Capturing Without Timecode

Frustratingly, after a long project taking up five tapes, two of my tapes are not registering a timecode when they are played back. Playing them and pressing "Capture Now" simply results in FCP sitting there "Waiting for timecode". Is there a way I can trick it into capturing what is being previewed without the use of a timecode?
(And if you're a timecode expert... why did my last tape suffer 146 timecode breaks in one hour?)

oooookay, well, I tried your suggestion, and Eureka!... it wasn't the timecode that was breaking, regardless of what it was saying. It was the pulldown cadence that was apparently somehow corrupted. When I captured with regular DV NTSC without the advanced pulldown, it captured the whole thing in one take. Then I did what you said, and chose the "remove pulldown" option from the Tools menu. Well, it blinked for a second, got about a 5th of the way on the progress bar and quickly announced there was a break in the pulldown cadence, so, mystery solved. Unfortunately FCP's remove pulldown wasn't robust enough to handle it, but fortunately I'm a plug-in fiend, and Nattress's G Remove Pulldown did the trick after some experimenting with the settings. Funny thing is, I've never once had this problem the whole time I've been shooting and capturing with the DVX, so I have to figure maybe the tape itself was degrading. It's always been able to remove the pulldown as it captures, but obviously not with this tape, as a 2nd tape I used that same night captured fine with pulldown enabled on the capture. Anyways, I can't thank you enough Meg, for pointing me in the right direction, and I only wish I could give you credit for answering my question, but since I kind of hijacked this thread, I can only hope someone at Apple reads this and gives credit where credit is due. The forums here rock, they've always been able to solve any problem I have, and this has been no exception, thanks a million!

  • Can I capture without timecode?

    Hello,
I am attempting to capture Hi8 tapes. The Hi8 camera is connected to the analog inputs of a Sony DSR-11 firewire input device. I am using Firewire NTSC Basic.
I can preview the video in the Log and Capture window just fine. When choosing 'Capture Now' it waits for timecode. Is there a way to over ride the need for timecode when capturing? I can record this way in iMovie with the same hardware setup.
    Thanks for any advice!

    Sure!
Change your capture presets to Uncontrollable Device. Then just play the Hi8 machine, and use Capture Now.

  • Log and Capturing without Timecode?

I want to play video from my television, to my camera, to my computer. I see the video on the computer screen but when i try to log andcapture it is looking for timecode and there is none. how can one capture this footage?
    thanks!!!

Since the video feed contains no timecode, in FCE's capture settings, you must select "DV Convert" and then use Capture Now.

  • Capture without timecode

    Hi.
I'm transfering VHS tapes into Final Cut Pro. Until now I've been putting every single one into a DV tape and then capture it into Final Cut.
Is there a way to skip the DV tape prosess? I tried, but there was an error because there was no timecode.

    Final Cut Express wrote:
Well, every time I choose this option it still waits for the time code and I'm not able to capture. When I return to capture options "DV-NTSC" is marked as active. So it looks like I can't switch to "non-controllable".
Well, that's not what you asked in your first post. Using a preset is quite different from unlocking it.
But I have never used Final Cut Express. You might try that forum where Tom Wolsky and some other wonks may have an answer for you.

  • Capturing HDV without Timecode

I am using a JVC HD110 U capturing in HDV at 720p 24. For some reason, even though the timecodes are consecutive, Final Cut Studio is registering timecode breaks. Some of these are on cuts, but others are in the middle of takes.
I know that if it were DV I could set the device to non-controllable and capture without timecode, but in HDV it won't let me set the device control to non-controllable.
Is there anyway that I can capture HDV and ignore the time code on the tape?
    Thanks much,
    J. Cameron Brueckner

Depending on that setting I either get the capture to stop in the middle or it continues and create a new clip. If I let it run, I loose a few seconds in the middle of the take. If I set the preroll to 1 sec, I can get the lost time down to 3 sec, but since it happens in the middle of takes not just at cuts, it is still a problem that I am loosing 3 seconds (2 while it searches for media and 1 for preroll).
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks much.

  • Can someone capture a timecode DAT for me in the CT-area?

I didn't have any luck obtaining a timecode DAT. I was wondering if someone in the CT-area could capture a timecode DAT for me, in FCP, and place the audio in a timeline utilizing the DAT's timecode. Pretty simply and I would be much appreciative.

I've got a place in Stamford that I think can do this for you.

could it be the case to not have the cursor on the screenshot?

  • Capturing footage without timecodes

I love editing with Final Cut Express, but capturing footage is a nightmare. The program keeps trying to locate timecode breaks on my Hi8 tape during capture, which results in me losing three to four seconds of footage from the beginning of each scene.
Is there a way to tell FCE to disregard timecodes? When I capture family movies, I'd like the importing to be as seamless as possible -- much like when capturing in iMovie. (I do know that I can capture in iMovie and edit in FCE, but if it's possible, I'd like to do all my work in FCE without relying on iMovie.)
Thanks to anyone who can help!

Thank you both very much for your quick replies! I tried switching my Easy Setup as suggested, and now my capturing seems to be working smoothly. Awesome!
Thanks so much again -- I really appreciate it!

  • Capturing from HI8 through HV20 - does it work without timecode?

I am capturing material from a Hi8 camera. I have connected it with my Mac through the Canon HV20.
I can see the material in the Log and capture window in my FCP 6.0.2, but when I choos capture now.
FcP wants to locate the timecode, which does not exist.
My question is. Is there a way I can capture my analog material, without first having to record it on DV tapes.
    Cheers
    /David

if original timecode is not important to you then you can bypass the device control altogether and hence the error with it :
in the *Log and Capture* window click on the *Capture Settings* tab at upper right and change the *Device Control* setting to *Non-Controllable Device*
press play on the Hi8 deck and then hit *Capture Now* in FCP

  • Capturing without tape?

Ok I've got a live TV feeding into Sony DV machine (via BNC) hooked up via Firewire to computer. Image is perfect on the DV machine preview monitor. If I go to iMovie 08 and import all works fine, I can capture live footage without tape.
Try to do the same in FCE as this is my preferred editing s/w - when I go to capture I can preview the live feed but when choose capture now all I get is black screen with note about device needing to be in VTR mode. Any ideas? I'm assuming there must be an option on FCE somewhere to tell it to ignore VTR/timecode input - as it works fine in iMovie.
    Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks for prompt reply. The Sony unit is HVR-M25AE if that helps.
Where do I find the DV Converter? Still fairly new to FCE...
    Thanks

  • Excise Invoice of Captured without PO can't be canceled with J1IEX

    Dear all,
I entered the EWPO(Excise Invoice Without PO) from J1IEX transaction with processing mode "A01 Capture Excise
Invoice" and reference document "R06 Without Purchase Order".
But when I cancel it from same transaction, the error below has occurred.
"Excise invoice xxx has already been posted for vendor XXX."
And I couldn't cancel it from J1IS or J1IH transaction, too.
Do you know how to cancel it?
When I asked it to OSS, their answer was as following.
Answer of person in charge 1.
You have to reverse Part 2 with J1IH transaction, and cancel Part 1 with J1I5 transaction.
    ->(My confirmation result)
But on the EWPO screen, there are no fields to input the material document number.
        So I couldn't cancel Part 1 portion from J1I5.
Answer of person in charge 2.  (escalated from person 1)
You can continue the cancellation from J1IEX with pressing enter key, ignore a message.
    ->(My confirmation result)
As that operation result, Excise Invoice "0000000000" was created with status "B" separately.
But ,, when a new posted EWPO was canceled, the Invoice "0000000000" described above was overwritten.
This method was not able to be used.
Answer of person in charge 3.  (escalated from person 2)
You always have to register a Excise invoice from MIGO transaction.
If you want to receive goods without PO, you can use movement type 501.
And if you register a Excise invoice from J1IEX directly, you can't cancel the EI Part 1.
There are only two ways to cancel the part1
    1. By cancelling the material document.
    2. By using the J1I5 transaction
The material document is necessary in each case.
The current EWPO function of direct J1IEX is useless.
    ->(My confirmation result,,,)
So, what is the EWPO function of below?
"J1IEX transaction with processing mode "A01 Capture Excise Invoice" and reference document "R06 Without Purchase Order"
    Best regards,
    Iwana

    Dear Padmasri  ,
    Thank you for your reply.
But,,, as you wrote, that is normal case with PO and GR.
I know that normal process well.
I'm asking about EWPO(Excise Invoice Without PO) case.
As I wrote, EWPO is registered directly from a J1IEX transaction.
(with processing mode "A01 Capture ExciseInvoice" and reference document "R06 Without Purchase Order")
The above-mentioned error occurs the Post mode of J1IEX, or Cancel mode, and cancellation of the Excise Invoice is impossible.
And, since there is no field to input material document number on the screen of J1IEX in that case, a link is not made even GR has posted.
We would like to apply this EWPO to the material which does not manage stocks.
(We would like to deal with only the payment of the expense to a vendor, and the payment of Excise.)
    Best regards,
    Iwana

  • Footage captured without audio

I'm hoping someone might be able to enlighten me with possible causes of the following issue.
I've been capturing Digi Beta via Kona LH onto an internal drive (not the system drive) as Apple Pro Res HQ PAL. Even thought 2 stereo tracks have been captured, there is no audio on them, but there is audio on the tape.
The same computer has captured to an external FW800 drive without any issues using the same capture settings, also the same since when capturing direct to Fibre optic SAN. Unfortunately due to a crashing problem, I've clean installed Final Cut on the system again so I can't trace much info.
Any thoughts or advice on would could have occurred would be appreciated.
Specs- Intel Quad Core Mac Pro OSX 10.5.8, running Final Cut Pro 6.0.4.

What is your video connection from DigiBeta to the Kona?
    SDI or Component?
What is your audio connection from DigiBeta to the Kona?
AES/EBU or Analog or are trying to embed it in the SDI?
Check you AJA control panel to verify where it thinks the audio should come from.
If the source is embedded audio in SDI, make sure the deck is set to send out audio on the SDI cable.
If you did capture audio, you should see levels bouncing on your FCP audio level meter and make sure they show a waveform in the viewer window.

  • Multi-camera capture with timecode

I recently directed a 4 camera shoot with all cameras sync'd using timecode. I intend to edit the final product using Final Cut Studio 2. However, for now I only have iMovie and Final Cut Express HD. Is it possible to capture this project with timecode in iMovie and import it to Final Cut Studio with timecode so all cameras lock to time? If so, what is the most practical process? Or should I wait until I can obtain Final Cut Studio 2 to capture? Thanks in advance!
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

welcome Tony to the  boards ...
'multi-track captures editing' is one of the advantages of FCP, compared to its lil' brother FCE.. and iM, anyhow...
and, iM has a very different media file handling, ...
wait, 'til FCP is on your drive..

  • Failed Batch Capture - Broken Timecode

    Hello,
I'm attempting to capture some old footage from a project I had done in Premiere about a year ago.
There is clip in particular I'm trying to capture where the timecode was broken - premiere attempts to capture the first 8 minutes of my clip and then stops and gives me an error stating that the timecode was broken.
Is there anyway to force premiere to capture this clip all the way through and ignore the broken timecode point?
It's not a big deal to capture the clip "manually" but the problem is that I had split up and edited this clip so much, I'd rather batch capture it so that it will automatically appear on my sequence and I won't have to re-edit the whole thing.
    Thanks!
    FOO

I also have a Canopus card (in a system with Premiere 6.5) and broken timecode ("timecode hell" as I call it) was really only an issue when the tape pre-rolled over the break point during batch capture.
Do you still have the old Canopus .avi? You could use their util for CDVC <-> DVSD conversions:

  • Capturing and Timecode Help

    Hi,
We're capturing DV tapes from a deck using a firewire cable to our Macbook and a USB cable to our external drive for the scratch disk.
We're having trouble capturing - trying to capture each entire tape - but after short varied times with each tape, usually about a minute, the capturing stops with FCP saying it's locating a timecode break. Problem is that it never locates it and the timecode breaks are in the middle of shots, not in shooting breaks when the camera was turned off.
Any ideas? Thank you for your help.

That might be part of the problem. But, that aside, we can actually capture the material reliably if, under the capture settings we tell FCP to warn about any timecode breaks AFTER capturing instead of during or making a new clip.
That might be the WHOLE problem. The fact that you can capture if you turn the warning off only means FCP is not going to tell you you've had breaks until capture is done. And as Loyed has said, TC is very important if you ever need to recapture the footage.
Although some get away with capturing via USB, it is not recommended and this is one of the problems you would expect to see as a result.
