So I just updated my very new iPhone; from iOS 5.0.1 to iOS 5.1.1.
The problem is that I used to use my phone as a hotspot for my laptop(HP Pavillion), but now it isn't working!
I had some trouble with my former iphone 4S but then I got a completely new one. Actually I'm not sure if it's the iOS 5.0.1 or the iOS 5.1.1 update that is giving me trouble.
I also tried to see if my laptop wasn't updated, but it is now updated and it's still not possible to connect to the internet with my iphone.
What should I do?? Is it possible to downgrade to an earlier firmware?? How do I do this??

Yes lucky me . If all troubleshooting has been done in Resolve iOS update and restore errors and if you have at least taken it into a store where they could try a restore themselves then that would suggest a hardware fault with the iPhone.
If you are out of warranty then it is correct that they would quote you an out of warranty service fee. From here it would be a matter of trying the steps above and if you have already tried then doing the service when you do have the cash.

I have a new MBRP. On wired ethernet it can be used as a wireless hotspot. Since 802.11ac gets better range I'd like to use it with 802.11ac as a hotspot for my older 802.11g/ndevices. Can I do that ?

I know that if I use wired ethernet then the MBRP can be a wirelss hotspot for other devices. Since the MBRP supports 802.11ac and I have a new 802.11ac wireless router it gets much better range than my older 802.11/n devices. There are places in teh house where the MBRP connects to the wireless but where older 802.11g/n devices lare out of range. In those rooms I'd like to use my MBRP connected to the network wirelessly using 802.11ac as a hotspot for the nearby 802.11 g/n devices. Anyone know if that can be done and how to do it ?

Using any other type of charger would void your warranty if it damaged the iPhone.
You can just charge the iPhone while it's plugged into the USB on the computer. No need to have an extra adapter.

My iPhone 5 wouldn't start after I turned it off a few minutes after writing this. It went into recovery mode and I had no choice but to connect to iTunes on PC and restore.
I restored to factory setting first, just to validate my phone was okay. For a second consecutive iOS update, the iPhone 5 did not update smoothly while connected to PC and iTunes - I had to retry two times before the progress bar for the update showed. (The exact same problem with the restart occured when I updated to 7.0.4.)
The good news is that I was ultimately able to restore the iPhone 5 to factory settings while running iOS 7.0.6. I did have a backup from about a month ago lying around and was able to successfully restore with that as well, so the damage done is almost negligible since I had my contacts, notes, mail, etc. backed up to iCloud.
Once I completed both restores, the sync with iTunes worked fine.

Try resetting your phone, hold the home and sleep/wake button down until the apple symbol comes up, then release. If that doesnt work, you may have damaged your phone and need to take it to an apple genius bar.
