Can't transcode my .264 footage

Hello all,
I am using footage from my iphone to edit.  I dropped my files into mpeg streamclip and continues to "quit  unexpectedly"  I reopen MPEG stream clip and same thing happens.  I am using the following settings
to batch
xdcam ex 1080p ex
100% quality
interlaced unchecked
1080p x 1920 unscaled
I tried with all 15 files and also with only 5 files .... i even tried 5 different files just to see if that was an issue....
error box with yellow triangle and exclamation point came up stating that it quit unexpectedly.
I also tried with  prores lte instead of xdcam ex  and got same error message....
I also tried to select files and tried to transcode with media manager ....same thing error message.
I also tried through compressor.... same thing error message.
message: Failed    3x crash service down ?
any idea guys/girls?
thanks
dave kc

Hey Shane,
That was just one thing i tried of many things.  I also used prores lte as well as media manager and compressor.

  • Using compressor with h.264 footage shot at 29.97

when i try to drag in a bunch of h.264 footage shot at 29.97 into a new batch to transcode to apple pro res, compressor runs really slow. It takes a long time for the clips to appear in the new batch document window. If I do the same with h.264 footage shot at 23.98 the clips appear almost instantaneously. Once it appears in window the 29.97 footage can be submitted and it does compress. Anybody else out there have this problem?

  • Can Canon 5D Mark II footage be edited in FCE at 1080p?

Can Canon 5D Mark II footage be edited and outputted in FCE at 1080p?
I am converting the raw 5D footage to Apple intermediate Codec using MPEG Stream Clip and then importing into FCE. Playback during editing is fine. Then I notice that in the easy set up options there doesn't seem to be an option to choose 1080p. Does that mean that FCE cannot edit/output 1080p files, or does it just mean that there is no easy setup for 1080p? What should my easy setup settings be for editing these files in FCE?
    Thanks for your help

I converted to apple intermediate codec using MPEG streamclip to make it easier to edit in imovie (plays back smoother) so assumed it was best to do the same with FCE. Not necessary?
    The converted file data is
    H.264, 1920x1080, AIC, 16 bit, big endian, FPS30, 64.62 mb/s
    The original file data is
    H.264, 1920x1080, 16 bit, little endian, FPS30, 39.77 mb/s

  • Can Compressor transcode clips in fcpx events?

I have imported all my clips and vids into fcpx without transcoding into proxy or proress 422. I would like to have all my clips stored as h.264 or avchd inorder to keep my storage requirements reasonable. currently I have a hodge podge of codecs including DV, AVCHD, H.264, mjpg .mov, mjpg .avi and a  casio codec mjpg i think. My questions are(1) can Compressor import these codecs/file formats. (2) can compressor transcode files that are already imported into events in fcpx.
    thanks

    Try trashing your Preferences.
This is commonly used as a remedial procedure in Applications like FCP X where preference files occasionally get corrupted and can cause unusual problems.
The simplest way to do it is by using Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion. (Free App).
With Preference Manager, you can back-up your existing preferences before trashing them, so that if the Preferences were not the cause of the problem, you can restore them with a mouse click.
This is the link for the latest version - there are links to older versions on the right of the page.

  • Streamclip and mixing AVCHD with .264 footage

I have an AVCHD camcorder for land shots and a .264 waterproof camcorder for on water and want to mix footage in FCE4. I cannot upload the .264 and would have to use streamclip.
1/Which version do i download the 19.2 or 19.3.b version?
2/ It also says on the site there are MPEG2 issues with snowleopard which worries me as I don't yet have the understanding to fix it if it causes an issue. Is this a real problem or resolved now?
3/ Would i be better (or can I) rough edit the .264 footage on imovie then burn to DVD and re import to FCE 4 from DVD to then mix with the AVCHD footage?
    4/ Can I import from un-encrypted DVD's?
    Thanks A Mac newbie

Tom, thanks for the quick response. Your books has arrived and is great but these questions are a little Off Piste in relation to FCE4 so thanks for your help
1/ I think I have Snow Leopard as this is a new (1 week old) I Mac from Apple UK. How do I tell?
2/ If i convert the .264 will i definitely be able to mix the footage from both my camcorders in FCE4?
3/ Is the workaround re installing the MPEG2 component or something else I have to do ?
As i am new to Mac if it is not an in built workaround I am concerned i will mess it up and lose MPEG2 playback ability (although not sure how that would actually effect me with the Audio Video media I use).

  • How can I clean up old footage in FCPX?

How can I clean up old footage in FCPX? I have some older 4x3 TV analog video that has some pretty noticeable noise and fuzz in the image. Anyone know how I can clean them up a bit? Thanks!

FCP X doesn't ship with a noise reduction filter. You can experiment with selective blur effects and sharpening, but I would not be very optimistic about the results.
There are a number of plug-ins available. One that I think works well is Neat Denoiser. They have a trial  version (with watermarked output) that you could download to see whether it will do what you want.
    Good luck.

  • Converting h.264 footage for my 1080i60 timeline...

    Hi all...
I've got some footage from a GoPro Hero cam (H.264, 1920x1080) that I would like to add to my current sequence (HDV-1080i60) which is set up for footage my Canon XHA1S (captured as HDV Apple ProRes 422). The end result for all of this footage is for broadcast in HD on TV...
I'm using FCP 7. I used MPEG Streamclip to convert the H.264 footage, but I was unsure about a few of the settings for doing so:
1: I chose the option "Export to QT" & for the Compression I chose 'Apple ProRes 422' assuming this would be the best option since my other footage uses the same. Someone please correct me here if that's not so...
2: The Frame Rate is blank & I'm wondering if I should leave it blank or adjust it to 29.97, again to match footage from my Canon.
    3. Frame Size. I'm really at a loss here. First I was thinking I should adjust it to 1440x1080 to match the Canon footage, but then I'm worried about the quality of the footage & wonder if it's even necessary to change it from 1920x1080? AND then, if I do leave it @ 1920x1080, I have 3 options: '16:9', 'unscaled', or 'HDTV 1080i'.
4: (and last, I hope) "Interlaced Scaling" is checked & "Deinterlace Video" is unchecked. I'm not sure if this is Progressive or Interlaced footage. Anyone know how to find out & what the correct settings for those are?
    THANK YOU : )

Funny that you sent me those links, I actually read them both a few hours ago & that was what led me to use Streamclip for that footage in the first place. Certainly makes me feel better to have these settings confirmed by the original author (just realized that)! Small world : )
And in regards to the Reinterlace Chroma, since this footage came out nicely, I'm guessing the others will too since they are all from the same source (probably similar to your cam for the motorcycles). But what exactly does that setting do?

  • Can I transcode from .mxf (EX3) to prores in Compressor or should that be done best in FCPX?

I am new to FCPX and compressor, can I transcode from .mxf (EX3) to prores in Compressor or should that be done best in FCPX?
I would like to do it the best way, perhaps that means fastest, or least prone to troublesomeness. Cheers

    Hmm…not sure.
Either way, you need to make them into Quick Time files and use the Sony transfer software for that.
FCPX is pretty fast and if your profile is accurate, it should be speedy on that version MBP.  Why not do a test and report back?

  • Can I Import H.264 Video Without it Looking Like Garbage?

I realize that FCE is made for DV, but I've got some nice footage (shot in BetaSP and digitized in a pro edit facility) that I want to import. The original looks really great, but whenever I import into FCE or transcode to DV using QT Pro, the footage degrades so badly that I can't believe it - it's truly not usable.
My clips are currently in .mov files in H.264 (720x405 res). I have to be doing something wrong. Any help would be appreciated!!

Try using MPEG Streamclip to convert it to Apple DV/DVCPRO NTSC or Apple Intermediate Codec. I did this recently and the results were very good.

  • Problems with "Author once" workflow, can't transcode HDV to BD and DVD

Adobe claims that with Encore CS3 you can
"author once, deliver to three formats" -- Blu-ray, DVD and Flash. I have been doing some research and testing, but have not been able to get it to work.
It seems as though Encore is not capable of taking HDV 1080i60 footage and transcoding it for both Blu-ray and DVD. The Blu-ray looks great, but the downconverted transcode for DVD is completely unusable.
Link to screen shot of HDV to DVD transcode. (Note: this is a frame at 100%, so the "comb teeth" really are that big.)
I have seen some pretty pathetic downconversions from HDV to DV resolution, but this is the most creatively useless one I've come across so far.
I have been able to use Dynamic Link to get an almost acceptable "author once" workflow from HDV footage. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a way to get Encore or After Effects to render fields for the DVD transcode, so fast-moving graphic elements and text have jerky/strobing motion.
FYI, I got Dynamic Link working well for non-fast clips by doing the following:
Make sure that "Separate Fields" was set to "Upper" in "Interpret Footage" for the HDV clip.
Set the clip's frame blending mode to "Frame Mix" ("Pixel Motion" works, just take longer).
Enable Frame Blending for the comp.
(Enable Motion Blur for the comp if any layers are using Motion Blur).
If only there were a button to enable field rendering for the comp along with Frame Blending and Motion Blur, as both of those options directly affect how the Dynamic Link renders/transcodes in Encore.
I noticed that without Frame Blending enabled for both the clip and the comp, the motion in the transcode was very jerky, even though the clip had not been time stretched/remapped.
Does anyone know of some way to get the mythical "author once" workflow to work? Perhaps it's only for progressive workflows and not interlaced? Could this be a Mac-related problem (I have not been able to test on Windows)?
I know I can downconvert first, then import into Encore, and that does work fine, but that completely negates the wonderful concept of "author once".
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

    Ruud,
Gspot showed there was a problem with the file. What it said was of the 130K frames, most were not needed. I went back to the editor and reconstructed the 130K file. Had problems trying to export to M2v. PPro 2.0 would freeze every time, sometimes in a few minutes, sometimes just short of completing, approx 2 hours(this was a 2 pass vbr setup). I experienced problems just trying to make an AVI file for importing into Encore 2.0. A lot of water has gone under the bridge since I first started this journey(over 300 hours). My first shot at elation occurred when I decided to try an m2v at vbr 1 pass instead of 2 pass. It worked. I say this because of late I have successfully made an Avi file, Imported the timeline and in fact satisfactorily made an m2v file (2 pass). The m2v was also brought into Encore 2.0. Though I have 4 HD's, it seems to me that as I am moving toward a successful product, I'm finding that I've located all my assets on one HD. Is this the way to go? I'd like to thank the alert for using Gspot. And I will, always. I believe that if I had used Gspot earlier I would not have been trying to fix the problem using a bad asset.
I've been able to make an iso file, though having trouble making a playable disc.

  • Encore insists on transcoding H.264 Blu-ray encoded file (Blu-ray legal)

I have a Blu-ray legal .m4v file encoded out of Adobe Media Encoder as H.264 Blu-ray VBR 2-Pass, maximum render, target 25Mbps, maximum 30Mbps.
My project is H.264, maximum 40Mbps.
Encore keeps listing the video file as untranscoded and wants to transcode it.
I've tried encoding just a portion of the video file instead of the whole thing using the same settings and when I bring this into Encore it recognizes it as Blu-ray legal and sets it to "Don't Transcode".
Can anyone think of a reason as to why this is happening?  I really don't want to sit through another eight hour encode that could degregade pq further.
    Thanks!

A .264 file from x264Pro or MeGUI that is BD-legal will import into En and be automatically set to Do Not Transcode.  So the file extension isn't the problem.  There are some esoteric H.264 parameters in x264 that must be set precisely in order to have En set the .264 file to DNT.  I suspect those same parameters will have to be set in MainConcept's encoder.
If you want to jump in the deep end, here are the x264 parameters that produce BD-legal output that also make En happy:
    program --pass 2 --bitrate 16000 --stats ".stats" --open-gop bluray --interlaced --pic-struct --level 4.1 --bframes 3 --ref 4 --slices 4 --aud --nal-hrd vbr --b-pyramid strict --keyint 30 --min-keyint 3 --vbv-bufsize 30000 --vbv-maxrate 40000 --weightp 0 --colorprim "bt709" --transfer "bt709" --colormatrix "bt709" --output "output" "input"
Obviously interlacing, bitrate, vbv-maxrate and such can be set as desired based on the source footage and delivery requirements.

  • Can I dumb down my footage for easy editing and use an edl (edit decision list) with the original..

Can I convert my footage to something Premiere Elements can handle easily and then use an edl with the original footage to get the quality I want?
    Thanks,
    Brian

I use DigitalMedia Converter 2.7 (an older version) from Deskshare, and it does great batch conversions. However, I have never used it for H.264, so cannot comment. It is shareware, but they have a trial. Going back many years, the trials were fully functional, but limited on the time - 30 days, IIRC.
With an i7, and a good amount of RAM, plus a good I/O (HDD's) setup, the H.264 material should edit smoothly. H.264 (all flavors) is CPU intensive, but the i7 should breeze through it.
Can you tell us about your I/O sub-system, i.e. your HDD's, their size, speed, controller type, free space and how you have them allocated?
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • How to use H.264 footage with uncompressed 8bit PAL footage

    Hi
I have a FCP project with the uncompressed 8 bit PAL settings and FPS is 25 as per PAL standards.
Now i have some 2 minutes of footage fron Canon 7D with H.264 settings. Frame size is 1920*1080 and FPS is 24. I was trying various options to use the footage but failed. already done with various exports like making a new projects of the H.264 settings and export the file as PAL setting with 720*576 and FPS 25, but the result is really bad. Video is shaking and pixels are damaged. Pan shots and other moving shots lost their quality totally.
I even installed an EOS codec, CE1110X, but dont know if i am using it the way it should be or not.
I even tried to export the footage from Premiere CS5 but the result was even bad.
    What to do? Please help.
    Thanx
    Pawan Sharma

    hi
just tried converting the footage with mpeg streamclip but the problem remains. Jitters are there and pixels are damaged. Details of the shots are in poor quality. I think the main reason behind this is the source footage is on 24 FPS and i am trying to convert it to 25 FPS. What you think? If this could be the possible reason?
I will get the full card structure in few hours and try the Log and Transfer procedure and get back to share the experience.
    Shane,
thanks a lot for the Log and Transfer tutorial, with the help of that tutorial now i can easliy transfer the clips, once i get the full card structure.
In the mean time if you guys can suggest something else please share.
I am working on a uncompressed 8 bit PAL project.
