  • Very slow capture for hdv

    Hi
I bought a Sony Hd camcorder, the Sony Hc7.
    It transfers using HDv.
I attempted to start making a movie with the footage shot on this camera in Final cut Pro Hd but it wouldnt read it as my version was pre support for HDV.
However the new version of Final Cut Express would read it and so I bought that. It does capture the footage but very slowly, a 30 second clip previously would take 30 seconds to capture. But now it takes about 1 minute to capture.
    Is this a function of
    1) Using Final Cut Express and not Pro?
    2) USing HDV, is it always this slow compared to standard Def?
    3) My Mac power? I have a G4 with 1.5 ghz Powerpc and 1.25 gb ddr sdram and about 50 gig in internal memory and the scratch disk is set to my external drive with 638 gigs of spare memory.
Any suggestions? I am not keen on buyng a new machine until Apple bring one out with a bluray drive.

It sounds as if it is converting HDV to AIC.
    What computer are you using?

  • Are there benefits to the Blackmagic Intensity Pro for HDV capture ?

Are there benefits to the Blackmagic Intensity Pro for HDV capture ?
    I have a Sony HDR-FX1 that records in HDV 1440 x 1080
I have already captured the footage to miniDV tape.
Can the intensity card get the full 1920 x 1080 video ?
I now use Premiere to capture my video and my HDV is in mpeg2 and my SD is in DV type 2 AVI
What format does the intensity card capture at ?
Are there other ways to capture that would make the footage better.
From what I have read allot of people have had problems with these cards.
Im just looking for the best way to get the footage off my camera with the best resolution.
    Thanks:  Glenn

    Glenn,
I have posted this before in the PC Buying Guide (post #23 and later), but have a look at this diagram:
The problem is that once recorded to tape, the material is compressed to MPEG and there is no way to get the data back, that were lost during compression. The only thing you achieve is that you lose device control, lose all timecode information, lose all metadata like date and timestamp and exposure data and lose the capability of scene detection. There are no gains to compensate the losses.
Compare it to a glass of orange juice, that was made by heavily compressing oranges. How do you think you can reconstruct the original oranges that the juice came from? Were there 4 large oranges or 6 small ones or a mixture? Were they light colored or were they dark or a mixture of light and dark?
BlackMagic in their marketing may lead you to believe otherwise, but the truth is they can only guess at how many oranges were used, their size and color. It is nothing more than a guess.

  • Correct settings for HDV capture

Hi. I'm using Premiere CS5.5. I went on a few forums to get the correct settings for HDV capture.
I can record the footage fine. However I saw a few things which didn't seem right.
After capturing the HDV footage, the file was a .mpeg file. Secondly, the clip was 1 hour and 10 minutes and
it was only 11.3 GB. Does this sound right? A 55 minute .avi file is 11.6GB. I thought a HDV clip would be quite a large size file.
If this dosen't sound right, is there somewhere I could go to, to check that my settings are correct? By the way I'm filming and capturing with a Canon XHA1.
The footage is 1080i. HDV. I've exported it and it looks fine. Just want to make sure I've captured it correctly and to the best quality.
    Thanks for your help.

The HDV format was advanced by Sony and others to use the same miniDV tapes used for SD.  In fact, your Canon XHAI can record and play either without changing the tape transport speed.
Your observation in relative file sizes is due to the fact that HDV is highly compressed (MPEG), whereas, SD (AVI) is not as highly compressed.  This is one of the reasons folks (such as Harm) don't consider HDV to be an edit format, but just a delivery format.
Note that what Harm was saying is symantics--you capture an analog source through a capture card that digitizes it.  When you transfer a image file from HDV or SD, it is already digitized, so a bit-to-bit transfer occurs.

  • Premiere Pro Does Not Support Audio-Only Capture For Some Formats, Such As HDV?

In the PPro CS 5.5 Help file  under, "Recording audio", it says:
"Note: To capture an audio-only file from a digital video source, choose Audio from the Capture menu in the Logging pane of the Capture panel.
"Premiere Pro does not support audio-only capture for some formats, such as HDV."
I'm shooting in HDV and if I want to capture audio only, would I just need to switch my setting to DV?
The only thing is my Canon HV20's HDV audio is MPEG-1 Audio Layer 2, 16 bit, 48 kHz.
My DV setting is PCM audio, which I think is a better quality format, right?
Would there be any noticeable difference?
    Thanks.

Capture your HDV material in the normal way and just drag audio only from the source monitor to the timeline.

  • "Lacie Rugged" for hdv capture?

Is the 160gb 5400 rpm buss powered drive good enough for basic hdv capture and editing?

I'm not a big fan of the larger 3.5" drive based Lacie units, as Shane already pointed out, they have a very poor record for reliabilty ....
... the "Rugged" however, one of their smaller 2.5" format drives, is an excellent little drive, very robust and in my own experience its very reliable. It will be more than adequate for HDV capture and editing.
Note: if you are not travelling regularly and do not need the added peace of mind of the big rubber bumper then there is little point in spending the extra money on this one, there are plenty of alternative drives that are equally reliable AND that have 7200rpm drives inside for that extra oomph when you want it.

  • Your Recommedations For Capturing With HDV To DVCPro HD

    Hi All,
I am about to start a new wedding project and I am using my LHe Kona for the first time to capture for output to a dvd. I want to know your best settings for capturing with LHe in FCP with my Z1 Sony? I will be capturing in 1080i and I would like to know which DVCPRO HD format to use with the best DVD end result. I have a totally new Caldigit Duo 500 GB raid as a scratch disk the can capture up to 140 mbs as most of you already know. Your help would be appreciated

If I'm not mistaken, you should be able to choose the Kona LH's "easy setup" for capturing DVCPROHD with the frame rate you've shot... then make HD or SD DVD's from the resulting sequence... Might have to change your device control to firewire, but it should work just fine.

  • Using and LCD TV as a monitor for HDV editing

I'm editing in FCP studio 2 and shooting with the new Sony HVR-S270u cameras. I'm trying to figure out the best way to use my LCD TV as a monitor for HD. I know FCP will not playback through my camera in HDV but print to tape with it. I looked into the Blackmagic Design Intensity Pro with HDMI. The problem is the camera doesn't have HDMI it SDI outputs so I'm capturing through firewire. I've been told that the Blackmagic card requires you to capture with it in order to playback with it. I know there is Matrox MXO but are there other options out there.
Can I use the LCD TV as a second monitor and do playback as Cinema Desktop Preview to second monitor? I've also seen a DVI - HDMI cable. Will that work? Any help would be great!
    Thanks,
    Mike

What format is the media in when you capture it?
Whatever you choose to capture it. You can capture it as HDV via firewire, or ProRes via firewire. Or you can use this card and choose one of the options it gives you...such as ProRes, DVCPRO HD, uncompressed HD...whatever you want, and your hardware can support.
I'm assuming it's no longer HDV.
Only if you don't capture it as HDV. You can still do that and then output via this card to some other format. Or you can capture as HDV, render to ProRes (in the sequence settings under RENDER CONTROL).
    Is it uncompressed HD?
    If you choose that.
Is there an Easy Setup for this?
    Yup.
    What codec does it use?
Whatever it lists in the Easy Setups...the ones I listed above.
They also state that you can use it for DV. I'm guessing that means if you have DV material and a device that outputs HDMI you have uncompressed SD?
First off, HDMI is an HD signal, not SD. BUT, you can use the card to output your DV timeline to your HDTV. You cannot output to an SD deck, as no SD decks have HDMI.
If you can import HDV via HDMI and you bypass the HDV codec and get full 1920 (as they say on their website)
Yup..you can capture as ProRes or Uncompressed, and get full 1080. BUT, this doesn't increase the resolution of your footage. It just means that it will render to a better codec with more color space...better manipulation of the image that HDV.
then I'm also guessing that you cannot go back to HDV.
Not via firewire. But if the deck had Component inputs, or HDMI...maybe.

  • Sequence settings for HDV 720p 24 fps

Okay, now that the French is gone I'm back on track, but still confused. I've captured my HDV 720p @ 24FPS footage using LumiereHD & it's separated & ready to go. What sequence settings/editing timebase should I use? I've noted people here saying DVCPro, but others said DVCPro is just problemic/not correct for HDV . . . and the Lumiere forum reccomends using the Apple Intermediate Codec, which I think people here said NOT to do . . . and there's a 720p24 option in Lumiere, but not in FCP . . . is it just like using 24p DV where you edit at regular 29.97? My head is turing into goo. Any sage advice, O sage ones? And I'm finishing on DVD, if that's usefull. Thank you!!!

Don't stay nervous for ever, you're missing out on a lot of good stuff.
    1. Repair Permissions.
    2. update to OS X 10.4.8

    3. update QuickTime to 7.1.3
    4. make sure you have Motion 2.1 already installed
    5. update all your pro apps with Software Update

    Still nervous?
I can't tell you what setting in FCP 5.1 to use, because I no longer have 5.1.
I would convert the HDV to DVC PRO HD 720p.
Editing in native HDV is a pain because of the frame structure.
You will end up with larger files with DVC PRO HD, but since it's all "I-frames" editing and compositing will be much, much faster.

  • Best editing card for HDV

what is the best editting card on PowerMac G5 that i can work either DV and HDV without lossing any quality especially in HDV
i getting a new PowerMac G5 & gonna use it for editting, i have DV & HDV camcorders , im trying not to loose quality for HDV when capturing
    Thank you

None, really. FCP 5 is meant to handle DV and HDV (and DVCPRO HD) over firewire with no loss of quality.
BUT...if you are talking the JVC and 720 24p...then you'll need a capture card. AJA LH or LHe, depending on the model of G5 you have.

  • Best Scheme For Capturing For Best MPE Performance?

So let's say I'm still capturing from MiniDV tape @ 720p24. What's the best scheme for capturing for best MPE performance? I have a new HP Z800 with (so far) one i7 4-core with 12 gigs of ram and an Nvidia GeForce GTX285.
    [moved from the FAQ forum]

You have to forgive me. I've been using Matrox RT.X2's for so long, I didn't realize there were no codec options when capturing from HDV tape, like there is with the RT.X2. So now I wonder how the MPE handles the playback of HDV captured footage.
I'm anxious to see what my new HP Z800 with one i7 quad core, 12 gigs of ram and Nvidia GeForce GTX 285 can do with PPro CS5. I got it two months ago and haven't even turned it on, waiting for CS5.

  • FCP quit after capture in HDV

    Hello
I want to capture in HDV1080i50 and I have all settings correct but the application Final Cut quits after the capture. Any advice ? Thank you !

It sounds like you have your camera set for down converting to DV. What camera/deck is it?
If it is a Sony try this, turn off the camera, disconnect the FW cable, turn on the camera in VTR mode, open the menu to Rec In/Out, find i-link conv and set to OFF for HDV (or ON for DV), then back out of the menu and turn off the camera and connect the FW cable, and turn it back on. By turning off the camera it will insure safe FW connections so there is not possibility of shorting this port.

  • Firestore vs. Citidisk for HDV - is it true DTE?

I'm very curious about purchasing a Firestore or Citidisk external drive for HDV recording. They both claim to be Direct-To-Edit technology, but I'm concerned about having to transcode the footage from a .m2t file (I'm not sure what kind of file this is) to edit in Final Cut, thus negating the time the device is supposed to save. Basically, I haven't been able to find any posts from consumers who have either of these drives, are using them to record HDV, and can immediately edit with them in FCP 5. Is it possible? I'm assuming the device would have to record a native Quicktime HDV file. Am I wrong about that?
I'm shooting with a Sony FX1, and am also curious which drive is better. Citidisk seems the much better deal, but I've heard the quality of the device is questionable. Any thoughts? Any advice from people who are recording HDV projects with these boxes?

I hate google. I love google.

    http://www.eventdv.net/Articles/ReadArticle.aspx?CategoryID=50&ArticleID=11291
In addition, the CitiDISK also properly handles parallel recording on both the tape and the hard drive at the same time. Many camcorders now feature the ability to control external recorders, including decks and hard drive units like the CitiDISK. The CitiDISK started and stopped each time I hit the Record button on my FX1. Every time I switched from DV to HDV on the camcorder, the CitiDISK's lights would flash and blink and eventually the power would shine a steady green. The transition time varies in proportion to the amount of hard drive space the unit has. I am told the 120GB models take about 15 seconds. There has been some discussion online about whether the CitiDISK can play back HDV clips to a connected camcorder. My unit could not. It could only play back DV clips via QPlay. While not as capable as the FireStore FS-4 Pro HDV, and lacking the interactive data screen, the CitiDISK HDV 100GB is currently about $700 cheaper than an 80GB FS-4 Pro HDV model.Because the CitiDISK uses the FAT32 filesystem that enables cross-platform connectivity, the video is automatically chopped up into 988.5MB files that are about four-and-a-half minutes long (the FireStore models use the same system but allow 2GB filesizes of 10 minutes of 25Mbps DV or 1080i HD2; you'll get a couple more minutes from 19Gbps 720p HD1).
This file-chopping necessity results in a plethora of numerically sequential names that are created automatically. There is no "pre-naming" in case you need to shoot multiple projects on the same drive. You will work with CLIP0106, CLIP0107, etc. It will change to the next hundredth digit (0201, 0301, etc.) on its own and not based on any natural turnover, camera action, or time of day that I can discern. In the end, though, the clips are sequential, and a drag-and-drop into the timeline should order them properly from beginning to end.Another curious situation arises when dragging all the clips into an FCP bin. They all appear as clips that have lost their link with the source files. Selecting them all and then relinking them takes a few seconds. It doesn't happen if I use the menu to "import" the folder of clips—only when I drag all of them together from the Finder.
I do have an issue with the clips acquired on the CitiDISK. I set it to record MOV files for FCP, but the files recorded appear with 16-bit, 38Kbps audio as opposed to the 16-bit, 48Kbps audio that they should have. FCP can play a single layer of these, transcoding the audio on the fly, but it is not able to mix multiple layers of stereo audio on the fly as it can with 16-bit, 48Kbps audio.<

Why use tape if this disk takes care of everything for you? Connectors are a tricky thing and I’ve found during tests of this and other HDD recorders that if the connection is lost, so is the video. Best to have a back up than nothing at all. If the connection to the camera (or computer) is lost, all three of the lights on the front of the CitiDISK will flash to let you know there is a problem. If you want to risk it, you can manually start and stop the record process.
The CitiDISK captures in Raw DV, Windows AVI2, QuickTime MOV, and M2T for all HDV footage at a sustained 12MB/second. While having the M2T is great, Final Cut Pro does not natively recognize the format. You will have to use a conversion utility to do that. Not a big deal, but it does increase workflow time.
Because the CitiDISK is compatible with Windows and Mac, the drive is formatted as FAT32, which means files will have a 2GB size limit. If you record over the size limit, CitiDISK HDV will automatically create a new clip sequentially numbered.
To do a quick check of the video captured, CitiDISK HDV has a Quick Play function. By switching the camera to VCR mode and pressing QPlay users can spot check their work with ease.
But don’t be fooled, the CitiDISK HDV drive is a barebones system. There are no transport controls during Quick Play. There is also no way to tell exactly how much time remains on the drive. Instead the system resorts to changing the color of an indicator light. While it is helpful, when the light turns red, the user still has no way of knowing if there is 20 minutes or 5 minutes remaining.
This lack of control feedback is the biggest disappointment for me. It is really difficult to remember all of the button combos that need to be pressed to get certain desired results. Also when first starting the system, all of the lights blink randomly for about 15 seconds. For a new user, this could cause them to think there is something seriously wrong with the unit. Unfortunately the manual, while thin, is too wide to slip into the belt-clip case, so the best bet for users is to take the Ron Popeil approach and set it and forget it.
I also ran into a problem during my testing that my Mac failed to recognize the captured files on the drive. The PC found the clips without a problem. I could transfer the files to my PC then network to my Mac. I ended up having to reformat the drive using Shining Technology CD that came with the unit and all was well.
Even with the capacity to record nearly 8 hours of footage, the enclosed rechargeable battery will only last about 90 minutes, which makes it pretty short for most long form events.<

  • Most compatible format for HDV export to dvd

    Hi
I just got a new HDV camera (canon XH-A1) and have shot a project in HDV. I am now mastering it to dvd (using IDvd) and need to know the best format to use for compatibility across tv's (ie SD and widescreen)
I captured as HDV, made a DV PAL sequence. I have found on a friend's SD tv, the footage is clipped, not showing edges, eg the titles (even though in title safe area) and on a friends HDV TV, all the footage appears, the looks stretched?
What is the best format to export my HDV footage, so it is compatible with the widest number of tvs (ie HD ready and older SD tv's)?
    regards
    Mark

iDVD is not the ideal tool to be doing this with, DVD Studio Pro is better equipped to deal with it, however, if you want to use iDVD, you have to use a more recent version that knows how to handle wide screen (it involves setting a flag so the DVD player knows to letterbox or display widescreen depending on the capability of the tv).
You also need to tell either iDVD or DVDSP that the material is anamorphic widescreen 16:9 material...
