If you don't need to display the site and you want only to download it and process it in the background you can use HttpClient: http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/httpclient/

The main difference between a web application and a desktop application is that web applications do not have access and can't manipulate your local system ( you can't open a window that displays all your local files, you can't delete, rename, edit local files and so on ). Obviously, this is just one difference, there are many more ( the best would be if you google for "web aplication vs desktop application" because the same rules apply for 99% if not all the platforms you can find out there ).
Desktop applications can have full control of your local system ( obviously, we have to take in consideration the platform we are using because since AIR is quite new in the desktop application field it is also more limited than other languages that have been used successfully to create desktop applications for years and year; like ce C# or C++ and so on ).
Another important difference is that desktop applications usually need to be installed in order to function where on the other hand, web applications can run in the browser without you having to install the aplication you are about to view on your computer ( in some cases, like of the Flash and Flex platforms, you only require a "special player" that can display the content you are trying to access... for Flash and Flex applications you need the Flash Player installed for your browser ).
So, before jumping into a project/platform you need to know your target. If you goal is to offer a fast, easy to access and no install required application to your users then you'll usually go with a web application. If your application needs to work with local files, maybe local databases, or it needs more control over the user's PC and so on, then you'll most likely go with a desktop application.

Trouble logging in to desktop application

Hi,
I've been a user of Adobe story since the first couple of weeks of it's free trial a year back, but I'm having trouble logging into the desktop application now. Whenever I try to sign in, it gives me the "signing in..." window, but then the window closes and it leaves me on the first page with only two options "learn more" or "sign in."
Another discussion thread told me to delete the "PrivateEncryptedDatak" keychain from the keychain access application, but that didn't help. I also tried deleting the files in the ELS of the AIR application library (aka just moving them so I could return them in case this didn't solve the problem), and that just prompted me to upgrade my account. After putting the files back into the ELS of the AIR application library, it didn't prompt me to upgrade my account but the previous problem remained.
I was able to log into the desktop application about 2-3 weeks ago, no problem. I am still able to log onto the application through the browser without a problem either - except for that it doesn't have the changes I made to my scripts 2-3 weeks ago.
Any help?

A couple of questions first:

There is also a com.adobe.AdobeStory.4875E02D9FB21EE389F73B8D1702B320485DF8CE.1.plist file. Should I delete this too or just the com.adobe.AdobeStory.4875E02D9FB21EE389F73B8D1702B320485DF8CE.1 folder?

-Does this mean that I will no longer be able to use the desktop application online? A friend of mine who started using the adobe story with me around the same time (a year ago when adobe was only offering story for free) and he is still able to use his desktop application online. If I can only use the desktop application offline, how will it ever sync with the browser version?

We have developed a desktop application using Flash software and published the same for MAC environment. When we double click on the index.app file, the application is working perfectly in Mac 10.6.7 at our office. But if the same index.app file is double clicked in Mac 10.6.7 at out clients location, its not opening. For your information the client is able to open this same application by double clicking on index.swf file. The main problem is that client is not able to open the application using index.app file at their office whereas we are able to do so at our office. Can anyone give some suggestions to sort this problem?

The most common reason is different versions of Flash, or different versions of web browsers used. Some users may elect to not have Flash installed at all because of the processor overhead of Flash. If you are going to make an application for a client, check what operating system and browser versions they are using first. Then determine if a stand alone application is required, or if they have the necessary plugins to run specific browser enhanced code.
P.S. MAC is an acronym for Media Access Control. Mac is the shorthand for Macintosh, the operating system and computers made by Apple Inc.

Opening a new URL in an existing browser window from a Java application

I've tried one of the many codes to open a new browser window and it works, but I need something else.
Is there any way to open a new URL on the same window on a Java desktop application? (Changing the URL on the current browser window without opening a new one, I mean).

You can do that by using an add-on such as:

Another way of opening the home page in a new tab is to middle click on the home button in the navigation toolbar.

One of our Managers encounters the error 'A problem occurred while accessing the Office document cache. Do you want to repair this problem?'
Then When he says yes it give a warning that the cache will be backed up and replaced
Then it says 'A new office document Cache has been created...'
Then it loads this cache with an error
Then After all that the next time he tries to open the document it says is encountered "Sorry, we couldn't open 'URL."
We have Reinstalled office 2013 on the users PC repaired the cache numerous times

Cannot download Adobe Story Desktop Application

Hello, and thank you in advanced. I'm getting started in writing and was thrilled to find Adobe Story, so much so I upgraded to Adobe Story Plus along with the Creative Cloud. Then, a desktop applocation? The one thing that was missing!
So, when I go to download the Desktop Application I am prompted that I will need to install Adobe Air as well, as it is required for the installation. I have Adobe Air but I hit install anyways. It completes the progress bar and then switches to a dialoge stating: A download error occured. Try to download again?
In response I try multiple times more. Sometimes it doesn't even complete the progress bar and just skips to the failure notification. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Air. I've logged in and logged out. I've waited several days between my attempts and I always get the same result.
If there's anything you guys can do it will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

Data storage io techniques for ordinary desktop applications needed

hello everyone.
i'm writing an offline tool for a mmo game (eve online) which is planned to be a useful help in analyzing economics in that game for maximizing the player's efficiency in making money.
i intend to implement algorithms who need a set of pre-defined values of specific object types, e.g. ores, minerals and spaceships. so it's logical that i must add these values stored in some file.
my first idea was to implement some script files for storing these values. this solution would make the tool read these files in and generate objects from the scripts on each start-up of the application.
unfortunately it's possible that the number of object values will exceed to an amount too big for a quick and user-friendly start of the tool and too small for a full-fledged database. so the basic problem/question is: how can i avoid an annoying start-up time caused by reading in large files and generating objects all the time?
probably some of you might point to the ObjectInputStream which might be a lot faster for creating objects from file data. Of course, this makes sense since these objects never change. but this solution would have 3 main contras:
a) if i had to change values of a pre-defined object, a script file would make changes much easier than a object file.
b) in my opinion, it's not really the oop way to store 20-50 objects in different object files, although they are instances of the same class. it's much more "elegant" just to store the pure values and let a method read in the values and generate a bunch of instances of a class.
c) the user would not be able to change the values on his own. a simple script language would give the user more freedom in customizing the application for his needs, e.g. a new game patch changes the values of special minera types.
oh, if you try to guess the data structs that organize the objects in runtime: i tend to use simple lists or search trees.
so, does anyone know a good alternative way for providing a semi-large amount of pre-defined object values to an offline desktop application?

I don't think the amount of data could possibly be so much that load time would be an issue. If you are talking about the amount of work you need to do to build classes for all the different types of data, you could instead save the data as XML files, and then use a technology like JAXB to automatically build the classes for you. These classes know how to read and write the data based on some XML Schema.

How to disable auto header and footer from firefox desktop Application

I build a Firefox desktop application for my company. i need to print some page from that application using JS window.print(). It Works Perfectly in my application. But the problem is when it printing my document it prints a header and a footer automatically. I Want to remove this. I can remove this on Firefox browser , but i cant remove this on my application. Please Somebody Help Me.

Should EntityManaer be Closed in a Desktop Application Environment

Hi All,
I'm developing a desktop application with persistence api to connection to database. The application consists of two simple classes Order and Customer, where Customer is used as a field in Order. There is a ManyToOne relationship from Order to Customer and a OneToMany relationship from Customer to Order.
I have another class DBManager for managing all the database activities. All the methods in the class will create an entityManager and close the entityManager once they finish their own operation. An example method is as following:

            entityManager.persist(order);
            entityManager.getTransaction().commit();

    }As all entity instances will become detached once the entity manager is close. If I execute the above method, I'll receive an error saying that "Cannot persist detached object.", where the object refers to the Customer object stored in the Order.
I found that there are two ways to fix this problem, I can either merge the Customer object back to the context as following:

            entityManager.getTransaction().commit();
    }Both ways would work but I'm not sure which one is the best practice to handle the situation. I know that in EJB environment the entityManager should never be closed, but according to article http://java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/J2SE/Desktop/persistenceapi/, entityManager should always be closed when it is no longer needed. I'm therefore very confused about which way to go. Can anyone please give me some advice on that?

There are a couple of combining usage issues that are providing the problem. The issue is not specifically with you closing the EM but that combined with your usage of the persist() api. This test case would have the same issue in an EJB environment even if you were not closing the EM.
When using the persist() api you are depending on the behaviour that managed objects are ignored by the persist when infact you should be using multiple APIs depending on the state of the Entities that your application is interacting with.
The best approach is to interact with the EM within your application code. This allows you to share the same EM across all of a particular business call or logical application transaction. This could be wrapped within a DBManager but you would need to expose the concept of transactions to the application. This ensures you can track the lifecycle state of the Entities involved while allowing you to easily manage the EM resource.
If your architecture requires the DBManager pattern you have developed then you should only use persist() on Entities that you know to be new and merge() otherwise. In the example you have provided you could simply swap out persist() for merge() in your addOrder method (without the additional customer merge) and the code should work as you expect allowing you to close the EM.
You will need to close() or clear() the EM at some point within your application. Otherwise you are sure to run out of memory.

What data binding framework to use for EJB(JPA) - Swing desktop application

I am developing EJB server application which mostly uses the same entities and session EJB's both for web and for desktop user interface. While JSF is working nicely, I am stuck with necessity to make decision with data binding framework to use for desktop application - I investigated:
- JSR295 reference impementation at java.net (beans binding)
- Eclipse JFace
- JSR295 implementation at kenai.com (better beans binding)
- JGoodies binding
At present I like JGoodies, but I am not sure whether I am not missing something - I guess - large enterprises should develop a lot of desktop applications as well and what binding framework they are using?

I create them sometimes but they are service tools, not part of the main application framework. Generally you keep everything on the server, web based - this keeps it secure, accessible and contained. With all the web 2.0 javascript toolkits available nowadays you can go quite far creating a desktop experience in a browser, with limitations.

Flash Desktop Application - how to update?

Hi all,
I'm trying to put together a flash desktop application. I
want it show each of my .swf's i created, per month ( i.e. january
month plays 1.swf, february plays 2.swf, march plays 3.swf etc.)
how can i code the flash to update automatically or would i
have to use some external codes to accomplish this?
is it even possible to update if it's a desktop application?

I'm using Flash 8. As long as the user has Flash installed in
their browser than using the .exe file on the computer has no
issues. I believe that the reason the .exe file is larger than the
.swf is that it contains the necessary information to run the .exe
file whether Flash is installed on the computer or not. I haven't
tested that out yet though.
Adobe's Air actually allows you to install the application. I
haven't been able to play with that as of yet, but I have seen some
people using it and a demo of it.

I just tested the application I have out on a computer
without Flash on it, and it worked fine. So, the reason the .exe
files are so large is because they contain all the requirements to
run a Flash app.
