CD Mix Project

I am completely new to audio development on the MAC. My employer has set me up Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro which includes Soundtrack.
To accommodate myself with my new tools and environment I am doing a simple mixing project that will include taking 13 mp3 thumpin house trax and mastering them into an “essential mix” Pete Tong would be proud of.
Needed parameters;
Transpose/pitch change individual trax? - absolutely!
Volume/fade adjustments? -Yep!
Master compression? -Darn tootin!
If I were using Vegas (Sonic Foundry/Sony), I would have been done with it last week and my familiarity with such is probably my undoing. As it is I am pullin my hair out trying to figure out how all the sudden I have become a droolin audio idiot on a MAC.
Logic, Soundtrack, Garageband? Nothing seems to be working for me to this end.
Suggestions?

  • How to add files to a mixed project from Premiere?

I have a 28:30 video at work that was cut in Premiere.  While editing, I would send single clips to Audtion to remove sounds, or noise, etc...  Worked great.  Nearing the end of the project, I exported the entire sequence to Audtion to do a first mix.  Worked great, except now I'm stuck.  I need to add a few more sound effects and swap out a music track or two. I added them in Premiere to get timecode when the clips need to start.  In Audition, I opened up the project for the video that I mixed last week.  When I try to import the audio files I need to add, they're all greyed out and won't import.
Am I doing something wrong, or is there a way to perhaps make changes in Premiere and have them update in Audition without remixing the entire video?
*Note: The files I'm trying to bring into my project are AIFF*

Just figured out the initial problem- The files I was given don't have an extension on them.  Once I added it, Audition likes them just fine.  Still can't figure out the second issue- can I add files in Premiere, and bring it into an already mixed project in Audition?

I hope someone can lead me in the right direction, and if that means "read the manual", I can handle that. I've got 60 audio tracks that I am importing into a Logic song template. I need to create more audio tracks, however, Logic is only allowing me to create "Audio 1" to "Audio 24". Now, when I create a new audio track "Audio 24" appears again. My Preferences are set up to handle 100+ tracks, and I can create Audio Instrument tracks and assign them to audio track 25 and up, but I'm only limited to 24 Audio Instrument tracks. I'd much rather have Audio Tracks as oppposed to modified Audio Inst Tracks, although it seems to function fine. I'm looking at the manual, I'm not on my Mac, and there is a rename track function. I'll try that when I get home and try to rename my new "Audio 24" to "Audio 25". Just thought I'd get this post out there if anyone has any ideas that I'm missing. When I click and hold on the audio track for the drop down menu, it only shows 24 Audio tracks to choose from, along with Audio Inst and Audio Aux and such.
I appreciate any advice anyone has for me, so thanks in advance.

    Hey ButterProductions,
This one's actually really easy. Use setup assistant to create a new song with the desired number of audio channels. Save it as a template.
You can use create multiple tracks-if it's being silly an creating reundant ones just delete the redundant ones. Best to get this sorted out bgefore getting too far into your mix.
Once you have used setup asst to create a template you can then import the enviro or any of it's layers into existing songs.
    Cool?

Can I adjust volume for sections of a track? I have the surf sound throughout the song but want to lower and raise the surf volume for certain sections of the song. Can anyone help - I'm a beginner!

    I quote:
'Set Volume and Pan curves on each track
Rather than control the volume and pan of all the tracks in your song, you can control each track individually. Click the triangle in the track header to reveal the Track Volume/Pan curves. Select Track Volume and then adjust the curves in the track to set the volume of the track over time. Select Track Pan to set the sound to move from stereo left to stereo right over time.'

    Suggestions?

The Ableton suggestion is spot on. Logis is not set up to do what you want if you actually want to execute a DJ-style mix. The tempo of any song is usually not constant. It will drift. This is especially true if you are getting any of your songs from vinyl recordings. Logic cannot handle or correct these drifts - Ableton can.
Even if you set the tempo of the entire track based on the length of the region, it will not account for the tempo drift within the song. It will only give you the average tempo of the track
If you simply want to butt the songs end-to-end, you can to that with this method. You cold trim the songs in the Sample Editor and then butt them together in the Arange page. Drag the file in to the Arange page, select the file, then highlight the area in the bar area that corresponds with the length of the song. Then press the "T" key. This will set the Logic tempo to match the song tempo in that region.
Repeat the process for each track.
This, though, is not a Dj mix. For that, use Ableton.

  • Move tracks from one project to another?

I'd like to know if there's a way to move tracks (with or without inserts, automation and other stuff) from one project to another.
I have a project containing a working mix of a song that I've spent many hours assembling. One of my bandmates sent me parts he tracked in GarageBand, two audio tracks and one track using a MIDI instrument. I imported the GB file into LE and made some edits. I'd like to bring those three tracks into my current mix.
I understand that I can bounce each track out individually, then re-import them on new tracks in the mix project, but this means turning off all the inserts and EQ on each track and blah blah blah, it seems like there must be an easier way. Being able to directly move or import the tracks would preserve my editing flexibility in a way that bounces won't.
Please, any suggestions may prove valuable.
    Thank you for your time.

...let me also re-emphasize: the GB2 file was imported and converted and tossed. I am trying to move tracks from one Logic Express project to another Logic Express project.
    Just to be perfectly clear.

  • Program monitor during playback in always in focus; preventing effects panel or mixer to be seen

    Dear Premiere CC users:
It must have been some recent update for premiere pro (a "bug fixes" one), which changed how Premiere works now.
I use 2 monitors where one is full screen preview, and another is for whole application. On that second monitor I used to have workspace organized in a way that NO program monitor was shown. I used to have effect panel / audio mixer + project files + effect controls always shown. Source monitor was triggered when I doubleclicked a clip, program monitor I had always hidden behind, because I have another full screen monitor for program.
Now when I playback program monitor is instantly pulled in front and I cant have mixer engaged, or any other windows in same panel. If I close the program monitor I loose picture on fullscreen monitor too. I don't want to see program monitor in my primary display where premiere GUI sits; only on external display, on second display. But from some update on, this is not possible anymoore.
Now if I want to have external full screen preview, a regular program monitor is always visible too. It is not needed, annoying, and it takes space on GUI area for other frequent needed things; like effects, or mixer. Shure it is good option to have it on a small laptop lcd, but annoying on a 2 big LCD setup.
Does anybody know how to change this back?
Many thanks for opinions or help.
PS: Right now I'm using a workaround: I pulled program monitor from main panel, and put it in panel with volume meter and reduced it's size to 1 x 1 cm - so It is almost invisible and does not steal too much my GUI real estate. But It seems that I have less smooth playback on external display now when program is played back on 2 screens simultaneously, than before.

I worked with almost all major big NLE products, and once I was hired at local studio with Premiere 6.0/6.5. It was nightmare compared to big ones from that time. But I personaly use and love Premiere PRO from version 1 (e.g. Premiere 7) on. I have tons of stories of broken projects on so many ways. So custom workspaces are jus a drop in to the ocean. As I love it, I cant admire some very old programming solution on what Premiere is based on. But regardles I lasted with Adobe for longer than decade now.
I live with all errors and fight with them by backuping projects in hundred of instances and with splitting project on smaller blocks - e.g. intro, reception, wedding, first dance... I always export finished part of feature in several needed formats and save whole project via "project manager" too. Than I have backup of all that of at least 2 times (3 for projects). I always save original files from camera too.
Regarding updates: We are not used from Adobe to have ANY updates or bug fixes to their products before just new wersion was released. We cursed that hundreds of times. Now they update more than Microsoft. And we are unhappy of that either.
Just today I learned, that some update might change the behaviour of marker placement with "*" on timeline... weird. Sometimes markers are added as clip markers, sometimes as timeline - as I was used to. I must dig into it...
    regards.

  • How to access code in other projects?

    Hi all,
I ran into an issue in FlexBuilder I'm not sure how to resolve, hopefully someone here can help.  I have several projects in my workspace right now I'll call them project A and B.  I have one project in particular, call that project C, that needs access to code contained in a couple of other projects, A and B.  I don't want to copy all those files from the other projects into this one cause there's a lot of files, it's tedious, and unmaintainable.  I don't want to make all those files into a flex library either cause it's not really necessary.
I tried adding the folders in project A and B into the source path of project C but when I tried to import those files it did not work.  So does anyone know of a way that I can access code from other projects in the same workspace?  If you could provide an example also that would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
Additional info: The code complete for the import actually shows me the files in the source path are available.  In fact, when I hit F3 it points me to the proper file in the other project.  However, FlexBuilder keeps telling me the type was not found or it isn't a compile time constant.

    Michael Borbor wrote:
I never said don't use OOP, Flex SDK is all about classes, and abstraction, but last time I check there wasn't polimorphism, so AS3 it's not yet a purely OO.
No polymorphism? You should check again. Just because overloading is not supported that does not mean that polymorphism can't be applied. Polymorphism does not start or end with overloading, please read up on polymorphism ( http://www.adobe.com/devnet/actionscript/articles/oop_as3_05.html or find a more generic definition and see that polymorphic principles can be applied in AS 3.0 too ).
No, ActionScript is not purely OOP, but what is? The only language I know of that is considered "a pure OOP language" is Java. Does that make other languages less good? Definitely not. Just because AS 3.0 does not support overloading it does not mean that OOP principles can't be applied and nor does it mean that it's not a valid OOP language.
    Michael Borbor wrote:
Instead of learning this architectural stuff If I were new to Flex, first I'll learn what the heck is the Flex SDK, and obviously AS3, then I can move on to design patter, singletons, decorators, PureMVC, and so on.
Well, sice I don't know ehwhoknows and I have no idea how new he is ( he may be new to Flex but that doesn't mean that he is new to programming ), I took "the risk" to add an additional opinion to his post saying that "sure what ntsiii said is totally cool but in the future, you might want to read up on OOP and design patterns because they offer much more than mixing projects in a barbaric manner".
Obviously, if he is new to programming ( a detail that I don't see being mentioned in his post ) then he should stick to the simple things, but does that mean that we can't point out other solutions that may be more complex and harder to understand for a newbie at the moment. At least, he'll now know that there are other solutions out there too. Everything has it's time, but without telling him that "hey, solution A si ok, but solution B would be much better on the long run" then how do you expect him to find out about solution B? By accident?
I wasn't trying to prove anyone wrong, all that I wanted to point out is that there are other solutions out there too that offer much more on the long run. If he can't handle OOP at the moment, no problem, but at least give him the chance to try it out.
@ ATIF FAROOQ: I totally agree that it would be nice if the guys at Adobe would implement overloading and not only, abstract classes would be nice too ( and I mean "real abstract classes" like in Java, not workarounds ).
@ Muzak: Totally agree, I said to use a Library mainly because that's what I use most ( beside simply pasting classes from a project into another; I do this occasionally and sometimes when I'm lazy ). In either case, the final goal is achieved: reusability.

  • Is there a way I can use a Master with sub-projects on different calendars?

Wondering if I can get some advice creating a Master Project (MSP2013 Standard, no Project Server software). I have 3 projects of which 2 are utilising a Standard calendar 8:00AM to 5:00PM 8hr day 40hr week, and 1 project (the largest) utilising a Customised
    calendar 7:30AM to 3:30PM  7.5hr day 37.5hr week.
The dominant project is running on the Customised calendar so I have set the Global Options in the Master to reflect the 7:30AM to 3:30PM  7.5hr day 37.5hr week. Then set the calendar in Master Project Information default to the Customised calendar.
Finally, the resource pool for all 3 projects is in the Master.
No problem when I insert the sub-project into the Master which is using the customised calendar. All data is reflective of the original project.  However, when I insert either of the 2 sub-projects using the 40hr week calendar the Summary Headings for
the inserted projects are incorrect.  For example, instead of being 2 weeks duration, the summary heading displays 2.13 weeks, and instead of 4 weeks duration, the summary heading displays 4.27 weeks.
The Global settings appear to be interfering with the projects on the Standard calendars.  I am surprised and extremely frustrated as I thought the settings in the Master would not affect anything?
Sorry guys, have posted this in 3 different places as it is so important to me!

Hi Guys, many thanks for your responses, really appreciate your time, however I am finding this much more complex. I have put my original sheets to one side and started again. Once again this is very important hence a lot of detail here. I am hoping something
will provide a clue where I am going wrong.
New sheet |save as Master | Change Working Times |copy Standard Calendar and called it 37.5 Hour
    Calendar| No exceptions | Work Weeks tab |Details | Set Monday to Friday 7:30AM to 12:30PM then 1:00PM to 3:30PM. Selected Options | Schedule | Start 7:30AM End 3:30PM |Hours 7.5 | Hours per week 37.5 |Auto Scheduled |Duration Hours|
Work Hours |Fixed Duration | OK OK. Project | Project Information | Calendar changed to 37.5 Hour Calendar | Save.
In my previous example I noted that my main project is scheduled 37.5 hours but I will skip inserting it here, the issue is subprojects with different settings to the Global, that is mixing projects with different calendars in a Master.
    New sheet | save as 40 Hour Project |Change Working Times |Standard Calendar | No exceptions | Selected Options | Schedule | Start 8:00AM End 5:00PM |Hours 8 Hours per week 40 |Auto Scheduled |Duration Weeks | Work Hours |Fixed Duration
    | OK OK | Save.
    Entered 5 new Tasks, all 2weeks duration, all linked Finish to Start. Inserted a Summary Heading named 40 Hour Summary | 40 Hour Summary Duration = 10 wks | Start 9 June 1014 8:00 AM | Finish 15 August 2014 5:00 PM |Created 1 Resource called Fred | 100%
    |$100 Standard Rate | Assigned Fred to all tasks 100% | Project | Project Information | Statistics | 10w 400h $40.000 |Save and Close | All correct.
Back to the Master | Project | Insert Subproject | selected 40 Hour Project |Duration 400 hrs | Start 9 June 2014 8:00AM | Finish 21 August 2014 10:30AM. It appears the Global settings are affecting the inserted subproject note the finish time is now
    10:30AM. Project | Project Information |Statistics |Duration 400h | Work 400h | All correct!
BUT | select View Outline Show Subtasks |This is where further changes have happened | Project | Project Information |Statistics |Duration is now
    374.5h | Work 400h.
Besides information being displayed incorrectly these figures will affect all Reports. This example suggests you cannot have subprojects in a Master that are associated with different calendars? Surely not! Please help if you can, I have
spent hours searching for answers, and I can’t believe I am the only one who has come across this! Many thanks.......

  • Two separate mixes - how I combine?

    Hi,
I recently finished a track in Logic which I mixed and also gave to someone else to mix.
Listening back, there are bits of both mixes I like and dislike.  Is there any way of combining the Logic files so I can choose the best bits from both mixes?
    Ben

Using the Logic broswer in the right hand side bar you can import anything and everything from one Logic project into another. Just open one of the mixes, find the other mix project file in the browser. Double clicking on it will bring up a list of the tracks and the things you can import (content, plugins, sends etc). Select what you want and hit 'import'. You might then end up with MORE than you want, but you can pare down from there. Hope that's helpful.

  • Mixing formats in sequence

I have an upcoming project that will be using a lot of file footage in various formats. The video has not been ingested yet, but will consist of Mini DV 16:9, DVC Pro 50 16:9, DVC PRO HD 1080i and some 720p as well. Also, I'll have to rip some video from DVD. I'll be working with FCP 6. Final delivery will be on DVD. Ratio of HD to SD looks like it will be about 50/50. I'm trying to figure out the best workflow here. I'm thinking my sequence might be DVC Pro 50 Anamorphic. Should I convert the miniDV to that prior to editing along with the HD footage? Or should I drop the HD stuff into the sequence as is and render away? This is by far the most "mixed" project I've had and I'm not sure exactly how to proceed. I do know that I do not want to upres the SD stuff since it's going to end up SD anyway. I'm also not working on my own system for this project. Newer Mac and OS, but still FCP 6.0.6. Don't have the exact specs at hand at the moment.

You could transcode it all to DVCPRO50 or ProRes (in SD 16:9) before you start and save the headache of the rendering during the edit, but the rest of your planned workflow looks OK to me.

  • I need to do a "clean install" How do I retain my passwords, etc?

I intend to purchase a new hard drive and do a clean install of OSX 10.4, but I shudder to think that I won't be able to restore all of my passwords, iChat stuff, e-mails address books, etc.
Is there a method? I have used 'carbon copy cloner" in the past to duplicate my current system on a new drive, but now I need to start from scratch, as I was informed that some of my system problems are due to updating from earlier OSX versions....
    Any advice?

So much for that.... here is the synposis:
I am a professional mixer. I have a private high end mix room in Manhattan.
I use Apple Logic pro running on a G5 dual 2Ghz tower as my main transport and have several racks which contain all of my outboard signal processing (nearly 60 channels of outboard compression EQ and other processors).
I rely on the MOTU PCI-424 and 2 HD192 and one 1296 interfaces as my patchbay for this gear. Insert latency is compensated by a plugin I invented called "latency fixer" which was implemented by the UK based 'OS collective" and is available as freeware.
I have a separate, internal 10,000rpm hard drive which stores only the audio tracks for the current mix project. I also have a UAD-1 card which I use very sparingly, usually only one active plugin. I always use the largest possible Core Audio buffer setting (1024samples) and the Uad-1 driver apparently doubles that figure.
Recently I added a Duende to the system. Initially I had very dubious luck getting audio through this device without dropouts and random temporal anomolies, i.e. If I inserted the Duende on a few of the drum tracks, these tracks would randomly shift in time by several hundred milliseconds. Not good. I became aware that OS X had serious problems with random latency when using aggregate audio drivers, and upon further investigation learned that there was an identical problem when using a firewire based audio interface. According to reports online, Apple ignored this issue for more than 2 years, but when Apogee released it's "Ensemble" firewire interface, the iShit hit the iFan, so to speak. They quickly addressed this problem by rewriting the kernel level firewire driver.
This new driver was sent to me and I installed it on my 10.4.5 OS. This fixed the random latency issue in my aggregate interface driver, and seemed to improve the performance of the Duende as well. Recently I have again been experiencing the random time shifts when using the Duende.
It's a professional embarrassment in my system. I find myself spending 4 hours on a mix and 6 hours troubleshooting the system in order to print the mix without spurious noises.
I was advised by apple that a clean install of OSX would improve the situation. I did a clean install of OS 10.4.8 and the problems with the Duende are actually worse than they were under 10.4.5.
I would appreciate any thoughtful advice about how to remedy this problem.

  • How to replace background music but retain sound effects

I am trying to add/replace the background music of a series of clips that all have sound effects.  I noticed that many of the sound effects carry over into the other channels.  I am using the 5.1 preset currently.  Ideally I would like to add a song to this series where the music and sound effects can heard appropriately from all channels.
Is this possible in FCP?  Do I need to use Soundtrack instead?

That isn't SPLIT track...that is a 5.1 mix. There's a difference.  The audio is mixed, and elements are in all the tracks, but less in some and more in others.
SPLIT TRACK is something that we do on the high end deliverable stage, so that other departments that use what we deliver can use only the audio elements they need.  PROMOS for example (that I also cut), would like to have DIALOG separate, SFX separate and music separate.  So we can use our own music.  We would like clean dialog and SFX.  If we are given a 5.1 mix, we cannot use it, as it is not split tracked.
Your source is a fully mixed project...the audio files are not separate. music, effects and dialog are all mixed...you cannot separate them.  Not unless you request a split track master from the company that produced the spot you are using.

  • Filing Systems

    Hey everyone,
I am getting to the point where I have a lot of projects going. Some of them are just little ideas floating around, some are actual projects. I have created a fairly simple system to categorize them so that I can access them quickly now. My question to the group is this:
When you are doing multiple mixes/bouncing down multiple songs/importing exporting for mastering/anything that requires swapping of files...how do you track what is what? Do you keep all the songs incarnations in a specific folder or is there a naming system that you use and do global searches to find matches? I am toying with a bunch of different ideas so any insight would be helpful.

    NAME everything.
Remember,NAME is the most important thing. You might not use PC as a Mac, they can't treat me as mikey10101....
    My practise will be:~
1)Create a Folder (name as Mactreouser Album)
2)Inside the Folder with create a few folder (name as Music Arrangement,Mixing,Mastering,
    for example)
3)In the Music Arrangement Folder contain all my Arrangement and Tracking projects (Song 01 ,Song
    02, Song 03...)
4)Save the Mixing Project into Mixing Folder and Every Bounce from the Mixing will go into the
folder of Mixing and name the Bounced Audio as Song01.1...Song01.2...and so on...easy to
monitor/audition every Mix for the Song
5)When come to the Mastering Stage,is the same,Save every project and Bounce the Audio files into
Mastering Folder and name as above for Audition.
set up your path then you'll not confuse to your messey titled files and folder

Thank you for the responses. I am not sure if I optimized the video, but I'm not quite sure how to do that. Maybe that would fix my problem. I shot in 4k, but Divinci Resolve light only allows you to export in 1080p. The full version allows for 4k.

The question I think that would fix my issue is, How do I make my 4k, 2k, and 1080p, mixed project and make the entire thing 1080p? I hope someone will be able to answer this. I'm sure it's a simple fix. I'm just ignorant of how to make this possible.
