Cannot clear "Current read-only" on pass through disk

This is not the end of the world, but it's very annoying so I'm hoping somebody can explain what's going on or perhaps suggest some additional troubleshooting.
Here's the scenario: Server 2012 Core VM  with the file services role installed and running as a role on a Server 2012 Hyper-V failover cluster. IDE 0 is a standard VHDX in clustered storage. There are 2 pass through disks on SCSI targets 1 and 2. I
proceed to attempt to add a 3rd pass-through disk:
1. Create a 750GB LUN
2. Mask the LUN to the cluster
3. Online the new disk on a cluster node
4. Initialize the disk on the node
5. Offline the disk
6. Using Failover manager, add the disk as new Available Storage in the cluster
7. Using Failover manager to modify the file server VM's settings, add the new storage to SCSI target 3
8. Using diskpart on the VM, clear the readonly flag from the disk
At this point, I was able to create a partition on the disk using new-partition with the -usemaximumsize flag, but I was unable to format it. It turns out the new partition size was 0 bytes. So I went back into diskpart and lo and behold, although the readonly
flag is cleared, the "Current readonly status" on the disk is still yes.
To test the issue, I offlined the disk in the VM, removed it from the virtual SCSI chain, removed it from cluster storage and then onlined it in the owner node. I was able to partition it, format it and create an empty folder, so it is not flagged readonly
at the host or SAN.
So I offlined it on the node and added it back to cluster available storage and then added it back to SCSI target 3 on the VM.
Again, I removed the readonly flag from the disk and again it cleared but the disks "current" status remained "Yes" and I was unable to manipulate the disk.
Stop/start vds did nothing and as this is a production server I could not restart it midday.
So I offlined the disk in the VM and removed it from SCSI target 3, then added it to SCSI target 4. This time, when I online it in the VM and use diskpart to clear readonly, both readonly and "current" readonly clear just fine and now the pass-through
disk is operating as expected alongside the other 2 pass-through disks on the server.
Any ideas what went wrong in all this or how I can clear SCSI target 3 for another disk without having to restart the VM?

Hi,
If the disk that you want to add appears in Disk Management but does not appear after you click Add a disk, confirm that the disk is configured as a basic disk, not a dynamic
disk. Only basic disks can be used in a failover cluster.

  • Reading hyper-v pass-through disks using WMI?

How do I read pass-through disks for a guest VM from a Hyper-V using WMI? I'd like to read the pass-through disks that are available to a guest VM using the below mentioned ways:
    1. Add a disk to Hyper-V server, take it offline and assign it as a physical disk to VM
    2. Configure iSCSI initiator in guest VM to get a disk directly from storage array
    3. Use VFC to export a fiber channel lun to guest VM directly.
    Thanks/Hem

You had another post with very similar questions, and I replied to it.  A broad answer is to use PowerShell as it does most, if not all, of the WMI work for you.  If you are having issues, it would be helpful for you to post specific questions
about the issues you are seeing.  If they are scripting questions, you would reach more scripting experts in the Scripting Guys forum (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/scriptcenter/en-US/home?forum=ITCG).
And you can go to the scripting gallery (http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/) to find examples of many, many different things.

  • Should I Install SQL Server 2008 R2 on a VHDX or Pass-through disk

    Hi,
I am in going to be setting a virtual server running Windows Server 2008 R2 on my Hyper-V cluster and I will be also adding SQL Server 2008 R2 once the OS is configured. Can you please suggest whether I should setup a VHDX or a pass-through disk? I have
read articles online suggesting to use a pass-through disk from my SAN but I also read that since Windows Server 2012, VHDX is as good as a pass-through disk, especially because it will allow to have snapshots taken, unlike the pass-through which will not.
Please advise on whether I should chose a pass-through disk or a VHDX.
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi Aquila,
There are three basic types of Virtual Hard Disks (VHDs) that you can use with VMs, such as dynamic VHD, fixed VHD, and differencing disks. Usually, the fixed VHD is almost always the best choice for virtualized SQL Server systems that run a production workload.
You can use dynamic disks for noncritical production workloads, as well as for testing, training, and lab environments. Pass-through disks offer the highest level of performance for VM storage, however, Pass-through disks can't be moved without incurring downtime,
and they don't support VM snapshots. For more information, see:http://sqlmag.com/sql-server/sql-server-virtualization-tips
In addition, there is an article about how to setup boot from VHD for a SQL Server. You can review the following link.

"The juice isn't worth the squeeze" (c) ...
Tim is 200% correct here: any performance gains (if any...) you'll get will fade in darkness compared to management burden you'll have with pass-thru disks (issues with failover, VM migration and no
real support with a major VM backup vendors). Making long story short: don't do it.
StarWind Virtual SAN clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

  • Need help on Hyper V 2012 for configuring pass through disks

    Hallo guys,
I have 7 hypervisors of Windows server 2012 running on bare metal, all are in cluster. I also configured SCVMM 2012 server.I created 10 Vm's. Now i want to make clusters of 2 node each & assign LUNs to my VM.
Storage guys have assigned all the LUNs to my physical servers, when i go to disk management of my physical servers , i see all LUNs are offline state(by default..)
My question is how do i assign the LUN to my VM? what is the steps for this ? i also wil be making 2 node cluster of VM's.
    Regards,
    Amol Sutar

    Hi Amol,
    >>i see all LUNs are offline state(by default..)
It's normal. To ensure the Guest has exclusive access to the storage, the LUNs must be placed in an
Offline state from the Hyper-V server perspective.

  • OVM support for NPIV and pass through disks

    Hi Gurus,
    I have a couple of questions -
    1) Does OVM support NPIV?
    2) Does mapping the physical disks via the phy: definition in the vm.cfg file equivalent of pass through disks to the guest OS?.
    thanks!

Thanks!. The pass through question was actually in context of usage with snap* products from netapp as they work with VMware. All the snap* work with RDM's in VM's (pass through's), so i was wondering if the snap* could be made to work with the phy: def to the VM's as well. The RDM def should be equivalent of the phy: def ..right?. So ideally, they ought to work?No idea, to be honest -- I haven't worked with NetApp gear yet. You're probably better off checking with NetApp directly as well.

  • Cannot Login to Read Only Domain Controller

One of my Read Only Domain Controller Servers shut down unexpectedly due to a power outage and now I cannot login to it anymore. When the server powered on again, it came up with an error regarding on of the hard drives failing (RAID1)
I get a message Access is Denied when I try to login with one of my domain admin accounts. As it is a RODC, there are no local accounts for me to use. The RODC is running on Windows Server 2008 R2. The server is also running as a DHCP/Print/File server for

used by the server. This error can also happen when the target service is using a different password for the target service account than what the Kerberos Key Distribution Center (KDC) has for the target service account. Please ensure that the service on the
server and the KDC are both updated to use the current password. If the server name is not fully qualified, and the target domain (domain.local) is different from the client domain (domain.local), check if there are identically named server accounts in these

  • Cannot put in read-only the vendor screen - Authorization

    Hi all,
I would like a role to display in read-only mode the vendor (business partner) screen (BBPMAININT).

    Hi
I am afraid, it's not possible to make read-only mode using SAP Roles (using PFCG transation and authorization values). BBPMAININT transaction is a Web transaction and is Intended for Edit/Change/Display in same transaction.. and hence cannot be controlled via Authorizations/ Roles.

  • My Drive D: is locked into an attribute of Read-Only

    Hello,
For some reason, as of recent, my Drive D: has become a Read-Only drive. I have only one physical drive so this is an extension as originally purchased in my 1.5 yr. old ASUS notebook, then running WIN8. I had upgraded to WIN8.1 and then about several months
ago, again upgraded to WIN8.1 PRO to allow the encryption of this machine for required work purposes. I installed Bitlocker as required. Although Bitlocker was apparently successful, it did not fully encrypt the machine. After a call to ASUS, I find this machine
is one of those that the manufacture just felt not to include that capability! So currently none of the drives are checked to include encryption and had been working fine until about a week ago when I tried to move some files to Drive D:.
    I have done the following:
    1. Ran CHKDSK, no problems
    2. Ran DISKPART with the Attrib commands which were successful to remove read only, but in realty didn't change the condition.
    3. Verified ALL permission on this drive were provided even in the Advanced option, no issues.
    4. Ran professional Drive Management software which was unable to modify the drive due to the read-only status.
I was unsuccessful to find any tool or process in which to check the overall status of Bitlocker or to completely remove it. I have no need for it since it can't perform, and therefore continues to be my personal machine. I mention Bitlocker in case this has
a bearing. This has been working and performing well since that time until last week.

    Hi,
Please try the following method to modify the D drive read only flag for test.
    1. Run DiskPart
    2. List and select the disk(LIST DISK followed by SELECT DISK <disk #>)
    3. If the disk is offline, bring it online by running ONLINE DISK
    4. View the attributes by running DETAIL DISK
The command DETAIL DISK may give an output similar to the following
    DISKPART> detail disk
    <SAN Device>
    Disk ID: ########
    Type : <type>
    Bus : #
    Target : #
    LUN ID : #
    Read-only : Yes
    Boot Disk : No
    Pagefile Disk : No
    Hibernation File Disk : No
    Crashdump Disk : No
    5. To clear the read only flag, run ATTRIBUTE DISK CLEAR READONLY
    6. Exit DiskPart
You should now be able to write to the disk.

  • Clear form Option resets read only properties

    Hey guys,
Using your help I got my problem solved last time. So when I have a series of Questions, I set all questions to read only in their properties except the first Question. Once the first question is answered, using the script below, I then set read only for the next question to false and students can answer the next question now. So using this pattern, it allows them to answer one question after the other without skipping any.
The Mouse Up action for each "Radio Button1" could be:
    if(event.value != "Off") this.getField('Radio Button2').readonly = false;
Now, while this works perfectly for time being, I keep experimenting with this form with lots of modifications made as needed. When I use the "clear form" Option to empty all the form fields before saving it, all the read only Questions reset and now when we close and re open the file, any question can be answered and the script used above has no more value.
What is the script needed here to avoid the read only questions to reset when i use the clear form option. Please help me out here!

Clear the form menu action or the "this.resetForm();" script only resets the values of the fields.
You script will one execute when there is a Mouse Up action, and if a radio button or check box is set to read only then there can be no field actions. The field is locked to user interaction and can only be manipulated by JavaScripts.
There is no trap for the reset or clear action so even if you created a button to reset and clear the form fields with the read only property set, you would still have the issue of the user using the menu option. You can add a document level script to clear the read only property of fields when the form is opened.

  • Unable to save Word documents when accessing them directly from the site because the document never converts from a read-only even though the User chooses to enable editing

Issue has only popped up recently and cannot reproduce in a Test environment.  Unaware of any SharePoint changes, so hoping someone can point me in the correct direction.
Previously Word document did not have to be physically checked out, but rather the editing of the doc also checked out the doc in a document library. This is the way we want it to remain –
no manual check-out process. Now if a doc is edited without being checked-out, there is an issue with the process as the application thinks the doc is read-only (message received when trying to save the doc) even if enable editing is selected. The
following message appears when you try to save the document:
This message can appear if you have been editing a file that was opened as read-only. A file opened as read-only will have (Read-Only) appended to the file name as it appears in the title bar of Word. You can still save the document, but you must
save it by using a different file name. If you use Windows Explorer to change the read-only properties of the file, while the file is open in Word, it will not enable Word to save the file. Word must open a non-read-only version of the file in order to save
it by using its original file name. If you have not made any changes to the file, you can close it, and then use the following steps to make the file writeable. 1. Click the File tab, and then click Open. 2. Browse to the file and right-click it. 3. Click
Properties, and then clear the Read-Only check box. 4. Reopen the file. If you have made changes to a read-only file, you can save it, and then use the following steps to give the modified file the original file name. 1. Click the File tab, and then click
Save As. 2. Enter a different file name, and then click Save. 3. NOTE: Adding "Rev1", or "Mod1" to the original file name may help you to remember it later. 4. Click the File tab, and then click Close. 5. Open Windows Explorer. 6. Browse
to the original read-only file. 7. Rename the read-only file. 8. Browse to the new file. 9. Rename the new file to the name of the original file. Do not delete the read-only file until after you have determined you no longer need it.
Previously, when check-out was optional, a file was checked out automatically when someone opened it for editing, unless it was already checked out. The editing commands notified the User that the file is being/was checked out.  The real issue is the
word doc can no longer be saved as the application still believes the doc is read-only.

    Hi,
According to your description, you give the domain admin full control over files on the old file server, but you cannot move the files to the new file server. After pull the files from the old to the new file server, the domain admin can only read the files
    on the new file server.
How did you move the files from the old file server to the new file server? Did you setup replication between the two file server or use robocopy?
Please check the files permissions on the new file server to see if the permissions are changed, then share the folder on the new file server to everyone to see the result.

  • "Pass through" greyed out when sharing

I'm working with mpeg4 clips in imovie. When I try to "share" I use the "expert" settings and choose the same format to export: mpeg 4, but I take a big quality hit, even with the highest settings.
Since the files are already mpeg4, I then try to select "pass through." But it's almost always greyed out. If I share and select "selected clips only" then "pass through" is often available to select. What would make "pass through" grey out?

    just a guess....
iM doesn't handle the mpeg4 as mpegs (that's no editable format/codec), but converts it automatically into Apple Intermediate Codec...
so, I guess, selecting "un-edited" clips makes an export possible, any processed clips (added title, transistion etc) makes another conversion needed and therefore a share impossible...
but that is just a guess ...-
besides: you shouldn't use mpegs for editing... in technical terms possible, but not really recommended.... use a really camcorder, use mini-dv, use dv-codec, that's what iM is meant for......

I had the same problem with a hardware RAID array... I was installing Arch in an previously Redhat server.
The error I got just just before the read-only thing was related to the filesystem... (Arch was in reiserfs and /home in Redhat is ext3)
That read-only thing only happened when I was performing heavy load on the raid by rsyncing almost 300GB from RH to the new arch (No error while installing and configure a very complete system).
I though maybe it was that reiserfs wasn't good enough and I tried with no luck using jfs (the same I succesfully use in LVM in my laptop).
At the end I decided to get rid of the filesystem difference and It worked using ext3.
It worked perfectly for almost a month until last week that we had a crash copying 180GB from an USB external drive. We tried again and it worked with no problems. So in conclusion:
I used ext3 successfully but I have one crashed (after the read-only thing the system becomes useless) documented.
I know this is not an answer but I hope this help you or maybe help someone to give us a point.
P.S: The raid arrays are in the same computer (PERC6 I think) using the aacraid driver. One is raid 5 (RH) and the other one is RAID 0 (Arch),

  • Tabular Form Read Only Date Picker

    Hello,
I have two or three Items with date pickers and do not want to implement
this code because it will be too many buttons on my form. I need to clear one item
at a time when the datepicker is readonly but, in a tabular form.
    function f_clear_items()
        {$x('P1_ITEMA').value = ''};
        {$x('P1_ITEMB').value = ''};
}Then once I create a url button and pass this function I can clear the datepicker's. But, I
was wondering is there a cleaner way to this.
I have other items on the page that are named the same but, in different tables. I only want
to clear each date picker item at a time. This code works fine for a regular form.
-Element Post Element Text for the Item to Clear
a href="javascript:setValue('P1_ITEMA','');">Clear Date</aThere is a thread named 'How to clear a read only page Item...?' that states how this code works but, does not

and not using a button for each item, thanks in advance. I am using Application Express 3.2.0.00.27.

    Dan,
I totally understand your point of view. So, this tabular form aspect was not tested once the Clear Date link was discovered to clear a Read Only date field. Yes, using a button to clear a date is great but, I do not want to clear every date or specified item with the click of one button for this application. It is very useful but, not for my needs at the moment.
Basically, if a date is selected and it needs to be cleared out you can just delete the value. But, if the date is readonly you can not clear/delete the date value unless you have the Clearing functionality for a particular item using the datepicker. It may not be worth the trouble Dan like you state by adding this extra code to the calender. If an invalid date is entered an error will appear anyway.
Thanks alot Dan for expanding my mind and showing me some JQuery and providing me with this link to do some further research if needed, thanks again.
