When I reset the brightness in system pref it reverts to full bright on restart. tried resetting the PRAM but it did't help. Any ideas?

While people here will surely help, you may do better posting this on the Intel iMac board, since this is the iMac G5 board.

  • Display screen keeps resetting every 5 miutes

Our business computer is an Imac G5 10.4.11 Tiger. The display screen keeps resetting every three minutes. It just flashes and resets itself. I don't loose anything but it's very annoying. I've reset the pram & nvram with no luck. I've also done all the repairs off the start up disk. Any thoughts?

    Hey Michael,
I brought my Imac up to the Apple Store where we purchased it from. They had Friday & Saturday and called Sunday saying it was done. My wife brought it home and we plugged it in only to find it's still has the same problem. My wife said they went through the entire machine from top to bottom.
I called the store today and had to schedule my complaint with a service tech. I brought the machine up there myself and went through the steps (It kind of scares me when I know more than the kid helping me). I understand they have to learn somehow, I own a door & window company and totally see things from both sides. I asked for a supervisor, explaining I wasn't upset with the other staff person, I was just upset with the computer. I explained to them that I had removed the cover and looked at the capacitors with three of them bulging. I explained I had posted here for some answers and that I'd researched the issue. They told me all about the problems they had with this year and the capacitor issues were only covered for a three year period (I happened to be six months late) They then proceeded to tell me that it would cost me $900.00 to fix. I had to take a deep breath and keep my composure after that one.
My biggest complaint is they had problems with the machines logic board capacitors, but never told us it may become an issue. No letter or even the courtesy of telling us when it was serviced. I own a brand new 20" Imac, the 2005 Imac 20" (problem child), and around 10 other Imac's dating back to 2003, 4 Ipod Touch's, and 4 Iphones. Needless to say I have invested a large sum of money in Apple products. These are the only machines I've ever had since I can remember and I'll always support Apple products. It just really ****** me off when they had my machine in for power supply repairs a couple times and never said a thing to us about possible problems down the road. Now they want me to sack up $900.00 for repairs when I can get a new one for around $1200.00.
I know that these issues arise in every kind of industry. I deal with them all the time, but if I know there's a flaw that will kick my rear end down the road, I''l head it off as fast as I can to avoid angry customers. I also don't have the volume Apple has when it comes to sales, so my issues really have no validity, they have to cut it off somewhere. Is there any other route I can take to try and get this $2600.00 computer fixed without kicking my rear?
By the way, thanks for answering questions, I do it on a couple boards in my industry. I know how people beat you up on certain issues without knowing your doing it for free. I know where your coming from and want to say Thank You for your time!!!

    Hello @DesCherryBomb,
I understand that you are having issues with your HP 2310m monitor going blank and/or flickering. I am providing you with some steps you can try below:
Step 1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the monitor and the wall
Step 2. Hold the power button down for at least one minute
Step 3. Plug the power cord back into the monitor and then into the wall outlet (not a power bar or surge protector)
Step 4. Press the Menu button on the monitor
Step 5. Navigate to the Factory Reset option and select it
If the above steps did not resolve your issue you can try the monitor on a computer or other device to see if the issue persists. Please call our technical support at 800-474-6836. • New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff (continued)

This thread is a continuation of [New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=22 12682]. The thread was becoming too long and was causing some browsers to time out. The older thread has been locked.

    Hi Brett L,
thank you for the coordination of this helpful thread. Are you Apple? If yes, please allow me to ask you three questions:
    1) The Display Firmware stopped for over 90% the flicker issue, but what has this Firmware changed exactly?
    2) Is Apple preparing a fix for the yellow tinge?
    3) When will it be save to buy a new iMac?
    Thank you for your efforts.
    Hello Citrus.
    Excellent questions.
I hope that Apple will authorize Brett L. to provide us with some clear, honest answers to them . . . although, as I pointed out before, it would seem by the latest messages that have been posted in this thread -- that is, the *original thread* -- that through their actions, Apple has already provided us with their answer -- and solution -- to the yellow tinge issue; and that is the replacement of the LCD panel.
As to what the most recent display firmware update did, I am doubtful that Apple will allow Brett to reveal that kind of information, but we can be hopeful.
As far as when it will be safe to purchase a new iMac, I seriously doubt that Apple will say anything which would suggest that it is not safe to purchase a new iMac now. What company is going to say "Don't buy our product now. It's not safe"?
For my part, I have now contacted Apple regarding the issues that I am having with my 27" iMac, and I will wait over the next few days to see how things play out. Based on the testimonies of others here, I don't expect Apple to disappoint. I have the confidence that they want to leave me a satisfied customer who will continue to purchase their products in the future.

Never mind, mine started working today.  Must have been with iCloud because I didn't do anything differently. Good luck with yours.  Might want to just try it again.

  • New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:
Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.
Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.
Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjOxlxVz5Os
    http://gallery.me.com/larzy#100025
Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

I received my 27" iMac three days ago and ever since i got it out of the box and turned it on it has done the same as the video shows.
Last night i watched a 30 min programme on BBC iPlayer and the 2-3 inch white lines kept popping up every few seconds horizontally across the screen. The screen also went black momenterally on 6 occasions.
I cannot believe after three days that this problem is so bad. I spome with Apple this morning on the Apple Care line and they told me to:
    1. Shut down and take out power cord for 20 secs then turn back on.
    2. Shut Down and then hold down "D" when turning back on which performed a hardware test...
    Both had no effect.
Luckilly i am still within the 14 days of recieving my iMac and they are sending out a replacement but i am worried that this machine will have the same problems...
Is anyone happy with theres and is anyone not experiencing this problem... There seems to be a big issue here???

  • Using Time Machine to migrate to a new iMac, can I keep my old backups?

I've done a lot of searching on this and I'm having trouble finding an answer. I just got a new iMac to replace my existing one. I know the process of migrating either Mac-to-Mac or from my TM backup is straightforward and fairly simple. I'm just trying to figure out if, after migrating all my data to my new Mac, what will happen to my Time Machine disk. Will it want to re-baseline the new Mac and erase my historic backup data? Or will I still have access to the older incremental backups?
    Thanks,
    Matt

If you use either Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to transfer your stuff, you'll be offered a choice.  See #B5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • New iMac 27" screen issues!!!

Does anyone experiences this situation on their iMac with new "Screen LaminationProcess" ?
After leaving a white image still for couple minutes on the screen (Example: Web Site), a sort of halo remains.... This is noticeable when I working on applications with gray GUI's like Adobe Photoshop, Aperture, iMovie... pretty much any application.
I am kind of upset because the computer is only 1 month old and I just noticed this problem. Besides, there are some awkward brighter spots on the edges of the display… it seems like there is a leak of light from the inside out. That cannot be shown on the screen shots but they are bery anoying when watching a movie... ;(

You really should call AppleCare first.  Let them be aware of the problems you are having.  You will get a case number.  Keep it in a safe place.  It just may come in handy if the exact same problems crop up in the future after your warranty runs out.

  • New iMac open and keeping it (Reference: "To open or not to open")

Well after reading quite a few posts on the iMac display's. I decided to give this one a try. (see my initial post on "to open or not to open").
I have to say that the glossy screen is well... GLOSSY!! Love the keyboard and the iMac is quite pleasing to the eye with the glass and aluminum combination. I can't see any variation in the color, nor can I see a differnece from side to side or top to bottom. This one is a keeper.

  • Brand new imac flash player keeps freezing in webchat sites

hello;-) to start, i did read some other posts on this subject however i wasnt sure if it would be the same for me as i am running a mac, and the responses i saw were for pc's. my problem is that my camera will freeze up in some sites that require a flash cam and in others it does not. the sites that it does freeze in, i used to be able to acces using my cam. i get to the point where the adobe box pops up askin if i will allow the site access to my cam, and from there im stuck!!! sometimes the whole page freezes, sometimes the background remains active but the adobe box is stuck, wont respond, wont acces the cam-and i have to reload the page anyways. once the adobe box pops up, if i right-click the mouse and go to settings, the adobe box has  options to "always allow or deny" whatever site i am on, lets say chatroullete, and it has already selected deny (though i never told it to) and since its frozen (despite the fact it let me view this new 'page') i still cant change it to allow. why is it workin in some sites and not others? and why has it stopped working in sites it previously worked in? why is the little adobe box frozen yet active in those sites, i can see dif pg's of the adobe box but not modify settings?i figure if it was completly frozen it wouldnt even let me view the settings pg of the adobe box... my imac is less than two months old, running osx , and i use firefox....any help would be appreciated as i worry the problem will just get worse untill i cant use my cam online!!!;-(((( booohooo!

Hi, here is the link for Global Settings. I'd read and apply any settings you want from there instead of individual websites.
    http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager02.htm l
Sometimes the websites themselves are having problems. If they have a FAQ section or system requirements, you may want to refer to them also.

My new Mac Mail is losing the ability to send emails periodically. It's running on 10.6.7 /new iMac. I can reset the account by going into Prefs, then first deleting the account and then adding a new SMTP account back. Then sending emails works for a while, until the next time. What's happening?

Ah! Unfortunately, I'm on a company computer and can't just try these things myself. If that's the issue, I can ask our admins and they'll do it, but I want to make sure I've exhausted anything that could be a small fix.
Is that a shot in the dark, or are you thinking there's a reason a clean install is the solution? Thanks for the help.
