Canon 32 gig VIXIA HF G20 HD - FC6?

Hi Gang
My friend is getting an incompatibilty warning that he can't log and transfer using the Canon 32 Gig VIXIA HF G20 HD in FC6, (within an older Power Mac G5).
Aside from using iMovie 11, does anyone have any suggestions - we can't afford an Intell Dual right now.
Thanx
Mike

Hi Meg
As per Shane, I actually just tried to get 'Clipwrap' for my own G5, and couldn't find a version for 10.4.
If I'm understanding this correctly, you'd have to have something to start with - some type of file that was pulled off the camera - correct?
The problem is, only iMovie 11 will aceept clips from that camera, and export Via its own version, (whatever that is?)
Are you saying that Clipwrap has a built-in capture software to connect to the camera?
Thanx
Mike

  • IMovie 11 & Canon VIXIA HF G20 HD

    Hi Gang
My freind is using a Canon VIXIA HF G20 HD to import clips into iMovie 11. Camera is recognized, seems to work fine, but would like to export HD to use in FC6. It was assumed iMovie 11 is not the best way to prepare/export the MT files for FC?
Someone recommded ClapWrap for 10.6, thru his Mac Mini, (we tried it), but the camera isn't being recognized.
If he stays with iMovie as a 'capture intermediary', what are the best export settings to be imported into FC6, then later for HD Disc?
    Thanx

  • Can't import from Canon Vixia HF G20

I have two identical Canon Vixia HF G20's, both with video data on the internal drive.  One mounted as a camera in the import window and the data imported like a charm.
The other camera is mounting as a drive, so I can't import the MTS files.  I called Canon support and the basically walked me through how to connect the camera to computer and then said to call Apple. How can this be? Is there something I'm missing here?
I called Canon support and they basically walked me through how to connect the camera to computer and then said to call Apple.

As you can see, the camera is showing up as a drive in the devices field.  Any ideas why it would do that instead of showing up in cameras?

  • What is a good video converter for iMac?  Premiere 6 will not capture from the Canon VIXIA HF G20.

What is a good video converter for iMac?  Premiere 6 will not capture from the Canon VIXIA HF G20.

Rather than convert, you'd be better off capturing with a more current version of the program -- one that supports AVCHD video. Otherwise, you're in for a lot of headache. A converter isn't going to solve your problems.
BTW, when you say Premiere 6, do you mean Premiere 6 -- which is over 10 years old? (There was no Premiere Elements 6.)
Trust me on this: Capture with a Mac version of Premiere Elements 11 or 12 and your video will be perfectly compatible with any Mac program.

  • Canon Vixia HF G20 & FCX

I'm having trouble downloading footage from my Canon Vixia HF G20 to Final Cut Pro

Too quick asking for help. It was working I just didn't realize it. Thanks anyway.

  • I have a Vixia HF G20 Camcorder. I would like to purchase a 58mm lens filter to protect the lens.

I have a Vixia HF G20 Camcorder.  I would like to purchase a 58mm canon lens filter to protect the lens in additon to the lens hood that comes with the camcorder.  I am wondering whether the filter, when installed, will get in the way of the rectangular autofocus window at the base of the lens and impair autofocus.

    Hi kcgnj7491!
    Thanks for posting.
The 58mm Protect filter will attach to the camcorder at the same time as the lens hood with no problems.  It does not obstruct the Instant AF sensor.

  • Sony HDR-CX580V or Canon 32GB VIXIA HF G20?

I need a recommendation on which camera would be a better fit (ignoring cost) for the following criteria:
Editing will be done in PreE10
After editing and addition of titles and transitions the video will output to a standard DVD for local television use.
Video format specs for Canon cam:
    High Definition
    AVCHD Progressive
    1920 x 1080i / 60 fps
    1920 x 1080p / 30 fps
    1440 x 1080
    High Definition
    MPEG4
    1920 x 1080p / 30 fps
    1920 x 1080p / 24 fps
Video format specs for Sony cam:
    High Definition
    MPEG AVC/H.264
    1920 x 1080p / 60 fps
    1920 x 1080p / 24 fps
    1440 x 1080i / 60 fps
    Standard Definition
    MPEG2
    740 x 480i / 60 fps
Here are my questions.  Which video format should I be shooting in do produce the best possible quality DVD while having a smooth editing experience? Is it better to go with MPEG2 format since it is already in a similar format as the output? If so what preset should I select for the project? Do I need to upgrade to PreE12

    johnjv24
What do your computer resources look like? Does your computer have enough resources for AVCHD (also designated as MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) editing?
Will your Premiere Elements 10 be running on Windows 7, 8,or  8.1 64 bit? Pending further information, I am not seeing a need to go from version 10 to 12.
Pending further information...my suggestion would be
    AVCHD 1920 x 1080p30
using the Premiere Elements 10 project preset
    NTSC
    DLSR
    1080p
DLSR 1080p30 or DLSR 1080p30 @ 29.97, depending on the properties readout of your 1080p30 (29.97 or 30)
Then, Share/Disc/DVD disc with preset of NTSC_Widescreen DVD Dolby.
The above is suggested to get the best possible result for your specific export selection DVD VIDEO format on DVD disc.
Please enter into this with the realization that you are starting with 1920 x 1080 and will end up with 720 x 480 with a 16:9 flag to stretch that video for display after encoding (and that stretch is not to 1920 x 1080). Whatever the video resolution, it will be encoded to the standard of the export choice.
What are your restrictions that are directing you to DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc which I believe to be your intent since you wrote
the video will output to a standard DVD for local television use
Or did you have in mind by that, exporting your Timeline to a file with 720 x 480 16:9 properties and putting that on a data disc as such or something else?
Lots of threads here on high definition taken to DVD-VIDEO (aka DVD) and expectations versus the actual results as well as the quality of Premiere Elements DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc in general..
Lots to discuss once we exchange additional information on your topic.

  • Vixia M40 or R52 or R62 for shooting yourself writing in the style of Vi Hart?

I want to write in pencil on a piece of lined looseleaf paper (i.e., school paper) with a camcorder overhead filming me write.  I want it to be crystal clear and readable, what I'm writing.
Vi Hart posts similar videos on YouTube although she uses a sharpie.  She said that she uses a Vixia M40.  Since they're discontinued is an R52 or R62 sufficient for the same task?  Do either of these models supersede the M40?
    Thank you.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I don't know what the replacement for the Vixia M40 is but the R62 and R52 have smaller image sensors than the M40.  However to find a Canon camcorder the the same size image sensor as the M40 will cost about $450 more (Canon Vixia HF G20).  I did see one (M40) that claims to be new and in the box on Amazon for about the price (with shipping) as the R62 and R52.  The larger image size will be better in low-light situations.  However, if you have adequate lighting then either the R62 or R52 should work.  From what I could find the specs for those are nearly identical.  You can look at the specs and see which one is best for you.  I saw one of the videos you are talking about and noticed how the scene is well lit.

  • Purchasing external firewire drive to work with Canon HV-30/MacBook Pro

I want to purchase an external firewire drive to run FCE4. I have a Canon HV-30 (Vixia). I have read that external FireWire drives do not work well with Canon DV cameras? Is this true of the Canon HV cameras? and if so, has anyone had success with a particular firewire drive model with this camera?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
I don't know for this model but it's the implementation of firewire protocol on Canon's models that could make a problem.
So, you could have problem but it's not absolute.

  • Digitizing DV from Canon GL-1 camera

FCP Studio does not see my Canon GL-1 camera. iMovie DOES see the camera, so it's not a connection problem. FCP will see my Canon HDV camera (vixia HV30), so it's not FCP. It's just a settings issue within FCP, I assume -- but I can't see where in the app. to adjust the settings to allow FCP to see the GL-1. Any help would be appreciated.

From the menu bar: Final Cut Pro > Easy Setup. Choose DV NTSC (and Anamorphic, if applicable). Click OK.
Menu bar again: Sequence > Settings. At bottom left, click on "Load Sequence Preset". It should already show DV NTSC. Click OK.
In the Log and Capture Window: Click on Capture Settings. It should read FireWire NTSC. If you still cannot see or control your camera, change this setting to FireWire Basic.
Your camera should be connected and powered on before you open FCP.
Some Canon cameras do not like to be on the same FireWire bus as other devices. Disconnect them.

  • Adobe Premiere CC Crashes When Selecting Multiple Clips

This project was already derailed by multicam, now that I've got my assembly edit ready to go, I've discovered a new show-stopper:  Premiere Pro CC crashes when I select multiple clips on the timeline.  I can't select more than 3 clips at a time, or the entire program comes crashing to it's knees.  Anyone else experiencing something like this?  Can anyone else reproduce this behavior?
Here's a video of the experience:
    http://youtu.be/DPOUinOSzDE
    Any word on an update?
    ASUS G75VX
    Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit
    GTX 670MX, 3GB GDDR5
    16GB RAM

Progress.  I've been able to isolate the problem.  On my timeline I have some "regular" clips and some "merged" clips.  Regular clips are from either source: a Canon 7D (MP4 / MOV) or a Canon VIXIA HF G20 (AVCHD).  The Merged clips are only from the Canon 7D only (for video) and an audio recorder (MP3 at 320kbps).  The 7D footage is 1080/24p.  The VIXIA also shoots in 24p.
Since "Merge Clips" sync on audio is not working for me, I've employed my former CS6 workflow:
    1. Sync all of the video and audio clips through PluralEyes 3 resulting in a preliminary sequence, "Clips_to_be_merged_sequence".
    2. I work my way through each of the clips, adjusting the audio track(s) for variances in drift between the on camera sound and the audio recorder.  I do this enabling "Audio Time Units", rather than video frames, so I can get extremely acurate.
    3. When I have a timeline full of nicely syncronized audio/video pairs, I merge clips, one painstaking clip at a time (of course I set up a keyboard shortcut for this).  For the merge, I "sync on In points".
    4. The merged clip is added to my project panel.
    5. Now, when it comes time to choose my sound bite selects, I load the merged clip into the Source panel and mark my Ins and Outs.
    6. Time to create a subclip, of course with the new SOFT handles. (I'VE BEEN WANTING SOFT HANDLES FOR A LONG TIME!!!)
    7. The subclip appears to be properly created and placed into the Project panel.  It even shows the correct duration (i.e. 14 seconds)
    8.  When I drag that subclip onto the timeline it drags the entire length of the parent clip, without in or out points (not just the 14 second subclip).
    9.  I undo and decide to go back through the original clips again; mark ins and outs and simply drop to the timeline (either Insert or Overwrite).
So in the end, I'm using sections of the Merged clip, but I'm not using Subclips of the Merged clips (because that doesn't work).
Now, what's happening, though I didn't know it when I recorded the video above, is that Premiere is crashing any time I select both "regular" footage and "merged" footage.
    So, two bugs here:
    1. Can't use Subclips that are derived from Merged clips in ANY timeline.  Once dragged to the timeline it expands to the full duration of the original clip.
    2. Can't select both "regular" and "merged" clips at the same time on the timeline.
JStrawn (staff) was kind enough to offer to take a look at some small sample files.  But my interview clips are very long, and I'm concerned that if I export them, to make them shorter, they may not actually exibit the problems I'm having on the original clips.
Anyone else using this type of "Merge Clip" workflow that could reproduce either the subclip-from-merged-clip bug or the mixed-selection crash given the steps above?

  • Delayed playback after editing audio in a Multi-cam Source Sequence

I have a Multi-cam Source Sequence (MSS).  It contains 3-cameras, only two of their audio tracks, plus two more audio tracks from separate audio recorders.  This MSS is, of course, embedded into my main timeline, where I've performed my cuts between cameras.  Playback has been beautiful and smooth until I mixed the audio levels between the various audio tracks in the MSS.  Now, back on my main program timeline, playback starts approximately 3 to 4 seconds after hitting the spacebar or L key.
Some mixing was performed on the new Audio Clip Mixer.  Most mixing was done manually by adding and manipulating keyframes directly on the timeline.  I have Minimum Time Interval Thinning set to 400 ms, so that I don't get a million useless keyframes on my audio tracks when using either Audio Mixer.  For what it's worth, here's a screenshot of a portion of my MSS mix (approximately 1 minute, 30 seconds).  It is typical of the rest of the MSS timeline (approximately 40 minutes; though I've only mixed the audio for a roughly 10 minute segment so far).
Footage is from two Canon VIXIA HF G20 (AVCHD) cameras and a GoPro (MP4).  Again, playback was beautiful before messing with the audio mix in the MSS.  I've checked the Media Cache, Disk Cache, etc and it's got plenty of space left (around 30 GB).
Playback literally feels like it's 1998 all over again and I'm working in Premiere 5.1!
Could these, relatively few, audio keyframes really be slowing me down so dramatically?  If so, can I do something to make it run faster?  If this is not the cause, what else might I be missing?
    === System Specs ===
    i7-3630qm (Laptop)
    NVIDIA GTX 670mx - 3GB GDDR5
    16GB RAM

My multicam sequences are usually created by Red Giant's PluralEyes.  (I would LOVE to create them with Premiere's new Audio Sync feature, but so far that only works about 0% of the time).  So the footage is synced with PluralEyes 3.2.1.  A timeline is exported from PluralEyes and then imported into a project.  Once in Premiere the sequence is only a "regular" sequence.  I know of no way to convert a regular sequence to a new sequence (that would be a cool feature; right-click on a regular sequence and choose "Convert to Multicam Source Sequence").  I create a new Multicam Source Sequence (MSS) using any two video clips.  I choose In-point for the sync.  The MSS is created and opened.  I select all on the timeline and delete.  I now have a blank MSS.  I select all from the PluralEyes generated "regular" sequence; copy; paste into the blank MSS.  Now my MSS is ready to use.
Are you saying that audio is ALWAYS "Adaptive" when created as I've outlined above?  How can it be changed?  What should it be?
If I remember correctly, Premiere CC has been setting up these Multicam Source Sequences with four channels, instead of stereo.  I thought it was weird (I don't recall this happening in CS6).  So I looked into the manual and hacked my way around to reducing the channels to stereo.  Through track assignment, etc (I can't remember where) I was able to get all but one of the tracks to playback.  Ultimately that track was unimportant, so I ended up deleting it rather than continuing to fight Premiere to make the track playback audibly.
I'll look into the link you provided above.  Meanwhile, did anything I say here spark any further ideas?  Things to try?

  • What is the difference between the HFG10 and the HFG20?

I have searched for so long and to no avail. Googling has uncovered nothing. Can someone PLEASE explain the difference between the Canon HFG10 and the HFG20?! Is it NTSC and PAL? Is the hf10 the older model? I'm using an HV40 at the moment, and I am looking to upgrade to either an hfg10 (or hfg20) or an xa10. Thanks for the help!

    Hello Sergeatnslander,
We're so glad that you contacted us through the Canon Forum for help with the differences between the VIXIA HF G10 and the VIXIA HF G20.
To start off with, the VIXIA HF G20 is the newer model.  Both are NTSC, provided that you purchase the North American model.  The PAL standard is for Europe, not used here in North America.
The main differences, other than the nice re-design of the VIXIA body itself, would be the following.  Note, these are all either things that the VIXIA HF G20 has that the VIXIA HF G10 does not, or have been improved upon.
The VIXIA HF G20's HD CMOS Pro Image Sensor provides extraordinary flexibility with extended dynamic range with enhanced gradation and significantly more light capture for 20% improved low-light performance over the VIXIA HF G10.
Intelligent IS ensures effortless stabilization no matter what the shooting situation.  Intelligent IS in Auto mode:
    - Dynamic IS (default)
    - Powered IS
    - Macro IS
    - Tripod Mode
IS Modes other than Intelligent IS; Dynamic IS and Powered IS settings can be selected:
    - Standard IS
    - IS Off
The VIXIA HF G20 also includes Touch Decoration options to add an element of fun and excitement to your creations.
We hope this helps you with your decision between the two camcorders!  We hope you have a great day!

  • HD video newbie question related to camera shooting mode

    Hi everyone
I apologize in advance as this has been covered (sort of) but I cannot definitively answer my question reading other posts so perhaps your answers will clarify this for myself and future interested parties.
I am ready to purchase a Canon HF S100 VIXIA camcorder after looking at a lot of reviews.
I have iMovie9 and will be using this exclusively (I hope?)
I am aware that if I edit anything or add transitions or image stabilization the video will be downgraded to SD, this is not related to my topic.
    Questions follow
The camera supports 24p Cinema mode and 30p mode. Both of these shoot at 24 or 30 frames per second in HD using 60i which I presume means that each progressive frame is encoded in two sequential interlaced frames which must be combined (or something like that). I would like to use this mode as it has much better low light performance and I have a lot of indoor use, BUT---
Will iMovie9 support this and display the video as a HD progressive scan frame or will it discard this information and keep it as 60i or fail or something else?
    Thanks for your help.

    Lionden wrote:
.. 1080/60i - recordings made with the PF24, PF30 frame rate are converted and recorded on the memory as 60i
afaik, most (all?) consumer camcorders, claiming '24p' (or Cinema or...), scale on export (or record) to 60i ..
for me, this '24p' is mostly marketing... 24fps is a historic 'standard' for film/celluloid. in times, when displays claim 200fps, .. why 24? why not simple 29.97/30p (or here: 25)...?

  • Tape camera videos not showing up in events!?

    Hey all.
I've imported videos from a tape-recording Canon HD CMOS VIXIA HV30. They are saved on the Mac as events, but there is nothing in the iMovie workshop! I've tried dragging over the files from their saved location on the Mac, but they refuse to be added.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

How did You import from Camera to Mac ?
    • Using USB-Cable and droping it into the Mac Hard disk - like moving a document

    • Using a FireWire-Cable and in iMovie use the Capture function ?
