BW system ran out of "session" = transaction SMGW; how to track down "resource" issues?

Hi SAP Experts,
we had on our SAP BW system the following situation:
We are having a week daily process chains, that is uploading data from our ECC system.
Once in a month, we are uploading from our APO/SCM system data from our BW system.
Parallel we are having also SAP PreCalculation Server (with three PreCalc instances) instances running. The PreCalc Server is running daily.
The landscape in short: (DB server = AIX/Oracle, App-Server = Linux, SAP System=7.01; PreCalc Server = Win2008/64)
This week when all was running at the same time, we faced problems, that log-on to SAP System via ABAP took a long time, same BEx Reports (some failed with Run Time errors).
From the landscape infrastructure we couldn’t detect any resource issues (we are having two application servers connected to the BW landscape).
What we saw from the system transactions (SM66, SM51, SM21, ST02, ST04, ST06N) the issue did not seem to be resource based, by network, database, amount of work processes etc.
But we noticed in transaction SMGW, that it seemed not possible for external programs, like a BEx reports or the PreCalc Server to connect with new session to the BW ABAP landscape.
The trace showed in SMGW:
*  LOCATION    SAP-Gateway on host server / sapgw##
*  ERROR       Conversation 01792797 not found
*  TIME        Tue Jul 22 14:13:03 2014
*  RELEASE     720
*  COMPONENT   SAP-Gateway
*  VERSION     2
*  RC          728
*  MODULE      gwxxconn.c
*  LINE        971
*  COUNTER     75240
In system log, database alert log, we could not find any dead locks reported or anything reported, that explained why, via the SMGW is was not possible to connect with new sessions.
We restarted the PreCalc Server and after clarifying with application team of APO/SCM we stop the process chain and than the system was back to “normal” operation.
Now the question is, if you faced similar issues and what the solution, or how you where able to track down the issue?
Thanks for your ideas.
Best regards
Carlos Behlau

Hi Alwina,
thank you for your help.
What I was able to is in SMGW, because the system was very slow, that some connection where "red".
I forgot to capture screenshots and now I am not able to recall the the status text.
It is there a way to find out, if we reach the "max" connection numbers, like parameter gw/max_conn 500, via ST03N or via SMGW or via some logs?
I checked the SMGW trace, but I am not able to identify via the trace in SMGW, if the failures happened now, because max. values of parameters have been reached or what the cause was/is.
What I meant:
All external programs, like SAP BW BEx Analyzer (Excel Reporting tool for BW) are connecting via RFC calls. Also SAP Pre-Calculation Server is using RFC calls to generate the reports and send them via E-mail.
Usually, I can see these connections in SMGW (goto => logon clients).
There I didn't noticed that we reach 500, when we had the problem.
Best regards
Carlos

    hi
    Using status management, you can find out about the processing status of a business transaction, and change individual statuses. Each status informs you at header and item level that a specific status has occurred (for example, quotation has been released), and specifies which step may be executed next (for example, release is allowed).
    *user status*
    A status set by the user to complement the system status for a given status object.
    You can use only a user status belonging to a status profile (defined in Customizing) and assigned to the relevant status object.
    User statuses enable you to extend the control of business processes managed by the system status. You can set and delete user statuses manually when carrying out business transactions.
    *System Status*
    A status the SAP System sets internally as a part of general status management.
    This status tells the user that a certain business transaction was performed for an object.
    moreover using user status is customised,you can mainatian your own user uset status and control the system response as decided by the system status
    for this you can make your status profile which when you atach to your transaction can be used in particular transaction*
    *Status Profile*
    A profile used to control user statuses.
    A status profile is created by the user in general status management.
    In a status profile you can:
    Define the sequence in which user statuses can be activated*
    Define initial statuses*
    Allow or prohibit certain business transactions*
    *more about system status*
    Each marketing project goes through various system statuses, one of which is always set:
    ·        Created
    ·        Released
    ·        Finished or Rejected
    ·        Locked
    ·        In Process
    ·        Approved
    *System Status Overview*
    *Created (CRTE)*
    Use
    In the Created status, you structure the marketing project and enter plan values and dates.
    Features
    This system status is the initial status for new marketing projects. The status is set automatically when you create a new marketing project.
    The status does not allow you to:
    ·        Transfer to ERP
    ·        Transfer the target group to the channel
    *Released (REL)*
    *Use*
    Structuring is complete and the marketing project is released for the operative execution of the marketing activities.
    Prerequisites
    The marketing project has the Created status.
    Features
    In the Released status, you can create new, lower-level marketing projects and change the hierarchy. The Released status is passed on automatically to lower-level marketing projects.
    *Finished (FINI)*
    Use
    This status identifies a finished/completed marketing project. A marketing project with the Finished status can no longer be changed.
    Prerequisites
    The marketing project has the Released status.
    Features
    Lower-level marketing projects belonging to the same marketing project are also finished automatically. This does not apply to lower-level marketing projects that have the Finished or Rejected status.
    You can revoke the Finished status. The system then automatically revokes the status for all upper-level marketing projects in the relevant marketing project. For this, it is prerequisite that none of the marketing projects on a higher level to the relevant marketing project are finished or rejected.

    You'll have to select the entire external hard drive by the hardware name itself and then apply a new partition table to it under the Partition tab of Disk Utility. Erase and format the drive.

    Hi VK_DBA,
    According to your error message, about which query statement may fail with error message 8623, as other post, you can use trace flag 4102 & 4118 for overcoming this error. Another way is looking for queries with very long IN lists, a large number of
    UNIONs, or a large number of nested sub-queries. These are the most common causes of this particular error message.
    The error 8623 occurs when attempting to select records through a query with a large number of entries in the "IN" clause (> 10,000). For avoiding this error, I suggest that you could apply the latest Cumulative Updates media for SQL Server 2012 Service
    Pack 1, then simplify the query. You may try divide and conquer approach to get part of the query working (as temp table) and then add extra joins / conditions. Or You could try to run the query using the hint option (force order), option (hash join), option
    (merge join) with a plan guide.
    For more information about error 8623, you can review the following article.

    SQL statement and execution plan? Is there a server-side trace file created for the session?
    From the brief description, it sounds like bug 6471770. See Metalink for details. The workaround for this particular bug is to either disable hash group-by, by setting +"_gby_hash_aggregation_enabled"+ to FALSE (using an ALTER SESSION statement . Or by using a NO_USE_HASH_AGGREGATION hint.
    Suggest you research this problem on Metalink (aka MyOracleSupport at https://support.oracle.com)

    Good Morning,
    I have a MacBook Pro 15" and my warranty just ran out! I partitioned my harddrive into two partitions, one with Snow Leopard and the other with microsoft.This morning I turned on my Macbook Pro and it will not boot into Snow Leopard. I shut it off took out the battery, reinstalled the battery. Then I put in the Snow Leopard CD and booted up to disk utility and The Snow Leopard partion would not show up?? I do see the microsoft partion.
    I also rebooted holding down the shift key and still no Snow Leopard
    Could you please tell me what I can do, what keys do I press on restart any advice to get Snow leopard back.
    thank you.

    Have you restarted holding down the Opt key?  That procedure should give you a gray screen with all of the partitions that exist.  Then select the SL partition for boot.  Also go to System Preferences and Startup Disk, unlock the lock and select the SL partition as the default boot partition, then relock.

  • My Macbook Pro 2014 ran out of battery while mid-slideshow. Now the slideshow won't skip through photos and I can't figure out why? Macbook Pro 2014 13-inch Intel i5 8GB RAM 128GB flash, iPhoto library is on external HDD

    8GB RAM
    128GB flash SSD,
    Integrated Graphics
    iPhoto library is on external HDD
    I was in a slideshow, with around 1,911 photos in it. About halfway through, my Macbook ran out of battery. Now when I restarted and charged the Macbook and reopened iPhoto, the slideshow won't advance through photos, and I can't figure out any reason why it would do this.
    I thought it may be corrupted, so I deleted and reinstalled iPhoto library, iPhoto itself, and disconnected and reconnected my external HDD.
    This didn't work, the photos still won't advance.
    I don't know any reason why this would be happening, and there is ample space on my internal drive.
    I'm happy to provide more information if needed!
    Many Thanks,
    James

    Make a few tests, James, to narrow down the problem and find out, if the slideshow is corrupted, your iPhoto Library, or settings in your account.
    To test, if only your slideshow has a problem, create a new slideshow, just for testing. Just use "File > New Slideshow" and add a few photos. Does this slideshow play correctly?
    If the test slideshow does not play either, create a new iPhoto Library. Use the File menu in iPhoto: File > Switch to library > Create New. Import a few photos and create a slideshow.  Does it play?
    If even a new library does not solve the problem, test in a different user account (see this document:  Isolating an issue by using another user account - Apple Support):
    This process involves creating a new user account, logging in to it, and testing for the issue.
    Create a new standard or admin user account in Users & Groups preferences.
    Use these instructions for OS X Mavericks.
    See these instructions for OS X Mountain Lion.
    See this video, or these instructions for OS X Lion.
    Optional: If you have any specific files you wish to test with, copy (don't move) those items to the /Users/Shared folder in the Finder.
    Log out of your current user account by choosing Log Out from the Apple () menu.
    Log in with the new account you created.
    Attempt to reproduce the issue you were seeing in your regular user account.
    After you have completed testing, log out of the test account by choosing Log Out from the Apple () menu.
    Log in as your regular account.
    After you have completed all testing with the test user account, you may want to delete it. You can delete an account in the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences.
    Note: Prior to deleting a test account, make sure you are completely done with it. If you have files in the Guest User you wish to keep, you should copy them to the /Users/Shared folder .
    If you should find, that slideshows only play in a new user account, post back.

  • RFC calls are taking too many work process -- system knock out

    Hi,
    I have an interface remote function, which is going to be called by a java program.
    Data is going to be sent to the system, processed and sent back syncronous to the caller.
    The calls are working on SAP tables, so I needed to lock and unlock the tables. The java program
    is opening many parallell threads and starts them the same time.
    That means, that the sap system is getting attacked by many rfc calls on the same function, with the
    same user at the same time.
    The system has in development 15 dialog work processes set up. If I run that with up to 15 parallell rfc calls, all is working ok!
    Let me now explain the problem:
    I have programmed the table lock, that it´s trying to lock the table at the beginning of the function.
    If it´s not possible it tries it again. At first I have just inserted a one second wait and let that run maximum 3 times. If the table is still locked, it breaks down with an error.
    But because the calls come nearly to exactly the same time to the system, the first call locks all others out, and the rest ran out of the 3 seconds and ended up with an error.
    So I tried to build an endless loop, which is just ending, when the table could be locked again, or when the runtime of 5 seconds has reached. That means, it´s not waiting for a second, if the table is locked, but it´s trying again and again up to 5 seconds.
    That is all ok, because sometime the table is free again and all calls are then processed alright.
    BUT if I now run that with MORE than 15 rfc calls from the java program (15 dialog processes are set up), the system got knocked out! It is using all free work processes for the RFC calls and get stucked. I think, the first call is locking the table, and the got stopped by the system. And then all the others are running in the endless loop....
    So, shouldn´t be there a limit for dialog processes taken by RFC calls? For example here for this user? In this case it should f.e. be set to 10 free processes with 5, which are reserved for other users...
    Any advices?
    The second is, how can I change the lock mechanism, that I don´t use an endless loop? Waiting for one second and doing that 3 times, is not good enough... Because all the rfc calls wait then for one second, up to 3 times, and end with an error....
    Is it possible to wait for half seconds, or defined milli seconds?
    Thank you for all advices!

    Hi,
    What I have understood is you are trying to lock the table in a loop and just checking the duration by explicitly putting wait statement.
    Hope you are NOT locking the entire table rather a particular record in each lock.
    No need to use explicit wait statement rather its better to let SAP thinks when to lock the table T1 when its already locked by another work process. So just set the wait parameter for the Enqueue function module as 'X' and check how it behaves. Until the table is not unlocked the process will wait.
    If you see the wait parameter for the Enqueue function module is not available then create your own lock object for the table and use that. Make sure its getting dequeued else you can understand better
    Cheers
    Somnath

    Option 1
    Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
    Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
    Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • HT201210 My Ipad battery ran out whilst someone was using it - having recharged it it goes d=straight to Restore mode and when connected to IT Tunes, it says unknown error 28  which makes no sense - ideas please?

    My daugter was using our Ipad when the battery ran out.  Having recharged it adn trying to swotch back on is immediately dosplays teh sysmbol for pluging into ITunes.  When doing so the computer says it must restore the Ipad and update it.  When doing so it fails, displaying unknown error 28 - looking at more info, it makes little sense other than a possible hgardware fault.  This is on an orignal IPad with 3G and the operating system hasn't been updated for a while.  Any ideas please.  Mike
