Can't write to locked folders

Can you lock a folder and still write to it in OS X Server 10.4.6?
Under previous versions of OS X Server, I could lock a folder (to prevent it being trashed inadvertantly) and still write files to that folder. Under OSX Server 10.4.6, locking a folder prevents any network user, even the administrator account, from writing to that folder. (Somehow locking the folder makes it read-only to all users.)
Is there a way to lock (protect) a folder and still be able to write to it?
Thank you!

You can use ACLs to limit the ability to delete something. You should check out Gerrit Dewitt's article:

  • Bizarre permissions issue: Can't write to owned folders

Has anyone experienced this and possibly has a fix ?
I used Carbon Copy Cloner to duplicate a drive, and everything seems to be OK with the new drive (all the files are there and read properly), except I cannot write to any of the drive's subdirectories, even though I'm the owner.
I can create a new directory at the root level, and it looks like this:
    drwx------ 2 jnash jnash 68 2010-08-08 23:44 Test
That directory behaves normally (i.e. I can create new files in it, etc.)
But existing directories with identical permissions and ownership:
    drwx------ 69 jnash jnash 2346 2010-07-20 15:43 Lyrics
give me permissions errors when I try to write to them:
    % touch Lyrics/test
touch: cannot touch `Lyrics/test': Permission denied
I've tried using chown to reset the ownership, and I've tried using chmod to change the permissions, but nothing has worked. If I execute as the superuser, I can write to these directories, but when I'm executing as myself (the owner: jnash), I'm denied.
    I'm stumped... Any suggestions ?
    Thanks!

I suggest leaving images out or your equation.
Yeah, in hindsight, I hear ya... not sure why the image approach failed, though--seems simple and foolproof enough...
The reason I didn't do a straight disk-to-disk copy is because my original drive was failing--once I knew I was dealing with a dying drive, I copied it to an image immediately. I could have dragged-and-dropped all the files instead, but I thought the image approach was cleaner...
Anyway, I was very happy that when I diff'd the original drive with the image, it checked out: I was concerned about data corruption from the drive failure, but looked like I caught it in time. Strange about the permissions, though... seems like a bug either with CCC or SL, but maybe it was somehow triggered by the drive's read errors ? (And to explain the read errors, I wasn't getting any actual errors in the Finder or command line, but the drive was sometimes reading and writing very slowly/hanging for 10-20 seconds in the middle of an operation, and I was getting SMART errors: every time the drive hung for a while, then finally finished what it was doing, the "uncorrectable sectors" count on my drive would increase... not a good sign. But, CCC created the disk image without any errors, so not sure what happened...)
At any rate, I didn't lose any data, and once I finish this image-to-tar-to-disk tapdance, it appears all will be back to normal.

  • How can I write to 4 different tables in database at the same time

I have .mdb file which has 4 tables for each hardware, I have a labview main program which calls 4 sub programs for each hardware, all these 4 subprograms run parallely.
One might finish one test early or late by milli seconds or seconds, the data has to be written to database file which has 4 tables inside.
I am planning to open reference in main program and use the reference in sub programs, I will write to Table 1 for first sub program , table 2 for second sub program and so on,
My question is can we write into one database file having 4 tables parallely/simulataneously? If no why?

Try it.  It should work.  As long as you are opening the database once, and passing the reference around, I don't see how it would not work.
You may run into troubles if two subvi's are trying to write simultaneously.  If so, use semiphores to lock out the action until done.
Or you could use a producer consumer architecture where the producer would queue up the table name and data, and the consumer would write to the database.  The producer can be replicated in each subvi.  In other words, each subvi will contain its own enqueue code.  All subvi's and the consumer loop would have to run in parallel.

  • Does anyone make an app / folder in which I can keep other apps locked behind a password?

Are there any iPhone APPs / folders that I can keep other APPs locked up behind a password?

This seems to be one of many shortcomings that Apple fails to address.  I don't know, maybe it is impossible to do this in the iOS?
This was the main reason I dumped the iPhone, I still have an iTouch because iTunes is unmatched...but I bought an Android phone and avoided the iPad for a Motorola Android Xoom tablet.
Android has more app locking applications than I can count!  Kinda important when you have your e-mail or your Facebook, or even your period tracking app on there BUT want your 6 or 9 year old to be able to play a game every once in a while and not have to hover over them in case they push the wrong icon.
I just LOVE the responses from Apple Manics whose solution is: "Just don't let them use it!"  "Keep it away from them" and especially the one response I found on here "Why would you need to lock an individual app?" Just go to the Android market and see how many "app locker" options there are and how many times they have been downloaded.  This is a HUGE issue with Apple iProducts....every kid wants to play with it, with an App locker, a parent can be free to make them happy without them seeing your private stuff.

  • Can't write to Buffalo Linkstation

Since downloading Mavericks I can no longer write to my linkstation.  I have found a workaround to mount the folders:
From any Finder window type in Command+K to brink up the "Connect to Server window". In the Server Address field, type:
         cifs://IP_Address_of_Buffalo_LinkStationNAS
But I still can't write to it!  It's very frustrating as this is where all my work files are stored!
Anyone know how to fix this?

I can. Oddly, it fixed itself. However, the owner is root, but I can still create files and such using a non-root user. I am sharing it with Windows and such, so will that affect my access in the future?

  • Can't write to temp directory

hi! i'm trying to install Oracle9i enterprise edition on a Windows XP Pro system. once i click setup, it gives me a message saying that the installer can't write to the temp directory?!
on checking the temp directory, i found that it's marked as read only, and there's no way i can't uncheck it, it just keeps coming back?!! even if i create a new folder and specify it as the temp directory, it is the same.
is this a problem with the Oracle installer or windows? cos i'm installing other softwares(from other vendors) and it's okay.
i am already having the full computer administrator rights.
    thx.

Can I somehow disable DM's awareness of the source control? That's in "Preferences>Extensions" - disable versioning support there. Still I won't recommend to save it over existing design - existing directories will be deleted including svn directories. It's safer to save the content in another directory and copy it back to versioned directory; also files that have older date should be removed from versioned folders.

  • Can't Write to my Micro SD card on my phone using USB cable

I can see the files on my krzr phone when mounted via usb cable, but I can read/write using Bluetooth just not with USB isn't that wierd?
(I've read some forums about locks on the cards this is the super tiny kind with no slidable lock)
If have a lot of music want to transfer and the bluetooth takes a while
Can't change when look at permission in info.
    Any thoughts..

You can likely read/write through bluetooth because that wouldn't require any extra software on the Mac's end. I think that accessing the phone through USB requires interface software on the Mac. The KRZR may not come up as what is called a "USB Mass Storage Device" and thus can't be used as a disk. What you can do is take that MicroSD card and put it in a MicroSD --> SD Adapter. Then you can get a USB card reader and put the card into that and it would mount on your Mac. As far as I know about Motorola phones, you would be able to put MP3's, photos, etc on it, but I don't think ringtones can be transferred this way.

  • Since update to 10.5.6 can't write to XServe/XRaid

Since updating several Mac Pro workstations to 10.5.6 from 10.5.2 We can't write to our XServe/XRaid running 10.4.10. We can read files off the server but any attempt to write to the server results in the file copying 4 to 44kb of data then hanging. Other machines running 10.5.2 have no issues.
I have checked permissions on the XRaid, repaired permissions on the workstation, created new users on the workstation, created new users and folders on the XServe/XRaid and nothing changes.
As soon as the file starts to copy onto the server the user connection changes to asleep/disabled.
I would like to roll back a 10.5.6 machine to 10.5.2 to test if the update has buggered something up but am unsure what the best method is for doing this. Any assistance would be appreciated.

There are two methods you can use: Archive and Install or Migration Assistant.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
Migration assistant requires access to a bootable clone of the workstation you wish to roll back or a
Time Machine Backup of the workstation that you wish to roll back, for migration to take place and
successfully transfer your original apps and settings to a fresh OS X install version of your choosing.
If any of the other workstations are similar (same apps and settings), you also have the choice to
migrate apps and settings from one of those machines via firewire or network.

  • Leopard can't write on a SMB share

For some reason Leopard can't write on SMB share. I've connected to my "usual" server at my work with the propers credentials and I haven't succeed. It's weird because with Tiger I use to have "read and write" privileges and right now with Leopard I haven't been so lucky.
Someone out there having the same issue?

I've worked out a solution to this on my local network where all of the Macs are running Leopard. In part Leopard resets share permissions, so they need to be configured again. And Leopard also appears to be stricter than Tiger in managing shares. I can't give specific solutions, as every system is different. But the general principles are:
On the system you want to access via SMB, in System Preferences, Sharing, assign read/write privileges to one or more users to all shared folders and drives.
On the remote system, when you connect to a share be sure to log in as a user that you have assigned these privileges to. By default you will log in as guest or unknown, which will limit your access privileges.
Alternatively, you CAN assign read/write to guest, but this is not a good practice for security reasons.
If you have an existing share reference to a Mac on a Windows PC you must delete it and recreate it.
If you are connecting from Windows and your Windows user id and password are not registered users on a Mac you should open My Computer, go to Tools/Map Network Drive, choose a drive letter and path to the Mac disk or folder (e.g.\\macmachine\username or \\macmachine\macintoshHD), then click "Connect using a different user name" and enter the user name and password for the Mac account with the privileges you need.

  • I can't write to my Drobo

I have a new iMac (like this):
I am trying to connect the Drobo that I used to use with my Windows Computer.  It has 4 drives @ 3TB each, and the whole drive is over half full, so I am not terribly interested in the cost that it would take to "back up" that whole disk pack.  It took some shenanigans (reboots of both the drive and the computer; disconnections, and reconnections; fiddling around with MAC Disk Utility) to get it to show up in Finder at all.  I still have issues with it unmounting and needing to remount it, but that's not my main issue.
    THE REAL PROBLEM:
Though I can get the Drobo to show up in finder, and I can read from it, I can't write to it.  Based on some earlier searching I tried this terminal command, which helped it to show up in finder, but didn't seem to affect it's being read-only:

    Hi iTunes-1,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  The error message you posted indicates a possible firmware update is needed for iTunes for Windows to work with your CD drive.
iTunes for Windows: Updating the firmware on your CD or DVD drive - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201852
Having outdated firmware can cause issues using CDs and DVDs with iTunes for Windows. Firmware is a type of software stored in a chip in hardware that can sometimes be updated.Identifying drives and firmware versions
To run CD Diagnostics, follow the steps in this document.
After following the steps to run CD Diagnostics linked above, look at section three to find out more about your optical drive(s).
Here is an example of what section three might look like:
In this example there are two drives. Drive E is a Samsung DVD-ROM drive with a model designation of SD-616 that has firmware version F000. Drive F is an NEC drive with a model designation of NR-7900A that has firmware version 1.08.Updating the firmware
If the optical drive you are using came with your computer, check with the support site for your computer for a firmware update. Typically you will need to go to the support website for the computer maker and click on a "downloads" or "updates" link, and then enter your computer model designation and operating system version to see what updates are available. Then look through the available updates for a firmware update for your optical drive. Download the updater and run it. If you need assistance applying the update, contact the maker of your computer.
If the optical drive you are using came as a separate part (was not included with a computer), check the support site for the drive maker for a firmware update. Sometimes the manufacturer is not clear in the CD Diagnostics results. In that case, you may just have to search the Internet for the drive model designation. You can usually find out who made the drive by looking through the results of such a search. Once you have identified who made your drive, go to the support website for that company. Look for a "downloads" or "updates" link, and then enter your optical drive model designation. Download the updater and run it. If you need assistance applying the update, contact the maker of the optical drive.Verifying that the firmware was updated
    Run CD Diagnostics again.
Examine the CD Diagnostics results. The firmware version for the drive should be the new version.

Also, you mentioned that you have been successful burning a CD with the Windows OS.  Make sure that you have closed all software programs that can access the CD burner so that there isn't a conflict for the drive.   Sometimes chaning the burn speed from "maximum" to 8x can also help in this situation.
I hope this information helps ...

I am trying to user cfSpreadSheet functon. The first question I have is, can you write the file on a client machine? I tried but they all end up on the server drive. Scecond question, is there a way to do row and column range formating in CF9.0? SpreadsheetFormatCellRange function is only available for ColdFusion server version 9.01.
    Thanks.

To expand on Dan's answer: CF doesn't have any interaction with the client browser at all: client->server comms are handled by the client and the web server; the web server simply asks CF to provide the response data if the file requested is a CF file.  But even then all CF does is process the requested file and return data to the web server.
Also, one of the restrictions of the HTTP protocol is that that there is *no* *way* that the server can write to the client machine.  All it can do is send data to the client agent (eg: a web browser) in response to the client agent requesting it.  Can you imagine the sort of security problems one would open one's self up to if a remote web server could write to your PC????
