Can my first generation airport express be used with airplay using iOS 7.1.2? It stopped working after one of the big iOS updates.

I have a first generation Airport Express.  Although it appears on the Airplay screen on my iPad and iPhone 5 (using iOS 7.1.2) the music does not play through the Airport Express.  The Airport Express does function correctly when I stream music via iTunes from my desktop computer, so I know that the device is working.  The Airport Express firmware version 7.6.4 is up to date.

Hello lorifromminn,

Hi guys, recently had the same issue. You require an older version of Airport Utility to configure the older Airport Express. It can be found here.

  • How do I control a first generation airport express with 10.8.2?

How do I control a first generation airport express with 10.8.2?
I have an old airport express that one of my machines running mountain lion will not support.  If I upgrade all of my systems to mountain lion, is there any way I can still control and configure the airport express?

You may need Airport Utility v. 5.6
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
It does work with Mountain Lion.

  • Second Generation Airport Express (MC414LL/A with two ethernet ports))

The link http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/AirPort_Express_Setup_Guide.pdf (page 7) still points to the first generation Airport Express (802.11n - Part FB321LL/A).
Can anyone provide a working link to the User Manual?
Is WDS supported on this dual mode device?

The new manual is now available.

In addition to RyanJC's comments, the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) can store up to five different http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108081 configuration profiles. You will need to use the AirPort Utility to create & save these profiles.
    To create a new profile:
Open AirPort Utility, select your AX from the list, and then, click "Manual Setup."
From the AirPort Utility menu, select "Base Station," and then "Manage Profiles."
Click "+" to create a new profile; give it a name, and then, click OK.
Set options, such as network name, passwords, Internet connection method, etc.
When done setting the options, click Update.
    To switch profiles:
Open the AirPort Utility, select your AX from the list, and then, click "Manual Setup."
From the AirPort Utility menu, select "Base Station," and then "Manage Profiles."
Click on the desired profile, and then, click OK to apply the new profile and restart the AX.
Just remember to switch to the desired configuration profile before removing power from the AX.

  • I can't access my 1st generation airport express devices using airport utility

I have a new Motorola Surfboard Extreme wireless cable modem & router set-up on my main internet cable line. To it i've connected 1st generation airport express using an ethernet and extended it with another 1st generation airport express so i can connect to itunes and a remote printer.  When I go to Aiport Utility to perform the set-up, i'm told i need to update to version 5.6.  When installing Aiport Utility 5.6 I receive an error prior to completion which prevents me from performing the set-up or even seeing the two airport express devices in the program.  Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

By "1st generation" AirPort Express are you referring to the 802.11g or 802.11n model? Version 5.6 of the AirPort Utility would be required to administer the older 802.11g Express.
If you do have an 802.11g model, are you actually running OS X 10.7.5 on your Mac?

  • I have a 5 year old Dell PC and purchased the Airport Express last year.  After one of the iphone 4s updates I lost the contact and cannot reestablish.  I have even tried to hard wire from my router to the airport express and I cannot connect.

I have a 5 year old Dell PC and purchased Airport Express last year.  I used my iphone 4s to connect and it has been working until recently I lost connection after one of the iphone updates.  I cannot make contact with the unit.  I have even used an ethernet cable that I hooked to my router and still won't work.  I cantinually get this message from Airport Utility.  An error has occurred and I can not do anything else.

If you have the AirPort Express setup in Bridge Mode, try changing the Connection Sharing setting to "Share a public IP address"
    AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address
    Update
You will probably get a message about a Double NAT error. Click to "ignore"
This setting might allow mutliple devices to connect and may not. It's worth a try...I have about a 60-70% success rate at hotels with this setting.
Unfortunately, as you note....hotels have become a lot smarter about connections to their network. At some point, they probably will not even allow another router to connect at all.

Hi Eric, it is Safari but I thunk I've solved it by dragging the autofill into the safari toolbar and clicking on it when I want to use the fearture. Nothing else worked. this OS is a crock as far as I am concerned.

  • Set up first generation airport express?

I have just bought new Airport Extreme and would like to use  first generation express to extend the network (even if it slows down the extended region a bit) but the utility does not let me configure it. Any ideas will br apreciated!

Let's make sure that you have a 1st Gen AirPort Express.
Please look on the side of the Express for the model number. The 1st Gen is A1264.
    Is this what you have?
Which version of the AirPort Utility are you using?

  • Does the first generation Airport Express work on newer Macs and IOS devices?

I would like to know if an older Airport Express(M9470LL/A) will work on:
    Macbook Air 2011
    iPhone 4
    iPod Touch 2nd Gen
    iPhone 3Gs

Check again very carefully and make sure that you are downloading the correct AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion
You likely downloaded AirPort Utility 5.6.1 for Mac, which is only for Snow Leopard and Leopard operating systems.....so it will not run on Lion.

  • Airport Express - No Sound with Airplay

    I'm at my witts end
    Set Up:
Very Simple - Airport Express connected to comcast modem.
No problem with wi-fi connection to internet.
    Problem Statement:
No sound out of speakers using Airplay.
    Facts:
    1) In iTunes I can select my speakers (connected to Airport Express).
    2) When I select my speakers, the music will stop playing from my device, but no sound comes out of the speakers themselves.
    3) No sound when plugging in ear buds to the airport express.
    4) Speakers work when plugged into the device.
    5) All software/firmware is up to date.
    Misc Questions:
    1) I have tried nearly every configuration I can think of in the airport utility...and I simply get nothing. Are there certain settings necessary?
    2) Is IvP6 a signficant factor?
    3) Is it possible my audio jack on the airport express is malfunctioning?
    4) Is there anyway to test it?
I've exhausted the threads on this issue, so any fresh feedback would be appreciated.
    Thanks for your time.
    C

    1) I have tried nearly every configuration I can think of in the airport utility...and I simply get nothing. Are there certain settings necessary?
None that I can think of. It appears that you have everything configured properly.
    2) Is IvP6 a signficant factor?
I only found IPv6 to be an issue when used in conjuction with Bonjour on Windows-based PCs. On Macs I found that it doesn't matter if this networking protocol is enabled or not ... as far as AirPlay is concerned.
    3) Is it possible my audio jack on the airport express is malfunctioning?
Yes, or the audio circuitry, specifically the DAC built-in the Express. When substituting a pair of stereo headphones (or earbuds) you are only testing the analog audio output of this port.
    4) Is there anyway to test it?
You've already tested the analog part of the audio port. To test the digital side, you would need to connect a optical digital connector/cable to the port. One simple test is to verify that the other end of the optical cable has a bright light appearing from it. Better still, connect it to an audio receiver that has the appropriate optical digital audio input port to verify that sound is present.

  • 1st Generation airport express capabilities

I will be using a 1st generation airport express as a router at an exhibition. I have ordered 2 mbps connection. Will the airport express be able to deal with connecting 8 ipads to the internet?

There is a good deal of confusion about what is and is not a 1st Generation AirPort Express.
Check and locate the Model No on the side of your AirPort Express.
If you see A1264 there, this model is a 1st Generation product that will support up to 10 wireless connections.
If you see A1084 or A1088 there, these are older "pre-generation" models that only offer up to "g" wireless speeds, not faster "n" speeds.
If you have a 2 Mbps connection, then each of the 8 iPads will be receiving only .25 Mbps. That is going to be "iffy" if you are planning to have all 8 iPads connected simultaneously.  If the iPads will be used for very light browsing, you may be OK.
If you plan to download graphics intensive media, or video, I doubt that the 2 Mbps connection will support this acceptably.
Unfortunately, this is going to be one of those times when you will not know if things will work until you actually try them. If it were me, I would go for a faster connection speed....4 Mpbs would be better....8 Mbps better yet.

  • Since upgrading to Yosemite I can not run my airport express' without having to reset each of them every time I wish to use them. Does anyone know what the problem is?

I am running a 7 year old MacBook Pro 15. Since upgrading to Yosemite I can not run my airport express' without having to reset each of them every time I wish to use them. I did not have this problem with Mavericks OSX. Does anyone know what the problem is and is there a fix?

  • Can my Airport Express be used to extend the signal for an iPad2

I am using a Linksys wired router as the beginning of my home network. There is an ethernet cable running from it through a wall to the Xbox 360 and an Airport Express serving as the base for the wireless network. I have an iBook on the other side of the wall and about 10 feet and an iMac about 20 feet with one wall in between. These two have some fluctuation in their signal but only between 4 bars and 3. I just got an iPad 2 and it is causing me grief because it struggles to maintain a connection just another 10 feet from the iBook. If I put it next to the iMac when it has full 4 bars the iPad gets maybe 2. The iPad has full bars if next to the router. That kind of defeats the purpose of buying an iPad. So, my question is how to rearrange the network so the iPad is happy in the living room where I mostly use it. I had considered moving the iMac and using it as a base station to free the Airport Express for other duty but where I want to move it is further away from the living room. Right now the Airport is wired to the router. Is this necessary for it to be a part of the network? I know I can use it to get music from iTunes to speakers but would that placement also work as a wireless extender? Would just buying another router for the Xbox location and putting the Airport there also be a better solution?

ladybastet, let's clean up some terminology. You should designate only one router for your network. At present that is the Linksys. Your wireless access point is the Express, and it gets its network connection from the Linksys. Is that correct?
If I put it next to the iMac when it has full 4 bars the iPad gets maybe 2. The iPad has full bars if next to the router.
Now that you know your Linksys is the router, is the above correct? Unless the Linksys is also a wireless access point, the iPad's proximity to it will not matter. Only its proximity to the device creating the wireless network is a factor. In your case, I believe that is the Express.
There is an ethernet cable running from it through a wall to the Xbox 360 and an Airport Express serving as the base for the wireless network.
I'm not sure I understand. Is one Ethernet cable going to two places? What is it connected to, precisely?
Right now the Airport is wired to the router. Is this necessary for it to be a part of the network?
In the case of a wired router, yes.
I'm wondering if you have things configured properly, particularly if you have configured the iMac to share its network connection over AirPort. I'm even wondering if your iPad has unintentionally joined a neighbor's wireless network.
I had considered moving the iMac and using it as a base station to free the Airport Express for other duty but where I want to move it is further away from the living room.
Using the iMac to share a wired Ethernet connection to create its own wireless network is certainly possible, but it is less than ideal. For one, the iMac would have to be powered on all the time.
You do not need or want another router.
It is impossible for me to be certain of your network environment (meaning, the size and configuration of your home, the proximity of competing wireless networks, the number of network devices, and the potential for interference) but you might be better off replacing the wired Linksys router with an AirPort Extreme. That would give you the ability to create a "roaming network" or to use your Express to extend the Extreme's wireless network. I think this would be the easiest solution, but given the uncertainly of your description this expense may not be necessary.
Much of my confusion stems from your original question: "Can my Airport Express be used to extend the signal for an iPad2" - the quick answer is yes, but a prerequisite question is, "what signal?" The only "signal" I can determine that may be relevant is the one created by the Express. Once we have the terminology fixed, perhaps we can fix what's wrong with your network.
