Change Permissikons on Multiple Files?

Hello,
I'm a recent convert from the Windows/PC world, and so far I really like everything about Apple OS X. I'm very happy about the ease with which I can get my home sharing set up, with user accounts and access from multiple computers.
But I'm having one little problem.
I have an iMac in my office, and a Mac Mini on another floor. I was able to move most of my files from one computer to another, but for some reason certain folders contain files with the wrong permissions and I'm being blocked from moving them around.
I know how to change permissions one file at a time, but some of these folders have 70 - 100 files in them. Is there a way to select several files at once and change their permissions as a batch? When I accessed 70 files and then did a "get info" I got 70 separate info windows open at once, and each time I want to change permissions I have to "unlock" it, then enter my administrator password -- not fun!
Please help!
Thanks,
Matt

Niel and Barney-15E,
Yes, I noticed that the "Get Info" command changes when I hold down the Option key. However, the Inspector still does not allow me to change permissions on the selected files as a batch.
nachdenki,
OK, I know I can change the permissions on the folder, but doing this adds an extra listing to the "sharing" area of the System Preferences, which I don't want to do. I just want to set the sharing preferences for the folder, not each sub-folder. Also, I read the "apply to enclosed items" command causes issues with the files, so I think I want to avoid that option.
This whole thing is a little strange. I set the permissions for the entire folder through the "Sharing" area of System Preferences, so I don't know why this particular sub-folder has access problems.
The best thing would be some ability to set permissions on a batch of files.
Thanks,
Matthew

  • Changing Styles Across Multiple Files

We have a lengthy catalog that we build in spreads. We don't make a book file, since the pages are all sent individually to our prepress people, and we also have pages that copywriters use to create the copy in the first place.
Every piece of copy in this book is set up on character and paragraph styles. We start with a master template, so all the styles have the same names.
We're almost done with the whole thing, and then today we find out from the Office of Secret Self-Important Ivory Towers that they have chosen new fonts for us and not told us what they are until now, so now we have to change every single font from the top down.
Is there any way to synchronize the styles without building a book file? It's not the end of the world if that's what we have to do, but it won't work for the writers' files, and it's going to require a lot of manual tweaking to keep it from shuffling pages everywhere.
We're on CS4, by the way.

If all of your documents share the same style names, then you can do this relatively easily without using the book features.
Although it is easier to do this by using the book features, what you need to do is open the document that you consider to be your source or master document. Make all the style changes as needed and save it.
    Open the next document.
Go to the Paragraph Style panel
In the panel menu, select Load All Text Styles... (this loads Paragraph and Character styles)
    Select the master document.
Allow the incoming styles to override any existing styles of the same name.
Cleanup any text as needed, save and close.
    Repeat for all other documents.
If you have object styles, use the same proceedure with the object style panel.
If you have swatches that change, you can Save Swatches from the master file, then Load Swatches in the other files.
Note: this would be far easier to do by temporarily adding all the documents to a book (be sure to disable any auto page numbering in the book) and then Sync from the book panel.

  • Changing path of multiple files in iTunes.

I have a fun one for you. Every time I have an update for iTunes, it decides that it randomly no longer wants to recognize certain songs on certain playlists on my iPhone. The latest episode decided that of the 25k songs in my library it wanted to do it for about 2k of them. The best part is that they are all songs on playlists. So there are random songs from thousands of albums that have this as their path: file://localhost/C:/Users/Brian/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/etc.....
I have all of my music on an external drive, and changing the path for all of my music to the default and then reassigning it to the external drive does not work.
What I would like to do is select all of the songs that have this path and change them all at the same time so that I don't have to spend 2 days doing it one song at a time. Any insight?
    Thank you!
Actually here's an update - upon exploring the folder that each of the files should be in, I have come to find that iTunes has magically deleted all of the files from my computer and from my hard drive. They are still on my iPhone.....wow, incredibly annoying.

Take a look at this page from microsoft, it has one of three Methods to solve your problem (note they are talking bout installing a different product, but the error messages are the same):

  • Changing name of multiple files in automator?

I have many files in a folder with the incorrect extension name. Can I write a script to re-name the file names? If so, how would I go about doing it?
For example: file name 287596.JPG.jpg should be 287596.jpg (removing the .JPG, leaving the .jpg.
Any help would be great. Thanks!!

Move the folder to the desktop, and then enter the following into the Script Editor, which is in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder:
    set the_text to ".JPG"
    tell application "Finder"
    considering case
repeat with this_item in folder "folder name"
set the_name to name of this_item
    if the_name contains the_text then
    set string_1 to items 1 thru ((offset of the_text in the_name) - 1) of the_name as string
set string_2 to items ((offset of the_text in the_name) + (count the_text)) thru (count the_name) of the_name as string
    end if
    set name of this_item to string_1 & string_2
    end repeat
    end considering
    end tell
The folder's actual name goes in line 4, between the quote marks. Double quote marks and backslashes in the name need to be preceded with a backslash.

  • Changing multiple file permissions - Applications folder

After using migration assistant in Snow Leopard and then changing the username of my primary user, all third party apps in my Applications folder require me to enter the admin password when moving, updating with Sparkle, etc. They don't seem to have a primary owner.
I saw the steps outlined here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1778969 for changing permissions on multiple files but I'm wary of doing this on the Applications folder.
Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this? I went through files individually and i'm still getting messed up permissions all over the place. Thanks!

DO NOT use "apply to enclosed items" on the main Applications folder! Do not use it on any system created folders. they often have hidden ACLs and using this button would propagate the ACLs to everything inside. this is the case for the main Applications folder. there is no easy way to do what you want because Apple changed the permissions structure in Snow leopard and the default applications no longer have read+write access by admin users by default. I would suggest you don't mess with permissions on Applications. if you ever need to update a 3rd party application simply delete the existing copy in /Applications and put the new one in. it will have correct permissions.

  • When I want to select multiple files in a row, the click shift method and the click drag method is not working. Is there a setting I need to change and if so how?

My click then shift+click will not select the multiple files, Is there a setting to change somewhere?

Click and shift works for me, so this is not a Mavericks bug.
Try deleting any finder.plist files and restarting.
To do that, click the desktop so Finder is active, then click on Go in the menu bar. In the dropdown select Library. In that folder look for Preferences. In the Preferences folder there will be at least two files whose names start com.apple.finder.....
    Trash them all and restart.

  • Change multiple files name at once

    Hi
I would like to know if someone knows how to change multiple files name in mac. I need to name hundreds of files name, and dont want to do it one by one ... Example: Change from: Doc 1, Doc 2, Doc3 ...to: 2010Summer1; 2010Summer2,etc...
Thanks in advance for any help,
    Joao

Make an Automator workflow that changes the name. You would Replace text of "Doc" with "2010Summer". When you open Automator, choose Workflow. Drag in a Get Selected Finder Items and then drag in a Rename Finder Items. Select the "Replace Text" option. Fill in the Details, select the files in the Finder, and then run the workflow.
There are also some third-party file renamers. Check MacUpdate or VersionTracker. I don't know if there are any free ones.

  • Batch file rename.  I have multiple files I want to rename, that have a date in their name in the mm/dd/yy format. The slashes seem to freak out the batch rename function.  Any workarounds that would help me avoid manually changing each name?

OS X Yosemite 10.10.2, Macbook Air,
Finder batch file rename function. I have multiple files I want to rename, that have a date in their name in the mm/dd/yy format. The slashes seem to freak out the batch rename function and it won't work.  I took out the slashes and worked fine.  Any workarounds that would help me avoid manually changing each name?  I should point out that I want to leave most of the name intact just change the first word in each name.  Also the files I'm working with are in PDF format.

That's a comment in the file. It has no effect at all.

  • Changing the owner to multiples files...

Hello, How Can I change the owner to multiples files.
Now I am doing this one by one with properties option (webui).
    Win2000

The JAVA API would be a good start. Simploy construct a search for the appropriate documents, then recurse through the SearchResults and apply your changes.

  • Change multiple files permissions?

    Hi,
I would like to know if there's any way to change the permissions (from read only to read and write) of multiple files at once (without doing it one by one) ?
    Thanks in advance
    iMac 20" Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I was able to find this concerning the X check box.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106712
    Execute (--x)
You can open the AppleWorks application if you have the execute permission for it.
Also note that you must have execute permission for any folder that you can open; thus File Sharing requires execute permission set for other, world, and everyone for the ~/Public folder, while Web Sharing requires the same setting for the ~/Sites folder.

  • Just updated to itunes 12.1.0.71 - big problem - can no longer access the legacy "Get Info" where you could change multiple files, easily add artwork, add album name for TV show, and much more. In previous iTunes 12 you'd right click

Just updated to itunes 12.1.0.71 - big problem - can no longer access the legacy "Get Info" where you could change multiple files, easily add artwork, add album name for TV show, and much more. In previous iTunes 12 you'd right click and hold shift key and be able to get to it. Anyone figured this out?

The "legacy" metadata editors, for which there was a "back door" in iTunes 12.0, have gone from 12.1.  However, the revised editors in 12.1 provide access to (almost) all the metadata elements that were available in iTunes 11, albeit in a different layout and with some additional constraints based on media kind.  Some users have / will have an issue with the statement that "Get Info has been completely redesigned in iTunes 12 to focus your attention only on what’s necessary for the selected item" since that removes some metadata elements that people may have been using in creative ways.  iTunes 12.1 basically gives you access to the fields that Apple think are necessary ... .  Some of the things that have been excluded by this rule:
track and disc number fields for video media kinds
show and episode fields for music
description tab for audiobooks made up of more than one file
Obviously the first two examples can be regarded as "overloading" the metadata elements - i.e., using them in ways that the designers didn't intend - but given that some users do find valid cases for this it's a shame that they've been deprecated in the new UI.  There are couple of workarounds:
in songs view (or any of the other columnar views), you can still select any fields to display, independent of media kind, and these can be edited (though only one at a time) by double-clicking in the relevant "cell"
you can (temporarily) change the media kind of an item (or group of items) to get access to metadata elements that would otherwise be inaccessible.
It may be worth submitting an issue via https://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html - I can't see it as a huge development task to have a user preference to switch between "show all fields" and "filter fields based on media kind".
One other oddity/irritation is that some of the tabs don't, by default, show all the available fields - you need to scroll up/down to access them or to expand the window by dragging on one of its corners.  Fortunately, the latter seems to be persistent - once you've done this to make all the fields visible the editor will open at the same (larger) size when opened again.

  • How do I close multiple files in Preview on OSX10.8 without having to click on "Revert Changes" for every file?

I opened, say, 100 PNG files that were saved in a landscape format.  So I selected all files, typed Cmd+L (to rotate left), and then viewed them for a while.  After I was finished, I tried to close all of them at once, but found I had to click on "Revert Changes" for every file?
In Snow Leopard, an option would come up allowing you to discard changes for ALL open files.  Here, I cannot seem to find that option (if it even exists).  Does anyone have an idea?

    From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences... ▹ General ▹ Ask to keep changes when closing documents: Off

After restoring my itunes library from being erased some of the songs are unable to be read by itunes because they have the extension '.tmp2' after the '.mp3'. How would I go about change all of the file extensions at once opposed to one at a time?

  • Ability to view multiple files in ONE window

I can see here that this is not a new topic really but the thing with Acrobat 9 is so frustrating that it is just unbelievable.
    This is another pearl:
Acrobat 9 "lost" its predecessors ability to view multiple files in ONE window. After opening four only documents I cannot see anything on the screen because the toolbars on each individual window cover all necessary view and nothing is left for the actual document. And sometimes I need to open 20 documents!
    This is ABSOLUTE DISASTER!!!
I found some explanations from Adobe on the Web that are more than a year old.
I was sure that by now this unfortunate mishandling of that feature (apparently it was dropped out from A9 deliberately - WHO'S IDEA WAS THAT?) would be somehow restorable.
Would anyone happen to know if this feature can get restored to how it was working in A7 or 8 (without the need to uninstall A9 and install A8)?

No, it can't be restored, unless Adobe decides to change the way Acrobat works (which is possible, but not likely).
By the way, it was Microsoft's idea... Adobe were just following their example on this.
You can make a feature request here: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
