Can I capture in ProRes or is it HDV only?

Just want to confirm that HDV/DV are the only capture formats I can use when digitizing from tape. Then I set my timeline settings to Pro Res 422 HQ to edit and export.

Hi MTPO666,
If you have a third party capture card, you can capture other formats. With no capture card, you are indeed limited to DV and HDV capture. In those cases, working with a Timeline setting set to anything but the native DV/HDV format will cause unnecessary processing. If you need ProRes output, you can export in one of its formats in the end.
Good luck,

  • Quality of Clip captured using ProRes and clip converted to ProRes

I have captured the same clip in both HDV 1080160 and ProRes 422.
After editing the HDV version I export it using QT Conversion using the compression type "Apple ProRes." I then use the standard Compressor "DVD: Best Quality 90 minutes" preset unaltered. It looks fine in the Compressor Preview window. I then import the resulting files into DVDSP, and the quality is good.
After editing the ProRes version I export it using QT Movie using the current settings. I then use the standard Compressor "DVD: Best Quality 90 minutes" preset unaltered. It looks fine in the Compressor Preview window. I then import the resulting files into DVDSP, and the quality is bad.
Both clips are "ProRes" when imported into Compressor, and they both look fine in the Compressor preview window. The difference is that one was captured in HDV 1080i60 and converted to ProRes using QT, and one was captured in ProRes and exported as a QT Movie. Surprisingly, at least to me, the clip originally captured in HDV and then converted to ProRes looks much better than the clip originally captured in ProRes when they are imported into DVDSP. Both .mov files are compressed using the same Compressor preset, and the preset is unaltered.
I assumed the clip originally captured using the FCP ProRes preset would yield the better quality, but this isn't the case. I've tried capturing using ProRes 422 HQ, and the results are the same. I must be missing something, but so far I cannot explain it.
    Thanks

I have tried at actual, full screen, using 1080p30 size from the original compressed to 4mbs (something my system can handle without blinking), 720p30, etc. etc. etc.  Nothing stops the jumps. Even the activity monitor shows only 5%-15% processing being used by QT and/or FCP.
I plan to pull my old G5 out of the closet, it runs 10.6.8 and is still rock solid for video editing in FCP7.  If it plays smooth on that 8 year old system then I know it's Mavericks. I'll try that tonight. It floors me though why the original 1080p30 will playback perfect via FCP and Motu, but once I turn of external monitoring and just try to play it via the preview monitor it is jumpy as **** and then the exported file does the same thing.  So strange.  I even deleted prefences of FCP and that does help with screen playback initially, but it always gets jumps in it after playing for a while.
I knew I should not have started using Mavericks and I HATE FCP10.

Man, I thought it was impossible, but apparently not... 6.0.2? added this feature?

Gonna hurt those Intensity sales I'll wager, and I'll bet that the activity monitor on the CPU goes tilt during the process too...

Sony HVR-V1 HDV Tape-Based Camcorder Support
Final Cut Pro 6.0.2 is compatible with the Sony HVR-V1 HDV camcorder, which is capable of recording 1080p24, 1080p25, and 1080p30 footage. You can capture natively or capture to either the Apple Intermediate Codec or the Apple ProRes 422 codec. You can also output back to the Sony HVR-V1 camcorder using the Print to Video command.
To natively capture 1080p25 or 1080p30 footage, you should use the HDV 1080i50 and HDV 1080i60 Easy Setups, respectively. Your footage will retain its progressive scanning even though it will be stored in an interlaced format. You can capture 1080p24 footage using the 1080i60 Easy Setup, but your captured footage will retain 3:2 pull-down in this case.
For transcoded capture of 1080p24 footage, 3:2 pull-down is removed during transcoding, resulting in footage stored in the 1080p24 Apple Intermediate Codec format or the 1080p24 Apple ProRes 422 codec format. You can also capture 1080p25 and 1080p30 footage to either format, although Easy Setups are not included for these formats. In these cases, your captured footage is stored in the 1080p25 or 1080p30 Apple Intermediate Codec or Apple ProRes 422 codec format.
Here are the recommended workflows for capturing from and outputting to the Sony HVR-V1 camcorder with Final Cut Pro 6.0.2:
24p/60i on tape: Capture to the 24p Apple Intermediate Codec or Apple ProRes 422 codec, then output to the HVR-V1 camcorder in 24p/60i mode.
25p/50i on tape: Capture to the 25p Apple Intermediate Codec or Apple ProRes 422 codec, then output to the HVR-V1 camcorder in 25p/50i mode.
30p/60i on tape: Capture to the 30p Apple Intermediate Codec or Apple ProRes 422 codec, then output to the HVR-V1 camcorder in 30p/60i mode.

  • Can not capture from Sony HDV 1080i (recording in 60i)

    Hello
We are trying to capture from the above camera to a Mac Dual G5. We are using FinalCutPro 5.1.2. We are using a FireWire 400 cable to connect to the front of the computer (have also tryed back of Cinema Display). The footage was captured in HDV1080/60i, and we have tried the corresponding formats in Easy Setup (Basic, standard, Apple Intermediate).
The problem: we can control the camera from the Log and Capture windows, but when starting capture, no data is coming in, and the program therefor gives up after a few seconds (displaying a no data error message).
We have tried Batch and Now capture. We can log clips, and get the correct time code, but can not capture those clips due to the no data problem.

This is a good workaround for curing your camera recognition problem with FCP (if that's what it is):
First, check that your Easy Setup / Timeline / Camera or Deck Settings are all exactly the same, then making sure your camera or deck is in VTR mode, try to capture again.
FCP uses a different form of QT than iMovie for capturing, so if the camera works in iMovie (or if it's listed in System Profiler) but not FCP, it obviously means your Mac can see the VTR but FCP can't, so you need to do this QuickTime fix.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852
Follow the instructions carefully and you should have things running in no time - it's quite safe but you must Trash the Receipts AND re-install QT from the link provided.
If the Camera / Deck isn't recognised by iMovie or System Profiler, try resetting the Firewire Bus . . . Turn off the Mac and disconnect the power and all Firewire cables. Leave it for 30 mins then connect back up.
Still not working? Try a different Firewire cable.
Failing all this, try resetting the PMU (Power Management Unit). The method varies from machine to machine, so visit the Apple site and search for it in support.
Don't use iMovie for capturing - it doesn't give you a timecode and that's very important.
Let us know how you get on!

  • Can't capture vid - Canon XL cam FW 400 to FW 800 HD - Apple gurus stumped

Am I REALLY the ONLY person out there using a Canon XL 1 and/or 2, an external hard drive with firewire 800 ports and a G5 and/or Mac Book Pro and working with FCP?!!!!
I made a special trip from Flagstaff AZ to the Apple Store at the Biltmore in PHX, just to stump the Apple genuises with this problem. They asked that I post this on the Apple site's discussion forum.
The verdict was: There seems to be a problem capturing video in FCP ("Unable to initialize video deck" and FCP freezes up) when going from the Canon, via firewire 400 4 pin to 6 pin and saving to an external hard drive via firewire 800. The 400 cable is good, as it captures fine to a drive using a 400 cable. It's just the 400 port on newer, 800 capable hard drives, is limited to one. We tried all different ways of configuring, going from camera to HD thru the Mac, and going from camera directly into the external HD, plugging into the 400 port, and then into the Mac from the HD thru the 800 ports.
The only thing that we didn't try, because it's a rare cable (the Apple store hasn't carried one in over three months), is a 4 pin to 9 pin FW 800 cable.
What am I doing in real life to still keep making money? I capture to my old external HD that has 2 FW 400 ports, then dump the footage to my new HDs with FW 800 ports to work on the project. Time consuming.
Again, all versions of FCP and QuickTime software are up to date. We also used one of their G5s. Also, the problem occurs with both my LaCie Rugged HD and my Western Digital My Book, both purchased from the Apple store. The guru at the store kept referring to a bridge issue???
    Thanks.

Here's my standard "so you are using a Canon camcorder to capture and it isn't working" routine:
Not all Canon cameras have connection issues, but hanging around this site I've come to recognize their ability to connect in FCP is the most problematic of all the camera brands. If you have a Canon camcorder, and can not get it to connect up with FCP, the following is a way to sort through the issues and get it to work. Some are elegant - some are ugly.
    Before we go any farther
-you should be using 'Firewire Basic' as the control protocol. If you aren't, go change it and try again.
-Also, verify that you have a solid installation of Quicktime. You may want to reinstall it using the 'delete receipts' method. Here's how:
Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg
Go to the Apple quicktime site and download the appropriate version of Quicktime to your hard drive.
    Run the Quicktime installer.
    Reboot
Repair Disk Permissions for your System Disk (Disk Utility > Select the system disk > Repair Disk Permissions)
With some confidence that the software installation and camera settings are correct and it still won't capture correctly, you are most likely a victim of the dread 'Canon firewire bus incompatibility problem'. Simply stated: Canon cameras do not play well with other devices on the same firewire bus. And, since all the firewire ports on a Mac connect to one bus - well - you get the picture.
The most direct solution is to purchase another, non-Canon device to use as your capturing machine. The Sony DSR-11 is highly recommended for DV work. Since you have one and it isn't working, perhaps you have a more fundamental problem. Beyond replacing your tape playback device, the path you take depends on the model of computer you own.
    1. If you have a G5 tower or a MacPro, capture to a second internal drive with only the camera attached. If you need to move material to firewire drive, disconnect the camera. A second internal drive is quite inexpensive these days if you do not already have one.
    2. If you have a G5 tower (PCI) MacPro (PCI), G4 powerbook (PCMCIA) or MacBookPro (Expresscard 34) with an available slot, purchase the appropriate firewire card for the slot. Connect your camera to the card and you should be good to go. The new card creates a unique bus and will avoid collisions with the external drives.
    3. If you do not have a slot or a second internal drive and you are stuck with the camera, welcome to the camera/drive shuffle.
    - shut down and remove the external hard drive(s) from the system
    - connect the camera directly to the firewire port of the computer
    - start the camera then the computer
    - capture to your internal (system) hard drive
    - shut down the camera and computer
    - disconnect the camera and reconnect the external hard drive(s)
    - start hard drive(s) and computer
    - move captured files to external hard drive(s)
    - edit
If you output back to tape or wish to view your work on an external Video (NTSC or PAL) monitor, you need to set up the camera to use the firewire out as the A/DV converter or VTR - which means reversing the steps:
    - copy the file back to the internal drive
    - shut everything down
    - disconnect the external drive(s)
    - connect the camera to the firewire port (and the TV to the camera if needed)
    - start the camera then the computer
    - play the file.
One caveat here - You may have difficulty getting the file back to tape without dropping frames. Playing files off of the system drive is very demanding and they may have a hard time keeping up.
All in all, if you do not have the option for second bus (i.e. iMacs, eMacs, iBooks, MacBooks) you may want to think about a computer with expandable options next time.
There is the option of capturing using iMovie, but that brings on it's own set of problems and is not recommended.
    Good luck.

  • Can't capture video using iSight camera in QuickTime 7.4 (92)

OK, I see that there are plenty of "bugs" with Quicktime Version 7.4 (92), but I don't see the problem I am having, posted anywhere. Here goes...
I cannot capture video using my [Firewire] iSight camera on my CoreDuo MacMini. I definitely used to be able to do this. When I go to File>New Movie Recording, I get a back/blank Movie Recording window and that's it. I click on the Red/Record button and nothing happens. The timer doesn't even advance. Just sits there. When I try to stop the recording, I get the following message:
*"Recording failed because no data was received.*
*Make sure that the media input source is turned on and playing."*
I can still capture audio, although had some problems and had to "downgrade" to version 7.3.x and subsequently reinstalled 7.4. Now the audio works but still no video.
    A few things:
    1. YES, the iSight camera works - I can use it in iMovie, iChat, Photobooth, etc. - for both video and audio.
    2. As I mentioned, I tried "downgrading" (using "Pacifist") but still no video.
    3. I re-installed Version 7.4 and the audio problems cleared up, but again, still unable to capture video.
    3. All software updates installed.
    Any ideas???
    Thanks!

See QuickTimeKirk’s posting in the following thread:

    Try the following:
    Trash com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
    It's located in your account:
    HD/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
Delete the file, restart (a new .plist will be created) and quicktime hopefully will work again w/o doing an Archive & Install.
+If you want to do an A&I:+
Do an archive and install of your OS from the OS disc. Stop at the QT upgrade you need.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301270 Scroll down to "Archive and Install”
IMPORTANT: Maker sure you select "preserve user preferences and data" when you performed the A&I?
    Good luck!

Hi. I can't capture from my cannon video camera to FInal Cut or iMovie. ANy help would be greatly appreciated. I don't think my iMac is recognizing the camera. I was told I don't need a firewire, that USB would work if I'm just capturing. If I need a firewire what kind (the one I was sold didn't fit). I'm getting an "unable to locate external device message". Not sure of next steps to try. Thanks.

Forget USB for capturing from tape. USB is only for stills from a Tape Based camera.
    You require a firewire cable.
The camera connection end will be four pin and the Mac is nine pin to the 800 port.
Ask for a 9 to 4 pin firewire cable. Sounds like you have the wrong one as they can also be 4 to 4 or 4 to 6 pin!!
Also you will need the correct Easy Setup in FCE so FCE talk to the camera, exactly which one depends on what type of footage is being sent to FCE from the camera during capture.

  • Can not capture

Upgraded Premiere Pro, Have bought  the new mac computer. Using a Canon DV camera, and can not capture any footage from my DV tapes. Have tried everything!!! Premiere just say Capture Device Offline,. Read through many threads and have got no idea how to fix. Help me Please... I just bought this MAC and now its useless if i can't use it to edit
Even tried all the steps on the web bpage, i do not have a firewire, the USB port i use to plug in are through an AV device (yellow, red, white cables) that then filter through top a USB port cable and plugged into the back of my computer.

I mean it's the new Mac do it's just a thin screen, I would rather leave it and have an external cord.
Why has Mac not allowed for this, they are suppose to be the best & up to date with video software?
Unfortunately, Apple knows best, and will dictate that to its loyal users. They must adapt to the "party line," or move to a PC. That is just the way they think.
    Sorry for the bad news,

Can i capture from an analog 16x9 HD source (SAT-TV) using analog (S-Video) output using a Canopus ADVC-100 into FCP 4.x and preserve the anamorphic aspect ratio? If so, how do I go about doing this (meaning, if this will even work - I'm fairly certain that the SAT box will output the 16x9 flag on s-video - what settings do i use in FCP to capture that aspect?
    Thanx in advance.

actually i am allowed to record from TV... i'm using the analog to do this. HRA allows me to do this - There are plenty of units out there that have tivo and a dvd burner that are legal) - all I'm doing is using my mac. Remember the VCR? this is no different as I am not going digital to digital or bypassing any DRM. Not to mention, I'm taping some docs that aren't even avaialble to purchase. ;(
Also, its just for my personal use. Just to have an archive of the show.

    Hi,
iChat will set up a Video chat window that takes in to account your Processor speed and Internet Speed and to some extent the Buddy's speed.
This then denotes the pixel content of each frame.
OS X 10.6.x tells me this is iChat 5 which in turn mean you have  at least an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor.
This should be capable of 30 frames a sec at  about 640 X 480 pixels  (Check the Connection Doctor (Video Menu) and the Statistics tab during a Chat).
iChat 5 cannot do HD  (Max of 4:3 ratio at the above figures)
After that it depends how you are recording the chat.
    Quicktime X would do it.
iChat will do it itself (if the Buddy agrees)

I was batch capturing 36 clips to a 250GB USB 2.0 HD which had been working fine, and which had >200GB free.
It seemed to be crunching the hard drive in some sort of loop, and capturing had stopped about 20 clips in. I couldn't get out of the batch capture; escape didn't do anything. I couldn't force quit. Ultimately I had to reboot.
Disk Utility says the external drive is fine.
Now, however, I can't capture anything, and all the in and out points I had set on these clips are gone. The media start and end still appear, but no ins and outs.
I tried loading up one of the autosave files, but the same situation exists.
I tried opening a new project, logging a random in and out point, and capturing - but nothing happens. A capturing window opens, but the window is black and doesn't go anywhere - plus, I can't escape out of it.
There is still communication with the camcorder; if I restart FCP, I can control the deck with play, rewind, etc., but I can't capture.
I tried deleting the com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist file - no effect.
    Help!

Glad you were able to re-establish contact.
Now let's think about why this happened.
USB2 has a burst transfer rate that is higher than Firewire 400 and on the surface seems like a likely candidate for a capture scratch drive. However, when we look more closely at what constitutes a video stream we'll see it is not short little bits of data that can be written (like a Word document) - it is a veritable torrent of bits flowing down the data pipe. If the Word bits get interupted, no matter, the drive will finish placing them when it gets back to the file - it is a static document and will not be harmed by the interuption. But video a highly time sensitive sequence and if it is interupted, there will be serious consequences for the file integrity.
To put this is a more technical way, USB does not operate in an isosyncronos manner - that is it does not have the ability to command the entire bandwidth of bus and so, if push comes to shove, the data stream (aka your capture) will be compromised. The result of a compromised write operation is as you have described.
The long term solution to your issue is to either switch to firewire 400/800 drives or SATA internal/external drives. USB2 is not only not supported, it is decidedly not recommended.
    Good luck.
