Broken aliases in mountain lion

I'm using 10.8.1 on a 15-inch MBP. Recently, I've been getting several repeatedly broken Aliases of folder on my desktop. My process is to create the folders on my local HD and then use the Finder option by right-clicking to Create Alias. I then move the Alias folder to the desktop and delete the word Alias. This has worked for me for years, but suddenly it's problematic on recently created folders. Even after I've "Fixed Alias". Has anyone had this experience?

This is a bit late this. I had similar problems, looked for an answer, and couldn't find one.
So I wrote a script that will do it as follows:
Given an alias directory, and a "target files" directory:
- Test files names for a trailing "alias" and test files to see if they are symbolic links.
- If so, search for filenames in the target directory tree matching the root of the alias or link name
- If found: replace the broken alias or link with a new symbolic link.
That works for me but it's not a very nice solution:
1) It doesn't use a good test for aliases, which is slightly dangerous but not very: It'll fail in the unlikely case a files which is not an alias finishes with " alias", or if an alias has had the trailing " alias" removed.
2) It doesn't check for multiple file matches, and will link to the first it finds. (or link to all of them in turn, over-writing, I can't remember).
3) most importantly: It removes all aliases and replaces them with symbolic links which isn't great. Aliases supposedly have greater flexibility than links which explains why they are ten times the size.
Links are enough for me - I'm just posting this as an indication of what can be done, without including my inelegant script.
Finally, a good place to look to learn how to do a better job is this person I came across:
http://sveinbjorn.org/osxutils_docs
This Sveinbjorn has shared this utility "mkalias" which shows how to make aliases.
From there, it's probably not hard to make a proper applescript "alias" test in place of my stupid filenamename method, and test separately for aliases and links to avoid the "all links" problem.
And finally a little test for multiple matches when searching for the target would be nice.
Good luck.
I myself will probably stick to links, too lazy.

  • Mountain Lion, Perian and Quicktime 7.6.6 - no audio

    I used to play and burn .AVI files with Quicktime, Mac OSX Lion and Perian.  But with Mountain Lion, its all broken now !
    I have installed Quicktime Player 7.6.6 (in the Utilties folder) and Perian - and I can now get video with an .AVI file, but no audio. Any solutions or suggestions to get my audio back? Has it got something to do a wrong plug-in or something. Or will is just stay broken because of Mountain Lion?
    Thanks, Fox

    I read that Quicktime Pro can play 'some' .AVI files - do you think it might be worth a shot for me to upgrade to the QT Pro version?
    Not if you are only interested in playback issues. QT 7 Pro does not add any new codecs—just allows you to access conversion and editing feature, many of which are already available via MPEG Streamclip or GarageBand. On the other hand, if you want to edite file content at the track level or composite various types of content, then purchasing a "Pro" key is an inexpensive way to add such editing features as long as you know how to use them.
    Thanks for your reply Jon, but I'm not svavy enough to answer the "container" info you are asking about, and also it was a file passed onto to me sometime ago.
    In most cases, the file extension tells you what kind of a file container the data is contained in. In the case of AVI, it means the data is interleaved to maintain audio/video synchronization. Unfortunately, there are dozens of audio and dozens of video codecs that can be used in the container in hundreds of different combinations. Basically, in order to play a AVI file, your system must be configured with the same codecs used to create the original file. In addition, the latest versions of the QT X player must be programmed to expect these codec combinations in the container used. For example, the QT X player can normally play MPEG-2/AC3 files in an MPEG, MPG, or TS container, but will refuse to play the same content if it is in a VOB fil container.
    Thus, one of the first steps in playing AVI content is to determine what audio and video codecs were used to create the AVI file. Then you must determine if the required codecs are, in fact, installed on your system. Even then, the file may only be playable in one or the other QT players compatible with your current OS. If a file will open in the QT X or QT 7 players, then all you need to do is open the "Inspector" window to determine which audio and/or video codecs were used to create your AVI file. And, if a file will not open in one of the QT players, then you usually open the Finder "Info" window to learn more about the codecs. Other options for learning more about a file that will not open in QT players would be to open the file in a third-party media player that has its own codec support embedded in the app itself. The free VLC media player is often recommended here. Another option would be to use a dedicated app to analyze file content. One such app would be the free MediaInfo app.
    Once you know what codecs were used to create the AVI and determine that playback support is not available on your system, you can then try performing a Google search to see if the missing codec is even available for the Mac platform. All will not be available. Basically, AVI is a "legacy" file first introduced by Microsoft in November of 1992—two decades ago. Unfortunately, many of the most common codecs used with this file container are also "legacy" compression formats which are gradually being phased out under QT X. Thus, you may or may not be able to locate, download, and install the required codec for QT playback.
    In addition, the AVI file container is showing its age due limitations on the data that can be used in it. While patches and fixes have been used to delay the demise of this file container, it is getting harder and harder for players to maintain total and reliable compatibility with latest media compression formats which have evolved/changed over the last decade or more modern file containers specifically designed to support these changes. The main problem here is that the AVI file container has become so popular by PC/Windows users that most now resist any change which, in turn, perpetuates the use of this outdated file type still further without good reason.
    I can say that the file would not play using Lion and Quicktime until I installed Perian, and thereafter it played on my iMac (in Quicktime player and MPEG Streamclip) and burned with iDVD normally. But when I upgraded to Mountain Lion - it all went south again!  I've installed an older version of Quicktime player (7.6.6) into Utilities folder and re-istalled Perian - and I only get video without audio.
    QT 7 v7.6.6 is the only classic version of the QT player that is compatible with Mountain Lion, Lion, and current version of Snow Leopard OS. If the audio was supported under Lion, then chances are good that it should still be compatible under Mountain Lion assuming the proper support is available. Reccomend you either post the "Inspector" window information or post a sample file for examination on my Mountain Lion iMac system.

    I can... you cannot. I'm not sure why. It will not work on an app icon.
    Are you sure you're doing this on a Folder?
    Perhaps it is a function of Finder. You can try deleting Finder prefs to default.
    Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences folder and trash these files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
    Then, restart, or log out and in again.
    (You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

    HI,
    If you have any sort of Back up such as a Time Machine one you could "restore" it to the Applications folder if you know which date it last worked.
    Other than that it is the Mountain Lion Restore process (Restart the Computer holding CMD and R)

HELP and i cannot return to my desktop with the old sofware so i cant use my computer normaly

    This error means that your hard drive is badly corrupt and cannot be repaired by Disk Utility. Since you say you don't have backups, this is very bad news. You may already have lost data irrevocably.
    First order of business needs to be backing up whatever you can, but this may be difficult to do if the machine won't start up any more. See step 1 of the following post:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/21614450#21614450
    Once you have backed up your data, you can address the other issues.

  • IMessage on Mountain Lion sending broken links to iOS

    OS 10.8.4 iMessage (Jabber Account [Gmail?]) is not sending links to iOS correctly. They are a long mangled mess that the recipient cannot click on. I have tried using URL shortening services but the same think occurs. The link is repeated about 15 times and broken. I receive links from iOS iMessage perfeclty fine. Any ideas?

    Hi,
    There seems to be some confusion here.
    A Jabber account in Messages cannot send to iMessages contacts.
    Do you mean that your Apple ID used in Messages for your iMessages account is actually a Google email ?
    I typed a piece of text (two words) and then highlighted them and used the CMD + k key option in the Edit Menu to add a link.
    A dialogue box pops up and you can add the Link and the two words become a Link.
    I then sent it to my iPhone (or at least tried to)
    The actual iMessages appeared as a synced Message as well in the Mac Messages app main window as being sent back from the iPhone.
    On the iPhone itself it only appeared as plain text.
    For me sending a link as Plain text arrives as a link at the iPhone.
    This link worked despite being long and forced over three lines of text on the iPhone.
    You could of course be using  Google Login on a Browser on the iOS devices and chatting that way
    You could have found a Jabber app for the iPhone and be using that.
    In both these cases you would be sending from the Google Account in Messages.

  • I recently downloaded is x mountain lion and while it finished it erased all my data, some of which I need. When using disk utility I found my old data but it says corrupted. I can't repair and while restoring the error code 32 Broken Pipe appears. Help?

    My data I need is on my computer but it needs to be repaired but can't and when I try to restore it/back it up it ends abruptly with error code 32 broken pipe.
    It was damaged while installing os x mountain lion and I found my data on disk repair (utility)

    Sounds like your hard drive is badly corrupted, likely due to problems that were already there when you started trying to install Mountain Lion. The problem is, if you don't have any backups already, you may not be able to recover all your data from this state. Do you have backups of that data already?
    If not, I assume when you say that "it needs to be repaired but can't," you mean that Disk Utility tells you there is a problem with the disk, but that it is unable to repair it? If so, you can try repairing the drive using DiskWarrior, which can repair problems that Disk Utility cannot. That may give you access to your data again, but may not.
    Also, it's important to understand that if your data is not backed up, everything you do with the computer runs the risk of overwriting or corrupting that data. You may want to go straight to trying to recover your data. See Recovering deleted files.
    Regarding the error code, if you're trying to back up the drive using Disk Utility's Restore tab, note that that is often not successful when the drive you're trying to back up is corrupt.
    Once the situation is resolved - either because you have backups, are able to recover your data files or are forced to accept that they are gone permanently - you will need to erase the hard drive and reinstall the system and all your apps from scratch.

  • Notes broken in Mountain Lion?

    After upgrading to Mountain Lion, my notes synced via my IMAP mail account are not showing up in the new Notes app.
    On the left side of the Notes app, I see my IMAP account where my notes should reside, but it's empty, with none of my notes.
    I assume this is a new bug with the Notes app. If not, has anyone found a way to get their IMAP mail notes to show up in the new Notes app?

    Good day all,
    I had the similar issue. I did the following to recover my notes before the upgrade:
    You need to locate the StickiesDatabase under your Library folder.
    Once you have a copy of your StickiesDatabase under
    /Users/<insert_your_home_directory>/Library/StickiesDatabase
    Export stickies created by Stickies.app
    Install National Velocity (NV) - http://notational.net/ and start the application
    In Finder open your Library folder and locate StickiesDatabase
    Drag StickiesDatabase into the list of notes in NV main window
    After you are able to see your notes in NV, it is up to you how to transfer them to Apple Notes. You could export as HTML/RTF etc or copy paste manually...  I have decided to use NV from now on.
    The instructions above is from the following page:

  • Finder Search in Mountain Lion -- broken?

    Since upgrading to Mountain Lion yesterday, my Finder Search does not operate the way it used to and I'm not getting the right results anymore.  I have already forced Spotlight to reindex by adding the entire drive and a disk image file to Privacy, and then removing them from Privacy.  Reindexing took about 45 minutes, but now it says it is done reindexing.  I have these same two issues both before and after the reindex.
    If I have Finder displaying the files in the disk image and type a few letters for a filename (e.g., name matches great) in the search box, Finder Search cannot find the files in the disk image even though I can plainly see they are there.
    I have Finder pointing to the entire main drive.  I search for name matches quiz.  I get 10 results, including 3 in the RE Class folder, plus seven others.  But, if I point Finder to the RE Class folder on the main drive, and do the same search, it shows me those three files (as it should), and if I click the button above the search results for "This Mac" to expand the search, it displays only those same three in the RE Class folder, and "Searching This Mac..." appears with a spinner at the bottom of Finder ... forever? About 20 minutes so far... (This used to be instantaneous.)  It cannot find all the other matching files it previously showed me are in multiple locations on the main drive.
    Can someone tell me how to fix this?  Thank you.

    Based upon my test results below, Apple Support has escalated this to the engineers for resolution.  It appears that the presence of any mounted DMG file is what precipitates the problem, and the problem goes away if I close the DMG, but I can't really search in my DMG files until this gets fixed.
    <quoting my test results:>
    I have done more testing this morning.
    I had always worked with the Finder Preference > Advanced > When performing a search = Search the Current Folder.  I changed this back to Search This Mac before conducting the following tests.
    My conclusion is that the presence of any open DMG is causing the problem.  Other connected drives (external) don't have any bearing; they work fine.
    Test 1, with no DMG open:
    Pointing to the David home folder.
    Search Name=Dad
              This Mac=58
              Davidn=23
              This Mac=58
              David=23
    This is as expected.  The counts include files from an external hard drive, together with the internal drive.
    Test 2, with a DMG (Personal) open:
    Pointing to the David home folder.
    Search Name=Dad
              This Mac=45  (Note that this number is lower than in test 1, and it should be higher by 3 because of the files in the DMG.  Expected count was 61.)
              David=23
              This Mac = <spinner>  (Expected 61)
              <cancel>
    Test 3, with the DMG still open:
    Search Name=Dad
              This Mac = 0  (Expected 61)
              David = 23
              This Mac = <spinner>  (Expected 61)
              <cancel>
    At this point, I closed the DMG.
    Test 4, with no DMG open:
    Search Name=Dad          This Mac=58
              David=23
              This Mac=58
              David=23
    This is as expected.  The counts include files from an external hard drive, together with the internal drive.
    In addition, the tests I conducted yesterday, where I was directly searching in the DMG, remain the same: The first time the result is correct, and after that I only get beach balls.
    Note that the DMG used for this test (Personal) is only 1 MB in size, and contains only 12 items in the root -- not a lot of searching to do.  I have tried to force Spotlight to reindex this file by moving it into and out of Privacy.  I never notice Spotlight do anything about that, but maybe it is too small to be noticeable.

  • Screensaver broken under Mountain Lion

    Well, just upgraded to Mountain Lion, and the default screensaver doesn't work like it use to. Previously, I pointed it to use the
    directory that contained all of my photos, in which there are a bunch of sub-directories (photos/2010, photos/2011, photos/2012),
    and all the photos in the sub-directories were seen by the screensaver and used. Now, pointing the screensaver to the "photos"
    directory gives me a "no photos found" message. I have to point the screensaver to one of the sub-directories (i.e., 2012) for it
    to find/use photos. Limits me to only the photos in the sub-directories, not all the photos in my collection. Why would they change
    this behavior?

    If you don't want to upgrade to Mountain Lion Server, you're only other option is to completely erase your OS volume and reinstall Lion; then Lion Server. Or if you don't want to run Server any longer, you can just install Mountain Lion.

    I have tons of photos in my camera roll on both my iPhone and iPad, so this is not the problem.

  • App store and Java broken on Mountain Lion?

    Hi all, so I just purchased a brand new 13" Macbook Pro, the first thing i did was install Mountain Lion on it, (it came from the factory with Lion) so i have no time machine backups to revert to. Here are my problems 1.) I can't download anything from the appstore, no matter how large or small of an app. 2.) Java will not download, when I open java preferences it prompts a dowload which after reaching about 15 mb it will say the download failed because the file was corrupted. The same thing happens when I try and manually initiate the download through Terminal. I spoke with several Apple reps and they all said that I would have to reinstall Mountain Lion (as far as I can tell there is no way to do this without a backup). So is there a way to fix this without reinstalling Mountain Lion? If not how do i reinstall. Any help is greatly appreciated
    Thanks

    I can't download anything from the appstore, no matter how large or small of an app.
    Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Security > General
    Click the gold padlock icon to make changes. You may be prompted for your admin password.

    You can reinstall OS X using Mountain Lion Recovery but it shouldn't be necessary.

  • ICal sync with gcal broken after Mountain Lion upgrade

    Is anyone else seeing that iCal events created in iCal no longer sync into GCal after the Mountain Lion upgrade?
    I'm running OSX 10.8 and iCal 6.
    I have a google calendar account configured in iCal, and iCal has no problems reading/sync'ing events that are created directly in Google Calendar. It also has no problems seeing free/busy information of people in my Google Calendar account when I create a new event in iCal. However, when I create an event in iCal, the event never ends up in Google Calendar.
    This problem didn't used to exist before I upgraded to Mountain Lion. I haven't changed anything in the settings since my upgrade.
    The problem doesn't exist in my iPhone, which is still working properly.
