Cascading routers

Here's my situation if anyone can help
Router 1 is a cable modem/wireless router Linksys WCG 200 CC. It has 2 problems:
1. Limited wireless coverage due to location (no it can't be moved)
2. It is limited to 5 IP addresses.
3. subnet mask is fixed.
The shared printer is connected to the one computer hard wired to that router.
Router 2 is a Linksys WRT54GS router located on another floor of the house (and 75' of network cable away).
So what I want to do if possible is:
1. be able to print network wide (I know this is possible but how?)
2. Be able to share files network wide.
3. Not be limited in the # of available IP addresses, which I currently am not as long as connected to router 2.
I'd love to have all 3 choices, will be satisfied with choices 1 and 3 but must have choice 3 not matter what, or having the second router is pointless.

Somebody needs to edit this thread. It's pretty messed up. Too lengthy web link... anyway, I agree with the sensus that the ipconfig results in no way at all lists the limit of 5 IP addresses...

  • Opening ports on cascading routers

hello everyone this is my first time here so hopefully I'll post up all the info you need the first time. I have 2 wrt54g routers cascading off of each other. The first wrt54g(#1) is connected directly to my cable modem the wrt54g(#2) is connected to wrt54g(#1) by a cable running from the Lan port on wrt54g(#1) to the WAN port on wrt54g(#2). All devices connected to both routers work fine except my Xbox360 that's connected to my wrt54g(#2). I can get onto xbox live but my Nat setttings are set to moderate keeping me from finding alot of games online. What I need to do is get ports 3074 & 88 open but I can't figure out how to do this with the cascading routers. How would I go about opening those ports? Do I need to give you more information?

As you have 2 Wireless Router and they are setup in a 2 Different Networks, If you open the ports on your 2nd router, your 1st Router will Block the Ports for XBOX. So i think in this case you need to Open the Ports on your Both the Routers.
First you need to login to your 2nd Router setup page, click Here and this will guide you how to enable port forwarding on your router for XBOX.
Once you do the settings on your 2nd router, now you need to login to the 1st router setup page and again you need to do the Port tirgerring and click on save settings. Now check if you are able to play and join the games on your XBOX. I might think this should solve the problem.

I want to change Router2's Operating Mode from "Gateway" to "Router" because I
want to turn off NAT on Router2 so that I can access all computers attached to
Router2 by their individual IP instead of using port forwarding at Router2.
The problem is after the mode change from "Gateway" to "Router", and regardless
whether I disable RIP or enable RIP, and on what interfaces it is enabled, computer
192.168.2.160 does not have internet connection.
    Observations:
[0] INTRAnet works as I can reach computer 192.168.2.160 from computer behind Router1
    192.168.1.x and vice versa.
[1] ping and traceroute *work* on Router2 itself using the built-in dianostic tool.
[2] nslookup on computer 192.168.2.160 always works on new lookup. It uses
    192.168.2.1 as the resolver.
[3] tcptraceroute stops after step 2:

    [/pre]
This is not expected because NAT to internet should still be done by Router1, no? Computer
behind Router1 with IP 192.168.1.x has internet connection.
[5] It looks like I cannot change the Routing Table Entry on Router2. I do not think I need to change anything,
    just an observation.
[6] If I use LAN to LAN connection, then both intranet and internet works. [The internet IP of Router2 can be
anything not in the same subnet of the Router1, and DHCP on the local side should be disabled to avoid conflict
with the the DHCP on Router1].

I have a question. Unfortunately in order to ask my question, I have to have a lengthy description of my setup. Basically, I have a second Linksys router in "router" operating mode with NAT disabled connected to the Verizon router, and I have a computer which is in a different subnet (192.168.2.x) behind the Linksys router. This computer can communicate with computers behind Verizon router in subnet (192.168.1.x), but cannot reach internet. This is a simplified version of my question, full details are in the original post.
If I setup the Linksys router in "gateway" operating mode, which means with NAT enabled, then both intranet and internet works, but there is no easy way to setup port forwarding for 10 compueters in 192.168.2.x network to communicate with 10 computers in 192.168.1.x network.
If I setup the Linksys router in a LAN to LAN configuration with Verizon routers, but this way all computers are in the same subnet, I want them to be in different subnet for access control and things like that.
I hope this makes things a little clear.
    Thanks.

  • Cascaded routers as one mega-wifi--network?

    Hi,
Right now, I have 3 Cisco/linksys routers linked together in my house.
    1) Master (connected to modem)WRT160Nv3
    2) WRT54G2
    3) WRT54G
As of now, I have them cascaded properly, and they each have their own wi-fi name.
You can acces the internet from any of them, because they are all connected to the WRT160Nv3
Is there any way to make these one big, single wi-fi network, not 3 separate ones? ex, with seamless transitions between routers?

Yes. Set them up as access point. Assuming the WRT160N is still on LAN IP 192.168.1.1 set up the second WRT as follows:
    1. Internet connection type to Automatic/DHCP.
    2. LAN IP 192.168.1.2
    3. Disable DHCP server.
    4. Wire one of the LAN ports of the second WRT to a LAN port of the main.
Do the same with the third except choosing 192.168.1.3 for LAN IP address.
For a wireless roaming network, choose identical SSID, wireless encryption, and passphrase. Make sure SSID broadcast is enabled on all WRTs. Choose different channels on each, e.g. 1,6,11 for best performance on all access points.
Good wireless clients should now be able to roam seamlessly between access points. But how well it works depends on the wireless card and the driver implementation. Some drivers will remain connected until the connection is lost and will then reconnect which will result in a brief interruption.

  • Cascading Routers and DCHP issues........

I am having trouble getting the wrt54g not to be a DCHP server even though  I have turned off that option.  I have cascaded the wrt54g to a Netgear 814 wireless router. The 814 has had DCPH turned off and all IP addresses are assigned by the DLS modem in the 172.16.1.xx range. This set has worked fine for several years.  I have successfully cascaded the wrt54g to the 814 and assigned the wrt54g an IP address in the correct range and any devices that are connected to the wrt54g via the Ethernet ports get assigned IP address on the 172.xxx subnet and can see and access all shared devices on the network. But when I connect to the wrt54g via wireless, my laptop  gets assigned an IP address in the 192.168.1.xx range, preventing me from accessing any shared devices on the network.  I’ve got the wrt54g set as a router, no DCHP, with an IP address of 172.16.1.39. the connection between the two routers is Ethernet to Ethernet. Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong? thanks

Follow this LINK and let us know if you still have problems.  The one thing I can see now is that the Netgear router or the WRT54G's IP address needs to changed so they match.  Example:  Netgear: 192.168.1.1   WRT54G: 192.168.1.2 but can be in either IP range.

  • Cascaded Routers: BEFSR81 primary, WRT54GX2 secondary

I have had a Linksys, 8-port ethernet router for about 7 years and it works fine. I recently got a laptop with a Linksys WPC54GS pc-card wireless adapter. I purchased a Linksys WRT54GX2 wireless router for the laptop. I wanted to add (cascade) the wireless router to the ethernet router. I had a lot of trouble getting it to work, so, long story short, I spent a couple hours on the phone with Linksys support and here's what I learned: The proper wiring configuration is: High-speed internet connection connected to the ethernet (primary) router. Wireless (secondary)router connected to the ethernet router using a regular, numbered port on each. Don't use the "uplink" port on the primary router or the "ethernet" port on the wireless router. I have Windows XP on my laptop, so I needed to use WEP security, not WPA. As far as IP addresses for the routers, the subnet number (192.168.x.#, where x is the subnet) had to match. Disable DHCP and NAT on the wireless router. I did the initial configuration of the wireless router with an ethernet cable connected to the laptop. After that(turned off DHCP), getting to the internal configuration page on the wireless router over the ethernet cable required a static IP address with the default gateway set to the IP address of the wireless router. Now that the entire system is up and running, I can get to the wireless router config page wirelessly using a DHCP address, static address not required. Hope all this helps someone, sometime. -J

  • Connection speed for Cascaded routers

I have a WRT54G cascaded to an E4200 v2.  I am closest to the WRT54G and connected at 54.  If I am in range of the E4200, can I force a connection to it instead of the slower router?

Well basically that adapter will connect at G speed on the 54G router and N speed on the 4200.  But, this will only make a difference if you do a lot of computer to computer transfers.  Your internet speed is 20Mbps which amost all routers can handle just fine.
Keep the same SSID but make sure they are on different channels to avoid interference, like 1 & 6, 1 & 11, or 6 & 11.  Make sure you are using WPA2-AES wireless encryption.

laptop connects at normal WIFI on router 2 --> internet works (IP: 192.168.1.150)
laptop connects at Guest WIFI on router 1 --> internet works (after login screen in Internet Explorer)  (IP: 192.168.33.108)
    this does NOT work
laptop connects at Guest WIFI on router 2 --> internet does NOT works
--> laptop does not get an IP-address

  • Modem and Cascading Routers: IP distribution?

    Hello!
I've been searching for my case here but couldn't find anything similar. I would really appreciate your help!
    I have a Sagemcom F@st 2764 ADSL modem and two WRT160N routers.
I want to create a network where the IP numbers are distributed by the ADSL Modem (it is now with DHCP on). To be more specific, the Modem has the IP 192.168.25.1 by default, and I want the computers connected to the Linksys routers to have 192.168.25.xxx IP ranges.
    SAGEMCOM: 192.168.25.1
    WRT160N 1: 192.168.25.2
    WRT160N2: 192.168.25.3
    Computers: 192.168.25.xxx
    Thanks!

Your 'modem' is a modem/router combo unit or Gateway.   You need to have that unit put in Bridge mode and then connect your routers.  You do not want to use the router portion of that Gateway.

  • Cascading 2 routers, lost time synchronization

    Hi,
I have 2 cascaded routers (LAN-LAN): RV220W (main) and E3000 (slave), with DHCP and NAT off. Both routers are set with the same Wifi signals (same settings, apart from channels). My aim is to have a parental rule to switch off wireless connection for  some  MAC/IP addresses. All rules are properly setup, everything is supposed to work, but my issue is that the second router doesn't keep the time, hence the parental schedule doesn't trigger properly.
Any suggestion? I am going crazy with this now...

The router must be connected to the WAN port for time updates.  Since your 2nd router is not, it will not keep the time.

  • 2 routers on the same network

I have installed 2 Linksys routers type WRT160N and a WRT160Nv3. Both ar DHCP installed, channels are 1 & 10, IP adresses are divided so Linksys 1: 192.168.1.1 - 149 and Linksys 2 :192.168.1.150 - 200. If anybody have another idea please come forward. Many thanks in advance.

You are trying to cascade routers. There are 2 ways to cascade routers: LAN to WAN and LAN to LAN.
LAN to WAN is connecting the LAN connection of the Router 1 to the WAN port of the Router 2. [Use this if you want the computers to be on 2 different networks.]
LAN to LAN is connecting the LAN connection to one of the LAN ports of the Router 2. [Use this method if you want the computers to be on the same network]
The complete steps on how to do this is explained in this article, click here.

  • Two WRT54G routers One DSL Connection?

Thank you for reading my request.
Situation:  I have one Internet connection and I have need of two networks.  One filtered with OpenDNS and the other unfiltered.  I have a Speedstream DSL router provided by ISP for connecting to Internet.  I have two WRT54G's and would like to utilize them to form two networks.  The Speedstream is a router with a gateway address of 192.168.1.254.
From that Speedstream (only one network plug) I would like to go to a 5port switch.  From that switch, I would like to configure the two WRT's to be two different networks (one using OpenDNS settings for filtering) with one having a 192.168.1.x address scheme and the other (no Internet filtering) having a 192.168.10.x scheme.  Both would have DHCP enabled for their networks and the Speedstream would have DHCP disabled.  There is not a need (at this point) to have the networks communicate.
Is this possible and if so, is there some semblence of a walkthrough for it?
Thank you again for reading my request.

Yes, this setup is possible. As long as the modem will be able to support more than one connection, then you may connect the 2 routers thru the switch.
The only thing that I see as a possible concern is about double NATting. If ever there is a need for you to open any ports in the router, then you will have to do double port forwarding or open a port in both the router and modem.
You may check this link how to cascade routers (follow Cascading a Linksys Router to a Linksys Cable Gateway with Internet-to-LAN Connection):

  • Using Multiple Linksys EA6500 routers

I would like to use multiple routers on my network.  I need to have one downstairs, that is connected to my DSL Modem, then another one on a different floor.  The first and second router will be connected via wired and wireless on both floors.  Would this router be able to accomplish this?  Also if one fails, I could used the secondary one as the main router.

The only way to use multiple routers in the network would be to cascade them. Meaning there should be a physical connection from one router to another. If your modem is just a plain modem then you will have to set one primary router then connect the secondary router with an ethernet cable. You have the option to either set the secondary router on bridge mode or use a LAN-to-LAN connection if you would like all your devices to remain in one network or you may cascade them by using a LAN-to-WAN connection. This will mean that the secondary router will have a different network. If your modem is a modem/router then you may connect both routers to the modem and configure them that way so that if one fails the other will still work. There is no way to make the second router connect wirelessly to the first router. It will always require a wired connection.

  • Cascade valet m-10 with wrt54g and wap54

Hello, got a question I Read the article about cascading routers, but still unsure of how i should set up my new valet m-10
Im currently using a WRT54G as my main router connected to my modem in my home office, and a WAP54 set up as a repeater in the living Room. We have multiple devices still using Wireless G, and a few that have Wireless N so im wanting
to use the valet just for my N devices and My WRT54 & WAP54 for the G. So do I just cascade the valet off the WRT54? or should I make the Valet the main Router and cascade the G routers? the reason I have the repeater is because the wireless signal is weak in the living room and bedrooms. any ideas that could help me is appreciated thanks ~=)

If your WRT54G and WAP54G are working then you need not have disturb the connection. As well as if you want to make the WRT54G as the primary router then you can even do that. Second there are two ways to connect a Linksys router to another router:
    1. LAN to LAN – Connecting one of the Ethernet ports (LAN ports) of the second Valet router to one of the Ethernet ports (LAN ports) of the main router.
This connection makes the computers connected to both routers to be on the same LAN IP segment. This will allow sharing of resources within the network.
    2. LAN to WAN – Connecting one of the Ethernet ports (LAN ports) of the main router to the Internet port (WAN port) of the second Valet router.
This connection makes it easier to identify which router the computers are connected to since they will have different LAN IP segments. Thus, computers that are connected to router A will not be able to communicate with router B, and vice versa since they are two different networks.

  • Verizon Fios router in front of 2 Linksys routers

I have had Verizon Fios for about two years and my configuration was a WRT300N V1 connected to Fios, which was setup for DHCP reservations, and a WRT54GS V2 connected LAN-2-LAN to the WRT300N. Everything worked fine.
I just upgraded to Fios TV and was told that a Verizon router (an Actiontec I think) has to now be connected to Fios since the tv boxes connect to the router. Just to quickly get it working I changed the WRT300N to LAN mode (disabled DHCP and NAT) and plugged it into the Verizon LAN port. This worked for the hardwired and wireless devices directly connected to the WRT300N. However the hardwired devices connected to the WRT54GS cannot connect to the internet but wireless devices connected to the WRT54GS can. Curiously, anyone know why this would be the case?
What I really want to do is setup the WRT300N and WRT54GS as I originally did, where the WRT300N would do DHCP reservations. From looking on this site it appears I need to change the WRT300N to a 192.168.2.1 (currently is 192.168.1.3) so that it is a separate network and connect the WAN port on the WRT300N to a LAN port on the Verizon router. I attempted this and it did not appear to work (could not access the internet) and I was wondering if someone could tell me that what I am looking to do can be done and how to set it up. Thanks in advance Jay

Actually I wanted to connect the WAN port of the WRT300N to a LAN port of the Actiontec Verizon router, and connect the WRT54GS to the WRT300N from LAN-to-LAN.
I read the instructions on cascading routers, which is what I wanted to do between the WRT300N and Actiontec. I set everything up and it initially did not work (and as a result I started this thread). I then realized that the firmware on the WRT300N and WRT54GS were not the latest versions so I updated the firmware and everything worked!
So the WRT54GS now has an ip of 192.168.5.101, has DHCP disabled and is connected from a LAN port to a LAN port on the WRT300N. The WRT300N now has an ip of 192.168.5.100, has DHCP enabled, has DHCP Reservations being used (as was before and is the reason I wanted to keep that part of the network the same) and is connected from the WAN port to the LAN port of the Verizon Actiontec router. The Verizon router is still on the 192.168.1 address. I guess I should have looked at the firmware first.
    Thanks for the reply
