Can't read dvd

I have some dvds I have recorded from old movies in the past. I know the content is good, they play on a dvd player, however, they read as a blank dvd on my imac. I want to edit them...any suggestions. Some of them read...even same brand of dvd...help:-)

Welcome to discussions!
Perhaps it isn't the media you are using, but, instead the manner in which you are burning.
(Thanks to Len Goff for the copy & paste):
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save as Disc Image...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. If you hold your mouse cursor over the pop-up it says: "Select a slower speed to work around burn failures," so select 4x or slower for best results. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

Burning with the disk utility allows you to burn slower. That means a better play-back DVD.

  • Dvd drive can't read DVD's

    hi all,
My problem is the dvd drive in my laptop. It will not read dvd's commercial or burnt variety, curiously it reads cd's just fine. So far email tech support has been useless. I wrote them explaining what steps I had tried to fix the problem such as uninstalling and reinstalling device drivers and they suggested that I try and reinstall device drivers. Do they even bother to read the emails you send or just guote out of some manual. System restore did not work either, but the drive is rarely used so the latest system restore points are probably useless wrt this problem. Returning the unit to factory state is simply not an option. The unit is still under warranty. Any other suggestions? I couldn't find any firmware updates. Other than this problem this system works flawlessly and has since I bought it.

The DVD's I assume are data as well as movie files? Do you have an app such as Intervideo, etc to play dvd's?
My usual steps include running a laser cleaning disk, remove/reinstall as you have done and maybe deleting upper & lower filters.Once done if it still doesn't work,it is declared dead.
I would request a replacement.Of course HP will likely first make you jump through the usual hoops which include a System Recovery back to factory configuration. This can be eased considerably by making a backup Image of your current setup to restore later.
A great free tool I have used a lot lately is Macrium. It works fast and will create & save the image to external USB HDD, CD/DVD,network drive, etc.

  • Can't read dvds burned on the same mac

    Hi,
I burn dvds on my macbookpro, but can't read them on the same machine.
    This happens since 10.5.1.
Tried both verbatim dvd-r and tdk dvd-r.
    A dmesg returns frequently:
jnl: disk2s3: flushing fs disk buffer returned 0x5
    which error is it?
any hint or pointer to a solution?
    -c.

    Hi All
this might sound funny or strange... but it happened to me 3 times before finding the problem.. So just in case here it goes.
If the machine was working fine at one point.. burns DVD with no problem it just doesn't read them..
Let me ask you this question.
Have you fumigated your place lately? or around the time the machine stopped reading the DVD;s.
I use the the foggers that look like smoke.. so they live no residue, no problem with living pilots on.. never had a problem with them
Til I had to replace the DVD drive on my older Mac, an iMac20 .. took 3 replacements for me 2 finally realize what the problem was...
Like I said, just in case.
    Good luck

  • Satellite Pro M30: Can't read DVDs on DVDrw drive

    I cant read dvds...
i can burn them but when i start to read them it shows me an error like this " E:\ is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."
    its killin me, please help

    Hi
The I/O device error occurs if drive has a problem with the disc or your system config (mainly a disc problem).
The DVD drive cant read all DVDs or just the burned DVDs?
Which burning software did you use?
As far as I know you should always closed the burning session.
Furthermore if you need the DVD Shrink software please check this links:

  • IMac can't read DVDs

My iMac won't read DVDs. I put a DVD in, and it gets ejected after a few minutes. I already tried repairing disk permissions, resetting SMC, using a drive cleaner, trying different brands of blank DVDs, etc. but none of these work.

Contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

  • IMac can't read DVD's?

    Hi,
My friend took some old video tapes(from a video camera) and turned them into DVD's for me. I now want to edit them through iDVD. The problem is, is when I put them in my computer. it says it is a blank disc. I have watched these DVD's on a DVD player before and they worked fine. The disc is also not scratched at all. They can also be read on my Windows computer. Is it because they were maybe made on a PC? Is there anything I can do so I can see them on my computer? Has this happened to any of you?
    Thanks Alot!
    ~meyer0095

    Hello meyer0095
Go to: "Macintosh HD / Applications / Utilities" and open "Disk Utility" then insert the DVD. When you see it pop-up select/highlight the DVD's image, and then go up to and click "New Image." Then name it in "Save As" and select "Where" you want it to go. "Image Format" read/write "Encryption" none and "Create" a new image.
To be honest with you I can't say for sure why they show up as blank? If there is anything at all on a disk you may not be able to read/view it, but "Finder Info" and "Disk Utility" will tell you how much data is on it.

  • Upgraded to Lion, no longer can I read DVD-R

A friend gave me a DVD-R of some pictures we took on a vacation (created out of Windows.)  With SL I had no issues importing these photos into Aperature.  I have since upgraded to Lion and want want to re-copy the photos onto one of my hard drives.  When I put the DVD-R into the same drive I used in SL (HP 1170d) it shows up as a burnable Untitiled DVD.  Opening Disk Utility and selecting Info it says that the media is NOT blank, but it is Appendable.  No "Volume" shows up. This sounds like a very seriou bug.  Can anyone confirm?  Thanks.

You'll have to contact Brookstone, the developer of the app in question to find out if they will update the app.

  • MBP can't read DVDs

My Penryn MBP can't play most of the DVDs I create through DVD Studio Pro 4. It thinks the DVDs are blank or it ejects them. This doesn't happen to all DVDs, only to the homemade ones. It's usually fine with purchased movie DVDs. And it's not consistent either. I burned a DVD yesterday which worked fine then, but when I tried to play it now, it spits it back out. What is wrong?

UPDATE: I tried some of the "fixes" like holding CmdOptionI when inserting a DVD and even clearing the PRAM but none of them work. I even tried booting to Windows but the DVDs still can't be played! So in my unprofessional opinion, I doubt it's a OS X issue... Now, can it be hardware?
    The symptoms are:
-most homemade DVDs (ala DVD Studio Pro 4) cannot be played, even though they do work on other DVD players
-the computer would either state that they're blank or spit them back out.
-however movie DVDs purchased and even copied ones could be played.
Should I try cleaning the superdrive? Should I take it in to Apple? Can they check it out even if I don't have Apple Care? Can I still get Apple Care if they need to fix/replace it?
