Captivate 3 Training

hi everyone, our company purchased Captivate 3 months ago and
have been trying without much luck to find training - online or in
person on how to use the product to create different kinds of
learning activities. I've seen the overall tutorial, and every
webinar i've participated in by Adobe is a sales pitch rather than
a "how-to." any helpf would be greatly appreciated!

This is the captivate 3 user guide in .pdf form. (it's 408
pages) I think it will probably be exactly what you need. I worked
through much of it just like a tutorial when I first starteed with
Captivate 3 ( my first version) There is also a "getting started"
guide and quite a few element specific tutorials right on the adobe
site.
captivate
3 manual .pdf link
captivate
3 tutorials-
click the "create content" tab for great adobe site c3
tutorials
really there are lots of great tutorials for captivate 3 on
the adobe site...you just have to dig a little
I've only found 2 books specifically addressing Captivate 3
the above mentioned and "Adobe Captivate 3: The Definitive Guide ".
I think both books have their strong points. I bought them, but I
honestly kept referring to my user guide and the tutorials on the
site...
Perhaps you might look into upgrading ?(generally great deals
if you recently purchased an earlier version) ...and jumping right
into 4...My first Captivate experience was with 3 and I loved it,
but I think if I were you, I'd find a way to go ahead move up to
4...so many new and improved features it would be IMHO worth your
while to start there...

  • Embedding a simulation into a Captivate Training

I’m a new user hoping that one of you smart folks can
help me. I’m using Captivate 3 and using the Software
Training template that comes with it. As recommended, I am not
including the Playback Control because I want my users to use the
navigation buttons that are in the template. However, when they get
to the software demonstration in one of my lessons, I do want
playback controls to appear so they can play/pause.
I’ve looked at a few solutions including embedding by
simulation as a SWF or linking to a different project, but nothing
is working the way I want. Has anyone done this successfully?

Thanks for the reply. I can't put the demo at the end of the
project because my project is a group of lessons that the user can
move around in. Right now I'm considering two solutions:
    1. Convert the SWF of my demo to an FLV and embed the FLV
    with it's controls
    2. Just launch the demo in a new window. However, I'd like
the window to be sized correctly and not have toolbars.
I haven't been successful with either of these approaches.
Does anyone have advaise either on the conversion or the JS?
    Thanks.

  • Synchronize flv and interactive captivate training modules

Does anyone know how to synchronize flv, captivate, and
setting up the accordian component so that people can jump from
various cue points in the video? The only way that I was able to
get it to work was converting static images from powerpoint
presentation in flash paper. But what I'm needing is the animated
screenshots synchronized with flv video. The type of animation
created by RoboDemo and captivate. Any suggestions or ideas? I've
been looking all over the place all week for a possible solution.

    Please help a brotha out...

    Hi Michael,
I haven't tried AVI or SWF videos, but I've used several FLV
videos (though I had someone else convert them for me, so I can't
help you there). The main problem I've had have to do with where
the files are stored so that Captivate can correctly access the
files and play them back. Also, if you use a skin in the Flash
video, when you publish the file, make sure that the skin .SWF file
is published. If you are using Captivate 2 and happen to use the
corona skin, you need to change the "C" in CoronaSkin3.swf (for
example) to a lowercase "c", or else the published video won't play
at all (just gray - like I think you're describing). I've got some
2+ minute FLV files that play fine though once we got everything
squared away. Let me know if you have any questions about what I
described above (which doesn't have a whole lot of video cause I'm
a little short of time at the moment).
    Good luck,
    David

  • Captivate (elearning suite) full training course

I am new to adobe captivate and to the other softwares includes in the adobe elearning suite. I would like to have a full course as a newcomer. How can I get it?
    Thanks for any help.

    Welcome to our community
Many training providers offer training for the assorted applications contained in the suite, but I'm unaware of any course that covers all aspects of the eLearning Suite as a cohesive unit.

  • Is it possible to play two videos at the same time in Captivate 4

My idea is to create some e-learning material which shows a screencast of a powerpoint presentation and a video in the top left corner of the screen showing somebody presenting the slides.
Does anybody know if it is possible to do this with Captivate 4?
I know this functionality is provided in Adobe Director.
Any help regarding this will be greatly appreciated
    Kind Regards
    Jay

    Hi Jay
Do you have the eLearning Suite? If so, you have Adobe Presenter available to you. If you don't, you should be able to download the Presenter installation file and evaluate it.
Presenter is an add in for PowerPoint. The neat thing about it is that it provides for a Table of Contents type of functionality as you see is configured in Captivate. But the twist with that is you are able to do something you cannot do in Captivate. You are able to insert videos inside the TOC area!

  • 'Close Project' in Captivate 4 not working

    Hi,
I have a number of projects where I set the preferences to close the project, and it works in some and not others.
I have a slide with a 'Done' button.  When the user clicks it, it goes to another slide with nothing on it but the background and a text caption from the previous screen, and it is set for only one second.  Some of these projects close perfectly; others delete the text caption and leave the project open.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks, as always.

Hmmm, it was intended to show you that you simply cannot rely on the different means of closing the window. Close Project and the Exit button are essentially the same action, no? Perhaps I should amend the note so it specifically also mentions the action of Close Project.
The thing is, unless you are presenting your Captivat using EXE format, you are seeing a very generic overall issue with closing a browser window. And closing browser windows is inherently fraught with issues and seldom works as one would expect. The only way to make it work as you want most of the time is to ensure you always open the window using JavaScript so it's a child window. When you open in this manner you have more control over the behavior of the child window and can usually close it at will.

  • Captivate 4 Open url from a button not working?

    Hi All,
I have published a scorm course from captivate 4 and have installed to our servers. I would like to have a link to a document that is online (.doc) but whenever I click the transparent button it starts to load, opens a window (which has the correct title name) but then disappears with no warning or error message.
The link resides behind a transparent button, and has the settings On Success open url or file in a new window.  I know the problem is not specific to this document because I have had the same problem with a completly different online file location in the past.
    Please Help!!
    Many thanks in advance.

  • Open URL from a Captivate generated MP4

    Hello all,
I am putting together an instructional video (.mp4) using Captivate 5.5, the video will be targeting iOS users.
I will need to provide a way to open some webpages while the end user is playing the mp4 file. My thought was to include a button with an assigned action to "Open URL or file" and specify the URL.
This does not seem to work after publishing to mp4 format. Is that feature not supported in Captivate mp4 files? Or did I forget a step maybe? Is there a workaround to achieve the same result?
I'd appreciate any input on this.

    Hi there
Unless something has changed recently, it is my understanding that MP4 is strictly a video format and does not support hyperlinking or other types of interactivity.

  • Unable to open a project created by another team member in my Captivate 4

I have installed Captivate 4 on two PCs. According to my license I am allowed to install on my home laptop and on my work PC.
I am using Version 4.0.1 Build 1658. I also have all the latest updates as of October 13, 2009.
I am able to develop and publish an instance that runs on my desktop or on the Internet. The problem is when I try to edit an instance on my WORK PC that was created on my HOME PC.
When I click on OPEN and the file name "SampleDemoCourse.cp", Captivate actually goes through the motions of READING PROJECT and the LOADING PROJECT and it displays these actions on the lower left corner of my screen. Then it tells me the PROJECT PATH showing the directory on my hard drive where the file is located.
But it never really opens in Captivate. I cannot do anything after that.
    Any ideas, please?
I have uninstalled and reinstalled software many times with help of Adobe Support. I have checked to make sure my preferences are identical.
    Thanks,

    Hi Drew
    Normally it's pretty simple.
    1. Copy the .CP file(s) from source computer to intermediate media. (Network server, USB drive, CD, Etc.)
    2. Copy .CP file(s) from intermediate media to destination PC.
    3. Open Captivate and open file(s) in new location on destination PC.
At no point should you ever consider leaving the .CP file on a network drive and opening Captivate and browsing to the file to make edits while it is in the network location. You always want to work locally.
Another thing to consider is that Captivate seems touchy with CP files. You will want to ensure that all PCs are using the same version of Captivate. This includes patches. I wouldn't want to save a .CP file from a patched version 4 and expect to open it without issues on an unpatched version 4.

  • Having HUGE issues with captivate 4 and vista- receive MP3/wav error messages and 0x80070005 error codes- Is there help out there?

Just uploaded Captivate 4 Educator Version to my vista machine (Dell XPS M1530).  When right click Captivate 4 in admin mode, Adobe Acrobat 9 loads/configures.  [Question- Why does this happen every time, and can I stop?].  I then I import my ppt.  Then all the wav files embedded in the ppt come up with another error message unable to decode and import the selected wav/mp3 file.  Then when I go to do text to speech, I can pick out the person "Kate" but I also get the same error message- unable to decode and import the selected wav/mp3 file.  HELP!  There has to be another person out there that has had a similar issue.

  • Need to edit a Captivate file that won't open. Can the SWF be edited?

We are currently using Adobe eLearning Suite 2 (Cp5).
We have 2 older Captivate files (Cp 3 or 4) that will not open; they act like they're opening but eventually they just time out without the error message that you normally get with a corrupt file.
So all we have access to are the SWFs & zip files that were uploaded into our LMS.
We are switching to a different LMS and need to quickly make an edit to these files before they are uploaded to the new LMS.
Is it possible to edit the SWF (delete about 30 seconds of content off the end of each file) and still have them function as far as registering completion? And if so, what program would I need?

Sorry, but only Adobe can speculate as to why the older files refuse to open in the newer version. Phase of the moon? Jupiter aligning with Mars while the house of the Moon is in retrograde?
Personally, I'm going with the Mass Coronal Ejection theory!
Assuming there is really no interaction going on, you *MIGHT* be able to fudge things to get that last 30 seconds to go away by playing the SWF and using Captivate to record the SWF as it plays.

  • How do I display "Page $$ of $$" in a Captivate 4 project?

    Hello everyone,
Okay, I know that I can use a transparent text caption with "Page $$rdinfoCurrentSlide$$ of $$rdinfoSlideCount$$".
    The problems are:
    - I want this to be displayed in a very small font in the far right corner. Unfortunately, the variables are so big that I cannot place the text caption on the far right. Although using center justification and some spaces before this text, I can approximate the location I want this to display in.Unfortunately, even though the x/y coordinates are precise on every slide, the text moves around a bit from slide to slide.
Is there a better way to FIX this text into a specific spot? i.e. a fixed x/y location placehold for each of these variables?
    - Oddly, it only begins counting on the first page it is displayed. In my lesson, this caption is placed on the second slide... but it displays Page 1 of 26. I suppose I could subtract 1 from $$rdinfoCurrentSlide$$.
    - What is the best way to copy this text caption to each page of my project?
Must I really copy page to each individual page?
If I select "Display for rest of Project" I cannot remove it from a few slides where it is not appropriate. It cannot be covered up either - because it will flash there for a very short moment... doesn't look good.
    Thank you for your advice!

    Hi Shawn
On the slide where you inserted the caption, make note of its name. You find this in the Options tab.
On the slide where you wish to hide the caption, edit the Slide Properties and configure an On slide enter event to Hide the caption.
As for the brief display of the variable, you may be able to mask it out briefly. I say *may* here, as I'm not 100% certain it will work with the caption displaying for the rest of the project. But it's certainly worth a try! Just insert a Highlight Box in the position to obscure it briefly. If you want the appearance of the Caption fading into view, configure the Highlight Box to fade out.
Give that a go and see how you fare... Rick

  • Optimizing more than one photo at a time for captivate?

I'm creating half hour training modules that use roughly 100 slides with more than 100 photos/images during the 100 slides. The file works just fine but the IT department would like the download time to be quicker (was set to 75% downloaded to view and took 5 min, now set to 10% and runs after 60 seconds without tripping up or any other problems). The 10% works perfectly but the new concern is the bandwidth being used each time these modules will be downloaded to be viewed.
We were recommended to optimize all of our images used in our captivate files. Because I've done 3 complete modules with more than 300 images, my concern is in the time it will take to individually optimize each of the photos I used and re-import them.
Is there a way to use photoshop to optimize an entire group of photos at once? say a folder of photos?

    Hi there
I wouldn't expect those side effects at all!
I tried to post this earlier but the internet connection here is sporadic. I'll try again.
I might suggest a test. Choose 5 images to use. Make copies of the images.
Take the original unoptimized images and pop them into Captivate. Create a SWF and note the file size. Now optimize the other 5 and repeat the process. Then compare the two SWF files from Captivate. Difference in size? If not, perhaps optimizing beforehand is wasted effort.
In Captivate, you are able to control things at the slide level or globally. Click Edit > Preferences... > Project node > SWF Size and Quality node.

  • Can I Create a DVD in Captivate 5 to auto-run on Standalone DVD Player

I upgraded to Captivate 5 and created a 4-minute "infomercial" of our product. I was able to publish it as an exe so stores could play it on their Windows computer. I was also able to publish it as an Application so stores could play it on their Mac computers.
But how do I publish it for stores that just have a cheap stand-alone DVD player? Most DVDs the stores get from other vendors have a DVD with AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS files on the DVD and this just starts playing when they insert the DVD. I want to do that as well.
Adobe tech support said to publish my Captivate 5 project as SWF and check the Auto-play box. This generated about 5-6 files but none start up right away (although the one with an htm extension does run on my Windows Computer if I first click on it.)
Past Forum postings from years ago seem to say to Publish using F4V, convert using Adobe Media Encoder and then use Encore to create the final DVD. I did publish using F4V and then downloaded Adobe Media Encoder from your web site and ran the F4V file through that. Now I am stuck. Do I need to buy a $1,600 product called Creative Suite 5 to get to the last step and create a DVD that plays automatically when inserted in a Stand-alone DVD player? There must be a simpler (cheaper) solution.  HELP!!!

    Hi there
I'm guessing you will need to consider publishing as Media (F4V with Fixed Frame Rate). Then take that and pop it into a converter such as the ones you may easily find using Google.

  • How many PCs can I install Captivate 6.0 on if I purchase a single license?

I can't find this information anywhere. My two coworkers and I have Captivate 5 and want to upgrade to 6, but we are not sure if we can use the same license key for all three of our PCs. Does anyone have this info?
    Thanks
    Meg

    Hi Meg
Normally a license may be used on two different PCs. One intended for a work computer and one intended for a home computer in case you take work home.
I'm sure Adobe would frown upon using the two activations to occur on two work PCs that are used simultaneously.
You need three licenses. That would grant you six activations. One on each of the three work PCs and one on each user's home PC.
Keep in mind that I'm not a legal professional nor did I stay overnight at a Holiday Inn Express.
