Bug in ip routing in WRT54GL?

Hi everyone! During Christmas I had some problems with my WRT54GL. I'm connecting to the Internet with a Speedtouch 510 with PPPoE and dynamic ip. The Speedtouch takes care of the PPPoE login and it's set to "PPPoE in bridged mode" which means that the public ip address is passed to my computer/router or whatever is put on the "LAN" side of the modem. When I was away for Christmas I noticed that I couldn't reach my home computer anymore. When I got back the ip for my connection had changed. I usually get a 83.177.x.y address with the gateway 83.177.8.1, but this time I got the ip 90.130.6.30. Neither my computer or the WRT54GL could ping or reach anything outside my WAN ip. Until then I had been using the tomato firmware, I tried installing the original Linksys firmware, but I got the same result. Connecting the Speedtouch directly to my computer worked fine, which to me kind of proves that something is wrong with the WRT54GL. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this? My solution was this; I think the problem occurs because of a bug in the WRT54GL firmware. The following configuration (recieved through dhcp) works fine: IP Address 83.177.13.213 Subnet Mask 255.0.0.0 Gateway 83.177.8.1 the following works when connected directly to the computer, but not when using WRT54GL: IP Address 90.130.6.30 Subnet Mask 255.0.0.0 Gateway 83.177.8.1 The solution was to power off the modem long enough for the dhcp lease to expire, power it on and hope to get a 83.x.y.z ip address (which I got and then everything worked as usual). I'm guessing the WRT54GL cannot handle either the subnetmask of 255.0.0.0 on the WAN interface and/or maybe in combination with the gateway on a address which differs from the wan ip. Thankful for any comments on this. Cheers, Tobias

Thank you Rich!  Yes, that link between NetFlow and routing-not-bridging is beginning to sink in for me.
My reason for bridging is that I do not need VPN or NAT, I just need the subnet (ip) traffic to flow from gi0/1 to gi0/0 and back.  I have been reading and re-reading this article, http://www.netcraftsmen.net/resources/archived-articles/428-integrated-routing-and-bridging.html, and it seems that "concurrent" or "integrated" routing and bridging may be the way to go.
I am concerned that, to the extent that the ip traffic is bridged (not routed), it will be invisible to NetFlow, for exactly the reason that you describe. So even if I set up a CRB or IRB, I might not get useful NetFlow data.
Or maybe there is a way to configure ip routing so that there are hardly any decisions made, rather the subnet goes straight through in both directions.  I fear that is such a simple case that no one makes examples for it.  I have been assigned half of a class C subnet, e.g. 209.201.225.1 through .127.  I am not terribly short on ipv4 numbers so I can use up a number for the gi0/1 and/or gi0/0 and/or BVI interface(s).
For ~14 years a Cisco 2621 router has been used "here" purely for the purpose of traffic shaping. I recently upgraded to the Cisco 1941 and am keen to take advantage of traffic peak shaping and NetFlow v5 or v9.  I took the config from the 2621 and used it as the basis for my config for the 1941.
I am (obviously) very new to all this and self-taught.  My expert is currently ridiculously overbooked so I am trying to figure it out.  In other words, I will not feel offended if you need to state the "obvious" to steer me in a useful direction.

  • Router installation help! (WRT54GL)

Hello, there. New guy here. :-) I got my new linksys router today (WRT54GL) after I had messed up my other linksys router (WRT54GS). Before I even connected the router up I popped the CD in my PC and ran setup wizard. I followed the instructions in the setup wizard and when I was done configuring my router it tried to connect to the internet. It was unable to and it basically told me to unplug and replug my cable modem. I did that a few times but I kept getting the same message that it couldn't connect. It was until I was looking at the front of router and would you beleve the horror: the "Cisco Systems" button was SOLID RED. Now I know that solid red means something bad and that was probably the reason that I couldn't connect. But the thing that puzzles me is that HOW and WHY did it turn red in the first place. I plug the cables in the right places and I followed the instructions. So is there anybody that can tell me what I did wrong and guide me in the right direction? Any help would be appriciated. Thanks!

Hello again. Sorry for the late reply, I've been very busy lately. I don't think my ISP has anything to do with this. All I did was follow the follow the setup instructions (putting in my ip address, etc.) and all of a sudden I get a solid red diag light and it tells me that there's something wrong with my internet. Which was just BS because I plugged my eithernet cable directly to the computer and it was working just fine. I'll try to remember the steps I took in the setup. BTW, my ISP is cable....

  • Bug or Limitiation by Design

First let me start by saying that I am using a WRT54G v5 and I know that this is a wireless router. I am posting here because I have disabled the wireless and the problem I am having is not related to the wireless at all and is either a bug in the router or a limitation by design.
I have the following setup. On my wan interface I have a static IP address of xxx.xxx.0.26 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.248 and a default GW of xxx.xxx.0.25. This network connects back to my ISP and they have no problem getting to my router and I have no problem getting back to them.
On the LAN side of the router I have setup the router in "router" mode and not "gateway" mode so it is doing no NAT. The LAN IP address is xxx.xxx.6.33 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.240. Other devices on my internal network use the xxx.xxx.6.33 as the default GW. They are able to connect to the gateway fine.
Here is where the problems begin. Looking at the routing table of the linksys I see routes that looks like this.
    Network Subnet Mask Destination Interface
    0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 xxx.xxx.0.25 WAN
    xxx.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 xxx.xxx.6.33 Lan & Wireless
    xxx.xxx.6.33 255.255.255.240 xxx.xxx.6.33 Lan & Wireless
    xxx.xxx.0.24 255.255.255.248 xxx.xxx.0.25 WAN
The problem is the route xx.0.0.0 which limits me from routing to the entire class A network beginning with xxx. There is no way I can find to remove this route.
I did some more testing using the private network ranges and it seems that the route changes depending on the class of the first number. The 10.x.x.x networks creates a 10.0.0.0/255.0.0.0 route, the 172.x.x.x create a 172.x.0.0/255.255.0.0 route and the 192.168.x.x networks creates a 192.168.x.0/255.255.255.0 route.
Now this makes no sense in the modern days classless routing to send a whole class A B or C subnet to the Lan and Wireless interface regardless of the subnet mask on the internal LAN inteface. I cannot imaging this device is doing classful routing and if it is why?
None of this would be a problem if I was not using public IP addresses on my LAN interface. I don't care if I cannot get to other private networks but by using this device with public IP's on the LAN I have effectively stopped communications to my ISP and every other person on the xxx.0.0.0 network.
So it can either be one of two things. A bug or a limitation by design to force me to buy a more expensive cisco router that does not have this problem. Either way the old WRT54G that I installed enhanced linux firmwares never had this problem so it looks like I will be buying WRT54GL's from now on or switching to different manufacturer.
If anybody can think of something to check I would apprecate it. I am at wits end with this device and have already ordered a WRT54GL that I am putting enhanced firmware on but I would like to know if this device can handle my needs out of the box and if so what is the trick.

  • Router cannot get a WAN IP address form ISP (e4200 v2)

    Hello,
I just bought the Cisco e4200 v2 router, I did all the installations as the Cisco connect software instructed me and everything went fine.
After the installation I configured the router on  the WAN settings as (Automatic Configuration - DHCP), like my old router (Linksys WRT54GL) and I saw that my router doesn't get the WAN address from cable modem from my ISP(it stays on 0.0.0.0), it doesn't renew the IP address.
So please how can I fix this issue? This is a bug in the e4200 v2 firmware?

EVERY time you change what is connected to a cable modem you MUST power cycle the modem.  If it's a telephony modem it has an internal battery so you have to push the reset button, usually with a paper clip, to reset it.
Cable modems memorize the MAC address of the first connection and block all subsequent MAC addresses.

    David,
You are right, theer are some changes incorporated in the latest MLR # 16 on the configurations files and on the dehydration store metrics(such as performance, fields,..).
However, I would not suggest to continue working on olite, even for Development/Test purposes as you might get stuck with strange errors...and the only solution would be to re-install SOA Suite if your olite gets corrupted. There might be ways to gets your olite back to position, but trust me..its not so simple.
Also, when you develop and stress test all your testcase scenarios in an TEST Adv installation, its simple to mimic the same in actual production box, as you exactly know its behavior.
So, go for a brand new SOA 10.1.3.4 MLR # 5 (or) 10.1.3.3.1 MLR # 16 SOA Suite Advanced installation with Oracle DB 10.2.0.3 as its dehydration store.
    Hope this helps!
    Cheers

  • No signal through linksys wrt54g router

my internet signal is no longer going through the wrt54g router - don;t know why.
i.e. no wireless handheld or computer and no ethernet when going through the router.
If I bypass the router the internet is fine, with the ethernet cable
I tried shutting everything down with power disconnect for periods of time, then bring everything back to power.
settings in linksys setup 192.168.1.1 look ok as far as I know; signal lights on router and modem are normal; settings in mac system prefs look normal also.
    Suggestions?
    Thank you

  • Router Port Forwarding not working since Mavericks

I have an iMac sat behind a BT Home Hub 3 (an ADSL router, if you're not aware), with several ports (POP3, SSH, HTTP, etc) from the outside world forwarded via the hub to my Mac. Since installing Mavericks (from Snow Leopard), NONE of these ports are now open.
They're open on the Mac, and another machine on my home network can use them locally, but from outside the network, they're hidden. Shields Up shows them as Stealth.
    Things I've tried:
    Rebooting everything.
Setting the Home Hub up again, forwarding all the ports again.
Turning all the sharing off in Mavericks and then back on.
Trying the same services on different ports.
    Trying different services.
    Turning off the Mac firewall.
    Turning off the router firewall.
Trying the Mac on another IP address and reforwarding everything to the new one.
Putting the Mac in the DMZ.
I can forward ports to other devices on my network (e.g. my NAS) and they work fine, so port forwarding isn't completely broken on the router
    Here's the thing though...
On a completely separate network, on a separate Mac (a 2012 MacBook Pro) that went from Mountain Lion to Mavericks, also behind a BT Home Hub 3, EXACTLY the same thing is happening. No ports can be forwarded to the MacBook Pro, but all the ports are open to the local network.
Any ideas? I'm pretty sure this must be a bug in Mavericks as I can't see anything else it can be.

It's not just single port forwarding that has bugs, the entire router has bugs and simply does not work as advertised. I have found the following bugs/aspects of this router that just does not work correctly: 1. If you have to open ports, and who doesn’t, this router will eventually stop accepting packets from WAN>LAN. You will still have Internet access but no open ports. A reboot will fix this problem. Oh, by the way, this router has no scheduled reboot option! <--That would be a workaround but a welcome one for this router. 2. Firewall Access rules do not work!! Yep, a Cisco router and basic functionality simply does not work. I called Cisco and even though the tech saw the router not working denied it was a bug! Said we have to do port mirroring, setup a workstation with WireShark and capture packets so we can debug the issues.  That would take several hours. I told him I would have appreciated if Cisco would have debugged the issues with their router BEFORE they shipped the units. Stay away from Cisco Small Business Routers. I wish I had. And if there are any Cisco die-hards out there willing to prove me wrong, just reply to this and please, prove me wrong that the RV series and specifically the RV215W is not JUNK.

  • WRVS4400N - Logging and Email Alerts when I use a VPN client - Firmware bug?

    Hi folks -
I've got a problem with my WRVS4400N that has been dogging me for a long time now, and I'm finally fed up with the email alerts.
My wife has a VPN client for her work, on her laptop.  It is nothing fancy, normal IPSec VPN, details on it I can get if needed, but it's just VPN.
My WRVS4400N is running 1.1.03 firmware, latest on the site.  I have all VPN pass-throughs enabled.  VPN connectivity for the wife works great, no problems that I'm aware of for her functionally.
The problem is, that I have logging turned on with email alerts.  When my wife uses her VPN connection, I get flooded with alerts from the router with all sorts of goobly goo information.  It's almost like there is a bug in the router firmware that is parsing information incorrectly.
Log levels are set to 0,1,2,3.  Email alerts enabled.  DoS threshold is 50, Log Queue is 100, Log Time is 60.  SMTP information for my mail server populated of course, and Local Log enabled.
Below is a sample of the email body that gets sent.  My wife has been using her VPN connection for about 3 hours tonight, and already I've been flooded with over 1000 emails.

Does anyone have any ideas?  This seems like a code bug to me, but how do I go about reporting to Linksys?
Of course, I can turn off email alerts, but then that defeats the purpose of the router being able to tell me when something is awry.
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Jesse T.

    hay,
    Nobody can test this?
    nobody has a 5520?

  • User-maxlinks bug

I am seeing a curious bug concerning maxlinks and currlinks.
In my dialin router, I have several users defined locally. Each username is allowed to use ppp multilink, and I have also defined a maxlinks in the username command:
    <b>
    username xxxx user-maxlinks 2 secret ...
    </b>
Sometimes, I find that users cannot add a second link to their bundle. If I debug dialer events, I see that currlinks=2, maxlinks=2, so the new call is rejected. But the user has only one link up.
This looks like a bug in the router's running count of currlinks. I have the impression that sometimes when a call gets cleared, the currlinks gets decremented against the wrong username, or something like that. My evidence is two debug messages:
    Se1/0:2: Dialer-peruser: Decremented user yyyy's currlinks, currlinks=0 maxlinks=2
Se1/0:1: Dialer-peruser: User yyyy's dialerperuser structure freed already
    Serial1/0:1: Dialer-peruser: failure decrementing currlinks during mlp_remove_link
Maybe the error message above occurs because the bundle can be dialout as well as dialin. Is is possible that currlinks gets incremented on dial in, but not on dial out, but decremented when both types of call get cleared? Certainly the pattern for the case above was for a user that was allowed 4 links. I dialed out one channel, then he added another two to the ML bundle.
Maybe we are dealing with two different bugs here?
    Anyone else seen this?

Whether I persue it or not will depend on how much pain it gives me, how easy it is to demonstrate, and whether my time is better spent doing other work like learning in the lab or on NetPro.
This bug actually is likely to give quite a lot of pain in the long term, because it will limit the capacity of the dialins over time. But there is a workaround, which is not to limit the number of links.
The real reason for exposing the bug here is to see if anyone else has noticed it, and help me characterize it. When presenting a bug to Cisco, if you can present a repeatable set of conditions that produce it, then they are more likely to take notice.
Characterizing the bug also makes it easier to test if it has been fixed in the next release. I think this one should be quite easy to reproduce. It just needs a bit of detective work, which is presicely the sort of work I really enjoy!

  • Problems with AirPort - WRT54GL (for a short time)

    Hi!
If have an old MacBook with Core Duo (OS X 10.4.10, all updates installed). The last days I have more and more problems with my WLAN. I use a WLAN DSL-Router (Linksys WRT54GL with original firmware v4.30.7). The problem is, that after some time while everything works perfectly, AirPort is still connected to the WRT54GL, but I cannot reach the Router anymore (no ping, no tcp connection to the router or to any computer in my network or the internet). At the same time router works fine for other computers. When I disable AirPort and enable it again, it connects again and everything works fine again. Any idea what the problem could be? Before the problem occured for the first time some weeks ago, it worked perfectly for more than one year with the router (no firmware update). The WLAN signal strengh is between medium and strong.
The only problem I had with the router was, that I had to use WPA2, because WPA did not work for my MacBook. And it's not very fast, but that's not so important. The latest problems are really annoying, e.g. when I wrote a long email using webmail, the connection was lost and after I reenabled AirPort, the text was gone.
Does anybody know how I could find and solve the problem?
    best regards
    Andreas

You can't power it down from the AirPort Utility, but you could use the Timed Access feature to control when certain network devices can access the base station itself. Timed Access relies on the device's MAC hardware address and will control access to the router on a time basis.
You would find this feature on the AirPort > Access Control tab within the AirPort Utility.

  • WRT54GX SRX router hangs intermittently

I bought the WRT54GX SRX router two months ago. The router always hang and needs to be power on and off to get it connected again.
    WRT54GX SRX
    firmware version 2.00.14
    Setting for the router is
    wireless channel = 11
    wireless mode = mixed.
I read from some post that SSID broadcast needs to be turn on. Mine is currently off. I do not think that this is a problem. Will the folks at linksys comment on this?
    Thanks
I would appreciate some help. Thanks

Microsoft recommends that you do not configure access points as non-broadcast (hidden) networks; by default Wireless SSID Broadcasting is enabled.
I searched Microsoft Knowledgebase for "SSID Broadcasting" and found the articles below (and others) about problems than can arise when you disable this setting... (details at link below)

  • WRT54GL & Bittorrent problem.

hay, i'm using my WRT54GL router for my ADSL connection, the line speed is about 12k/s up, 250k/s down. got 2 machines using this router, wireless one, and cabled one.
the computer that using Bittorrent is the cabled one.
now my problem is that every time i run the a BT client (not a specific one, but mainly uTorrent) it really slows my internet connection, even tho the client is configured to use only 6k/s upload.
but that's not all, the weird thing is that even after i shutdown the BT client, the connection still won't work well, page load takes lots of time and most of the time won't work at all, tho if i do managed to download something from a web page, speed can get high, but link will probably brake after some time.
i tried setting QoS, but that didn't help much, i set upload to 86 Kbps, set port 80 to High and BT port to Low.
    any ideas?

Linksysinfo - How to configure WRT54GL for VOIP and-or BitTorrent
When you click on the first link in the post above, it says...
Configuring a WRT54GL to handle an existing Vonage router (WRTP54G or RTP300) and/or BitTorrent.
The instruction above is for third-party firmware. If you are using the official Linksys firmware (ver 4.30.9 is latest) then perhaps you can still borrow some of the ideas from this article.
    Hope this helps,
