Bug? Wrong default application

I think I may have found a bug in Tiger related to assigning the correct default application.
Background:
Installed TurboTax Deluxe 2005.
Created a tax return file.
Exited TurboTax.
Double clicked tax return file.
TurboTax Deluxe 2004 is launched and returns an error trying to open the file.
What I have tried:
Performed get info on this year's and last year's returns.
File Type = TaxR; Creator = MIT5 for 2005, MIT4 for 2004
Dumped Launch services database using lsregister.
Everything looked OK, found out that Turbo also uses
an extension of "tax" for the tax return files
Rebuilt Launch services database using lsregister and problem still existed.
Added "tax" extension to 2005 tax return file and correct default application chosen.
Excerpt from Launch Services documentation on how the default application is chosen:
2. If the document has a filename extension (or if one has been specified as a parameter to LSGetApplicationForInfo), find all applications in the Launch Services database that claim to accept documents with that extension.
3. If the document carries a four-character file type (or if one has been specified as a parameter), find all applications that claim to accept files of that type.
4. If more than one application has been found as a result of steps 2–3, apply the following criteria in the order shown:
a. If the document carries a four-character creator signature (or if one has been specified as a parameter), give preference to any application that claims to accept documents with that signature (typically the application to which the signature belongs).
Conclusion:
The correct application is selected when an extension is used, but not when the choice is based on the file type. Therefore, I believe there to be a bug in default application selection base on file type and creator.
Does anyone see anything place I have gone wrong?
I know that when I installed TurboTax last year, it worked, so I'm not sure when this bug was born.
iMac G5 (iSight) Mac OS X (10.4.4)

When you went to "Get Info," did you try expanding the "open with" section of the window to view the drop-down menu? This drop-down menu under "open with" should tell you which application is set to open the file by default. In that drop-down menu, you should select the newer version of your tax program. Then under "Use this application to open all documents like this," you should probably click the "Change All" button.
Not sure why the correct application wasn't assigned by OS X in the first place. But I don't know if what you're describing is really a "bug." See if you can set your newer app to be the default application using get info as described. Good luck.

That is because you have your system set to open EPS files in Preview for some reason.
Change the OS association for EPS and .AI Files to open Illustrator.
Photoshop doesn't have file handling settings like that - the settings are all part of the OS.

  • Default application conflict / bug (Pages + TextEdit)

TextEdit is stuck as the default application for for .pages documents. It stays on the default application place above the separator, but Pages (or whatever else I try to set as the actual default application) gets the (default) parenthesis. It's possible to change single documents to actually open in Pages, but not all.
TextEdit gives this error when trying to open .pages documents (for google and stuff):
The document “---“ could not be opened. The file isn’t in the correct format.
The file might be corrupted, truncated, or in an unexpected format.

Nah, I've tried that and every variation.
Deleting default applications from TextEdit's info.plist (or even the whole info.plist file) didn't work either. Deleting TextEdit did though. Are the default applications also kept somewhere else?

What exactly is the benefit of changing the "default applications" then?

  • FileVault Bug - default application settings

When i activate FileVault, the system resets the 'default application settings', such as default browser, and defaults as to what applications open what file types, after reboot. So when i choose Firefox as my default Webbrowser, after one reboot Safari is the default broswer!
This is very bad for people those want not use Safari or Mail etc...!
    Is there any work around?

  • How to set my default application...not working

My company has nearly all adobe applications installed from PageMaker 6.5 through InDesign 5.5. We use them all frequently. I'm trying to set my defaults on the Mac Pros and it is not working.
    Specs if Needed:
    OSX 10.6.8
    Model Identifier:          MacPro5,1
      Processor Name:          Quad-Core Intel Xeon
      Processor Speed:          2.8 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          4
      Memory:          6 GB
      Boot ROM Version:          MP51.007F.B01
    +BootCamp dual boot Windows 7
We proof out all files in the version that it comes to us. Our customers are on different versions than the most current, and it's driving us crazy that we can't set the defaults for
    each Adobe application. For Instance,
    We want for Defaults:
    Photoshop = CS4
    InDesign = CS4
    Illustrator = CS5
    etc.
The Finder will not allow us to make the change to open all of a certain file type in the version we want by default. We also use a third party application that allows us to "double
click" InDesign files and open them in the correct version. This saves valuable navigation time and because of the OS's problem with using the correct icons, it also saves us time
dealing with the "Untitled" document when we accidentally convert by opening in the wrong application by mistake. We have gone through Onyx utilities and massive permissions
troubleshooting to no avail. Does anyone know how to set the default for ALL files of a type for Adobe Apps? This has been thoroughly tested and is not working on 10 plus
machines, and only effects Adobe apps.
    Any Ideas?

I think you miss understand the question. There is a problem with OSX 10.6 and Adobe Apps. 10.5 ok, not sure about 10.7 because of all of the other Adobe problems we downgraded the test machine that we used for the upgrade. There is no way that I have found to make the files “Double-Clickable” through assigning a default application of files with Adobe extensions. We already have an app. that we use and it worked fine until 10.6. I can’t just approve a division-wide purchase of software for a bug that may be solvable by other means (by the way supposed cost of the licensing Soxy is deceiving at $20. Not for us. For companies it’s $20 per platform & also for each time Adobe updates. When we swap out hardware, we have to pay $40 again . Their pricing is absurd). $40 x a couple hundred machines every 18 months or so, uugh! The ten or so I’m working with are just the ones in my immediate department.
I know you have good intentions with your reply and I appreciate it, however I’m looking to solve the problem, not put a band-aid on it. If the problem is by design so Rorohiko can hold companies hostage, then I guess we’ll just have to deal with the few extra clicks it takes to figure out which version we’re in need of, and dragging to the launch bar.
Thanks very much for your reply,
    Seth

  • How to Remove Default Application

Can anyone tell me how to remove a default application that opens a certain file? I'd like OS X to prompt me to choose which application to use each time a certain new file is opened. It seems once you've set a default application it does not allow you to revert to the old setting. Is there a way to do this? Thanks!

There doesn't seem to be a way to set "none" as the default application. OS X works very hard to assign an app to every file it can, but sometimes, as Jim has discovered, it gets it wrong. This seems to be most often because apps tell the OS what they can open & some older ones don't do it quite right, causing OS X to guess about some file types & incorrectly assigning them to the app.
Fixing this would be tricky. Individual files don't tell the OS what app to use unless you change the opening app for that file alone. If you use "Change All" that info is removed from the file (if it was there) & instead recorded in a preference file. But generally, the defaults are stored in the Launch Services database, which the OS maintains automatically.
It is possible to get the OS to rebuild that database, but doing so just fixes any corruption by once again checking the apps, so the same wrong guesses come back to bug you.
A few of us have been discussing Launch Services, the .plist, & how it works in another topic (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=258306) but as yet, it offers no answers that would help here.

  • Changing file extension default application

Hello, I periodically change my .avi and .mpg movies default "open with" application to VLC, but although the association change in first place, in a few days the default application mysteriously turn back to QuickTime.
Is this a bug or an Apple QuickTime appropriative policy? Anyway, is there any way to change to VLC permanently?
    Thanks in advance
    iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Open one of your .avi or .mpg file's "Get Info" window. Pick a new "Open With" application and click the "Change All" button. Confirm your changes.
From this point on (until you change it again) any time you double-click to open any of these files your chosen app will be used to play the file.
You can temporarily override these settings by Control-clicking on a icon and choosing a different app from the pull down menu.

  • [Gnome 3] Default application for Calendar

    Hi,
I have done a fresh install of Arch Linux with Gnome 3 yesterday. I haven't installed evolution, I have installed thunderbird with lighting. But in default applications, Gnome 3 show only gedit like calendar app:
Is this an Arch bug or Gnome bug?

thunderbird is not a calendar application unless you tune it up with an extension. therefore it shouldn't be in there
but if you really want it there, you need to append to /usr/share/applications/thunderbird.desktop, to MimeType, text/calendar;text/x-vcard, then run as root update-desktop-database -q

  • Default application will not change

I’ve seen several posts on this topic but no working solutions yet. I have a Mac with several user accounts, some admins, some not. There are 2 versions of QuarkXPress 6.5 installed, the normal version and the Passport Edition. Under some accounts, double-clicking a file will launch the normal QuarkXPress, under others it will launch Passport by default. When I get info on a Quark document and change the default application to the other version and click “Change All…” it just reverts back to whatever the previous default app was. It doesn’t matter if the user is an admin or not, it won’t change. I even tried installing the free preference pane from Rubicode (http://www.rubicode.com/Software/RCDefaultApp/). That didn’t work, either. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Kevin. I've run MacJanitor, verified disk permissions, and restructured the volume with Disk Warrior, which although it didn't solve this problem it didn't hurt :] I'm good about maintenance since I'm always working on large files and PShop is a memory hog.
I never had the problem with Panther and 2 (or more) versions of Adobe, but the same thing happens on my husband's G5 so it may be a Tiger/Adobe bug.
It's not just an Adobe thing though -- the same problem occurs with Dreamweaver MX 2004 and the new Dreamweaver 8 files. I can't say about MS Word, since I refuse to use the 2004 version (I don't useWord Office X either except to open files clients send me).
I did discover that if you click on the 'cancel' button, rather than the 'continue' button when the "do you really want to change the open application" options pop up then the file will open with the correct version selected - although it won't change all the same type of files system-wide.
I'll check into Cocktail - but I think your advice about just dropping the files onto the older version icon on the dock will probably be the way I'll go. I really don't want to reinstall Tiger - it's a pain to update all the versions to 4.4 --
    Thanks again -- Susan

  • Setting default application (yes, i've seen previous threads on this topic)

This is a continuation of the thread
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4613912
which has been archived, and so could not be continued.
The problem with assigning default applications to open given file types persisted on my machine even after i had re-installed the Tiger recently.
But i think i might have an idea now what is going on: apparenly the file
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
is getting erased from time to time all by itself.
It is only left now to figure out why this happens, and how to fix it.

I checked the disc with Disc Utility and emptied caches with Maintenance.app.
    Then i removed the files
    com.apple.LaunchServices-0140.csstore
    com.apple.LaunchServices-014501.csstore
    om.apple.LaunchServices.plist
(though i noticed that com.apple.LaunchServices-0140.csstore regenerated after about 5 seconds).
    Then i rebooted.
Then i went to a directory with 3 PDF files, two of which were assigned to Preview, and 1 to Adobe Reader (do not know why).
I set PDFView as the default application for one of the files assigned to Preview, and clicked Change All.
The icon of this file changed to the icon of PDFView, but the other two icons stayed the same.
Nevertheless, the default application of the other file assigned to Preview changed to PDFView, but the default application of the third file remained Adobe Reader.
I think this behaviour is a bug.
Anyway, i will try to keep an eye on these files, and will make a post once they change there default applications by themselves.

  • "There is no default application specified" message

I'm not exactly sure if this is the right place for this question, but here goes.
I just bought a Wacom Bamboo Fun Tablet, and I'm having trouble installing it. Following the directions, I plugged the tablet into my USB port, inserted the installation CD, and double-clicked on the icon to open up the program. When I clicked "Install", Finder started bouncing, and said "There is no default application specified to open the document [whatever it was called]."
Slightly frustrated, I tried to call Wacom, but they were closed, so I called Apple instead. The representative told me that he wasn't sure, but he thought that Wacom tablets were just "plug and play" and that I didn't need to do any installing. Sure enough, the pen was working on the tablet, but the mouse wasn't.
Now, I'm pretty sure that the tablet is supposed to have a program that lets you set your preferences for the pen, but I wanted to get drawing, so I inserted the other CD that contained the three bare-bones versions of photo-editing programs. One of them installed okay, another freezes every time I try to install it, and "Photoshop Elements 4.0" brings up the same message when I try to install: "There is no default application specified to open the document 'Adobe Photoshop.pkg'."
Sorry this is so long-winded, but I'd appreciate it if someone could a) tell me I'm in the wrong forum and point me in the right direction or b) offer advice or speculation. Meanwhile, my shiny new tablet is tragically inoperative until I figure this out.

You are definitely not in the right forum. The one you want is Wacom's technical support line or their support forums. Of course you might read the installation information that came with the tablet where there may be instructions for installing on a Mac.
You can download the Mac driver for the tablet here.

  • Default Application..Help!

    Hello Everyone,
I am currently having a problem with defaulting Indesign between CS2 and CS4. What I would like to do is change Indesign CS2 as my default application to Indesign CS4. I have already went through Open With and changed the default application to CS4 but it does not take and still defaults to CS2. Perhaps I am pointing to the wrong directory? I would greatly appreciate any help since this problem is really annoying. Thank you for your help in advance.

In Windows the last application to be installed usually wins. You should be able to fix a problem, though by opening explorer, then going to Tools > Folder Options > File types and scrolling to .indd.
Highlight it, then cilick the "Advanced" button, clcik the open command to highlight, and click the "edit" button. In the Applcation to Use to Perform this Action put "C:\Program Files\Adobe\CS4\Adobe InDesign CS4\InDesign.exe" "%1" including all quotes (You'll need to edit the path to point to where you've actually installed the program, which is probably different from my system). The "%1" is important to tell the program to open the file you double click.

  • [how to] Thunar forgets preferred / default applications in Openbox

    This was my situation:
I would set default image viewer to gpicview, default for movies and music was vlc, default for PDF's was evince. After reboot these settings would be forgotten and the system would use gimp for images, mplayer for movies and music and gimp(!?!) for PDF's
    This was my fix:
    edit ~/.bashrc and add this
#set desktop environment as XFCE so default apps can be managed
    export DE=xfce
now in terminal follow these ideas...
    1) to check the MIME of a file do this
    xdg-mime query filetype ~/imagelocation/imagename.png
    response is
    image/png
    2) tell it to use a certain program
    xdg-mime default gpicview.desktop image/png
    0) To get the name of the program:
navigate to /usr/share/applications and get properties on the relavant program. Check the "Launcher" tab and copy the command.

    Thanks, tawan.
But I can not set my default application correctly.
What I did is as follow:
    [Desktop:henry 10:37]$ xdg-mime default writer.desktop application/vnd.ms-office
    [Desktop:henry 10:39]$ xdg-mime default mousepad.desktop text/plain
    [Desktop:henry 10:41]$ xdg-open ./doc.doc
    method return sender=:1.10 -> dest=:1.9 reply_serial=2
but xdg-open still use "mousepad" (my default application for plain text) to open this office doc.
I don't know what did I do wrong here...?
