Can I vary fan speeds according to temperature?

Hi. I have a KT3 Ultra-ARU motherboard, and I've been wondering ever since I got it - is there a way for me to slow or shut down various fans if the computer is cool enough? I have 4 case fans, a PS fan, CPU fan and a video card fan so as you can imagine my computer is very loud. They're all plugged into the motherboard somehow, so you'd think there'd be a way to shut some of them off or at least slow them down when the computer's just sitting there idle on a cool day. BTW I'm dual-booting right now between Windows XP Pro and RedHat Linux 9.0, so I guess there might be a windows-only solution for this one (??).

there are a several options:
1) you control the fans with panel mounted controls. search the net for rheobus for more inf.
2) automatic control via a device like DigitalDoc5. take a look at this beautiful device at:

3) replace your fans with smart fans. these are fans which contain a thermal sensor which speeds up the fan to go faster when the heat increases automatically. i have several of these. they come in 80mm as well as other sizes. see them at:

How can I control fan speeds in Win7 on a MBP-R for gaming?

I have a MacBook Pro with Retina Display. It has had Windows 7 installed and I want to play some 3D action games. How do I stop internal parts from overheating? I intend to use a USB cooling pad but that'll do nothing if the internal fans remain at idle speed.
The only Windows fan speed control utility I could find was the 4-year old SpeedFan which fails to detect the presence of any internal fans. I'm not impressed with the Windows community's failure to offer more and better than this tired old relic.

(1) Is the hardware still capable of automatically accelerating the fans as temperatures rise while gaming in Windows?
(2) What In Windows forces the MBP-R to lock the nVidia GPU into continuous duty and ignores Intel GPU?
(3) What control does the user have for (2)?
(4) How can I protect my MacBook Pro/Retina from overheating while playing PC games, apart from not playing games?

How can I adjust fan speed?

Hi; I have an HP Comaq Presario CQ57. The fan has gotten pretty loud; even when I first turn on the laptop and it is well ventalated in a cool area it is obnoxiously loud. Is there any way I can turn the fan off or adjust the fan speed? (I know it's risky so if you're going to tell me that please make sure you answer my question as well )

You can try a program called speedfan which is a free download

It's a pretty hard thing to use but it does give a readout of temperatures, which is useful even if you can't use it to adjust fan speed. Also go into the BIOS (F10) and see if there is a fan always on option and if so deselect it.
The fan is running fast for a reason. It is a symptom not a disease. Very likely the computer needs to be opened up and cleaned out inside. Post back if you want some direction on how to tackle that chore.

To adjust fan speeds, use smcFanControl > http://www.eidac.de/ Be careful with fans because you mustn't set a fan speed higher than 2000 rpm. You will have problems in the future if fans work at a higher speed all the time

About the rules (logic) between the fan speed and the temperatures?

Well, I've had a bad experience with my MBP last week: my motherboard busted and had to replace it... Expensive part to replace!
After thinking about the reasons why it failed, my attention has been directed toward a possible motherboard overheating, which might have damaged the motherboard.
I've installed the iStat Pro widget and regularly monitor temperatures displayed vs. fan speed. I do get a bit nervous when I see a 84 oC CPU temperature and idle (2000 rpm) fan speeds. My GPU temperature is also sometimes in that range.
My questions are:
1) does anybody know the rules (logic) between the various temperatures (CPU, CPU heatsink, GPU, GPU heatsink, enclosure, HD, etc.) and the fan speeds?
2) other than with the fews apps out there, is there a way to customize the rules? Is there a text file or a plist file somewhere where I can change the rules?

If your idle speeds are 2000 rpm, you have one of the original Core Duo MBPs. For me, I see fans on my 17" CD MBP speeding up once temps get into the upper 70s °C.
Apps like smcFanControl allow you to alter the setpoints. Note that some users who installed smcFanControl, then uninstalled it, report symptoms like yours - namely, the fans remain at idle no matter how hight the temps get, until a thermal shutdown is triggered (somewhere close to 100 °C).

MSI Z87-G43 can't control fan speed

Hi, i just bought an MSI Z87-G43 and i'm using a i5-4670 on it (yeah, 4670 without the K).
I wanted the minimum noise as possible so i bought a Noctua NH-U12P SE2
Like the pictures shows it has 2 fans.
I connected the 2 fans on cpu1 and cpu2 fan and both BIOS and Commander Center can see them correctly, but both of them can't change the rotation speed.
Those fans have a 3 pins connector.
How can i do it? Now my CPU is cool and i like it, but a little more hot for a little less noise is a good deal (and my goal!)

As alternative you can get a fan controller like Sunbeamtech Rheosmart PCI Fan Controller, it should allow to use 4pin PWM singnal and convert it into voltage control,

Tweak the balance between fan speed and CPU temperature / Dell M6400?

I have a Dell Precision M6400 17" laptop. It runs really well on Arch, but is a bit noisy. It has always been noisy, btw, but I recently noticed that the CPU fan was blowing a lot of air even though the CPU temperature is lower than 70°C. I also have a macbook air, and its CPU runs at 70°C all the time, which seems to be normal. I would like my m6400 to behave similarly, and I'm sure someone here know how to change that

When I start the laptop, its CPU fan stays at its minimal speed only for 1 or 2 minutes, then increases its rotation speed to a second level. It reaches it maximal speed only under heavy load, when the CPU reaches >80-95°C. I would rather let the CPU run a bit hotter before the fan starts to blow: let's say the fan could enter its intermediary speed between 70°C and 85°C instead of 55-80°C, and blow at is its maximum speed beyond that.
I checked the Fan Speed Control wiki page, but lm-sensors is not able to show me the status of the fans. Any idea ?

PS: the temperature of the GPU is not reported by sensors, and nvidia-settings reports around 60°C. Its dedicated fan is very quiet.

I'm in the same situation from at least 1 month ( INTEL CORE 2 EXTREME X9100, 3.06GHz with 8GB ram, one solid state disk 128 GB, and one sata disk 500GB)
My dell M6400 has dual boot: ubuntu and windows7. The fan works a lot and continuosly in both environment and this is the reason because I have doubt that the origin of the problem is in hardware problem?

Can't control fans speed after upgrading to kernel26 2.6.31 [solved]

Mother board is ASUS P5Q-SE. After upgrading pwm sensors disappeared. I can get temp and fans speed but not set. Any ideas? :-\

"This works for me" is a little vague. What worked for me specifically was to start with your link and drill down two levels of links to this webpage, http://hansdegoede.livejournal.com/7932.html, which explained what the problem is and that the workaround is to add acpi_enforce_resources=lax to the kernel command line in /boot/grub/menu.lst.
Someone who understands this issue better than I do should probably amend the appropriate sections of the wiki (lm_sensors, fancontrol, et al).

Fan speed and computer temperature

i have 2 questions:
how fast can macbook´s fan work?
in between which temperatures should a macbook work with(not environment temperatures, i mean internal temperatures)?

We have had discussions on this before From those the pre Santa Rosa MacBooks seem that most operate around 60º C in normal operating and the fans usually between 1500 RPM and 3000 RPM. When streaming video or other CPU intensive stuff it will run around 80º C and 6000+ RPM. Some run cooler some run a little hotter.
Haven't seen any reports yet of the new MacBook temps.

Can someone tell me the ti4800se fan speed and cpu temperature...

Help with Fan Speed/Temperature Monitoring - 875P Neo Series 2.0

My mobo manual doesn't explain the monitoring facilities available on this board and I would like confirmation of the following:
My P4 Northwood CPU Fan as supplied with P4 is connected to CFAN1 and provides monitoring of temperature and fan speed and also permits fan speed control.
My Northbridge Fan as supplied with mobo is connected to NBFAN1 and provides monitoring and control of fan speed. No temperature monitoring available.
My mobo provides monitoring of system temperature but doesn't say how this is measured and at what location.
There are two other 3-pin fan headers on the mobo; one is labelled SFAN1 with Gnd, +12V and the third pin NC and the other is labelled PFAN1 with Gnd, +12V and Sensor pins.
My new Antec 500W SmartPower 2.0 PSU has a monitoring cable that is wired with a black Gnd wire and a blue Sensor wire and, according to the Antec manual, is supposed to provide fan speed monitoring if connected to PFAN1 - I have tried this and get no information showing in either SpeedFan or Sandra. ???
My new Case fan, an Antec SmartCool, also has a monitoring cable but only has the third pin wired, presumably a sensor wire, and presumably could also be attached to PFAN1 instead of the PSU signal connector to provide fan speed monitoring. ??? Obviously I cannot connect both the PSU and Case Fan sensor cables to the mobo because the SFAN1 connection has no sensor pin connected; I presume this one is just a power supply to a fan as an alternative to using a supply line direct from the PSU.
Can anyone advise me on the correct use of the PFAN1 and SFAN1 connectors and what they are capable of.

- System temperature is measured at the Winbond W83627HF sensor chip located in front of your PCI slots.
- PFAN1 does indeed monitor PSU fan speed if the PSU has a fan speed reporting header. Not supported by some monitoring software (if Speedfan can't detect it, it doesn't support it. At least not until Alfredo's next revision).
- SFAN1 provides power only, no monitoring.
- Try a different monitoring software and see if it can detect the sensor monitoring your PFAN1. There are other monitoring software out there you can try, such as the CoreCenter that came with your motherboard, or Motherboard Monitor 5 or PCWizard (though you cannot adjust fan RPM through those programs).

What's normal range temperature and fan speed for a 27" iMac?

I have a new iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), 3.4 GHz Intel Core i5, 8GBs ram, and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M 2048 MB.
Smc fan control reads up to about 131°F and around 1200rpm fan. Is this within normal range? At what point should I be worried?

1200 rpm is the minimum fan speed according to iStat Menus and other sources. If your fans are at the minimum that means your system is not concerned about the temperature. On my system currently the fans are at minimum (1199rpm) and the temperature is 104°F. The room ambient temperature is 74°F. Your system looks normal to me. By the way, my system is also a 27-inch late 2013 iMac with the 3.5ghz I7 CPU. The Haswell CPUs are very efficient and low power.

Toshiba L750-A218 BIOS 3.30, Fan Speed

Hi, here is a new issue I am experiencing after the BIOS update. I feel the internal fans are spinning all the time by placing my hands near the keyboard. Fan speed according to Toshiba software is 50%+ while I am not doing anything. On the other hand, it was at 25% before the update. Did they update the BIOS to give the laptop more ventilation or something. This is weird. CPU temp is 45%. I have upgraded from 3.00 to 3.30, for your information. Thanks.
P.S. The fan speed is stuck at 50%+ and wont go lower than that. Its always on, I can feel it while resting my hands and typing.

Did you get any where with the fan issue? I've a L750-171 (UK), experiencing the same fan issue. Like you say even when idle, the CPU report around 45degrees (using Core Temp app) and using Toshiba Health app 45%. I think the processor is rated to max 100 degrees so % and degrees map up one to one. Anyway the fan never drops below 50%. My complaint is the noise. I use my laptop in a quiet room so it's pretty annoying. My other tosh laptop doesn't whine like this.
The only fan related option I've adjusted is via the "power options" control panel applet.Clicking "change plan settings" then "Change advanced power settings" scroll down to "Toshiba Power Saver Settings v8.9.4.64. From here open "Cooling Methods" and then changed "Plugged in:" to "Battery Optimized" - I was hoping this would reduce the fan speed but didn't seem to have any effect.
I've updated my BIOS from 2.7 to 3.4 - same issue continues.
I've looked at the bios settings, but see nothing related to fan speed and temperature.

Automatic fan speed adjustment?

Currently I have the app SMCFan running on all of my Macs to regulate the fan speed in order to cool them down. And on all of these Macs I have different presets that control the RPM of specific fans. I have few different fan settings on my iMac according to the intensity of the task and the temperature of the hardward (I use MiStat to monitor my computers' temperature).
Here is the issue, my brother play games all the time and usually it drives the GPU and CPU up to 60-70C all the time and I don't want to turn my fan to maximum or over maximum the entire time including when its idle just to make sure it runs fast when my brother is playing games because: 1) it can potentially shorten the fan's lifespan, 2) it gets extremely loud especially on the iMac where the fan is gigantic. I can only go in and adjust the fan speed when I notice my brother is playing game via Screen Sharing from my MacBook Pro but I'm not always looking out for when he's playing games so there are times when the GPU shoots up to 70-80C and I won't know to adjust the fan speed.
For that, is there a way for me to set my iMac, or any of my Macs, that when the CPU or GPU activity hits a certain point (by % of activity or the temperature reading of the processor itself) it will increase or decrease the fan speed according to my settings automatically? If there is it would be extremely helpful to keep my iMac last longer.

You are trying to fix something that isn't broken.
OS X controls the fan automatically to protect the cpu.
Third party fan control software is not needed and may, if configured improperly, result in damage to the cpu although an Intel cpu is supposed to shutdown if it gets too hot.
The minimum fan speed is 2000 RPM. It will start to increase around 70 degrees C.
