BT Broadband, style over substance?

I have now been a BT Broadband customer for 6 days. I have had use of my BT broadband for exactly 3 of the 6 days I’ve been customer.
Day 1-3 - 25th, 26 & 27th September 2010
My first impressions were very good. Why?
Slick sales front end. Call answered in the UK within minutes. UK call centre.
Competitive package, clear delivery / activation dates etc.
Engineer and equipment arrive on time.
Impressed with the quality of the equipment (hub and phone).
Getting consistent speeds of 6-7mbps against a BT predicted speed 5-6mbps.
Day 4 - Tuesday 27 September 2010
I get home from work (Brighton, Sussex, BN10) and try to log onto the internet. Internet Explorer opens fine, as does Goggle. However, no web pages will load. I try loading web pages through both the address bar and Goggle search engine – both fail to load any tried website (BBC NEWS, SKY NEWS, BT, ENGADGET, TECH RADAR, YOU TUBE, FACEBOOK, MET OFFICE and SPEAKEASY BANDWIDTH TESTER).
As I’m rather well drilled in tech self-help, so I try the following trouble shooting techniques.
Turn my hub off for approx 5mins and also my laptop. No change in symptoms.
Check all wirers are connected properly, all fine.
Check hub, all lights solid blue.
Get my work laptop out to try the connection, exactly the same problem.
Try to connect with my Xbox 360 – connects to hub, but no internet.
Try with Playstation 3 – connects to the hub, but no internet.
Try with my HTC Desire phone – connects to the hub and google, but will not load web pages.
Turn off my hub for another 5 minutes and retry steps 1-6, still the same problem.
My HTC Desire Phone (Android 2.2) is on the Three (3) network and can act as a wireless hotspot, so I try all of the above equipment to connect to the internet – ALL of the devices in steps 1-6 connect to the internet and load any web page that I desire, by both the address bar and search engine.
I then, having exhausted all viable self-help options call BT. This where my impression of the company deteriorates and also my expectations are not met. Why?
It takes 15 minutes to be connected to tech support, notably slower than the BT sales team.
My call is now diverted offshore. The line is particularly bad and I have trouble understand the operative’s accent.
I then, despite explaining the self-help steps mentioned above, am asked to turn my hub on and off and wait 3 minutes, no change.
I’m then asked which operating system I use, to which I respond one laptop has Windows 7 and one Laptop has Windows XP and both consoles operate their own OS.
The BT Tech support then tells me that the results of a line test confirm that I’m connected to the Internet and it’s something to do with my equipment!
Let’s just consider point 5 above. BT are suggesting that overnight my 2 laptops, Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and HTC phone has all developed localised faults and thereby ‘it’s my issue’. OK, I then pointed out that in fact all of my equipment happily connected to the Internet via Three (3) mobile broadband Network and thereby his assertion that it is a localised problem is without merit.
At this point over an hour of my evening has been wasted.
After being put on hold for about 10 minutes I’m politely informed that in fact there is a major DNS fault in my area and that BT engineers are working tirelessly to resolve the issue with an expected resolution time of 12:30pm Wednesday 29 September 2010. Call ends and I go to bed happy knowing that tomorrow I can watch Jamie Oliver’s American’s food revolution on 4 on demand.
Day 5 – Wednesday 29 September 2010
I get home from work 7pm and try to log onto the internet, exactly the same problem. I try all of the steps I tried yesterday day, same result. Goggle but no web pages will load.
This is where my patience wears thin. I get up at 05:30am every morning. I travel 2 hours into London. I work 9 hours, generally without a lunch and then travel 2 hours back to Brighton. I generally like to be in bed by 10pm so on average I have about 3 hours to myself each evening, this time I consider precious. Having wasted an hour of it yesterday, I was now doing the same thing again.
I call BT tech support. Before I am connected to BT technical support a pre-recorded message informs me that a major fault in my area has been resolved and that I needed to turn my hub off for 3 minutes and also restart my computer. Done that, no change, so I hold for tech support.
The call is a bit of a joke.
20 minute wait to be connected. Missing the Champions League game. My girlfriend is giving me grief saying cancel the contract, blah blah blah.
I’m then told to turn everything off again, check the wires, advise what antivirus I use and operating system so on and so forth.
I politely explain that all of my equipment is fine. My work laptop has been working fine all day. My personal laptop connects to the internet fine through my phone, as does my PS3 and Xbox 360.
I then have to explain to tech support that there was a BT problem in my area yesterday, that was supposedly fixed this afternoon and could he please read my notes.
I’m then told that my connection has been tested and is fine, I’m also then asked if I’ve done a speed test. At this I laugh.
I respond yes I checked it at the weekend (Sat and Sun) and each time I was getting 6-7mps http://www.speedtest.net I was also able to stream HD You Tube while downloading Kick ASS in HD from PlayStation Network.
I’m then asked, have you done it today? To that I respond that it’s hard for me to run a bandwidth test without being able to load websites!
I then ask the operative if anyone else in my area is experiencing the same problem?!?!? Why I have to suggest this I don’t know.
After approx 40 minutes of talking to tech support I’m again told that there is a major DNS fault in my area and that BT engineers are working tirelessly to resolve the issue with an expected resolution time of 24 – 48 hours.
This is not acceptable. I am paying for a service which I am not receiving. So far I’ve had 50% availability based on the length of time I’ve had the service. The tech support operatives I have spoken to, who have really tried there best to help me, are simply not empowered to resolve my problem. I’ve wasted hours of my time trying to resolve the problem. I’ve frankly had enough.
Why I have chosen to post the above in the forum is because I feel conned. The sales front end of the company is slick, fast and professional. Once you’re a customer it’s slow, uninformed and the actual product based on my experiences to date is not fit for purpose.
Hopefully tonight I will log in tonight I will be able to enjoy the service that I’m duly paying BT for. If not, I will be sending back my equipment and taking my custom else where.
Perhaps someone from BT might read the above and provide me with an informed response?

  • Cover Flow... Style Over Substance

I don't know about you but I think that someone, somewhere deep in halls of Cupertino have got themselves into a right royal frenzy over Cover Flow.
We all remember that Cover Flow first appeared as a shareware plug-in for iTunes. Sure, it looked good but in all honesty, after playing with it for a minute or so it became obvious that as a means of actually selecting music, Cover Flow was pretty useless. I dumped it.
Similarly, those of us who have experienced using Cover Flow to select music on the new 6th Gen iPods have also realised that it is more a gimmick than a useful addition to the UI.
Now Leopard... After less than 24 hours using the the new operating system, I've once again reached the same conclusion. As a method of selecting files in the Finder, Cover Flow – in my opinion –is once again pretty useless.
Doubtless many out there will disagree but I think that Apple really should get over this Cover Flow fixation. Yes, we all know that it looks pretty and all that. But as a productivity tool it's worthless.
That's my ten penneth. I'd be interested in what others have to say.

Then don't use it - no one is forcing you to.
However I would say that you should keep an open mind and think past previous ways of doing things. For example I have a 'manuals' folder where I save downloaded manuals and docs. Coverflow is one way of browsing through that folder then when I see the document I want (which is one of the ideas of coverflow) I can page through it in coverflow view or, more likely, just press the spacebar to bring it up in Preview.
It works, and more importantly I have the choice.
Do I have coverflow set as default view for looking at folders - no of course not, it is not necessary and it consumes resources to render each image. But it's there if I want it - and for some folder/documents it is very nice.

  • Unusually high broadband usage over March and Apri...

Have others noticed that they appear to have used far more of their monthly broadband allowance in the last two months? My 'alleged' usage was quadruple my usual but on Friday when I called the billing team they didn't want to know and weren't particularly helpful. However I persistedwith the BT technical team on Sunday and they admitted that they had been receiving an unusually high level of calls from customers complaining about seemingly high usage. They were informing the billing team of the problem so I will continue to chase them this week. Apparently there was some issue with the usage monitor giving out incorrect information so it might be worth people challenging the billing team if they think the same thing has happened to them.

*** please ignore this as I am still having the same issue even without Skype
I've been checking my usage monitor since I installed it this morning and couldn't undestand what these huge red spikes in download activity were every few seconds and my usage was going up and up.
Looking on the internet for solutions I saw lots of mentions about Skype, which I have but have only used once or twice a couple of months ago.  Oh, but wait a minute, that was when my usage skyrocketed.  And guess what.. I just uninstalled it and now the huge red spikes are no more on my monitor!
I have no idea of the why and how but even though my Skype was not open it was doing something over the internet and something very big.
So if you have the same issue and you have some kind of video calling software installed it may be worth uninstalling it just to check.
The monitor I have been using is here: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Network-Tools/Bandwidth-Tools/NetMeter.shtml

  • Style over protection?

    Hi!
I'm thinking about switching iPhone 5 cases. The one I'm thinking about buying is a Pokedex style one and I think most of them are either Capsule and Deflector from Redbubble.
I currently have an Otterbox and I love the protection and I do not mind the big size. I tend to be careless with my electronics which is why I love the Otterbox. However, I also love the Pokedex cases and the Otterbox is kind of boring.
Is it worth it over the Otterbox? And which is better? The Capsule or Deflector case?
    Thank you!!!

If you tend to be careless about your electronics like be then I recoomend that you get a case for protection rather than style. I wouldn't mind having a cute case on my phone but I constantly drop mine so I decided to make sure I had a case that will protect it. If you think the Otterbox is a little big then try the LifeProof cases, it cost more but I have one and its slim and worth every penny to me.

  • What are the advantages of using ITSGENMOBILE4 generating style over ITSGENMOBILE style?

    Dear All,
Right now i'm working on an ITS mobile project, we generated the html templates in our internet service using the ITSGENMOBILE4(recommended) generation style, but the screen looks disorganized. but the same screen generated using MOBILE generation style looks fine. So, Could anyone guide me of whether to stick to the MOBILE generating style or to use MOBILE4 generating style?
    Kind Regards,

I am wondering how much benefit I would get out of using OS X Server in my office instead of iCloud and the soon the be Families. (Yes, I know Families is suppost to be for Families but I still think its features would be useful to me)
As compared to hosted services, running OS X Server means more effort and expending more time to manage, expects more knowledge to configure and to troubleshoot, requires more hardware, and includes higher monthly costs for static IP.
Depending on the particular features required, you'll potentially also be adding software onto OS X Server as well, possibly something such as OwnCloud.
There are various good reasons to run your own servers, but it's not going to be free, and it's going to cost more than hosted services.  Some possible reasons...
...You might want to learn IP networking, setting up local DNS services, configuring and troubleshooting your mail server, securing the server against attacks, managing backups, and a variety of other topic areas, for instance.
...Or you might need to keep your mail and your data stored locally for security or privacy or confidentiality reasons.
We'll probably have to wait for the release to learn what relationship OS X Server might have (if any) to Family Sharing — whether that's somehow going to be available with OS X Server, or whether it'll be tied to Apple's own servers.

  • Apply a hover style over a layer cluster using V2 API

We are looking to apply a hover style that would highlight the [radius/extent/polygon] that contains the features that fall under a cluster. We are using V2 API. Any ideas !!!

    Hi,
    Did you try this?
    See my VectorLayer of Customers
// define and use the Customers theme
            vectorLayer = new OM.layer.VectorLayer("vectorlayer2",
                def:{
                    type:OM.layer.VectorLayer.TYPE_PREDEFINED,
                    dataSource:"mvdemo", theme:"customers",
                    url: baseURL,
                    loadOnDemand: true
            var variableMarker = new OM.style.VariableMarker(
              classification:"logarithmic",
              marker:new OM.style.Marker({ vectorDef: [
                                shape: {type: "circle", cx: 5, cy: 5, width: 10, height: 10},
                                style: {fill: "#ff00ff", stroke: "#000000"}
              startSize:20,
              increment:5,
              numClasses:10
            vectorLayer.enableClustering(true,{clusterStyle:variableMarker,minPointCount:5, maxClusteringLevel:8, threshold:40});
              vectorLayer.setHoverStyle(new OM.style.Color({strokeThickness:8})); //MY HOVER STYLE DEFINITION

  • Broadband carry-over?

If you are over your usage it is "carried" over to the next month in the form of a financial penalty. What happens if you are under the usage level,is the excess carried over and added to your next months total? Or;do you have to use it it or lose it?

Use it or lose it. Just like a mobile phone contract.

  • Character styles over ride text hyperlink styles

It took me a while to figure this out. I could not get my hyperlink styles to work. Just as an experiment I changed the text to none in the character style (I am using it styles on the entire site) and my hyperlink styles were working correctly. I think perhaps this would be helpful to know as many people seem to post about text hyperlinks not working properly

Thanks for posting this Marcy. This behavior is a known bug our engineering team has logged.
To workaround the problem you can select the hyperlinks within your text and remove the character style applied (i.e., change the character style to "none").
    Best regards,
    Corey

  • Program updates or retrograde steps - Flash over substance

I've recently updated Pages and a number of other programmes only to find useful features have been lost. For example, in Pages, the ability to convert text to table.
The marketing of the upgrade promotes features such as 'New look'  or 'enhanced function' to encourage the user to change but fails to address the features lost. - Shame!
I am reluctant to accept other upgrades which really downgrade the program.

    Hi,
I am using a Nvidia 4200M adapter in my Laptop, Driver 266.96, Direct X 11
In my desktop I am using an ATI XFX 6950, latest revision drivers (I am not at home right now so I cant get that info).
The issue I did describe above, but it was a long explanation.
In some flash games the game files load initially and get as far as the "click to start" button. Then the flash area usually goes either all white or all black (usually depending on the falsh game default background color) and then it stays that color. Cant see anything after hitting start (usually most games have an intro video or animation before the game starts, but I cant see any of it.
For the very few games that do start, the flash game or application does not seem to work correctly in that when the rare game starts, it wont save any game files or save files to the pc and so if I exit the game (navigate away to another page or close browser) and then later come back, even though I click the option to save games (and ensure that the flash application slider shows it can save files and lots of space) it does not save and I have to start from the beginning all the time.
    More explanation I gave above.

  • Why does "remove attachments" in Mail now remove entire e-mail?

This is just one of numerous problems with Lion after installing it on MacBook Pro.  Every time I choose "remove attachments" in Mail, it deletes the entire e-mail and I can't bring it back.  Additionally:
    1.     I-Cal entries take forever (delayed entry) and assume I have an all-day event so I now have to enter the event and then open and edit it - additional steps.
    2.     Airport (Wi-Fi) now shuts off without warning and cannot, under any circumstances, be restarted from any of the several screens and buttons that supposedly offer that option.  Therefore, when I switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet and then back, I have to do a restart.
    3.     The Address Book now has a stylistic but non-functional interface that requires several additional steps to look at anything and there is no longer an option in Mail to "Open in Address Book" without first opening the v-card, once again complicating my life.
    4.     The removal of arows on scroll bars means that I can no longer gradually look at a large file line by line but, rather, have to use the trackpad (which is also jumpy) try to focus in on the area I want by trila and error.  I hate the trackpad for these reasons and now that I have lost the arrows, I have essentially the same problem with the mouse - very cumbersome for anyone doing production type work, rather than just playing.
    5.     My Carbonite no longer works and I see there are compatibility issues with all kinds of other software.  Worse some of my favorite old programs (e.g. Fetch) no longer work in Lion.
    6.     The conversation function in Mail now groups things I don't want grouped (e.g., totally unconnected e-mails with the same words in the subject).  I had to turn that off for this reason.
Overall, Lion is a huge disappointment.  It's all bells and whistles with actual losses in functionality for basic work - style over substance.  This is the same thing I've seen happen with Microsoft Excel as basic issues that needed addressing have been ignored while all sorts of pretty stuff that is pretty much useless has been added.
Even more frustrating is the message I got from Apple Support, which was to re-nstall Lion.  That took 6 hours and resulted in not one correction of any of these issues.  What has Apple done?  This OS was not ready for primetime.

The "feature" I experience is that the message disappears, just as shown in Herbert's video (good work), and that it comes back after a quick mailbox switch. It has nothing to do with message sorting or anything. All my Mail settings are the same as in Mail 4.x, and everything worked fine there. Must be a bug in Mail 5. (Yes, I have reported it.)
The "explanation" that Mail creates a copy without the attachment, instead of keeping the old message without the attachment, doesn't really solve the problem. (Sorry for my extensive use of smileys, it's not my style but sometimes convenient.) The copy should come up without the mailbox switch either way.
    Edit: spelling.

  • Good money after bad? The Mac experience for a would-be Windows convert.

I was seduced by the striking design of the MacBook, but am fast coming to regard the whole Apple experience as being an ongoing nightmare. One of the mainstays of my computing life is use of Quicken for personal accounting. I have been using it on Windows for eight years. I bought the MacBook expecting to be able to upgrade to Quicken for Mac but now find that Intuit neither support nor sell the product in the UK. Worse, I can find absolutely no other product available for Mac that comes half way to being as good as my current Q2000 Basic - iBank is so cumbersome and riddled with errors that it's unusable, and as far as importing eight years of Q data goes; forget it. The other main use of computing is for digital photography. As well as suddenly deciding that most of my uploaded JPEGs were unreadable, iPhoto refuses to see my camera as an external drive, insisting every time that it downloads whatever is on it. MacBook can obviously see it, but refuses to put it on the desktop as a drive. Anyway, I digress slightly.
I read, before buying the MacBook, about Bootcamp, and assumed that I'd be able to load Windows to get over the difficulty I had with MS-centric software. Unf. this requires an XP disk that includes SP2 on the same disk. My PC was early XP and I upgraded by download to SP2 - what joy that was as it put me off-line for about three weeks while I struggled to re-configure the networking aspects of my PC.
Anyway, I am now considering buying WinXP SP2 on a single disk to try the Bootcamp route. Anyone had experience of doing this from a newly purchased OEM XP SP2 disk (about 60 quid from Amazon).
I'm pretty disillusioned about Mac. I can't see what all the excitement is about. It's different for sure, but better? Even the Cinema 23" given to me for a birthday present is nice looking but I needed to buy a £15 adaptor to use it with the MacBook - mean or what. It's not like you can use the **** thing with a PC so it sits beside my other flatscreen that I use with my essentially retained PC. The Apple store guy said it just needed a simple adapter to convert it for PC use, but they didn't have one in stock. Now I find that no-one actually makes one because the screen has an Apple exclusive interface.
I'm beginning to think, no, I'm convinced, that Apple is all about style over substance and that the benefits are only visible to those who work in the graphic design industry where styling has rendered Macs 'industry standard', and the nerdy types who inhabit the Apple stores and have time to spend dissecting operating systems and discussing the finer points of elegant coding, instead of lives.
I have a feeling there's going to be a MacBook going cheap on eBay soon, together with a nice 23" display. Pesuade me otherwise, please.

I just ditched my last Windows PC, and one of my major hesitations was that I have years of Windows Quicken data that I didn't want to lose. I didn't want to convert it to Quicken for Mac because Intuit was quite up-front about the difficulties of that process. I took the route of running Windows on Parallels instead of using Bootcamp. I - like you - had an early Windows XP CD, and I've loaded it on Parallels and upgraded it to SP2 without having to re-buy a new SP2 CD. Quicken for Windows runs perfectly within this environment, and I'm continuting to run it and have kept my years of data.
You may not want to go down this path, but it does work - and beautifully! The sad fact is that most Mac users will probably have a need to run at least some Windows applications, which makes the switch to Intel processors such a great move. Most Quicken reviews do state that the Windows version is preferable, for example. But for things like photos, video, and other creative applications, I'll never use a Windows app again. Just wanted to offer my two cents, and I hope you learn to love that Mac!

  • Mac Pro dead

Mac Pro about 3 years old, bought new in Australia.
suddenly would not start up past the Apple logo, got stuck there.
won't boot up from install DVD.
have read about similar problems, nothing i tried fixed it.
sent it to Computers Now Apple dealer in South Melbourne where i bought it.
after 3 weeks they have tried new RAM, new memory riser boards, new processors and a few other things.
they can't fix it or tell me what is wrong.
next option was to try a new logic board.
they are charging me money for their time to do these experiments ( i am not buying the components).
testing a new logic board would cost me more in time charges.
if that is the problem then its uneconomical to fix the machine with incredibly high cost of Apple replacement parts.
so i have told them to send it back to me still broken.
i am disgusted that they seem so incompetent and are unable to actually diagnose a fault without doing an expensive replace everything to see what's wrong.
should i expect a better level of knowledge from a genuine Apple dealer?
Also i am so sick of every Apple computer I buy dying after 2 - 3 years.
These things are supposed to be Rolls Royces and we are paying premium prices and they are less reliable than a PC costing a quarter the price.
So I will probably get a new logc board in Thailand when i go there for holiday,
that's the way i fixed my Macbook Pro after 2 logic board failures,
local prices were incredibly high, i got a logic board there installed for a quarter the price i was quoted in Australia.
I am very very very unhappy with Apple build quality and reliability and service.
I bought a PC that is faster with more memory for $600 6 months ago, that Mac Pro cost me $3500.
So why pay premium prices for something that dies and is too expensive to fix?

    so they couldn't fix it
and couldn't tell me what's wrong.
they just tested by replacing stuff.
the logic board being the last thing to test,
which they can't do except by replacing it with a new one.
are they serious? is there no way to tell if a logic board is faulty?
they told me they did all the apple tests as per the guidelines.
frankly i think they sound like they know nothing about these computers.
new logic boards are of course horribly expensive for no good reason.
I am very angry with Apple yet again,
their "top quality" top price products just keep failing after a few years and are uneconomical to repair.
so you have to buy a new one, what a great business plan to keep sales moving.
I have been using Apple products for years since the IIvx i had,
as every year goes by i get more and more angry and disappointed with them,
the obsession with style over substance is causing build quality and reliability problems.
so why would you buy something so much more expensive than the competitior and less reliable?
next week i will collect my $3500 heavy over-constructed aluminium box sit it on the floor and use it for a coffee table.
    thanks Apple.

  • How do I subscribe to Adobe Framemaker 12? I can't find a real link on the adobe site anywhere?

    Hi;
I'm trying to sign up for a subscription to Adobe Framemaker 12. There's a banner item with £29.30 per month Adobe Framemaker 12. Clicking on this takes me to Upgrade Guide | FrameMaker 12
This has in very small letters: To subscribe now, visit the Store page.
Clicking on this redirects me to http://www.adobe.com/uk/products/catalog.html
Finding Framemaker on this takes me back to the Framemaker page with buying guide and the very small letters on it!
How can I actually subscribe to Framemaker 12?!?!?!

    http://www.adobe.com/products/framemaker.html
    Right pane.
    Click [Buy]
I want to buy: [pull down Subscription]
    [Add to Cart]
The Adobe web site, victim once again to gratuitous eternal re-design churn, is a triumph of style over substance, and is probably resulting in utterly needless lost revenue. You say "Shut up and take my money". They say "Sorry, we're into stealth merchandizing. Guess again. If you can figure that we offer it, and figure out how to order it, we might sell it to you, or not."
Their "All Products" catalog page, for example, is sprawled across 7 HTML pages, where a single multi-column page of simple names used to suffice.

  • Apple Watch vs Pebble Time

    Hi Everyone,
I'm a bit of a tech geek and love acquiring the latest tech but I am having a dilemma in choosing between the new Apple watch or the Pebble time.
There are several pro’s a con's to both watches but my main attraction to the Pebble is it's price as it is far more affordable but I have owned the last couple of iPhones and I know that they just work and are very easy to use so I presume this will translate over to the Watch.
Aesthetically the Apple watch looks amazing but is it more style over substance? Another point is battery life, the Pebble claims up to 7 days where as the Apple watch is 1 day which is a big downfall for me.
    Which one would you choose?
Anyway have any of you guy's and gal's made the plunge and spent your hard earned cash on a smart watch yet and if so what do you think of it?
    Cheers

    Hi gg
Cheers for your opinion. I must say I have to agree with 3D TV being a gimmick, I've got one of those too and can't remember the last time I availed of the 3D features as it usually makes me feel ill. I do think that wearable tech will take off but I might wait another while to see how it pans out.
Is anyone using a smart watch at the moment? If so let me know what you think of it.
    Cheers

  • Skype on Windows 8 Sucks

Am I the only person who thinks that the new Skype on Windows 8 is really hard to use. Why oh why can I not simply import all of my contacts I have previously imported. Trying to do anything is really hard.
It is a great example of style over substance.

I agree. It does leave A LOT to be desired. It is a handicapped mess. I cannot listen to voice mail, set it up or even usually answer a call in time with this modern UI mess. I have a number through Skype, and once the 12 month term is up, I am done with Skype and on to something hopefully more useful. Thanks, Microsoft. Nice product. Frankly, the whole Windows 8 experience has left much to be desired.
