CAN the Mac Pro deep-sleep with the Apple Raid Card?

So, reading through previous posts, there seems to be a problem (or 'feature' to charge the battery?) that prevents the Mac Pro from sleeping when the Apple Raid Card is installed.
Can users owning this setup corraborate? Is this indeed the intended way to work?
Thx,
Dan

as far as I know, deep sleep is only available for portable machines. if you meant regular sleep I cant help you because I haven't got a RAID card.
edit: I may have confused deep sleep with safe sleep… sorry.

Hello (hopefully someone can shed some light on my issue)
I own as above a MAC PRO (Early 2008) this has a RAID card installed along with two 15k.7 cheetah hdd (320gb) and a spare drive, (which i made a regular drive)
a while ago i had to replace the RAID card battery, so i did this, over a year later the same thing happened again, but as previous just left it and the system seemed fine for ages, until last night i was working in PHOTOSHOP and everything just froze and the screen kind of appeared GREEN, could not do a single thing. So restarted the mac, this time grey screen for ages and a message appeared, (macs version of blue screen) (see attached).
I restarted the machine and this time a flashing question mark folder!
    could not do a thing.
so i found my copy of snow leopard and got the computer to run this and at least launch the DISK UTILITY and (Interestingly in the drop down menu RAID UTILITY was also in the menu) but it did not matter which utility i used the (RAID or DISK) neither could see any of drives, just the dvd drive.
so looked around on you tube and various forums and discovered if i take out the RAID CARD and re-plug the main lead from the RAID card back in to the LOGIC BOARD I would be reverting the MAC to a normal regular non-RAID computer.
After performing this HARDWARE task and inserting all three HDD, and running the DISK utility from the drop down menu via the SNOW LEOPARD disc.
(interestingly since the RAID card had been removed the RAID UTILITY  from the drop down menu no longer appeared). running disk utility I can now only see the regular (spare) hdd and DVD Drive, but the two RAID HDD , again, still do not show up DISK UTILITY?
O.K. so i could chuck out the RAID card (AND RAID HDD) and just go with a regular set-up, and run a back restore from Time Machine on a NEW hdd purchased.
but what is wrong with the RAID, is the card at fault or are both HDD used for the RAID knackered? can i perform any tests, to see whats what?
thanks for your help in advanced.

hello people, the issue was in fact the GRAPHICS card nothing to do with the HDD or RAID system ( although this did cause issues with the RAID system it basically lost its way) below is my replay to another similar  problem some one else had!
working in photoshop and then everything stopped working and the lot froze! only option was to force shutdown (via button).
and try to restart, hoping all was fine, this was not the case :-(
I had the added issue of the RAID card system, that i have, this was confused to say the lease and would not behave or work, causing the start up to hang.
so i thought the HDD must be bust and the root cause. ( but soon learnt it was not the cause )
...bought a new HDD removed the RAID card and replugged the cable from RAID card into LOGIC board, ( making the computer act like any normal non-RAID system). I managed to install the OSX, using the snow leopard disk way. once the mac was running, i started to notice the screen would flicker and started to see 'artefacts'. so i started to reveal my symptoms to the web and forums and soon discovered that my graphics card could be the issue all along?.
    (nvidia geforce 8800gt 2x dvi).
I read up on that a fix, could be either A. reply the thermal paste, as the card could be over heating or B. stick the card in the oven trick.
Tried option A. first and nothing still issues, so last night took the plunge carried out option B. and ta da it worked! i even managed to run
from my new HDD my lasted install OS X, absolutely fine. I then thought, maybe i could repair my RAID so replugged all the HARDWARD back in and
carried out a disk repair and disk permissions on drives( took a small amount of time), via the SNOW LEOPARD disc - (Disk utilities) and this worked and now have my system working as it was just over 6 days ago.
what was the cost to get this?  bought a new hdd so 40.00gbp and thermal paste and cleaner kit ( your still need to do this ) search video card trick on you tube.
and renew thermal paste, approx 15.00gbp, technically i don't need the new HDD, but it was all part of the trial and error way i went. ( i do have extra storage as a result!)"

  • Is there a firmware update for the Apple RAID Card [early 2009 Xserve] that will take it beyond the E-1.3.2.0 version and allow it to see 4TB drives?

Is there a firmware update for the Apple RAID Card [early 2009 Xserve] that will take it beyond the E-1.3.2.0 version and allow it to see 4TB drives?

I have a few of these RAID cards in a couple servers, and then I have an earlier version of the RAID card in a few different servers.
The earlier servers are running non-apple 1.5 TB drives. It will be interesting to learn if this firmware update will indeed allow me to boost the capacity by installing non-apple drives, as the firmware previously has not.
Ohh I'm excited to update and try! This will greatly help out if it does!

  • I can't Mac Pro to AirPrint  with my CanonMX922

I am having no luck getting the MacBook pro to AirPrint with the Canon MX 922; (all updates loaded); it works fine using the USB.  It used to work sporadically at first, but then I was still enthusiastically in discovery mode.  Now I forgot the magic pass word.  I read the troubleshooting in Apple support, but 'm not tech savvy enough follow up.  Any and all help would be appreciated.  thanks!!

To Print via Wi-Fi, your Printer needs the same information a new Mac would need to join your network:
    • The Network_name to join
    • The Network password
    • a Manual IP Address in the correct range, if you choose to assign one (recommended, not required)
Since it cannot talk on your Network until it knows those things, the only way to tell the Printer about them is through the Control Panel on the Printer itself.

  • How far can the apple n card reach?

I live in a townhouse community and with the g card I can see 7 to 10 other wireless routers. Some of the access are locked down and some are open. The ones that are open are to far away to have reliable connection. My question is will the update be able to give me further reach to those access point?

The update will do nothing to improve your range on AB or G, it will enable you to use the N frequency when combined with an N wireless router, will give you significantly better range and connectivity.
If one of the networks in your area happens to be an N (unlikely because they are so new) then you would most likely have no trouble hacking/logging into it.

  • 2010 Mac Pro with Apple RAID card - "Drive carrier 00:03 removed"

I've got a 2010 Mac Pro with the Apple RAID card and 4 internal identical Seagate ST32000641AS 2TB drives inside.
I've never had a problem with the RAID card (either battery or in operation) except for one thing:
Almost every time I shut the machine down (which I try to do as rarely as possible), it keeps losing Drive 3, the spare.
(See RAID Utility event log snippet below.)
[I wish I could understand why this Apple RAID card keeps losing the spare across power-cycles/reboots, but I digress.]
So I just adopted it as the spare and it spawns the rebuild and many hours later, everything's fine again.
... until the last time I rebooted (Jan. 2nd).
After the usual "I lost the spare" message upon login, it began the rebuild.
But this time, about 11 1/2 hours later the rebuild stopped and RAID Utility reported "Drive carrier 00:03 removed".
Bay 3 is now missing in the Controller view.
I powered off the system last night, and left it off overnight.  Today I took all the drives out, blew the dust off and reseated them.
Same thing.  Drive 3 is still missing, and now the rebuild task aborted.
The drive bay location shouldn't matter, right?  Can I swap the Bay 3 drive with the Bay 4 drive?
I figure one of two things would happen:
    (1) It will report Bay 3 as being there but Bay 4 as being missing, same situation as is now.  Meaning the problem is in the Bay 3 spare drive.
    (2) It will report Bay 3 as being missing (despite a 'good' drive being present) and Bay 4 will be the (unattached) spare, and the RAID set will be unviable.  Meaning the problem is with the drive bay itself, not whatever drive is plugged into it.
If "Drive carrier removed" is trying to tell me the disk is bad, why do I not see any log messages about it?  I suppose a spare that never gets used could go bad from lack of use, but ... no messages at all?

    I was talking about this.
This looks like a RAID 5 setup without the parity to me. I would said it basically a RAID 0.
Also you metioned "I guess that previous spare must really have gone 'bad', despite having never been used! "
I wiped everything out, I selected the 3 disks and clicked on "Create RAID Set" with RAID5 selected and the "Use unassigned drives as spares" option checked.  The 3rd disk has always been marked as the spare ever since then.  You do not have a choice to create a "RAID5 setup without the parity".  If I wanted a RAID0 I would have chosen a RAID0!  raidutil now says
    % sudo raidutil list raidsetinfo
                                         Total     Avail
Raidsets      Type       Drives       Size      Size  Comments
    RS1           RAID 5     1,2,3,4    5.23TB    0.00MB  No tasks running
Every time the system would 'lose' Drive 3 on boot, I would just keep rebooting until it was 'found', and then manually re-assign the now-'floating' drive as the spare - and the RAID would rebuild.
There was never a problem until the day that prompted this post - when it would not find Drive 3 no matter what I did.  I turned the Mac Pro off for several hours until the drives had all cooled down and it still did not find the drive.  I left the machine on but unmounted the degraded volume until I got the new replacement drive.
I really don't understand what you are getting at. It's like you are trying to tell me I set it up as a 4-drive RAID5 with no parity(!) and that I was in grave danger because one of the disks was gone.  The actual RAID contents (spread across Drives 1, 2 and 4) were never in danger, unless a 2nd disk had failed while the spare was not seen by the Apple RAID card.  I wasn't too worried about that happening.

  • Mac Pro with Apple Raid Card - 1 drive OSX (JBOD) + 1 drive Vista?

Can anyone walk me through what I'd need to do to set up an early 2008 model Mac Pro with the Apple Raid Card pre-installed and 2 500 gig drives, so that I can have OSX on the first drive and Vista on the second?
I know it defeats the purpose of the raid card, but...
What I've done so far is:
    1. Removed drive #2
    2. Install and using Raid Utility, add the first drive as a JBOD set/volume
    3. After install, shut down the machine
    4. Re-add drive #2
    5. Restart
    6. Use disk utility to add drive #2
I tried to use bootcamp, but it only wants to put windows on the first drive - which won't work because it is RAID.

Run Vista off an ATA interface in the 2nd optical drive. There is an SATA 2 ATA adapter.
I think you can boot Vista off some RAID controllers, check out Highpoint RocketRAIDs. Should be able to configure the RR.
Boot Vista off USB is a stretch.

  • Apple RAID card II - will it work in single CPU Mac Pro 4,1?

Will the Apple RAID card work in a quad core 2009 Mac Pro?  I'm refurbing a used Mac Pro I got at a great price and just wondering if I can put in this card (which was "thrown in" with a used 8 core I also bought) with the idea of doing a RAID 10 to experiment with getting top disk read/write performance. I know most do not like the Apple RAID card II but it might be a cost effective way to max out performance on the single CPU, quad core Mac Pro. Ultimately I want to falsh the firmware to 5,1 and upgrade the CPU to a W3690 hex core. I plan to use this box for photography, light video and possibly sound editing. If my plan will result in high benchmarks and provide some fault tolerance I'm comfortable with using the card. I have heard from other users that the new card is much better than the first version and that it actually works pretty well. Any insights appreciated.

    Heck!
Im about to win an eBay auction for a blue Apple RAID card together with a pair or SAS 300gb cheetah 15.5k discs for 75 bucks *happy*. Would have been healthy fast upgrade for small investment I thought?!
Guess it probably would have been if the thing worked!?
Why doesnt it work? iPass cable or something like that?
Suppose I still want to go the SAS route with those drives for performance. Any other cards not too expensive that will enable SAS in the Pro?
I use my MP 4,1 as a photo edit workstation but I also keep it on 24/7 for home server, web server, nas, backup etc. So i like to use items that are made for round the clock usage.
Or i just get inexpensive SATA drives and SoftRAID them. So RAID 0+1 is no problem in software RAID?

  • Non-Apple RAID card with internal drives possible on 2009 model ?

    Hello there,
I have decided against the Apple Raid card, since it does not support any other drives than the ones sold through the Apple Store and it also only supports up to 1 TB drives.
My goal is to have 3x 1.5 TB drives in a RAID 5 array.
Does anybody know any hardware Raid 5 capable adapters, that can be used with internal 1.5 TB drives & the early 2009 Mac Pro model ?
    Cheers,
    Martin

Once upon a time, in a land far far away, ATTO and LSI, and Adaptec mainly owned the storage market for Mac controllers, and even then in those happy times we heard there was Voodoo in the land, and a curse on what were the Rules of SCSI Voodoo, and one had to be careful that a drive really was certified and tested, and one had to insure which firmware version one was talking about, not just any which firmware - and controllers also had to be updated as well.
Signal processing over SCSI with good active termination, cable length, and 160 pins (and cable strands) (and no noise or crosstalk, good insulation).
If one did all of the above, and was careful, you were rewarded with a working storage controller and array and the best possible performance at the time.
And sometimes you could venture off the reservation... a little, and some drivers could patch and work around bugs in firmware or other problems - just as bugs in cpu, boot firmware, and microcode can be patched by the OS kernel. And people would pay for retail drivers, or they would have to rely on the vendor's bundled driver (that may only work on their own drives and no others).
Hard Disk Toolkit, Silverlining and others made name for themselves, amoung others that now have faded into oblivion for most.
But it still exists when you venture beyond consumer and pro-consumer devices and venture to use FC-SCSI, SCSI, and SAS. And taking a chance when you try to use off the shelf SATA storage products and solutions. There are times when OEM drives really are OEM-only and a good thing; and times to avoid.
And there is no list of any kind of successfully used non-Apple drives, though there is word-of-mouth of a few that definitely need to be avoided.

  • Does my macbook pro retina 2015, can go deep sleep with sd card inside it?

I heard some problems about MacBooks don't going to deep sleep if an sd card is inside it.
I have an sd card with my media, because I don't want my macbook full and I wanted to know if he can go to deep sleep with an sd card inside.
If I just need to unmount it for it to go to sleep but can leave it there, I head there's an app that can solve that easy called Jettison.
    Can you help me please?
    Thanks in advance!

I've had the same problem after a software update since early March this year. Wondered it might be the update of Safari 4.0.5 or ProKit 5.1. Although I took them to the apple store in london last week, they deleted sleepimage in Terminal and then it turned out nothing changed. However, they just haven't got any clue at all. Then, the other day I tried adding a new user account and removing battery then pressed power button for 5 secs, either way did not work. Indeed we should get their attention. btw, i'm using a mid2008 15" macbook pro on 10.5.8.

  • Problems with EFI Firmware Update to 1.5 for mid 2010 Mac Pro, and sleep issues

Hello to the community, I have run into an annoying issue.
I need to update the EFI firmware on my 8 core mid-2010 Mac Pro. I downloaded the EFI update from the apple website from here : http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1321
But everytime I download it, as I click to install, it gives me the message:
    Alert
This software is not supported on your system.
But clearly this is the correct EFI for my computer. I tried burning the Firmware restoration onto a CD from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1320
But the computer did not respond the way it said it should (with the 3 flashes/beeps etc.) and have the optical drive open for the CD.
    So I'm completely stuck.
*Also my Mac Pro had issues with sleep, when I put it to sleep, sometimes when I try to bring it back, it restarts itself, and other times, it just turns itself on and the monitor screen remains black, so I have to hit the power button to turn it off then back on again. This only happnens when the computer has been put to sleep for a slightly extended period of time, roughly 20mins +, sometimes longer.  I was trying to solve this problem by first updating the firmware because I think it could be related to that, but I've had this problem with the firmware so I couldn't find out. This is actually the bigger problem for me because it will affect my work. I am currently using an iMac while I fix up this mac pro.
I'm a music composer so I've upgraded many aspects of my system due to work. I have a 1TB Samsung 840 evo SSD, 2 seagate 2 TB HDD, and 1 WD 1TB HD (the original one in the mac pro), along with 32 GB of RAM. So my only problems are the firmaware and the weird activity when the computer is put to sleep.
Some help would be greatly appreciated!
