BW vs R3 reporting strategy

Hi Gurus,
I have been requested to put together an overview presentation of considerations on what type of reporting one should still consider performing in R/3 and what one should move or develop in BW.
Has anyone seen material on this area.
Thanks and regards,
Raymond

Hi Raymond,
Please check the below presentation from SAP for the same.

    hi all,
we are working on a document on SAP bi reporting strategy using BO.i have to think of what goes into this document.this is my first time with working on reports coming from SAP BW .
    Thanks

    Hi Usha,
that really depends on what your requirements are. Did you look at the combined roadmap ?

  • Reporting Strategy using NW2004s

    Hi,
    Here is the scenario:
I need to run few (nine)  BW reports daily (actually, first 10 days of every month) and make it available for the users.  Each report runs multiple times (for different entities). The reports need to be formatted nicely (not an excel download). The goal is, every morning any user will be able to get his/her data in nicely formatted way (with company logo, pdf etc.) so that they can just print their report and run into a meeting (if requires). They also need not run the reports, they can just open reports already run and get their data.
So we created COGNOS reports on top of BW. You have to enter parameters in those reports (which is a real pain, because every time you go back to the parameter screen you have to enter every single parameter) and schedule them overnight. In the morning all outputs will be available in a network folder.
Users adore the outputs. But I would like to get rid of this process, now that I am going to implement NW2004s.
So, my question is: how I can replace COGNOS tool by using NW2004s features without hurting my user base. The requirements are: a) outputs need to be formatted pdf (with logo, page number etc.); b) reports should be scheduled; c) outputs can be accessed from a common location d) not all outputs will be available to every user i.e. selective access of outputs.
I will wait for valuable suggestions from experts.

  • Need Information on "Web Reporting in Portal"

    Hi Experts,
I want to gain more knowledge on the reporting side. Is there any   reporting strategy that talks about Portal, web reporting and the Business Explorer. What is the best practice for reporting in NW 04's in most corporations? Is there any case studies? If someone can provide me with that info. will be a great help for me. Forum points are guranteed. Thanks
    Padma K

    Hi Padma,
Most of the Organizations are moving towards web reports due to the following advantages:
    1. The web query can be used without the GUI installed on the system. For Bex you need the SAP GUI installed.
    2. As per SAP the web queries run faster than the bex query.
    3. Bex uses excel which has a limitation of 65,536 rows where as your web query does not have that limitation.
    4. The web query can be accessed from any browsing cafe also which is not the case with Bex Query.
Another important point is that you get EP(enterprise portal) by default installed with BI 7.0(ABAP+Java stack). So EP is used for publishing the web reports. The trend and the recommendation from SAP is to use EP for BI web reports. In most of the cases you would have a separate EP consultant apart from a BI consultant. The web report created by the BW consultant is published as an iview by an EP consultant.
BW with EP - Check these docs:

  • ODS reporting without Bex  Reporting activated

    Hello
As part of a review I have been doing on our current BW data loading strategy I have uncovered a number of ODS objects that have the Bex reprorting indicator active. The consequence of this is that it has a negative impact on performance when loading data into BW, particularly if we have to re-initialise the data.
We currently do not actually report off the ODS object and from the research I have done the consensus seems to be that you should leave the bex reporting indicator turned off unless absolutely necessary and to use an infoset for reporting.
In the coming week we will be faced with having to reload 15 millions+ records back into these ODS objects after doing a redesign so thought it a good time to untick this option.
I should mention that we are using a BW 3.5 system.
Any comments would be appreciated and if the preference is to use an infoset, then can someone give a practical example why you would ever want to set an ODS to allow bex reporting other than the obvious response of not wanting to create an infoset Would i be correct in stating that I wouldn't be able to use indexes to aid performance if i use infosets. I'm reluctant to pass this data into an infocube given the amount of data as it contains asset transaction postings.
An additional side question which is more for my personal interest is whether it is true that it is not preferential to include ODS objects (or infosets) within a multiprovider given that strictly speaking the ODS object is not multi-dimensional. I recently read this in an article and had not considered this before so was wondering if it is correct.
Thank you in advance for your responses.
    Regards
    Mark
Edited by: majohnson on Mar 31, 2011 1:35 PM

    Hi Christoper
Thank you for your response. You seem very passionate about not reporting on ODS objects
What I do find interesting is that there are a number of standard content ODS objects which do have the bex reporting indicator active.
I'm forming the view that if you do not have performance issue considerations loading data into ODS objects and you can control the amount of data selected via reporting using indexes and query restrictions etc then an ODS is still useful for reporting or alternatively the infoset option. That said, this does not apply to the ODS objects I was referring to in my main post and I will be deselecting the bex reporting indicator before re-initialising the data.
I have always been led to believe by people who know more about BW than myself that the infocube is designed for summarised / targeted multidimensional data and that storing line item information in an infocube seems to be contrary to this position.
Our current design approach standard in that we load data into a staging layer (Generally ODS objects, most of which do not allow bex reporting, and some of which contain line item information), then into a transformation layer (generally infocubes) and finally we report out of multi-providers in our reporting layer.
Our general reporting strategy has been that operational style reports which would include line item reporting should be done within ECC and all other strategic, summarised reporting etc is delivered in BW.

  • Adding field to the Planning cube

    Hi Experts,
We use BPS and we have cube to phase data. We read some data from CRM and use this as a source data for phasing opportunities. We would like to add another field to the Cube and populate that field the same way as other fields in the cube. Can anyone help me with this since iam new to BPS and CRM,
    Thanks,
    DV

    Hi DVMC,
This can be done without disturbing the existing business scenario.
As usual create the CRM infoobject ,Create a new multiprovider ,by selecting the existing real time info provider and the newly created infoobject ,further planning on the new multi provider  for attaining the new reporting strategy with out altering the old one.
    Hope this helps,

  • Poor performance with WebI and BW hierarchy drill-down...

    Hi
We are currently implementing a large HR solution with BW as backend
and WebI and Xcelcius as frontend. As part of this we are experiencing
very poor performance when doing drill-down in WebI on a BW hierarchy.
In general we are experiencing ok performance during selection of data
and traditional WebI filtering - however when using the BW hierarchy
for navigation within WebI, response times are significantly increasing.
The general solution setup are as follows:
    1) Business Content version of the personnel administration
infoprovider - 0PA_C01. The Infoprovider contains 30.000 records
    2) Multiprovider to act as semantic Data Mart layer in BW.
    3) Bex Query to act as Data Mart Query and metadata exchange for BOE.
All key figure restrictions and calculations are done in this Data Mart
    Query.
    4) Traditionel BO OLAP universe 1:1 mapped to Bex Data Mart query. No
calculations etc. are done in the universe.
    5) WebI report with limited objects included in the WebI query.
As we are aware that performance is an very subjective issues we have
created several case scenarios with different dataset sizes, various
filter criteria's and modeling techniques in BW.
Furthermore we have tried to apply various traditional BW performance
tuning techniques including aggregates, physical partitioning and pre-
calculation - all without any luck (pre-calculation doesn't seem to
work at all as WebI apparently isn't using the BW OLAP cache).
In general the best result we can get is with a completely stripped WebI report without any variables etc.
and a total dataset of 1000 records transferred to WebI. Even in this scenario we can't get
each navigational step (when using drill-down on Organizational Unit
hierarchy - 0ORGUNIT) to perform faster than minimum 15-20 seconds per.
    navigational step.
That is each navigational step takes 15-20 seconds
with only 1000 records in the WebI cache when using drill-down on org.
    unit hierachy !!.
Running the same Bex query from Bex Analyzer with a full dataset of
30.000 records on lowest level of detail returns a threshold of 1-2
seconds pr. navigational step thus eliminating that this should be a BW
    modeling issue.
As our productive scenario obviously involves a far larger dataset as
well as separate data from CATS and PT infoproviders we are very
worried if we will ever be able to utilize hierarchy drill-down from
    WebI ?.
The question is as such if there are any known performance issues
related to the use of BW hierarchy drill-down from WebI and if so are
there any ways to get around them ?.
As an alternative we are currently considering changing our reporting
strategy by creating several higher aggregated reports to avoid
hierarchy navigation at all. However we still need to support specific
division and their need to navigate the WebI dataset without
limitations which makes this issue critical.
Hope that you are able to help.
    Thanks in advance
    /Frank
Edited by: Mads Frank on Feb 1, 2010 9:41 PM

Hi Henry, thank you for your suggestions although i´m not agree with you that 20 seconds is pretty good for that navigation step. The same query executed with BEx Analyzer takes only 1-2 seconds to do the drill down.
    Actions
suppress unassigned nodes in RSH1: Magic!! This was the main problem!!
tick use structure elements in RSRT: Done it.
enable query stripping in WebI: Done it.
upgrade your BW to SP09: Has the SP09 some inprovements in relation to this point ?
use more runtime query filters. : Not possible. Very simple query.
    Others:
RSRT combination H-1-3-3-1 (Expand nodes/Permanent Cache BLOB)
Uncheck prelimirary Hierarchy presentation in Query. only selected.
Check "Use query drill" in webi properties.
Sorry for this mixed message but when i was answering i tryied what you suggest in relation with supress unassigned nodes and it works perfectly. This is what is cusing the bottleneck!! incredible...
    Thanks a lot

  • Using presentation variable in OBIEE 11g

    Hi,
Is is possible to use a prompt to filter data from two sections of a dashboard?
My dashbaords contains two sections , each pointing to seperate reoport. Can I filter data in the two reports using parameter selected in one prompt?
If not possible , the wht is the way to achieve this.

    Thanks Rondo,
In our project we have e-Biz Oracle ERP application where actuals are captured. Customer is using a third pary tool called Neotix to buid RPD automatically based on Database (oracle) of this application.
Nw we are building new application for planning and budgeting in Hyperion prodicut by oracle where Database is Essbase. I will be creating an RPD for budget/planning reports based on Essbase data source.
For creating on report for Actual Vs Budget, I need to have both Actuals data from e-Biz and Budget data from Hyperion comming out of one RPD.
So I want to merge those two RPDs and build by Actual vs Budget report based on the Business model from this merged RPD.
I want to understand hw to build the buisness model in the merged RPD so that I can get the acutal and budget data together in the same report using Answers. I am using OBIE 11g.
Please tell me wht should be my reporting strategy for achieving this. Can I create single business model for two dataa source which I will import in phyisical layer? How Do I join the two data sources in my RPD, in the business model? What are the challanges to do this kind of model in the merged RPD. ? Do u think there will be challanges to joing Essbabase members (since it is multidimensional cube ) with e-Biz data source in physical layer?
If I build multiple subjects area (one for e-Biz datasouce and another for Essbase data souce) what modeling steps, I need to implement in presentation layer of the merged RPD?
In answers how to I build report so that actual and budget data can be displayed together? Are there any technical challanges to implement such report in Answer? If yes, then what are the ulternative approaches?
I came to know that if it is not possible to get both actual and budet data together in one report, then I should build a dashboard with two sections , and build two reports (one for actuals data and another for dudget data ) and then place one report in one section and another section in another section in the dashboard. Is it a good approach? Is there any better approach?
I want to use one prompt to filter data for actuals and budget . eg. for year 2012, I want to dislpay Actuals as well as Budet values?
    Please provide your expert inputs...

  • SAP BW Environment - What documentation is needed to support it?

I am currently working on an existing SAP BW system, but there is no documentation at all for it. We need to create appropriate documentation to enable easier understanding of the environment going forward.
However, what type of detailed documentation would be needed to fully support an SAP BW environment.
I assume we'd need to create the following types of documents...
    - Architecture Overview
    - Blueprint / Technical Spec
    - Query Spec
    - Authorisations & Security Document
    ...but have I missed anything??

    Hi Mark,
It is also nice to maintain
    - Naming Standards
    - Landscape documnet
    - Enhancement Strategy
    - Reporting Strategy...
    hope it helps....

  • ABAP for removing records in update rule

    hello all,
we have data loading to several infocubes based on sales order type (logical partition).  our entire business and reporting strategy for sales is based on order type.  we have 1 extractor loading these 5 cubes.  we want to code in the update rule to check for each cube a particular value, and if its not this value, remove the record.
example would be loading order type cube zpt1 we want to check the records coming into this cube that the value for characteristic ziden = z1.  if not, remove the record and do not update the cube.  the other cubes are the same.  cube zpt2 checks if characteristic ziden = z2.  if not, remove all other records.
can someone inform us how this coding would look like in the update rules?
    thanks so much

I'm assuming you need code for BW 3.x, since you mentioned Update Rules. There are a couple of ways:
    DELETE
      data_package
    WHERE
      /bic/ziden NE 'Z2'.
    Or
    LOOP AT data_package.
      IF data_package-/bic/ziden NE 'Z2'.
        DELETE data_package.
      ENDIF.
    ENDLOOP.
If you're on BI 7, then you can create a filter on the DTP to the target so that it only extracts the records needed from the source.

  • SAP HANA on BW

Helllo, I have a query regarding HANA roadmap. SAP is going HANA with BW on HANA and then HANA live. I do not know about side cars like what are they? If my company buys HANA live and BW on HANA, what should be our reporting strategy? like how should we distribute our reporting? should we throw everything in BW or should we keep some stuff in ECC? Currently we have CRM, SRM, ECC and BW. I need some suggestions like what other people have done. Any presentation or material will be appreciated if provided.
    Thanks.

Yes Venkat, Majority of the Info Cubes can be eliminated in BW on HANA. Info Cubes primarily store aggregated data, which HANA is capable to calculate on-the-fly using HANA views. So you'll save space(no need to store pre-calculated aggregates), time(no load time) and effort (no InfoCube maintenance). Make the most use of HANA views and Virtual Providers.
Side-Car means running a parallel system (a secondary second system with filtered set of data) on HANA DB for reporting purpose. Data needs to be fed in to the Side-Car HANA system and that can be done in two ways. Either as a batch job using SAP Data Services or as a near-realtime trigger based data replication using SLT.
Check out these links. These provide more details on Side-Car approach as well as other deployment scenarios...

  • Workflow and dashboard question

    Hi there,
I'm project managing a SharePoint implementation and, although I know the basics of SharePoint's capabilities, I'm now diving into more complex requirements related to workflows and dashboards.
Context:  We're working to consolidate our metrics (both quant and qual) from all business units on a quarterly basis.  Some of the metrics are consistent across BUs, others are unique to particular units.
Approach:  I'm thinking we want to create either one form or multiple forms where units can add their baseline goals and progress.  After the data is entered, I want it to aggregate into an excel spreadsheet(s) so we can analyze it and ultimately
create different dashboards and graphs to visually represent the units' progress.
I imagine this is possible, but is this the best approach?  What apps are the best to use?
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

    Hi M,
Using PerformancePoint Dashboard Designer, you can create many kinds of reports for your dashboard. Examples of report types include analytic charts and grids, Excel Services reports, strategy maps, and many other kinds of reports.

  • Turning off incremental renaming when duplicating?

    Hi all.
Is there a way to STOP my old friend After Effects from adding a number to items I duplicate?
This "feature" causes me nothing but confusion, and I waste a lot of time everyday renaming things because of it.
If I have ten things, and I duplicate number 3, it becomes number 11. How am I meant to know it is a new version of number 3?
I would rather rename it myself based on the item's actual name, ideally by being highlighted automatically when I duplicate.
Am sure it must be in a preferences file somewhere?
If not then I will have to log it as feature request.
    Tris

As I understand your folder structure now it looks something like this:
Folder for Comp 1 Folder Vectors A
    asset 1
    asset 2
    asset 3
Folder for Comp 2 Folder Vectors A
    asset 1
    asset 2
    asset 3
Folder for Comp 3 Folder Vectors A
    asset 1
    asset 2
    asset 3
Folder for Comp 4 Folder Vectors A
    asset 1
    asset 2
    asset 3
This may work for you but back when I ran a team working on a huge project this would have confused everybody. It makes as much sense to me as duplicating folders on your hard drive. Put in a production environment that would be disastrous. When the main logo must be edited who knows which copy of the logo in which folder is now the right one.
You have a little more protection in AE because all of the duplicate folders in the Project for Folder Vectors A still point to the same asset. For me it's cleaner to have all assets in their own folders. My folder structure for projects exactly matches the folder structure and naming conventions on the network or on the hard drives. Everything is always in the same place. It looks like this in the finder:
The ending number is a date string formatted year month day so they always sort chronologically. All work for a given client lives in a numbered client folder. Even without a search I can find any project, any asset from any date for any client by simply going to that client's number and scrolling to the right date.
We keep all assets are logged in a database that can be queried from any device with a browser and an Internet connection. All revisions are tracked in the database. There are no duplicate files for anything on the working drives. Change the Master Assets Company Logo and every project for that client gets the change automatically. Old logo versions are archived so we can go back at any time with a single file rename.
This example is from an AE animation with more than 900 layers from .ai files that have between 250 and 3 layers. See the audio change on 20120916 and the new AEP on the same date. That was an update of the file that took (don't tell the client - about an hour because it was easy to replace things, make timing adjustments, and get the job done in a profitable manner. I replaced about 40 layers with new artwork in about 20 seconds, replaced the audio track in about 10 seconds, and spent the rest of the time fine tuning the timing. This re-do was a painless moneymaker because everything is organized.
Here's what the AE Project looks like:
I didn't spin down the ArtWork folder because there are 9 Imported AI as a Comp folders in there as well as a half dozen or more other artwork files.
The search field in the Timeline allowed me to locate layers in the comp that I had duplicated and renamed and isolate them faster than any other method. I think it took 3 keystrokes. The search field in the Project Panel located the new Illustrator layer that was to replace the 40 or so layers in the comp (scattered over 5 minutes). Ctrl/Cmnd + a selected all the visible layers in the timeline. Alt/Option + drag from the Project Panel replaced all instances of the footage. The new audio track was added to the comp. The timing of these layers was adjusted to fit the audio. The comp was duplicated twice to create a total of 3 versions for other minor changes and color adjustments.
There are no duplicate resource references in the project panel. Anyone could have opened this project and made the changes. It's easy for the database to keep track of everything. There's only one place to search for footage, audio, and artwork.
I'm not trying to convert you, just to show you how I have organized projects for 40 years when there are hundreds even thousands of assets in a project that have to be looked at by dozens of people. Before we had computers to keep track of things we had ledger books, file cabinets, and racks for the film. I learned these organizational skills from an editor with a dozen feature films to her credit and a production manager with 30 years in Hollywood. All of these procedures are published in my Quality Assurance / Quality Control manual. The goal is a system that minimizes the probability of errors and has a simple reporting strategy. Answer 3 questions about any project and you know if procedure was followed and if you are using the right materials.

    Hi,
Basically in EKKO table there is a field name FRGZU  -
Release status based on that we can write a logic take the report.
for example A1,B2,C3 ARE THREE release codes in that if A1 released means with check thable whether A1 released once it is release it will go to next release code it iwll check the status again inthe loop....
