Can't log into my XP machine from MacBook Pro using GoToMyPC - Help Please?

I just got a new MacBook Pro 17" and am having trouble logging into the the computer at my office (Dell Machine XP Pro). I've used the service for quite some time now so it's not that I am new to the web based service.
Here's what happens:
I sign into my account at the GoToMyPC.com website with my username & password without problem. The website shows that my Dell machine is "on line" as normal. When I click onthe Connect button, the the Safari window resizes (universal viewer?) and looks like it starts to load. However, within a few seconds, I get the spinning beachball of death. I've tried to let it sit there for as long as 10 minutes with no change. I have to force quick Safari because it's "not responding"
Here's what I think I know and the steps I've taken thus far...
I know that the service is working because I am able to log in from my wife's laptop ( HP - Windows XP home) from the same home wireless network that MacBook is connected to. That also rules out (I think??!!) any issues with the wireless network in my home.
I don't believe that there is any inherrent problem using a Mac to log in using the GoToMyPC service since I tried it on several different computers in the Apple Store without any issues whatsoever.
I talked with GoToMyPC tech support and they they it seems like a Java problem. However, it seems that I have the latest Java plug-ins in my Applications/Utilities/Java folder (1.3.1 & 1.4.2). Other than that suggestion they weren't much help.
I called AppleCare and they had me set up a test user account with no other changes to settings, etc... No help. They then had me re-install the OS from the original discs. No Help and know I have a folder called "previous systems" on my HD taking up 10 Gig. Can I just delete this folder or have I now opened up another can or worms?
I've poked around the security settings in the system prefs panel - but nothing juped out at me as a pssible soltion so I didn't change anything.
I'm at my wits end - I need this to work and can't figure out why it isn't.
Anybody got any ideas???
MacBook Pro 17" - 2 Gig Ram - 120 Gig HD   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   OS 10.4.7 on the "previous system"

Glad to hear that you found it.
Unfortunately, when we try to help folks...we usually stumble around for ideas, especially when we don't have the "whole picture". Your router/modem security setup was the wild card.
In your case, it was particularly odd that wife's PC could get out to Citrix through the router's firewall, but Mac couldn't.
But I'd be willing to bet that there's a FAQ section at GoToMyPC, that will explain this for you. But when you're up to your ears in alligators...well you know the rest
(Do you have a firewall running on both the Motorola and on the wireless router? Or don't you have a router, as such, and the network is provided using just the Motorola? Something to think about. Two firewalls are not necessarily better than one).
no reply needed...just glad you're "in".

  • Why can I log into some websites on my MacBook Pro and not on my MacPro?

Only just started happening...I have used 3 different browsers on my MacPro and still can't log into some webpages where a password is required.
Flickr, eBay, some on line shopping sites....
i have deleted cookies, cache, history, everything. Reinstalled the application (Firefox and Safari) but nothing.
Go to my new MacBook Pro and it connects..
I plan to do a full combo download and install of 10.6.8 however can't work out what's broken? I use Virus Barrier and MacScan but have (I believe) turned them off.

    Thanks for the advice everyone.
Working through them without much luck...
    New user didn't help.
    Have turned off MacScan.
    No improvement as yet.
P.S. Not sure how MacScan and Virus Barrier X would interact as they seem to do different things... I got both of these as apps in bundles so didnt really specifically buy them.
I can't see any proxy setting in network preferences so will need to go into virus barrier and check.
Reading the "recommended text" on Virus's for homework.
Tomorrow it will be Appzapper for them both if the patient shows no sign of improvement.

  • Can't log into Mac App Store from Mac Pro Desktop.

Earlier this evening I logged into the Mac App Store fine from my MacBook Pro and downloaded an app. Now I want to do same from mt Mac Pro desktop. Despite repeated attempts I can't log in. It just sits and cranks.
    Any recommendations appreciated.

    Hello Canyonlight,
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you were not able to log in to the Mac App Store to download applications on March 11th.
The iTunes Store services were experiencing issues at that time, which may have affected your attempts. You can see the system status for Apple services at this link:
Apple - Support - System Status
Please try logging in again, if you haven't already. Feel free to reply and let us know if the issue continues.
    All the best,
    Jeremy

  • Just migrated using time machine from MacBook Pro to older Macbook. iPhoto 9.4.3 won't open. Tried reinstall - no change.

Just migrated using time machine from MacBook Pro to older Macbook. iPhoto 9.4.3 won't open. Tried reinstall - no change. (Mac OS X 10.7.5)

Did you migrate the app from Time Machine? Reinstall it.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
The reference to NovaMedia is that there is the remanant of an older app in there somewhere that won't run on 10.7
    Regards
    TD

Your phone is carrier locked to a carrier other than the one you are trying to use.
It was apparently hacked to unlock it prior to your attempt to update. Updating has re-locked it to the original carrier.

  • I can't log into my App Store from my iMac.

I updated to the latest system last night, once finished I checked again and the store came up with updates for iMovie and iPhoto, when I try to log in to update these from the App Store Icon, the email address is grayed out, I can add my password, just not my .icloud email... can someone please help?

The first thing to do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You — not the previous owner — must do that. How you do it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
    1. You don't own another Mac.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. For early MBA models, you may need a USB optical drive or Remote Disc. You should have received the media from the previous owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
    2. You do own another Mac.
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to create a bootable USB device and boot the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can boot from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
Once booted in Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. You will need the Apple ID and password that you used to upgrade. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
Then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Apple customer service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.

  • I updated my iTunes to 10.6 and now I can't log into my Apple ID on my iPod Touch.  Help?

I did the new update of the itunes for my itunes and ipod touch (4th generation) and now when I try to log into my apps my apple ID window pops open and keeps popping back open when I try to log in. Has anyone had this problem? Had any success in fixing it?  I really need to get this fixed, I can't access any of my apps the require internet.  Thank you!

I tried downloading the newer Itunes, it didn't change anything in my Ipod Touch that apple ID still won't work. When I first updated to the 10.6 I was using a very old version of Itunes and it changed a lot in my ipod which I think had something to do with it now messing up.

  • I can't log into ichat with my .me or .mac account..help?

I am on the ichat screen and it is telling me the user id or password is incorrect and I see from previous discussions that the password needs to be short.  But mine is 6 characters no numbers.  Is this the problem?  Under .me is just won't connect me.  Under .mac it is stating the AOL username...issue.  Not sure how to get on.  I log on on my laptop with no issue?  Any help would be great. Thanks

    Hi,
You can use an AIM (Or AOL) as AIM stands for AOL Instant Messenger.
Apple have an agreement with AIM that @Mac.com and Mobileme/iCloud (*@me.com) Names are also valid AIM Screen Names.
However the Passwords must be kept to 16 characters or less due to the limits on the AIM servers.
Other Apple IDs are not Valid Screen Names unless you specifically Register them with AIM - OR they belong to another Service which iChat can access and are valid as Chat names with that Service.

  • I can't burn or play DVD's from macbook pro

I'm trying to play a commercial DVD and the "DVD player" app crashes, and VLC won't play either. Also I cannot burn any DVDs via Toast either. I am running OS X 10.8.2 on a macbook pro. I am assuming my DVD drive has an issue, so is there a way I can reset its settings, or test it, etc. ?

Ok same thing goes then. It seems with this latest update something has been broken with the DVD player App on Some Mac computers.
Only option is to Wipe and Reinstall clean.
You can take it to an Apple Genius Bar and show them what the problem is they may have a fix. But first make sure you back up all your personal files as there fix may be to wipe the drive and reinstall OS X.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Brother MFC-7420 Prints from iMac, not from Macbook Pro using Airport Extreme

I have a Brother MFC-7420 printer.  Up ntil a few days ago, I coiuld print from my Macbook Pro, as the Systems Pref. in the iMac allowed for everyone to print. Now I get the message "Printer Off Line," when the printer icon pops out of the dock in my attempt to print from the MacBook Pro. I use wired with the iMac, wireless with MBP, but it printed fine with the Extreme. Any answers, appreciated.

Have you already completed the troubleshooting basics, like powering off the entire network, and then powering up modem first, then each network device one at a time?

  • Won't let me log into Messages or FaceTime on MacBook Pro

Recently sent my Mac off to get fixed and it came back to me with Yosemite installed. Since then I have tried to log back into Messages and FaceTime on my Mac but am faced with "The user name or password was incorrect. Try again." on Messages and "An error occurred during activation. Try again." on FaceTime. I know my Apple ID is correct! Plus I've had to sign in with the Apple ID at logon as well and that's posed no problems. Both iMessage and FaceTime work fine on my iPhone 5S.
I've tried to allow permissions through Firewall along with more suggestions I've found online, but nothing seems to work.
It was fine on the older OS... help!

This could be a complicated problem to solve, as there are many possible causes for it. Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
Before proceeding, test on another network, if possible. That could be a public Wi-Fi hotspot, if your computer is portable, or a cellular network if you have a mobile device that can share its Internet connection. If you find that iMessage works on the other network, the problem is in your network or at your ISP, not in your computer.
    Step 1
Check the status of the service. If the service is down, wait for it to come back up. There may be a localized outage, even if the status indicator is green.
    Step 2
Sign out of iMessage and FaceTime on all your Apple devices. Log out and log back in. Try again to sign in.
    Step 3
Restart your router and your broadband device, if they're separate. You may have to skip this step if you don't control those devices.
    Step 4
    From the menu bar, select
               ▹ About This Mac
Below the "OS X" legend in the window that opens, the OS version appears. Click the version line twice to display the serial number. If the number is missing or invalid according to this web form, take the machine to an Apple Store or other authorized service center to have the problem corrected.
    Step 5
Take the steps suggested in this support article. If you don't understand some of the steps or can't carry them out, ask for guidance.
    Step 6
    From the menu bar, select
               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network
If the preference pane is locked, click the lock icon in the lower left corner and enter your password to unlock it. Then click the Advanced button and select the Proxies tab. If the box marked SOCKS Proxy is checked, uncheck it. You don’t need to change any other settings in the window. Click OK and then Apply. Test.
The result may be that you can't connect to the Internet at all. Revert the change if that happens, or if iMessage still doesn't work. Remember that you must Apply any changes you make in the preference pane before they take effect.
    Step 7
    Select from the menu bar
               ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Storage
    and click
Block all sites from storing information on this computer
    Close the preference pane.
    Step 8
Make sure you know the ID and password you use with iMessage. Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Use the search box in the toolbar of the Keychain Access window to find and delete all items with "iMessage" or "com.apple.idms" in the name. Log out and log back in.
    Step 9
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
If iMessage worked in the guest account, stop here and post your results.
    Step 10
Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you start up, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound outputand Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. After testing, restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and test again.
If iMessage worked in safe mode, but still doesn't work when you restart in "normal" mode, stop here and post your results.
    Step 11
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.apsd.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    Step 12
    Reset the NVRAM.
    Step 13
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
    Step 14
    Reinstall OS X.
    Step 15
If none of the above steps resolves the issue, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or contact Apple Support. When you set up a support call, select "Apple ID" as the product you need help with, not the hardware model. That way, if you're not under AppleCare, you may be able to talk your way out of being charged for the call.
