Multi-camera capture with timecode

I recently directed a 4 camera shoot with all cameras sync'd using timecode. I intend to edit the final product using Final Cut Studio 2. However, for now I only have iMovie and Final Cut Express HD. Is it possible to capture this project with timecode in iMovie and import it to Final Cut Studio with timecode so all cameras lock to time? If so, what is the most practical process? Or should I wait until I can obtain Final Cut Studio 2 to capture? Thanks in advance!

welcome Tony to the  boards ...
'multi-track captures editing' is one of the advantages of FCP, compared to its lil' brother FCE.. and iM, anyhow...
and, iM has a very different media file handling, ...
wait, 'til FCP is on your drive..

  • Multi Camera Editing with Matrox CODEC ( VS4 ) Card

    Hello All.
    Setup
I am recording 4 inputs from the Matrox VS4 via Wirecast 4.2 and also tried 5.0
    - 1080i @ 100Mbps
    - All the video footage play perfectly with no problems what so ever
    - I Have installed the Matrox VFW Software Codecs of a system which DOES NOT have the VS4 card
    - I can edit 1 video with NO PROBLEM.
    Problem
    - Using Adobe Premiere 7.1 CC with multi camera editing, the footage is jittery after a few seconds.
    - Using Adobe Premiere CS 6.0 with multi camera editing, the footage is jittery after a few seconds.
    - I have tried with 2 cameras up to 4 cameras and I get the same problem.#
    Other Test
    - I have tried 12 x videos which are MP4 in multi camera editing with NO PROBLEMS!!!
    - I am using 4 x 128GB SSD in RAID 0 ( 1450 MB/s) - Through put is not an issue.
    - I have also reduced the MB/s on the ISO capture of 50MB/s
This is the CODEC you need to have installed on your computer in order to edit the view/edit the videos recorded by the Matrox VS4:
    http://www.matrox.com/video/en/support/windows/vfw_software_codecs/downloads/softwares/ver sion1.0/
The Matrox Video for Windows (VFW) software codecs let you render and play back Matrox .avi files in your VFW programs without having Matrox video hardware installed. This version provides codecs that were previously available only on systems that have particular Matrox video hardware, such as Matrox Axio. This includes the Matrox DVCPRO HD codec, and "+ Alpha" versions of the Matrox uncompressed and MPEG-2 I-frame codecs. As well, the Matrox VFW MPEG-2 I-frame HD codec now lets you render and play back Matrox MPEG-2 I-frame .avi files in all HD formats (720p, 1440x1080i/p, and full-size 1080i/p).
The following VFW software codecs are provided for use on 32-bit and 64-bit Windows operating systems:
    Matrox DV/DVCAM
    Matrox DVCPRO
    Matrox DVCPRO50
    Matrox DVCPRO HD
Matrox MPEG-2 I-frame in SD and HD resolutions, with or without alpha
Matrox Uncompressed in SD and HD resolutions, with or without alpha
    Matrox Offline HD
Matrox M-JPEG and HDV (playback only)
Is this an issue that is present the Premier 7.1 CC or the CODEC or even both?
    Thank you all.

  • Rapid Tapeless Multi-camera workflow with OnLocation

I am wondering whether anyone is using OnLocation for rapid (read almost instant) tapeless workflow.
What I would like to do is:
1 - Use 4 Sony V1U HDV cameras and ISO record all of them as HDV files.
2 - Record the ISO on four separate laptops running OnLocation via a Firewire feed from each camera.
3 - Store the clips (as they are being recorded) onto four external eSATA drives (one for each camera/laptop combo)
4 - After 90 minute recording is complete, move the four external eSATA drives to a central workstation running CS4 and equipped with 4 eSATA ports.
5 - Then WITHOUT copying the files from the external drives, immediately start editing a multi-cam session.
    Can I do this?
    Are there any "gotcha's?"
What kind of of pre-processing of the clips is necessary if any?  (audio or video "conforming"?)
Does timecode stay with the files?
How long after I mount the drives might I be ready to start editing?  1 minute?  5 minutes 1 hour or more?
I need to do a FAST turnaround, but cannot do a live switch.......
    Thanks!
    Mike Fayette

That actually sounds pretty cool. The only question I'd maybe ask is what is cheaper: 4 laptops with onlocation, or 4 solid state recording devices for your cameras (like Convergent's little one which records from the HD-SDI port of the camera)?
If you need the functionality of OL, like scopes and what not, then sure it sounds like it's the way to go. Just sayin there may be alternatives?

But I saw a handful of others along this line at NAB last year.

  • What is best practice for multi camera edit with differing lengths?

I have three cameras that took video of an engagement party. Camera A and B took it all (with some early extra material exclusive to each camera). Camera C took some, then stopped, then took more.
So I have four sets of clips - A and B which are complete, then C then D.
Should I create sequence 1 with A, B and C synchonised, then create sequence 2 with A, B and D synchronised, then sequence 3 with sundry early non-multi camera clips, plus sequence 1 plus sequence 2 then late non-multi camera clips?
Or can I synchronise A, B and C, then on the same timeline synchronise A, B and D? I'm concerned that the second synchronisation will put C out of sync.
What is the best way to approach this?
    Thanks in advance.

A and B which are complete, then C then D.
I think you're looking at this in the wrong way.  You have only three cameras, A, B and C, but you don't really have a D camera, as those are just other clips from camera C.  You might call them C1 and C2 if you like, but calling them D seems to be confusing the issue, as it's still only three cameras, and three shots to choose from when cutting the sequence.  (Except for the gap between C clips, where you will have only the A and B shots to choose.)
You can absolutely sync all the clips form camera C on the same sequence as A and B.  And it will probably be easier to do so.

  • Multi-camera audio with multiple tracks

In Premier Pro 2 I was somehow able to use the automation features to adjust levels throughout my videos on multiple tracks, and that mix would flow through to the multi-camera sequence.
It didn't work in Premier Pro 3.1.1 when I just tried it. I then noticed that the help file says "In order to retain audio from more than one track simultaneously, mix all the desired tracks to a single track in the source sequence, select the resulting audio track, and deselect the Audio Follows Video option."
I opened my old projects in 3.1.1 and the multiple tracks still play in the multi-camera sequence.
1: How was I able to do this before and can I still do it?
2: If I must mix all tracks to a single track in the source sequence, how do I do that? I can't figure that out.

You have two choices, either you can hear the audio for the selected camera, or just audio track 1. You can't hear all audio tracks simultaneously without a little tweaking.
Once you're done with the multicam cut, place another instance in the new sequence on tracks 2. Then delete the video from track 2, and move the audio from track 2 onto track 1. This will allow all audio tracks from the original sequence to be heard.

  • Capturing with Timecode Breaks Plase Help!!

I am trying to capture different clips in the footage i have on my camcorder but there are timecode breaks. I am not sure how to get the clips i need because everytime i enter the in and out points and then press capture clip it doesnt work just rewinds my camcorder and wont capture. If anyone could tell me how to fix this it would be much appreciated.
    thanks,
    Hunter

    Jennifer
Are the breaks on the tape or is FCE reporting the breaks?
Which capture style are you using, NOW or CLIP?
Have you tried different places on the tape other than the start?
You need at least 3 seconds pre-roll from the start.

  • Help with multi camera editing in Premiere Pro

Ok I'm new...so bear with me.
I am editing a basic interview shot on two cameras and cutting away to some still images.
The rushes are 4 lots of film about 10 mins in length.
I inputted the footage from the two cameras and created a new sequence for each using the multi camera audio synchronisation method (which worked great).
So how do I go about creating my edit? Something tells me I'm going about it in the wrong way.
Do I need to create my edit using single camera shots and then create multi camera sequences for each individual clip? It seems so laborious as its all already synced up for two cameras.
I am a bit confused about creating clips v creating sequences.
I'm sorry if this is making some of you cringe :/ ....but I really can't find any help in online tutorials.
I need basic step by step instruction.

humm, sounds like your 4 lots do not overlap in time, and that there is space between each lot. So would that be 4 multi-camera sequences with the two cameras?
If so, why even multicamera edit that? and just set up to Video tracks, sync the audio and opacity keyframe between the two tracks.
Good to get your multi-camera edit workflow going proper though.
Sounds like you need to multi-camera edit your 4 sequences separately, unless you sync each lot with its corresponding clip and put on the same timeline, then do one sequence and one multi-camera edit

  • Multi Cam. Multi Track Sync

Hey everyone, I'm hoping there is some super genius on here that can help me
Every now and then I do a multi-cam even with multiple tracks of audio. It's going to become more frequent so I want to streamline my work flow.
At current I record all my audio tracks into logic, and sync my cameras via LTC... so there is no audio-video sync. I just manually sync audio and video in final cut after I've polished the audio in logic.
How does my work flow need to work to make this happen ?
If I purchased something like this to convert the LTC to Word clock.. can I just feed this into my audio interface.. and logic can use that as clock ?
    http://www.primalgear.com/rosendahlclock003.html
The next interface I'm looking at buying does have Word clock in.. but my current one doesn't.. can I buy a separate interface for this ? or is there another way of doing it ?...
Someone told me I can just record the LTC SMPTE to an audio channel and final cut can sync to that ?
..Oh god.. I am confused.. to many "maybe I should do it like this.."
Anyone have a tried and tested approach ?
    cheers
    Alex
    the setup
    4X Canon XLH1's
    1 Mackie Onyx 16.4 with FW card (16 pre's)
    Mac book pro.
and my next interface will be
a RME Micstacy over MADI (bigggg step up)

I record all my audio tracks into logic, and sync my cameras via LTC...
Why don't you just do a rough edit in FCP, export it, load the movie into Logic,
and record your audio tracks to picture? In Logic, you could even set the "Project
Settings : Synchronization : Bar position__plays at SMPTE__" to be your starting LTC.
When you're done with your audio, you can lay it back to the video in FCP using
the timecode relationship you established at the beginning.

  • Controlling IMAQ camera capture via DAQmx operation

    Dear all,
I am working with a PCIe-1427 board connected via link to a camera (SUI Goodrich) and am also using a PCI-6731 board to which I have attached an M-series SCC-68 connector block.
I have been successful in writing code for controlling .avi capture from the camera and writing separate code to control the switching of an optical switch connected to the SCC-68.
The two lines of the optical switch relay differing information and I wish to alternately introduce this information to the camera for analysis.  Ideally I wish to trigger the acquisition of the camera capture with the optical switching such that each frame contains information of a single channel only but I have been unsuccessful as yet in the integration of the counter DAQmx operation with the IMAQ camera code.
Is this possible?  I see from 1 previous post that through the use of an RTSI cable I can connect the two devices together (or alternately use the DAQmx to output a trigger on the digital lines).  Can anyone suggest information or an example on how to route signals from DAQmx via RTSI to IMAQ?  Also is there anything that I should be looking out for with regards the pulse generation to the switch which allows the signals to be passed via RTSI?
I find that by running my camera and counter code in the same vi both will work (obviously not in sync) - if I connect the RTSI and select camera settings to accept RTSI triggers, should this be a simple solution?
I would greatly appreciate any insights you would have; my time is running out very quickly and is really distressing.
    Kindest regards and thanks,
    Miika

    Hi sachsm,
    Thanks for your reply.
I am unsure what you refer to by 'routed to PXI Trig0' - can you please elaborate.  I have my RTSI cable configures in MAX and I am using IMAQ Configure Trigger3.vi with the trigger set to 2 so that when the assertion edge of a trigger is received, the buffer list is acquired.
Please see my code below.  Should I adjust my trigger settings in MAX? It's currently set to internal.
    Kind regards,
    Miika

  • Multi camera audio synk

I have made a multi cam sequense with 4 cams + two separate audio tracks. (One with speech, one with man playing an instrument)
It all works fine until I began to adjust some levels in one of the the audio tracks. Then that sound went out of synk. Anyone knows why? Same thing happened when I used slip- or slide tool in the video track. (Nested multicam sequence)

What is the output format of your original video ? And did you try to convert them into another format then load into your Adobe?

  • Multi cam sequence - how to take audio from multiple tracks?

I have a multi cam sequence with multiple audio sources (cameras plus separate audio tracks).
According to this page, in order to have multiple audio sources, I need to mix them into a track in the source sequence:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/PremierePro/4.0/WSADF1BC06-B8FB-4f23-8446-8D8F8539D7BD.html
So I mixed several tracks into submix 1. But when I use the multi cam monitor, submix 1 is not available as an audio source.
Is it perhaps possible to mix audio into a non submix track? If so, how?
    premiere cs4

Multicam can only use audio 1, or audio follows video (you hear whichever track you see).  There's no way to hear more than one track at a time.

  • Premiere becomes completely unresponsive during multi-cam preview

While editing a 5 camera multi-cam project, Premiere completely locks me out during playback of the project.  It's like my user interface just completely died.  The project plays and nothing I do will stop it.  Autosaves do not occur and I am forced to wait an hour for the whole timeline to play (haven't waited to see if I get control even after then) or 'end task' to kill the Premiere application, thus losing all my work up until the last save.  I have had moments where Premiere locked my out for a few seconds, but I always managed to eventually get control.  The last 2 times I never got control back.
I'm running the latest version of Premiere CC on Windows 8.1.
Any help in how to interrupt Premiere's coma in this situation would be greatly appreciated.  Really sucks doing the same work 3+ times over.
    Michael

    i3770k 16gb RAM.... I don't think that's the problem.
I called Adobe Tech Support and they located the problem.  I had the wrong sequence settings, which had the wrong preview format (codec).  Apparently, the best way to create a sequence with a multi-cam track is to right-click on the multi-cam clip and select 'create sequence".  This way Premiere chooses the optimal preview format for the video clip types it contains.  And this is the only way to get Premiere to optimally handle multi-cam clips with various different video formats properly, such as mine.
I don't understand why one even has to worry about this sort of thing.  Why shouldn't Premiere ALWAYS choose the optimal playback format?  Coming from other editors I always found it really weird in Premiere that I had to select a sequence preset that was related to the video format I was editing.  For one thing, many projects have mixed format types so this system that Premiere employs seems flawed and outdated.
Anyways, eventhough Premiere still drops a few frames during playback of my five 1080p streams, I can now edit and watch the multi-cam preview without fear of being completely locked out and losing control of Premiere.

  • Multi cam shoot using  P2 cards. How to move clis to timecode positions

multi cam shoot using P2 cards. How to move clis to timecode positions. We were using free TC. I want to a large # of clips from both cams. and have them move to the correct TC position on the timline. In Nuendo eith audio u hit apple a or ctrl a right click move to orgin. Avid will take care of it for u. FCP???

If you read the "Apple Pro Training Sereis; Final Cut Pro 5" book, it's very easy. You can sync the clips manually by setting In or Out points, specifying TC, or using one of the two Aux TC fields. Since this is the first, and most basic step in doing Multiclip editing, I'd suggest you get the book, or read the appropriate section of the User Manual. I don't think anyone wants to post a full "how to" article in a forum.
It can be done, you're clips have to all have been recorded with synced TC, or they simply won't sync up in any NLE. Read the book. Cause even if I did have the time to explain FCP's Multiclip editing in this forum, you'd still have questions that are in the book.
If you actually walk through the first steps of building a Multiclip to edit, it's blatatnly obvious in the first step. I'd give it a try first.
Problem is the DVCPRO-HD codec is going to require a higher end Mac with tons of RAM and either RAID, or internal drives to do a DVCPRO-HD Multiclip, as DVCPRO-HD (P2) is a pretty high bandwidth codec. I use it daily, I know, it takes horsepower to do.

  • Massive problems with nested multi-cam sequences

    Hey all,
I'm absolutely pulling my hair out over some issues I'm having and hope somebody out there might have an answer.  I'm creating a short interview project, including interviews of two people individually, with two separate cameras and external sound capture.  My goal is to cut between their separate answers to each question.  For each interview I created a multi-cam sequence within its own timeline.  Then, in my master sequence, I used the source monitor to pull out the specific clips from each interview sequence which I wanted to include, and assembled them into the master timeline.
I'm having two difficulties.  First, for whatever reason, I'm experiencing audio glitching when the cuts between sequence clips occur.  The glitch is like an audio "scramble," lasts about a half second, plenty of time to be distracting and detract from the whole of the project.  There are no such audio glitches present when viewing the interview sequences specifically.  I had applied effects to the audio tracks both within the interview sequences and the master sequence.  I've since disabled every effect but the problem persists, and it is still present upon rendering the master timeline.  I have absolutely no idea what to do about this.
The second issue is more general.  I've got my media cache on an internal SSD, and I'm pulling my media from an internal HDD, with Premiere Installed on a different SSD with my operating system.  The two interview sequences play back wonderfully, no delays whatsoever.  The master timeline, however, with all the clips extracted from the interview sequences, plays slow as molasses.  It takes 10-15 seconds for the play head to even start moving once I click 'play', which has made this entire process excruciatingly difficult.  Is this a known issue?  Why would my performance be so completely degraded working with nested sequences?  Isn't everything referencing the exact same files?
Ugh, long night working on this.  Thank you for any help.

Well, I've come up with a terrible, but comical solution for the second issue which doesn't involve reworking anything.  It turns out that, upon launching premiere, I can play the master sequence with nested multi-cam sequences a grand total of ONCE with minimal delay.  If I stop the play through, then it will take 3-4 minutes to get the sequence playing again.  Of course, the Premiere decides to hang when I try to close it after playing this master timeline, so I'm finding that I can inch my way through this project by (1) launching premiere, (2) playing the master sequence, (3) make the edits I need, (4) forcibly crash Premiere, and (5) relaunch Premiere and repeat.  It's a terrible way to work, but the project is so close to completion that I'm willing to suffer through it.
As to issue 1, I've taken each offending clip, extending the audio track one or two frames in the beginning of each clip, and then use those frames to ramp the volume up from silent to 0db.  This seems to avoid the brief moment of distortion at the beginning.  Notably I did try your suggestion by going back to the original, source audio, but I was still getting the same issue.  My work-around is the only solution I've been able to come up with.
