    we have tried out SyncMaxWaitTime Property in BPEL configurations through SOA administration menu of EM. Also tried by increasing JTA timeout seconds in Service--JTA @ weblogic console.
    Any suggestion or pointers..

    Hi,
    Could help set the following...
    The timeouts should be configured based on the below condition
    SyncMaxWaitTime < BPEL EJB's transaction timeout < Global Transaction Timeout
    The values could be: SyncMaxWaitTime (3600) ; BPEL EJB's transaction timeout (3600); Global Transaction Timeout JTA (7200)
    Setting the SyncMaxWaitTime :
    This is the maximum time a synchronous BPEL process waits before it times out to get the response from another BPEL or a web service
    Login to EM console
    Expand SOA and right click on "soa-infra"
    From context menu, select SOA Administration –> BPEL properties
    Click on "More BPEL Configuration properties"
    Enter the appropriate value for the SyncMaxWaitTime
    Setting the global transaction timeout at Weblogic Domain Level:
    This property controls the transaction timeout seconds for active transactions. If the transaction is still in the "active" state after this time, it is automatically rolled back.
    Log into Oracle Weblogic Administration Console.
    Click Services -> JTA.
    Change the value of Timeout Seconds to the required value (the default is 30)
    Click Save.
    Restart Oracle Weblogic Server.
    Overriding the transaction timeout setting for BPEL EJB's:
    The timeout properties for the EJB's control the particular timeout setting for the SOA application, overriding the global setting specified by the JTA timeout
    Log into Oracle Weblogic Administration Console.
    Click Deployments.
    Expand soa-infra -> EJBs.
    Click on the configuration tab for the timeout setting for each of EJB’s listed below and the change the time out values as required.
    Following EJBs need to be updated:

    BPELFinderBean
    BPELInstanceManagerBean
    BPELProcessManagerBean

    Click Save.
    Restart Oracle Weblogic Server.
    I hope you find it useful!

  • SCCM 2012 R2 IP for Orchestrator 2012

    Hi,
    We have Orchestrator 2012 (7.0.1154.0) installed, and I would like to connect it to our SCCM 2012 R2 (5.0.7958.1303) installation with an integration pack.
    Does anyone know if I can connect a non-R2 Orchestrator to an R2 SCCM and if so, which IP I should use.
    I wish I could upgrade my SC'Orch to R2 but sadly we have some old SharePoint 2007 third-party IP's which do not work with R2, so I don't think that is an option.
    Your advice will be greatly appreciated.

  • BPEL for Mac OS X

    Do you plan on releasing a version of your free BPEL Process Manager for Mac OS X?

    The BPEL engine is not free - it costs money.
    The BPEL designer is free and is part of JDeveloper and JDeveloper works on Mac.
    The tricky part is that in the 10.1.2 release of BPEL you can't install just a BPEL extension to JDeveloper you have to install the whole beast - and the packaging of the whole beast doesn't come for Mac.
    In 10.1.3.1 BPEL is an extension that you can install onto JDeveloper so hopefully also on Mac.
