CAN'T UNINSTALL JAVA PLUG IN 1.4.0_01

New to Java. I just installed the new J2SDK 1.4.1-rc. I (thought) I uninstalled the previous JDK/JRE (1.4.0), but apparently I didn't. Now, the files are gone, but I can't get rid of the Java Plugin icon and, more importantly, I can't associate executable jar files with the javaw.exe command.
I fear I deleted the files manually and I don't know what registry settings to change and how to make it associate javaw.exe with .jar files.
I am on a Windows XP machine.
Any help is appreciated!
Thank you,
Sam

Change:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\javaw.exe\shell\open\command
(Default) "C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.0_01\bin\javaw.exe" -jar "%1"
Edit to suit you JRE's home.

    Also click on other java icons and the same thing happens (a javaw.exe process starts but not window appears).

    Any ideas on what could cause this?

    That is a different problem. The batch file is looking for 'java' and can not find it.
    Here is a page that may be able to help as this may be a PATH problem:
    http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000549.htm
    If you are able to run a Java applet in your web browser, the installation was successful; you can try this applet:
    [http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml|http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml]
    You can contact the creator of the batch file, or you can open and edit the batch file to point to the java.exe that you just installed. Good luck!

  • Can't Install Java Plug-in for Firefox

    I'm running Firefox 0.9.2 on Windows 98, and I've tried to install the Java VM but when I download the installer it only gives me the ability to install it in IE, which already has Java working.
    It's quite annoying since it means that whenever I want to visit a site with a Java I have to switch to IE, and of course the reason I installed Firefox was so I wouldn't have to.

    This is covered by any number of Firefox sites - see this one's FAQs http://texturizer.net/firefox/

  • Firefox is blocking Java even though I had the updated version. Now I can't update or uninstall Java.

    On 4/2/12 Firefox informed me that Java had serious issues with security and I should let them block it, so I did. Later I found I couldn't play Pogo anymore so I tried to enable Java but it still wouldn't work. My Java is up to date, 6.0.290.11. Now I cannot update Java, error 1606, nor can I uninstall Java from my computer, same error cannot access location, in order to re-install. Since I was using the most updated version, my Java should not have been blocked. Anyone else have this problem? I am stuck and can't update or re-install or anything.

    I have the latest version and today it blocked it

  • Can't fix Java under Leopard - help!

    I was using Tiger with Java 1.6 SE set as the default. I then upgraded to Leopard and have found that 1.6 is not supported (ok, in my haste, I didn't research this properly).
    However, now, I'm stuck because I can't switch the default back to 1.5. When I launch Java Preferences, I get the following error:
    Dyld Error Message:
    Symbol not found: _CTFontGetGraphicsFont
    Referenced from: /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Libraries/libawt.jni lib
    Expected in: /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Application Services
    But this is a Unix system, isn't it... so there must be a file somewhere that I can edit to fix all of this?
    Also, how can I uninstall Java 1.6 SE?

    Hmmm.. I see what you're getting at but in fact the CurrentJDK folder is already linked to the 1.5 folder. When I run java -version it shows as version 1.6. So...
    $ ls -l `which java`
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 74 30 Oct 23:22 /usr/bin/java -> /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/Current/Commands/java
    And in the Versions directory there's this odd directory called simply "A", which Current points to:
    Mac:Versions Rick$ ls -l
    total 56
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 5 30 Oct 23:22 1.3 -> 1.3.1
    drwxr-xr-x 3 root wheel 102 29 Sep 07:53 1.3.1
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 5 30 Oct 23:23 1.4 -> 1.4.2
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 3 30 Oct 23:22 1.4.1 -> 1.4
    drwxr-xr-x@ 8 root wheel 272 8 Apr 2005 1.4.2
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 5 30 Oct 23:23 1.5 -> 1.5.0
    drwxr-xr-x 8 root wheel 272 21 Nov 2005 1.5.0
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 5 20 Sep 20:43 1.6 -> 1.6.0
    drwxr-xr-x 8 root wheel 272 21 Aug 08:16 1.6.0
    drwxr-xr-x@ 7 root wheel 238 30 Oct 23:23 A
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 1 30 Oct 23:23 Current -> A
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 3 30 Oct 23:22 CurrentJDK -> 1.5
    The "A" directory only contains JRE 1.6 as far as I can tell.

  • How to UNinstall Java Web Start?

    How can I uninstall Java Web Start from my computer? I have Java 2 Runtime Environment, and the option to uninstall it appears in my Add/Remove programs menu, but I'd like to leave Runtime on and just remove Web Start. How can I do this?

    As of JRE 1.4.2, Java WebStart is part of the JRE and can't be uninstalled separately.
    Why do you wish to uninstall it?

  • Issue with Internet Explorer and Java Plug-in

    Hi, I have a problem here and I hope someone knows whats going on. I have installed the Java Plug-in 1.4.0_01 and I have no problems using the plugin from Netscape.
    Now when i try to load the applets using IE, it will not use the Sun plug-in that is installed. I have selected both IE and Netscape in the Java Plug-in Control Panel and IE still does not want to use the plug-in.
    Is their a way to force IE to use the plugin?
