Bulk convert xls to .numbers ?  Or getaround?

Hi there
We own a beauty salon and our windows laptop is dying.  We have bought an iPad which will hopefully replace salon laptop.
Only needing to use the web for browsing here and there and managing spreadsheets I have been told that iCloud and Numbers would manage our client database.  I have with a bit off a faff successfully transferred around 1200 .xls files to iCloud.
When I open the .xls on the iPad it asks:
Open in Numbers
This spreadsheet may look different
on your IOS device.  To preserve the
original, tap Open Copy.
Open | Open Copy
If I "open" numbers crashes, and if I "open a copy" the file duplicates to a .numbers file.
To clean up my client list do I have to open each one, then delete the .xls file?  And then delete the "copy" text in the file name (I know this part isn't compulsory).  Or is there a .xls to .numbers converter that will do this in bulk before I upload to iCloud?  I have searched the net and tried to do this in Numbers and Xcel with no joy.
This really needs to be done in one hit for a smooth transfer as the client info is changing on a day to day basis.  Also duplicate files spell possible disaster for us as the wrong file could easily be deleted by a staff member (or worse both) if this is done on an as and when basis.
Please tell me I'm being a total fool here and there's an easy way around this, thanks in advance and please help us out!
Best wishes
James

You probably could do the bulk convert on a Mac running numbers.  You may have to write a script to automate.
You could try another spreadsheet app and see if it could work with .xls without conversion.  You may consider another backup site like dropbox.com so that you have two/three copies of your files.
All of the "Office" document editing applications on the iPad have limitations.  Best try them out to see if they meet your needs.

I have been trying to open an .xls spreadsheet on my iMac.  Numbers says the file can't be opened it is encrypted.  How can I open this file and convert it to a Numbers document?
I am using iWorks '09 and OS X Leopard.
    Thanks

You can try with LibreOffice, but I'm not sure if it handles protected files

  • Bulk convert text to PDF with Acrobat

Hi. When I convert a text file to PDF with Acrobat X Pro the character spacing in the resulting file is incorrect.  The columns of numbers which do correctly line up in the text file, do not line up correctly in the PDF file.  I adjust the settings for the conversion in the CREATE PDF FROM WEB PAGE box and I choose a fixed-width font.   If I use Adobe PDF Converter (the printer driver) the result is perfect.  If I open the text file with Microsoft Word and then convert it to PDF with PDFMaker, it is also perfect. I want to use Acrobat so that I can bulk convert my 300 text files to PDF.   Can you please help as I have tried everything?  Thank you.  Paul Pontikis (Deakin University)

Thank you for responding LoriAUC.  I have 300 (*.txt) files that I only ever open with Notepad. I don't every open them in a web browser.  I want to bulk convert them to PDF.  The orientation of the resulting PDFs must be landscape.  It appears that the only way to select LANDSCAPE in Acrobat is to adjust the settings in the CREATE PDF FROM WEB PAGE box.  It seems that Acrobat uses its HTML Conversion Engine to convert text files to PDF.  When I do this and then bulk convert them using Bulk Convert Files to PDF, the orientation is correct, that is, landscape instead of the default portrait setting, however the character spacing is imprecise and the columns of data are wavy.

  • Can one convert .pdf into .numbers?

I want to convert .pdf files into .numbers. I've heard it is not possible, but I'd like to confirm it

    Thanks for your answer.
Yes, that seems to be right. However, I now believe that what one can do is convert .pdf into .xls which Numbers, more or less well, can read, and then save the file as .numbers.

you will require to write a module in your file adapter for the same.
ref: /people/sap.user72/blog/2005/07/04/read-excel-instead-of-xml-through-fileadapter as mentioned in the earlier post.
Else you can also use Conversion Agent to read the same.

  • Converting .xls to pdf

Can anyone recommend a good application or the best way to convert .xls files to pdf?
    Thanks

Have you tried printing and selecting "Save as PDF"? Or Save As and selecting PDF? I don't have Excel 2004 anymore so I don't know if it has the Save as PDF feature but the standard OS X print dialog has the selection for printing to PDF.

    Hi
    File->save as -> Save as type ( text tab delimted.txt) ->Click on yes .
Now open .txt file -> here data will be tab delimted.
genrally i use tab delimted file to upload the data.
Even if you want to programtically then get the data from xls file to Internal table, now use concatenate with comma ,now download it.
    Check the below program :
Upload xls file and you can see .txt file ( with comma delimted)
    Input ( XLS file )
    aaa 1245 2344 233 qwww
    233 2222 qwww www www
Output ( .txt file with comma delimted)

It has to be a smarter way to solve this.
Does anybody know how to do that?
I already get the month from a site and if its Oct, then I want to show it as a 10. I have searched in Date classes but it didn t help.

  • Pages and numbers  Ipad : How to convert pages and numbers to word and xls?

    Hello everyone,
I am currently using Pages and Numbers for Ipad. As I am currently working on these two programs and with their equivalent for PC (Word and Excel) for my research project, I would like to know how I can convert respectively the page and number format to word and xls, to use my documents both on my Ipad and my PC.
    - Is there a convert option in pages or numbers for IPad?
    - otherwise, is there suc an option in iwork.cim ?
    - if nothing of such kind exists on pages and numbers for Ipad and in iwork.com, is there any software which could do the conversion ?
    Thanks for your answers,
    John Molson

Within Pages, you can export to MS Word, Pages, and PDF, but Numbers only exports to Numbers or PDF...
Pages and Numbers on your Mac can convert the files to Word and Excel...

  • Elance for mac stuff? convert XLS - Numbers and make it look good

I often use elance.com for small projects. I have a project to convert some XLS sheets to Numbers. One of the main purposes is to make it look better, so I need a consulant who not only knows how to use numbers but understands design.
is there a group like elance but more mac focused...in order to get bids? or a few groups i should look at for small projects like this?
Also, as an aside, has anyone made a plug in for Excel so it can import numbers and actually work like numbers (ie, i know i can covert numbers to excel, but i really wish numbers was also available on the PC, barring that at least some plug in or somthing close?)

There is no Excel plugin available to decipher Numbers documents.
Given the past behaviour of M…Soft, I would be surprised if they offer one some day.
Apple always made a serious work to allow its customers to import/export M…Soft created files but there was no effort of this kind in the other world.
I would be surprised too if a Window version of Numbers was delivered one day.
Apple development resources aren't large enough to allow them to waste these resources on such a project.
At this time, it seems that they have some difficulties to maintain the two versions (mac and iPad) of iWork applications so, it would be very bad news for users of these products if they move some engineers on such a new task.

  • Import/convert xls document

I was emailed two xls spreadsheets. One was small and I had no difficulty converting it into a spreadsheet in AppleWorks 6. The large kept crashing AppleWorks. I downloaded the trial version of iWork 09 but kept getting error messages.
iWork numbers said "file format invalid."
iWork Keyote & Pages didn't acknowledge it at all.
What should I have done to make it work?
Meanwhile, I finally downloaded NeoOffice and was successful - and so I gladly paid their suggested $10 contribution.

It's quite possible the Excel files were password-protected. Numbers can't open a password-protected Excel file. Even knowing the password won't help, you're not given the option to enter it. Nor can Pages open a protected Word file nor Keynote a protected PowerPoint file. You best option is NeoOffice as you discovered.

  • How can I convert an old Numbers file to be compatible with the new Numbers version, without having access to the old?

I received a Numbers file created in iWorks version 8 or earlier, but only have the newest version of Numbers on my MacBook Air. I can't request the sender to reformat the file. Is there any way to convert the file so I can open it in the new Numbers version?

Are you sure you don't still have Numbers from iWork '09 on your MacBook Air. My Mid 2012 does. To be certain you can look in the Applications folder to see if there is an iWork 09 folder. You can also use Spotlight search to see if it will find that Numbers as well as the current one.
If you do find to 09 version: iWork '09 and iWork '08: File compatibility

If you have answer, please provide specific and detailed steps.
    Situation 1:
    Start:
150+ files in .xls OR .xlsx format
data contains many characters EXCEPT "Tab"
    Process:
    Use Automator to:
    Select Files from Finder window
Convert selected files from xls/xlsx to TAB-DELIMITED file format
    End:
    150+ files in .txt format
files have identical names to those from "Start:"
    data is TAB-DELIMITED
    Situation 2:
    Start:
150+ files in .xls OR .xlsx format
data contains many characters EXCEPT | (pipe, vertical bar)
    Process:
    Use Automator to:
    Select Files from Finder window
Convert selected files from xls/xlsx to |-delimited file format
    End:
    150+ files in .txt format
files have identical names to those from "Start:"
    data is "|"-delimited

If your post is addressed to my response then the answer is you have to write your own or search on-line to see if something exists to do what you want.
As you note there is no pre-built script for this.
