Canon HFS100 AVCHD to DVD Question

I have ordered the Canon Vixia HFS100 which records to AVCHD MPEG4-AVC / H.264
The site says it records to 60i, 24p Progressive (records at 60i), 30p Progressive (records at 60i)
For now, my end result will be downscaling HD to DVD (I've read that CS5 does this "well")
When the camera arrives and I start filming... what recording setting should I use to finally create a DVD?

30p is virtually worthless..
While it may not have as much apparent utility as 60i, 60p, or 24p, I wouldn't go so far as to call 30p worthless, virtually or otherwise You are probably on to something as far as 30p not being well-suited for DVD playback in many/most shooting scenarios, 30p has become my de facto shooting format for anything that I know is going to be utilized solely on the web. It's a nice balance of enough frames to lessen some of the 24p judder and not too many frames to necessitate a bigger bitrate budget when it's encoding time. Plus, it eliminates the deinterlacing step which not only speeds the encode, but also results in (my opinion) better-looking encodes.
I realize the OP is asking about DVD, so I apologize for taking this a bit off-track, but it is something to keep in mind in case you're shooting something for web-only release. I don't know what kind of work (or hobby) shooting you'll be doing, so Jeff's suggestion of trying them all to see what works is the best bet. Anyway, it's another arrow in the quiver...
FWIW: one TV show I can think of that shoots in 30p (in case you want to see what it looks like) is Food Network's Good Eats... it looks... different... and you'll start to see it in other programming. For example, I think there are several soap operas that shoot in 30p now--not that I know anything about those

Initial Setup for Canon HFS100

I am setting up Final Cut Pro 7 with my Canon Vixia HFS100 (AVCHD).
Recording Settings:
24 Mbps
Frame Rate: PF30
I also have some footage in 24Mbps and 60i.
I have examined the drop down selection of all the formats, but I am still unclear which to choose for each of these different footage types.

Canon 5D to SD DVD workflow clarification

I have done a lot of research here and other places and got some good info but cannot find a definitive answer to my particular questions. (Short Drama - 22 minutes)
Permutations and combinations of where I should do what is doing my head in.
_What I have done:_
- Shot on Canon 5D Mark II
- Converted h.264 files to AppleProRes (HQ) using mpeg streamclip (maintaining 30FPS for sync reasons)
- Resultant files are set as "Upper Field" in logging info.
Sequence settings:
- Made a copy of AppleProRes 422 (HQ) pre-set changing timebase to 30 FPS
- This pre-set is set to "No Field Dominance"
- Conformed "Upper Field" files to match the sequence.
Editing all OK in FCP and timeline. (couple of pans a bit dodgy and a few artefacts but to be expected)
My questions:
1. Best flow from timeline to SD DVD?
I have taken advice and exported using current settings but QT movie has colour changes from time to time. ( Was transferred to WD new drive at 800 firewire if this is of importance)
Afraid to take this to Compressor obviously.
1A. Should I go straight to compressor from timeline?
1B. Should I have kept my sequence settings as "Upper Field" and convert to Progressive later?
1C. Should I convert using QT conversion to 29.97 FPS? Or maybe do this in new Sequence?
Or not at all? Or in Compressor?
1D. What about de-interlacing? Is it necessary given my sequence is set to no field dominance or should it be done somewhere as the original ProRes files are upper field? Where should de-einterlacing be done if it is in fact neccessary?
In Compressor:
I will use setting for best quality MPEG for 60 minutes.
2. I have read some info about the importance of frame controls? Any advice?
2A. Should I set it a custom setting at 29.97 or leave it at 30 FPS?
Lots of questions - but I am sure someone has been successfully along the Canon 5D to SD DVD route and any help would be greatly and urgently appreciated.

Thank-you so much for all that information and easy to follow instuctions. Sorry for my delay in replying.
I am about to follow your instructions regarding the cinema tools workflow and will reply about results tomorrow.
In the meantime, before I read your post, due to the color problems in the "current settings" exported master file, I have exported into compressor directly from the timeline. I followed the advice gleaned from other threads about frame controls and as described by you here.
Of course this meant that at no time before compressor did I conform to 29.97. Only in compressor.
The results were pretty good when I went right thru to a SD DVD - although not perfect, some slight jittery areas on actors when moving quickly. (more than slight in a just a few places).
I originally stayed in 30 FPS because our sound was recorded seperately and at 30 FPS. So I kept everything native except of course converting the original h.264 files to ProRes 422 HQ 30 FPS.
When I did that in MPEG streamclip as suggested by Philip Bloom, I deselected "Deinterlace". I noticed though that in FCP logging info, the ProRes files were "upper field". This maybe because in streamclip, the box with field dominance only has upper and lower choices and I think deselecting the delinterlace button was enough. In any case, in FCP, I used only Progressive sequences.
About the Color Changes:
Since posting, I have realised that the color changes occur at the subtitle points! I used a plug-in called Text Edit to make the subs. It is all fully rendered in the timeline and looks fine there. Only on the exported QT current settings export file does it occur. (Didn`t occur on above mentioned compressor conversion to m-peg 2).
I am now, in addition to trying your cinema tools workflow, going to put that original exported current settings file into compressor anyway, to see if the color chnages still shows after the conversion to m-peg 2.

AVCHD to DVD revisited

I am shooting 1080i 29.97 AVCHD footage using the Sony NX5U. I have followed the advice in this video for converting the footage to MPEG-2 for DVD authoring, but I'm not happy with the results:

Funny you should ask this. I was planning on waiting until tomorrow to respond to most of these suggestions because I am starting to wonder if it's my television that is the problem. I am authoring a DVD with the Mpeg2 DVD file in Encore CS5, then burning the DVD and viewing it on a Viewsonic 20" widescreen TV from an upconverting DVD player with an HDMI cable (I've tried two different models of player). I've already discovered that unless the sharpening on this TV is set to absolute minimum, the sharpening artifacts are very noticeable. Even after this adjustment, I still see a thin halo around people with light-colored clothing against a dark background. Also, the video is of a children's dance recital (yeah, I get the big time gigs, don't I), so there are a lot of artifacts when there is a lot of motion. I've tried playing the footage straight from the camera to the TV via HDMI, and I don't see any of these problems.
I'm going to take my DVD home tonight and watch on a different widescreen TV. I'll let you all know tomorrow if I see the same issues or not.

Interetsingly, the Premiere manual reads "Maximum Render Quality often makes highly compressed image formats, or those containing compression artifacts, look worse because of sharpening." I've been using MRQ, but since AVCHD is a highly compressed format, maybe this shouldn't be used? I tried converting a bit without MRQ checked, and it didn't seem to make much of a difference.

in iMovie8 recognize it well and edit is possible.

What happens when you point to the folder structure? Are you selecting the base level, or digging into the folders? Don't dig, do the base layer.

Can someone help with importing video from Canon XA10 (AVCHD) into PE 11?

In PE 11 when I import video from my canon xa10 (avchd) the quality is terrible, I also have a canon xa20, 60D and gopro that I video with and they all turn out with great video quality. Is there a reason why the xa10 video quality is bad? Setting I need to change?

Thanks for the follow up.
In Premiere Elements 11 and 12 takes over setting the project preset based on the properties of the first file drag to the Timeline. Sometimes it does it right; sometimes not. You can check what the project has set by using the readings from Edit Menu/Project Settings/General and the readings for Editing Mode, Timebase, Frame Size, and Pixel Aspect Ratio even if the fields look grayed out. If the project preset is set for NTSC AVCHD Full HD1080p30, then the Edit Menu/Project Settings/General should be as represented in the following screenshot
Please refer to setting the project preset yourself manually and then importing the source media into the project.

Trouble importing from Canon HG21 AVCHD - error message in iMovie 08

We bought a Canon HG21 AVCHD camcorder. I am able to see the videos and play them when connected using iMovies '08. When I import them, however, I keep getting an error message (no number, just error in importing, check video). I have about 10GB of space. I thought I'd try simply importing a 25 second clip to see if that was the problem. Still, same error. I tried hooking up my external drive to import to that instead, but it will not show it as an option in the drop down menu.
I've spent all day trying to find the solution. I'd love some help if anyone can tell me what to try next.

You do not have enough space on the internal drive to do the import. (You need a good bit of free space just to run the operating system.)
So you need to use an external drive.
For iMovie to see an external drive, it must be formatted as MacOS Extended (journaled). You can check the formatting by right-clicking on the drive in the Finder and selecting GET INFO. If the drive is FAT32, it will not work, but it is likely that you could reformat it.
Note: Reformatting a drive will erase everything that is on it, so be sure to back up anything you need to keep.
To reformat, open DISK UTILITY. It should be in your Applications Folder under the Utilities folder.
In Disk Utility, select your external drive, and press PARTITION. Make a single partition, and choose GUID as the partition scheme. When that completes, press ERASE, and choose Mac OS Extended (journaled) as the formatting. Let it run and you are done.
iMovie should now see this drive.

Anyone got any good AVCHD FOR DVD Presets they can share for AME CC Latest Version when exporting from Premiere Pro CC Latest Version?

Just wondering if anyone has for download or can share some templates or settings that I can use to create a One Stop Encode that will suit both AVCHD HD DVD Disc and be good as a Computer MP4 File for PC and Android Mobile Playback and maybe even good enough for Full Bluray Mastering.
Currently I am using mostly HDV 50i Material with a bit of 1080 30p and Mobile phone type MP4 files thrown in.
I typically Encode to for DVD SD and HD BD. However I would like to be able to take advantage of putting some of the short HD Video to AVCHD DVD-R Discs.
I understand that the maximum bit rate is gonna be 18mbs? for AVCHD on DVD but am unsure what Profile settings I need to be compliant and as I say if create a good one MP4 that will be good for all formats
whether it be AVCHD DVD, Blu-ray Disc and good for YouTube uploading with possibility of compatibility with some of the Android Mobile Phones and Tablets.

Log and Transfer from Canon HFs100

I have connected my Canon HFS100 via usb cable to my mac and am able to use log and transfer to import/convert most of the clips. The problem I have is that it will not convert about 10% of the clips for some reason.
I am able to view and play the clips that are not able to be converted in the player in the log and transfer window, but when I add them to the queued section to convert them it tries to convert them and then fails. I get the Red Stop sign with exclamation point.
All video was shot one after another and nothing different was done.

Deleting FCP Preferences:
Open a Finder window. Set the view mode to columns:
Click the house icon that has your name next to it.
Click the folder "Library" in the next column.
Find and click the folder "Preferences" in the next column.
Find and click the folder "Final Cut Pro User Data" in the next column.
Move the files "Final Cut Pro 6.0 Prefs", "Final Cut Pro Obj Cache" and "Final Cut Pro Prof Cache" to the Trash and empty it.
Note: For FCP 7 the file will be called "Final Cut Pro 7.0 Prefs", obviously.

Pre12 – unable to burn AVCHD to DVD media

I'm using Pre 12 with Windows 8, editing AVCHD video, and want to burn AVCHD to DVD disk media (to play on a Blu-ray player). However, whenever I try Pre12 shows “media not present” as status, despite having a blank DVD in the drive. But, simply changing from AVCHD to DVD works fine.
Some background: I’ve been a Premiere Elements user since V1 and after purchasing a HD camera several years ago I’ve burned many short HD videos on DVD media s using Pre 10 and 11 AVCHD format option. However, that was before converting to a new computer and installing Pre12.
My new computer is a Dell XPS 8700, Win dows 8 64 bit, with an internal Blu-ray Combo Drive (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD). The drive shows in Windows Devices as “HL-DT-ST DVDRWBD CH20N”. It claims to read and write DVD media in either the plus or minus types. I’ve been using TDK single side DVD + media. I've reported the problem to Dell Technical Support without success.
So, I don’t know if the problem is with my hardware, media, or a bug in Pre12, and would greatly appreciate advice.

1. Yes, HD or SD video will burn (in DVD format) to DVD media on either internal or external optical drive. The reinstall of Pre 12.0 solved that problem.
2. There was no change to results when attempting to burn AVCHD to DVD media. The internal optical drive continues to show "media not present", while the external drive shows "ready"
3. There was no change to results when burning to Blu-ray which continutes to operate correctly - the external drive shows "ready" (and burns are still successful). Note that the internal drive can only write DVD media so isn't shown by Pre 12 for this task.

Final Cut Pro Settings For AVCHD Canon HFS100

Hi friends,
I am new to Final cut pro and digital video. I just purchased a Canon HFS 100 and am shooting in 30p and am going to be editing on FCP 6.0.1. From Easy Setup on FCP I have changed the FORMAT to HD, RATE to 29.97 and USE to DVCPRO HD -1080p30. Will this be the most favorable settings if I want to make high quality HD videos for the web. Or should I leave it on FCP Easy Setup default which is FORMAT: all formats, RATE: all rates and USE: Custom Setup.

Your version of FCP was the [first one|http://www.apple.com/support/releasenotes/en/FinalCut_Pro_6.0_rn/index.html#appleref%3Adoc%3Auid%3ATempBookID-ReplacedWhenAssociatingWithMessierRevision-CH1-SW59 ] to offer some support for AVCHD.
You want to use Log&Transfer (FCP main menu>File or ShiftCommand8)to convert your footage to ProRes or AIC, which are editable formats that FCP likes.

Connect your camera to your machine, then try to Log&Transfer.
Please note that AVCHD support was improved with following FCP 6.0.x versions so you may want to update your current version if something does not work.
To update just click on the Blue Apple of the OS top menu and look for software updates.

Canon Vixia HF R21 camcorder question

Problem: Just bought a Canon Vixia HF R21 HD camcorder. Just shot a football game with it using the highest quality setting called MXP. This is 1080x1920 at 24Mbps and a frame rate of 60i. Output is 1080i. The video looks awesome on the camcorder screen.
In PE9 it looks jittery AND WAVY. Almost like looking trough heat waves.
Questions:
1. I did not set the camera to sports mode. Should I have?
2. Besides 60i, there are PF30 and PF24 frame rates. Would either get rid of the jitters?
3. Is the jitters I'm seeing because I don't have a Hi-def monitor or TV or Blu-ray player?
4. Don't know about 1080i vs 1080p.
5. All I know is I want what's on the camera to be on DVDs or Blu-ray DVDs.

Workflow - AVCHD to DVD but without optimised footage?

I am an enthusiast and I have a few Panasonic prosumer camcorders with which I shoot basic AVCHD and ultimately I burn DVDs - which people tell me look just fine.
When importing I have “Leave files in place” checked and I create Proxy files ONLY as obviously these work best for multicam editing. I used to create optimised files too (someone told me I should) but they don’t seem to do anything for me - am I wrong?
After editing, I click on Share to create a 'Master File' from which I go on to author the DVD iso. I leave the 'Media' on 'Proxy’ (is there any reason to ever change that?) and all by itself I get a file with the following characteristics:
Dimensions: 1920 x 1080
Codecs: Apple ProRes 422, Linear PCM, Timecode
Color profile: HD (1-1-1)
I’m very happy with that but my question is: should I be creating optimised files too? If so, WHERE in my workflow would they come into play?

Sounds right to me.
AVCHD should work fine in up to date date Macs.
Using Proxy (without switching) in the Timeline will give you a sub-standard DVD as that will be the size of the export.
Roughly 30% of original.

AVCHD to DVD: Really ugly results

Basically what I'm trying to do is take AVCHD (off of a canon HG10 camera) and burn the movie onto a DVD to be played in 'normal' dvd players. When I do this, the video is downright blurry. When I render to a test file that is in 720 or 1080 its fine and looks spectacular. Is there a problem with PE7?
Any help would be appreceated....

In my case it was not a resolution or aspect ratio issue. I have come to the simple conclusion that PE7 outputs to DVD like poo no matter what you do :). My workaround was to:
Edit the video in PE7
Output to file DV
Burn to DVD with software that came with my camera (that does nothing more than convert DV to DVD............Just like PE7 SHOULD be able to do but does not)
It looks 10 times better doing this than burning to DVD from PE7. I have yet to figure out how to turn off the PE7 to DVD poo filter.

Canon HF11 AVCHD and Premiere Pro CS4

I had been using a Canon Optura xi for years with good success, and recently with Adobe On Location with good success.
Recently I decided to take the plunge into HD and purchased the Canon HF11 which has AVCHD.
I realize now that without firewire support I cannot use On Location. Too bad because I really liked the ability to note my scenes, etc.
I'm having a little trouble getting everything to work together and was hoping someone could offer some suggestions.
My output is going to be hi def for you tube and for family movies (burned to DVD and/or AppleTv).
1. If file size is not an issue should I always shoot at highest quaility?
2. Would I choose the setting AVCHD 1080i30 (60i) non-amorphic?
What recommendations would you have for exporting to You Tube, DVD, and Apple TV. So far my exports have been a little blocky.
Last, would you recommend purchasing AVCHD upshift to make the editing process a little less painful ($50 vs a $3,000 for new system).

If I were to export from premiere for anything but youtube and maintain highest quality for playback on a PC what would you suggest? There are just so many presets I don't know what to pick. I've tried a few (Quicktime) and they look lousy.
Maybe I'm missing something, I see other people mentioning interlacing, etc. Someone else suggested shooting 24P to eliminate interlacing issues?
