Can iMovie take advantage of a 12 Core Mac?

We are planning on purchasing some Mac Pros before they are discontinued later this year.
We mainly use iMovie 06 but occasionally iMovie 11.
I have read on other Apple forms that most software cannot take advantage of the extra cores. Does anyone know with any degree of certainty if iMovie 06 can take advantage of this additional processing power.
We are trying to decide between 6 core or 12 core Mac Pros.

I doubt it
You are probably right.  Apparently there is NO WAY to know for sure.
Thank you for sending the link.  I read the following, which I completely agree with.
"iMovie HD 6 is still the preferred version for working with the DV over Firewire codec. Newer versions of iMovie lose resolution in rendering this older codec. It also makes the best looking Standard Definition DVD's."

  • Does iMovie take advantage of quad core processing?

Subject line says it all. I just ordered a new quad-core iMac and I'm hoping I'll see a speed bump in Final Cut Express and iMovie, and not just Final Cut Studio...
    Anyone know for sure?

actual version of iLife is single-core only.

  • Can FCE take advantage of 4 cores?

I was wondering if Fce can take advantage of the 4 cores that the mac pro offers. If not, can it at least use 2? If so, can you use the remaining cores to do other tasks without affecting FCE? (Garageband, ect). Any advice would be appriciated. Would one reccomend using a mac pro for heavy FCE and livetpe rendering work as well as heavy idvd work (also, can idvd use multiple cores for proccessing data)?

IMHO if your processing needs drive you to Final Cut on a Quad Core MacPro, you should be looking at Final Cut Studio, not Final Cut Express.
That said, OSX including Tiger has always provided full symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) support and also handles assignment & management of multithreaded tasks to the processors. In the majority of applications users do not have the option of assigning specific tasks to specific processors.
You can look at Apple's performance comparisons for FCP and quite a few other apps on quad MacPros vs. quad G5's. But don't get carried away by the numbers, remember that these comparisons were done in laboratory conditions. For what it's worth, an advertised 30% or even 50% increase in processing power doesn't impress me, between those being optimized comparisons and the reality that all sorts of factors (memory, for one) can eliminate the advantages of more or faster processors.
I'd suggest you look at it this way - a quad core machine gives you much more computing power than a dual or single core machine; and that aggregate computing power is available to all the applications you run on it.

  • TS4006 Can I take advantage of this feature if I ALREADY lost my Mac? I did not activate the setting ahead of time.... because I hadn't planned on losing it yet.

I recently lost my MacBookPro along with the rest of the contents of my backpack. Left it in the back of a taxi..... Thing is, I wasn't planning on doing that and so I hadn't activated the necessary setting on my computer to utilize FindMyMac.
Is there any way I can still take advantage of this feature and find it?!?! Please help.
    Thanks

You don't mention which feature.  I presume "Find My Mac".  No, those have to be set up before losing the hardware.  Contact the taxi company and the police.

  • How many cores can FCP take advantage of?

I'm currently on a Core 2 Duo processor and FCP seems to range in about the 150-170% (according to my activity monitor) when timeline rendering. Can it do more/go faster with a processor with more cores? Or, is there a limit to how many cores the software can actually use?
Same question for Compressor... which, I believe I've read somewhere, can take advantage of at least 8 cores.

Thanks, Red... I really appreciate your response.
yeah, I think I'm clear on core vs. processor (I have one processor with two cores). I'm using a cluster to rope both of my cores into maxing out for Compressor.
Both of my cores appear to be working during a FCP timeline render (going to about 150-175% combined). I guess my original question was, is that about as good as FCP gets, regardless of the amount of cores and/or processors? The thought that prompted me to ask this question is, if FCP is capable of utilizing more cores, why isn't it currently pegging at closer to 190%, like my 2-core cluster does when I'm using Compressor?
Since I'm hearing that FCP isn't mult-processor capable, if I had a quad core, single processor would my timeline renders be going faster? Or, again, is FCP maxing out its capabilities with just my two cores?
    Thanks all.

  • How can I take advantage of the SPDIF out..?

Hi all, as my subject says, can anyone recommend the best setup where i can take advantage of the spdif output in my imac?  I am setting up pro tools and/or logic 8 and want high fidelity sound i can with this great machine .
Links with info would be great, I basically want to send the digital signal into to Yamaha self powered studio speakers.
Is there a cable I can purchase by itself?
Thanks for any help in advance.

The cables can be found most anywhere.  For cables and adapters I always recommend searching www.monoprice.com first.  They have high quality cables for very good prices.  As an example search for TOSLINK at their site to find optical cables and related components.  It's where I got mine.

  • I can't take advantage of ISP's 10MB broadband

My ISP just upgraded from 1.5MB to 10MB downloads. All I can download is 2MB. I called for a repair man and his PC connected at 10.2MB. When I connected my PC that was in deep storage, it also connected at 10MB. What do I have to do so I can take advantage of the faster download? I'm connected from the cable modem by ethernet to my Mac. It's the same on both of my Macs. Thanks!
MacBook Pro and Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

indeed. it seems several people have reported that they are now getting the correct DL speeds from their ISP. it was odd that the update said it would address comcast issues, but it seems like a bigger problem than just with comcast. as long as it worked. go apple.
ps, of course, they release this less than a month after i stopped having comcast! go figure!

  • Can InDesign take advantage of quad core processors?

I've been having trouble importing a large excel table in InDesign CS3 on windows 7,  and found that indesign was only using 1 of the 4 cores of my processor, maxing it out and crashing because of it.  So my question is, is there a way to make CS3 use all 4 cores, or failing this, does InDesign CS6 use quad cores?
Thanks for any help on this.

I installed InDesign CS6 trial, but this problem still persists.  I import the file (about a 14000 line excel table, with formatting (this is required for what I'm doing)), but it only uses 1 core of the processor. Only 25% of what it could be using to do this.  Photoshop cs3,4,5,6 use all quad cores and flys!
Anyone know how I can get this to work please?  I'll try anything that might help.
ps I can't import without formating as I need some items to be styled so I can do a find and replace on them, to add indexing elements later.

  • WHY DO APPLE APPS NOT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF AN 8-CORE'S SPEED?

I bought a new 8-core, 3Ghz Mac with 16GB of RAM because I always by the "best" when upgrading, so what I buy lasts as long as possible.
The unfortunate thing I discovered, is the FCP and Motion neither take full advantage of the processor speed.
Apple tells me there is a limit to the processor speed they will function - as well as the amount of memory.
This seems strange since Apple makes the "box".
I'd be content with all program dynamically sharing the "real estate" but right now the only advantage it being able to work in two apps at the same time. Since that doesn't happen that often, I'd trade that advantage for faster processing per app.
If anyone knows how to remove the “speed-limiter” for apps on a multi-proc Mac, please let me know.
    Dan

I appreciate the desire to purchase something that will last and has quality. Still, "best" is a very slippery concept and is often confused with "more stuff" and/or "more expensive stuff".
I'm reminded of the potential folly of the "I always get the best" attitude when I go out to dinner and the person deciding on the wine simply picks the most expensive thing they can find on the wine list. They did not consider the nature of the food (spicy or subtle, acidic or basic, etc) and how the wine will react. They just equated cost with quality. And while the most expensive bottle on the list may well be an extraordinary vintage, it also may be equally lost on the palates of the diners if it does not suit the food that evening.
Since "best" is term of relativity, that is, it references a comparison between things, the real question might be "best for what"? Best compared to what other things under what circumstances?
Did you define the tasks you wanted this machine to accomplish and investigate other options to accomplish these tasks? If not, how can you have decided this is the 'best' machine?
In the for what it's worth category, FCP has been and will likely remain for the near future a 32bit program. It is in the nature of 32bit computing to be limited to 4GB of addressable RAM. Apple does not decide this. This is just the way it is.
Eight processor machines used to be the realm of supercomputers. The OSs of those rarified beasts spent enormous time and computing resources simply keeping track of what its processors were doing - keeping them fed and cleaning up the messes when things get out of sequence. Oh, and the programs were written and compiled for that particular machine as well. OSX is not such an OS and FCP is not such a program. They are designed to run on a range of machines, from single processor PPC G4 Powerbooks all the way up to your mighty intel octobeast. Eventually we'll have 64bit OSs and applications - but backward compatibility and consumer based (aka cheap and as broad a market share as possible) economics limit this movement.
Enjoy your machine, it is very capable. You need to understand how those capabilities can be made manifest. Get an ATI X1900 card and learn how to use as many programs at the same time as possible. If you use Compressor, learn how to set up virtual clusters. You are correct, it is a machine that you should be able to use for a long (in "computer years') time.
    Good luck.

  • Can't reset PRAM on 2008 8-Core Mac Pro

My Mac Pro has been behaving weirdly for a while, and since it's been years, I figured I'd zap its PRAM. But it doesn't work.
I have an Apple wired keyboard, connected directly to the Mac Pro (no USB hub). But when I restart the Mac holding down cmd-opt-P-R, it's ignored -- it goes straight to the desktop as usual. No cycling of boot-up and no multiple chimes.
    Any ideas why?
(Yes, definitely command and not control. I'm a Mac vet.)

Hi JAso, no worries. glad to help. Yes try and crank up your MP 2008 on another file system with OSX on it. Keep that OSX pure.. no unneeded apps.. duct the basic OS and any S?W updates / maintenance - repair the disk permissions and reboot of the new OSX.. - make user/pwd  jaso .. etc.. be as quick and lean as you need. Keep as maintenance starter
What to look for from restart of new FS ( memory stuck  / FW disk etc):
spritely start up and login.. just like out of the box
fast login to new clean user/
restart it a few times to resolve any "struth that fast!" anomalies...
What to do next if the former is true...:
well it's likely your MP's h/w is healthy and as reliable as ever and..
main file system is a bit buggered and can USUALLY be corrected... (but not always)
the OSX OR the localised goodies in ~/ that you use and a bit crook (r.s.), stale, plotted, bloated and possibly corrupt.
Else.. hmm the MP might need some surgery. The main file system's storage hardware (Macintish HD et al) might be slightly crook.
Anyway all of the is and the really cool things you can do to fix the S/W structures to make you mc kick along is easy to do.
AND.. read this with vigour and enthusiasm..
contrary to many of the sheepish and parroted posts in these forums there is usually NO NEED TO REINSTALL the OS. to fix these slowdown things!
use available tools  to perform basic clean up and some surgery
one or two commercial ISV software.apps you MIGHT optionally purchase to perform filesystem tune ups beyond what OSX offers.
Anyway mate.. see if you can sort out a small OSX standalone system on an external spinning disk .. preferably SATA, eSATA, FW800 .. rear of that .
Oh and is you have a spare FW MAC,, fire up the MP2008 in TARGET MODE (hold 'T' key at startup), slip in a FW 800  cable between each and off you go.. You can checkout the MP's file systems from other Mac.
More Opinion: ALSo Recovery Partition if you have it. Often there's can be unavailable or as corrupt.
THere's tonnes of ways to check this out...WITHOUT whacking th existing OS... thats a subsequent resort.
Post your results for others to see.

  • Can PS CS 6 take advantage of a high RAM system

Hi. I am thinking of investing in a workstation desktop built from oem components (since the components are quite cheap now). I have confgured a system on paper that has:
    Core i7.
    Dual NVIDIA video cards
    32 GB of DDR3
    Win 7 64 bit
There is a lot of discussion on some computer building forums as to whether programs like CS 6 can take advantage of such large amounts of RAM. I myself have 8 GB of RAM on a Mac and notice that the kinds of images that I open cause CS6 to max out on whatever RAM it can take up (causing it to use swap space), causing operations like nudge and healing to take some time. Can CS6 take advantage of such vast amounts of memory and also the dual NVIDIA cards with Open CL?

    >> and also the dual NVIDIA cards with Open CL?
2 cards, no, due to driver issues.
SLI/multicard connections - no, those are intended for gaming acceleration only.
A single card with multiple GPUs, yes.
