Can I really not print in black only when the cyan cartridge is empty?

I have a message that the cyan cartridge is empty and that I cannot print until it is replaced. It's a new cartridge, less than a month old. I took it out and shook it, and can tell there's plenty of toner left. But my primary question is, why can't I print in black only without the cyan cartridge being replaced?

Hi,
Any ink is required to maintain the printhead and service the printer.
Print head nozzles get clogged over time, most commonly by microscopic dust particles or dried ink. Nozzles are kept clean by servicing, including wiping the surface with a small rubber wiper, ejecting ink through the nozzles to purge particles and to prevent drying and pumping with ink to clean the print head. To keep the printer ready to print in either colour or black, these service routines typically consume some ink from every cartridge, even if only black or colour is used in the document being printed.
Oce the is not enough ink to service the printhead any depleted ink cartridge must be replaced to resume prnting:

  • How can I print in black when the colour cartridge is empty

    Hi,
I have an HP Photosmart 5510 that I use ONLY for simple black on white printing for work.  I have it set to black ink only but today, a wet and cold Sunday night when I really really need the d*mned thing to work because it's month end and I have to send copies of all my worksheets to head office, I get an error message to the effect that it won't allow me to print using the brand spankin' new original HP black cartridge until I buy some totally unwanted colour cartridges to keep it company.
Am I really being held to ransom like this?  Are Hewlitt Packard so short of cash that their corportate monolith will falter and fall if I don't buy expensive consumables whose only function is to print in colours I have no wish or need to use?
Am I really unable to use the black print facility on *MY* printer until I've fed yet more cash into the greedy maw of some US blue chip company?
If the answer to any of the above is yes then tomorrow evennig after work I shall have to go to the store where I bought my HP printer and very publically tell them were to shove it and why.  I shall seek out a new printer  from ANY MANUFACTURER OTHER THAN HP that allows me to print in black only and I shall make it a mission to spread the word.
Of course it's entirely possible that HP have a simple fix that will allow me to use black cartridges only in which case I shall be delighted to continue buying original HP black cartridges on a monthly basis.
On the other hand I do need a reply urgently because as I say, it's Sunday night and this problem has put me hours behind for work tomorrow as it is.
    Thanks  (I hope).
    Andrew

    Hi,
Firstly I'd like to say: I'm not working for any computer vendor, both hardware and software. From my understanding, the technology to make those inject printers dictates why we need all inks to print when we only need black.
    1. On some printers which ONLY use 2 ink cartridges (black & tri-color) we can print black only if the tri-color cartridge still has ink at least one color
    2. For many other printers which have individual color ink cartridges we need all of them to print even we only print black only. Printers may stop during the warming up process.
    3. For some printers, we can force them to print black only without ink in one color cartidge but this would more damage than good because this will shorten their lives.
One thing I've mentioned few times. Vendors (all of them) should allow users to SCAN without inks. But as mentioned above, printers may stop during the warming up process and first of all THEY ARE PRINTERS.
    Regards.

  • Photosmart 7525 Windows 7 How can I choose to print in black only?

HP Photosmart 7525 All-in-one printer. Windows 7 software.
Is there a way to choose to print text in black only, even though there may be color on the page? When I choose to print from Microsoft Word, it does not give me an option, and I can't find reference anywhere in instruction manuals. Can someone help me please?

    Hi,
The are 3 options for Grayscale/Greyscale:
None (or Off): print in colors (including black )
High Quality grayscale: mixing all colors to make black & white
Black Ink Only: Use black in only to print.
You can set one option as default and change each print job to meet your need. Please use the following steps to set default:
Double click printer icon on desktop,
    Click Advanced in Paper/Quality tab
Select the one you want (above list)
    Click Apply/Ok to get out.
    Regards.

  • My 6110 will not print in black only or gray scale when commanded

    What should I do?

I have a C310a printer and quit printing black suddenly.  I tried everything even a new hp black cartiidge.
Does anyone out there have any answers?

  • My printer will not print in black except for the top and bottom headings. The rest prints in turq.

I usually choose grayscale, but it is being ignored. Today, the turq. has changed to a green.

    My printer is a Photosmart 3210 all-in-one.

  • There is no option on my MG8100 printer to print in black only. Grayscale uses all colours to print

I have a MG8100 and it seems that there is no way to print in black and white only. The grayscale option uses all the colours including black to print. I have scoured the web and there appears to be no solution. I have gone through a ton of colour ink just printing black and white documents. It has cost me a fortune and I've worked out that I can print my black and white documents cheaper by going to the print shop. As far as I am concerned this unbelievable. A printer that doesn't give you the option to print using black ink only, when you want to print documents! And its not advertised or made known in any way. You have to buy the product and then find out later that it does not have a black and white print option. It seems there are a lot of people out there that are unhappy about this, and the "problem" seems to go quite far back. Why haven't Canon responded by adding this feature?! I wont say it here, but I think it must be obvious. Brings to mind the story of housecleaning product manufacturers that increase the size of the closures so that consumers will use more of the product, which is actually wasteful, so as to shorten the purchase cycle. This leaves a really bad taste in my mouth. I'm flogging my MG8100, and I am done with Canon for good!

Hi everybody, I have 2 Pixma printers, a MG8100 and a MG5300, they are quite good if you print in colorBeware if you want to print in B&W when the colors tanks are empty, the printer will simply lock itself and forbid any printing before you replace the 3 (or 4 on MG8100) color tanks. This is stupid for you but a good way to force a customer to buy stuff he doesn't need. Even if you are not printing a lot of color tasks (I do 80% B&W) those tanks are emptying very (I mean very) fast.Based on other reports I tried with or without grayscale settings, with or without duplex, I even removed the empty color tanks to try to indicate the printer that I just wanted B&W, no way. Dear Canon, there is a B&W button on those printers for scan and copying usage, why don't you extend it for printing ? Another issue worth reporting, there are 2 B&W tanks on those printers, for some reason the printer doesn't use the big one when the small is empty or the other way around but reserve one for some tasks (like grayscale and color tuning) and the other one for pure B&W, so you may have to replace a B&W tank when the other one is full, clearly Canon wants you to buy a lot of ink :-)

  • How to set default printing in black only

    Greetings,
I'd like to set my default printing with Firefox at black ink only, which I can do individually prior to printing a page, but it reverts to color after that printing. But if I set the size at, say, 80%, that becomes the default setting, or if I set portrait/landscape for a single printing, that becomes the default setting. Why can't the desired black-ink only setting default like the size/portrait/landscape setting? What I want to do is set the printing permanently at black only, and the size at 100%, but allow one-time printing at landscape or portrait, or sizes less than 100% without those settings becoming the default. How can I do this? Thanks for any help
    Best wishes, Tom
I've tried the help solutions on the website to no avail....

    Greeting ideato,
Thanks so much for your reply. I've clicked on the Firefox button at upper left, then Print, then Properties, then Advanced, under which is listed Printer Features (I have only 1 printer), below which is a line with Print in Grayscale, clicking on which has has 3 options: Off (apparently default), High quality Grayscale, and Black Ink Only. I click on the latter, and click on OK for this window and others in the sequence, and it'll print in black only for the present printing, but will revert to color for the next printing, 'though like I said, if I change the size to 80% or from portrait to landscape, those settings will remain. I can't figure it out. Again, thanks for any help.
    Regards, Tom

  • My 6520 Photosmart will not print in black

I have been having problems with my printer not printing in black, I have the HP All in one photosmart 6520, I have went through the process of cleaning the printer head several times with no results, I have replaced the ink cartridges so they are full and inserted correctly, color seem to be okay. What else can I do, throw the printer in the trash and get a new one?I receive no error message and I am operating in Windows 7
Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions.
    Bruce

    Hi Easylearner,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I see you are running into some print quality issues on your HP Photosmart 6520, you are unable to print in black ink after replacing the cartridge.
I would like you to continue here: Printer Does Not Print Black Ink or Color Ink, or Prints Blank Pages, I understand you may have done some of these steps already but I need you to complete all steps in order to resolve the missing black issue you are experiencing.
Please note: There are three printhead cleaning stages. Complete all three stages if necessary. If the printhead is badly clogged, it might require another cleaning cycle. If so, wait 30 minutes after the last (third) cleaning stage to start the first stage of the cleaning process over again.
If you are still unable to print in black ink, I suspect the issue may be the printer and not the cartridge. Please let me know which Country/Region you are in as well as the product Warranty status: HP Warranty Checker
I hope to hear from you soon.
    Thanks,
    HevnLgh

  • Canon print driver: how to print pure black only

We love our MP610 printer. But on Mac OS 10.5.8 Leopard we cannot figure out how to print black-only using the big cartridge. We've been using grayscale, but this does not give true blacks, and we suspect is using color ink + the small black cartidge.
Our goal is simply to conserve the expensive color cartridges, only using color when it is needed.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

Judging by my Canon printer, the large black cartridge is for solid black only: it doesn't do grayscale. As you've found, grayscale is handled by the colour set. 'Solid black' would apply to text and objects such as lines and rectangles where the colour has been set to full black, not to black within colour or grayscale images.

On the printer driver documentation, Page 5, in the Imaging setting, although the options are not specifically shown, there should be an option on that screen of the print driver to click and select "B/W" or 'black and white' or 'grayscale' or 'monochrome' as Print Mode rather than the "Full Color" option shown in the illustration below.
You access these settings once you have selected 'Print' from an app.
If necessary, you might need to click on the 'Down arrow' button next to the printer name (OS X 10.6), or 'Show Details' button at the bottom of the print dialog box (OS X 10.8) to see additional settings.
