Cannot launch data base homepage

Question

I am running windows xp professional sp2. Oracle 10g express installed successfully on my pc but when i try and launch the home page it cannot find the page and gives an error saying "cannot find server or dns error". I tried http://localhost:8080/htmldb/ with the same result. Oracle services are running. any suggestions on what to look for?

You may also want to make sure you can ping either 127.0.0.1 or localhost. From the DOS command line type
ping 127.0.0.1
or
ping localhost
If neither of these respond then the problem is with your local hosts setup, or being caused by a firewall. If both respond then I suggest that port 8080 may be being used by something else. Try resetting the database to use a different port, say 8081, as follows
Launch the SQL Command line from the icon
At the SQL> prompt type connect / as sysdba (as shown below)
SQL> connect / as sysdba
Connected.
Now type exec dbms_xdb.sethttpport('8081'); (as shown below)
SQL> exec dbms_xdb.sethttpport('8081');
PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
Now try connecting on http://127.0.0.1:8081/htmldb
If that doesn't work, then this is not the problem. I would then change the port back to 8080 using the procedure above just to keep things consistent with the default install.
