Can't setup my MacMini server!

Hi !
I can't setup my MacMini server.
I can access it to SSH with "root" user but when I use the Server Admin tool, I can't authenticate "Password wrong"
Someone can help me ?

So you too have a Mac Mini refurb? (If you have a serial number, then your configuration is probably not a refurb, which means your question probably isn't the same.)
Are you working your install remote, or do you have a display and keyboard connected directly to the box?
If you're not working locally with a directly-attached keyboard and mouse and video, then I'd suggest starting there. Get the network stuff out of the path.
I'd also look at the particular keyboard in use, as I've chased a few similar problems over the years that involved using non-vendor keyboards. You might not be getting the same character listed on the keycap; Mac OS X does try to adapt to PC keyboards and such, but doesn't always succeed. And some PC keyboards are just weird.
If you are working locally and the box isn't working and the passwords are stuffed and you have an Apple keyboard or recognized PC keyboard, then the path forward for the Mac Mini Server (as differentiated from the Mac Mini not-server refurb that's discussed in the base thread, and versions of that Mac Mini not-server can boot Leopard) would be to wipe the disk using Disk Utility (via the menu bar visible on the second? page when you boot the installation DVD) and then perform a full install.

    Dear all,

However it is a chalenge because I never did a such work with mac and I would like to have some advice from us and particularely about that:
    * Bandwidth (What should take care with my Phone line provider)
    * Is there a web platform I should provide to my client, to let them to manage MySQL, FTP account, manage file as PLESK does
    * How should it set up my mac server to make it as a performent web server
    * Do you have some other recommandation, procedure
The Mac server I might received have
    12G RAm
    2,8 Hrz (quad)
RADI1 (260G) I am going to extend it
many thank for you recommandation and advice

This is a System Center Configuration Manager 2007 forum. You should post your question in a Windows forum although to my knowledge, there is nothing built-in to Windows to provide this capability and you will have to implement a third-party solution.

  • Can you setup a diskless server within a zone?

Is it possible to run a diskless server from with in a zone?
At present I believe you cannot nfs share a directory out of a zone so this alone would stop a diskless client working.
Also in /usr/sadm/bin, smc doesn't exist, so smoservice won't run. Why smoservice and smdiskless even in /usr/sadm/bin if you can't run it in a zone?
    I'm using solaris 10 release 1/06.

Is it possible to run a diskless server from with in
a zone?I don't know how to interpret that sentence.
At present I believe you cannot nfs share a directory
out of a zone so this alone would stop a diskless
client working.Ah, you mean use a zone to support a diskless workstation. Correct. NFS support is very much tied to the kernel and it is apparently very difficult to allow non-global zones to do NFS without breaking the security guarantees of zones.
Today, there is no way to do this. I'm sure it's an RFE, but I don't know if anyone is actively working on a solution.
Also in /usr/sadm/bin, smc doesn't exist, so
smoservice won't run. Why smoservice and smdiskless
even in /usr/sadm/bin if you can't run it in a zone? All packages are moved over, even if their operation might fail due to privilege violations.

  • Can you setup both VPN server and Back to My Mac on Lion Server?

I have been trying to figure out if this is possible for some time. Can you use both Back to My Mac and VPN server services at once on a OS X Server?
So far here is what I have found:
    - According to http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1629  Back to My Mac and VPN use the same UDP ports(500,4500)
    - I have been able to get my VPN service working by removing all access for Back to My Mac(in System Preferences->iCloud) as well as removing all "Mobile Me" access on our AirPort Extreme.
The moment I try to add an account to access the network via Mobile Me(ie Back to My Mac) on the Airport Extreme, I am no longer able to make a VPN connection.
Checking the Service VPN Logs, no log entry is shown for the failed connection.
    So, my questions are:
    1. Has anyone been able to get these two working on the same server/network?
    2. Is there any way to change the default ports used by the VPN server service on Lion Server?
Thank you to anyone that can provide any suggestions.

Just as FYI....I just started using iCloud and tried the "back to my mac" on a mac server that is my VPN server.
Enabling "back to my Mac" prevents the VPN from being useable.
Disable "back to my mac" and the VPN works again, as verified from both another MAC and an iPhone.

  • How can i do for setup a update server?

We have a mac network environment, We want to setup a update server for upgrade all of the mac computers automatically. The Server has already installed the MAC OS X Server 10.5.5. How can I do to setup?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Eric

Take a look at this page on the Apple site.
    http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/resources/
All the current manuals for Leopard Server are listed in the lower right hand column.
You will want to look at the one for "System Imaging and Software Update Administration".
You will find you have two choices once you configure the Software Update portion of Server. You can use Workgroup Manager to manage the clients to receive updates or you can point unmanaged clients to the local update server via command line.

  • How do I setup permission to transfer files to the MacMini Server. I thought I had it setup to do such but apparently not as I get an error message?

How do I setup permission to transfer files to the MacMini Server. I thought I had it setup to do such but apparently not as I get an error message that I don't have permission?

Both the Mac and Windows units we are usinghave connectivity to the MacMiniServer (on the same network) to open and edit files but cannot transfer new files to the MacMini. FileSharing is on. I went to File Sharing on the MacMini and added the appropriate users and checked FileSharing. Is there something else I needed to do?

  • Can't setup Gmail account - "Mail couldn't discover the account settings for the Mail server "

Since upgrading to Yosemite I can't add one of my gmail accounts.
It's my business domain which is hosted with GMAIL. It worked before the upgrade. Now adding the email address in 'internet accounts setup'  I get the message "Can't setup Gmail account - "Mail couldn't discover the account settings for the Mail server "
Mail will not let me setup an email account directly in mail either.
There seems to be major problems with mail in this update.
    Also SMTP keeps failing.
    Yosemite is a disaster.

Try this. I saw this solution elsewhere on the boards here.
When setting up a business gmail account, something other than @gmail.com, when you try to add the account in Mail preferences, don't select Google as the account type. Choose, "Other." Fill out the name, email and password as usual. Worked great for me after having similar issues trying to get my business gmail account to work in Yosemite.

Try setting it up with these servers: https://www.timewarnercable.com/en/residential-home/support/faqs/faqs-internet/e -mailacco/incoming-outgoing-server-addresses.html

  • Can I input MacMini server thunderbolt video into IMac minidvi port?

I have a new MacMini server with Thunderbolt video output, and a mid 2010 27" IMac with minidvi external video input.
I have used the IMac as a monitor for my Mac Pro with good results for over a year.
My understanding from the Apple web site is that Thunderbolt video will drive a current model 27" LED Cinema display with minidvi input, so long as the monitor is the last item in the thunderbolt chain.
I have been unable to get the thunderbolt video from my Mac Mini to drive the minidvi external video input on my IMac.
Am I doing something wrong?  The monitor is the last (and only) item from the thunderbolt output on the MacMini server.
I continue to struggle with the disparate apple video standards, but need the ability to occasionally use the IMac in its external monitor mode, as opposed to remoting in to the MacMini server across the network.
    Any help appreciated.

    My Bad...
MiniDisplayPort is required, and this is what I have.
I believe that I finally solved the problem after getting through to a tier 2 Apple tech.
It does work, but there are several caveats:
    1.  Both machines are required to be on before connecting them.
    2.  This mode will support Windows 7 in boot camp, but you are required to connect the two devices in OSX, be certain the video is displayed on the monitor which is in Target Display mode, and then reboot the source machine to boot camp.
    3.  The MiniDisplayPort is the required cable, even though the source machine might use thunderbolt.
    Thanks....

  • Multiple domains and multiple IPs in the same MacMini Server

I am sure that this topic has been faced already but I cannot find enough information to really dig into a solution.
I have a macmini server with two IPs let say x.x.x.12 and x.x.x.13 .
The server is set up on the first IP. It has his primary zone, machine record, mail aslias and www alias.
Lets call the server domain server.domain1.com
Everything works fine I have a couple of local users and a couple of LDAP users. Just to test the machine setup.
I can send and receive emails using any of the users as [email protected]
Now I would like to have another domain, domain2.com in the same server .
The final goal is to have users under different domains. They have their own email box, calendar, etc.
It will be preferable that I can share the same username with different domains. But I can live without that option.
My first test was to have the second domain called server.domain2.com using the second IP. x.x.x.13 .
For that I created another Primary Zone with domain2.com as machine record of x.x.x.13 . To use the second IP I simply create another Ethernet interface on the macmini.
In the Mail -> Advance settings I added the host aliases as well as virtual hosting domains for domains2.com.
With this setting I can send emails as [email protected] or [email protected] but when I replay to their messages I get a "Relay access denied" error from server.domain1.com .
I also tryed another domain pointing to x.x.x.12, the same as server.domain1.com . I did not create any extra Primary Zone but the local host aliases and the virtual hosting domains.
Same issue. I can send but I get a "Relay access " error.
As you might notice I am a novice on servers settings. I just try to recreate a similar environment common to Virtual Hosting providers for my own website playground but I cannot cut through this email configuration obstacle.
Any significant meaning that can be leading me to learn how to do it will be very very appreciated . (beside lynda, com tutorials that I followed already but do not mention multiple domains for mails).
    Thanks

the problem I try to solve is to manage multiple domains in one MacMini Server.
    Having two IPs is secondary.
I would like that each domains has his own users with emails, iCals, Wiki and web sites.
The main problem is having emails to work for any additional domain beside the default one on the machine IP.
I also got an additional IP address to be used on the same server hoping that it make things easier but apparently is making things more difficult.

  • New MacMini Server

I've just taken delivery of a new MacMini Server - which has proved to be a trifle difficult in understanding.  Firstl I have two drives - one is labeled Macintosh HD2 and the other Macintosh Server - although I cannot see it at the moment.
Starting up from new wasn't as straightforward as I thought and with a usb Mac Time-Capsule ready to load, it didn't exactly do what it should have.
I eventually got it to load from the Time Capsule onto Macintosh HD2 so all file former files from the MacBookPro have loded accordingly into the HD2 drive.   So now I have the dock showing some of my applications except for the Macintosh HD logo that I am familiar with and resident on my desktop.   The question is how can I get this HD icon to appear on the desktop?
I actually don't require the server aspect at the moment, but I might in due course.
Another puzzle is that in my User Folder, the next level shows many of my secondary folders but several of them, such as Dropbox, Music, My Images, pictures, Public etc  have a red (no entry) circle and clicking on them says I don't have permissions to enter the folder.
I would welcome some input please as I fear that the setup hasn't gone exactly as I would have hoped.
    Thank you

Thank you Dave. One assumes therefore that if I've installed all my programmes on the wrong drive, I should theoretically be able to move them over to the Server HD.
I really don't know about this and Apple don't give any specific instructions as to the contrary.

  • Macmini Server for Mentoring program

I am in the development stages of setting up a mentoring program. I have been looking at the macmini server as an option but have a some questions in regards of ease of use versus a linux setup.
I will be using apple computers along with ipad for my coordinators.
I see that I can host a web site, but will it be able to host a vbulletin forum as well?
I am pretty proficient when it comes to software, but have not really messed around with linux much. tried ubuntu and liked it but it seems odd coming from mac osx and windows. How user friendly is SL server edition campared to Ubuntu server in regards to setup, maintaining and management. I do not have the budget to have an IT person on staff.
The server will primary be used to host website, forum, and file sharing. I like the integration of ical and the mail server. Any advise and suggestions appreciated.

I've never setup a Ubuntu server but a Mac mini server is very simple, use your 90 days of free phone support as much as you can. Or see what that new Joint Venture thing is that they launched the other day.
The Web Server is good and the Mail and iCal integration I can't remember if a Forum comes as one of the easy setup site options so thats a bit more work under the hood.
The Applecare gives you phone support for a very good price cant see you getting an option like that on Linux, both have good online forums for assistance as well.
The applecare doesn't cover command line though just GUI which probably means a vbulletin install would not be covered it you ran into trouble (so online forums for that one).
For the price and its abilities IMO you'd be mad not to go with the Mini, especially with other macs and ipads.

  • Use MacMini server for windows apps and save for windows files ?

My question : Office equiped mixed computers , aslo Windows and Mac,
Could we use MacMini server for both machines, working by windows apps and / or to save and work with windows files on MacMini server  and with Mac as well?
We woud use it for normal office work and get it by internet from other places as well
windows apps: merchandising, invoice, word, excel, pictures editing, Outlook Express + the Mac apps
    thnx ,
    MACIren

In general what you can do is: in OS X, use Windows in virtualization (aka emulation), as a "virtual machine" with VMWare Fusion, Parallels, or Oracle VM Virtual box.
That way you have both operating system open side by side without having to reboot into one or the other operating system.
Not sure whether you need a Mac Mini Server per se to do that, I do that with my MacBook Pro for instance. But the server would help since it has a quad-core CPU (more cores that you can dedicate to the virtual macine), and you can put the virtual machine on the second harddrive for better disk access performance. Was there some particular reason you were thinking of the Mini Server -- do you want to use server side Windows apps?
Again I have that setup on my MacBook Pro using VMWare Fusion with an XP virtual machine. In the Windows, I only use Office 2003 and some company apps that are Windows only. With Fusion (and I'm sure the other apps can do it as well) you can set a "shared" folder so both Windows and Lion will see the contents of it for reading and writing. I believe with Fusion you can also do your entire Home directory, but I prefer to limit it to a single shared "work" folder.

Can you elaborate on the question a bit? You're asking how we setup LVM on a Windows Server, but that depends a lot on what the server is for.
Maybe you can clarify your question and I can assist.
