Changing Backups location

Hi.
I'm having problems with my hdd, i know backups are stored in:
# Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
I only keep the latest, but even that way, i cant change the path. This should not be a problem, but my main HDD is a Solid State drive, and it has just 120gb, and from the approx. 25 free i used to have, my iphone's backup take up about 15gb.
I just want to save the backup in my secondary hard drive, now im moving every time the backups (but this will not be possible if my hdd gets filled, and its a very tedious process)
I've read that some people moved the whole Profile directory, but this is very problematic for me, and even more without a clean installation. I hope there is any way, modifying a config file, something, to do something as basic as this...
Thanks in advance.

So, Can we do the following:
1. Manually copy the all the backups pieces to the new server, put them under the same directory structure (e.g. if the original server had the backups under d:\oracle\backup\<SID> , then we create a similar dir structure on the new server)
2. Set the database serves along side the folders structures on the new server.
3. Connect to the RMAN catalog from the new server.
4. Either run duplicate or restore command to duplicate or restore the database.
is the above correct?
Thanksfor duplicate you need to place backup pieces in same location, when you are restoring from backups then specifically not needed.

    Hello
I am trying to change the backup location in an image that is in suspend mode to different location into different deployment share.
I have tried modifying varialbles.dat in Minint so it will reflect the new location in new deployment share, but it did not work.

    The variables.dat was my suggestion.
I'm struggling to understand why you can't just restart the deployment.

  • Changing backup location to prevent bloated roaming profile

In Windows 7 and Vista, iTunes backs up the iPhone to C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup which is part of the roaming profile. This bloats the roaming profile from around 100MB to over 2.5GB, making it very slow to log on and log off the PC, as the roaming profile is synchronised each time over the network with the copy on the server. How can I make iTunes use a location that is stored locally only, for example somewhere within C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Apple Computer? This problem also occurs on Windows XP, just with different file locations.

While it doesn't seem possible to change the location used by iTunes for the backup it may be feasible to redirect the data to another folder using a junction. Install NTFS Link. Move the folder *<Profiles>\<AppData>\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup* to another location, then create an empty folder called Backup in *<Profiles>\<AppData>\Apple Computer\MobileSync* and use NTFS Link to create the junction.
I've tested it out just now moving my backup folder into C:\iTunes\Backup and iTunes behaved normally during a sync of my iPhone, I'm just moving the folder to an external drive to prove it still works properly when the link is to a different drive but the move is going to take an hour! Lots & lots of tiny files... What is not so clear is how the roaming profile behaves when it meets the junction. If it backs up the link rather than following it through to the data at the other end then you should get the behaviour you are after. Test it and see.

  • Rescue & Recovery - changing backup location

I am using R&R 4.2 on a Thinkpad R61. I have three partitions setup on my hard disk - the C:, the service partition and a D: partition. I want to change the backup location to use the D: partition, but I can't find any option to do this. Is this possible and if so, how do I do it?
    Thank you.

I did manage to change the location that R&R uses, but I'm not sure how I did it! It seems that the first time you run R&R, you can change the backup location using the "Set schedule and preferences" The next time you run R&R that option doesn't appear, R&R just uses the same location. To get the option to appear again, you have to change something. I think I reinstalled R&R and deleted any R&R entries from the registry. Once the option appeared again I changed it to the D: partion. It was a long time ago, so to be honest I can't remember exactly what I did.
Do you have the same problem that you don't get the option to change the location or do you get the option, but it doesn't list all of your partitions? You could look in the registry to see if the partition is listed.

  • Windows 7 backup - recurring message after changing backup location

I backed up my Win7 Ult 64-bit pc using Windows backup to a location on my NAS ( \\NAS\Share Folder Old, say).
    Then I:
    - amended Windows backup to use a new location ( \\NAS\Share Folder New, say);
    - ran Windows 7 backup successfully (I think) to \\NAS\Share Folder New; and
    - deleted  \\NAS\Share Folder Old.
Now, whenever I start my pc, I get a message that it cannot connect to \\NAS\Share Folder Old.
No other program ever referred to \\NAS\Share Folder Old, it is not mapped to from my pc and it no longer appears (so far as I can see) anywhere in Windows Backup.
Can anyone suggest how I prevent Windows looking for \\NAS\Share Folder Old?
    Thanks,
    Alex

    Hi,
Can you give us the full error message?
Go to the following registry path:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsBackup\ScheduleParams\TargetDevice
Check the PresentableName  value, confirm it is the new backup location.

  • LR3 Changing backup location

I am using LR3.2 and have been using my old lightroom 2 catalog.
I have searched but cannot find how to:
    1. Change the catalog settings location.
I must have done something as I would still like them to drop into the catalog based on date.
I have the catalog now going to my external HDD.
Is that the best process, but today, after shooting some shots, they dumped into my computers HDD, not the catalog drive shown.
thank you... I am sure this is a newbie question.. and appreciate the guidance.

    You're welcome, Britain!
Now I'm trying to keep all of my libraries and backup on an external HD. I don't know where I would change the path.
Drag the libraries from their current location to the external drive - simply drag and drop. Then double click the library on the external drive to open it in Aperture.
Any external drive you are using to store your Aperture libraries will need to be formatted as MacOS Extended (Journaled); see this support document: Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library
If your drive has a different file system, reformat the drive as described here:  Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture
The backup drive needs to be different from the drive you are using to store the libraries, or you will have not much added safety.

  • Changing backup location.

I currently have my system setup for easy re-image of the Operating system. So my 'C:' drive is rather small. I install all application and such to other drives.
My issue is, no matter where I install it, Itunes backups are by default saved to "c:\documents and settings\'user'\application data\apple computer\mobile sync\backup". This does not work for me because I do not have the space on that drive to hold the backup. Is there a way to change where backups are saved?

You can't change the iTunes behavior, as far as I can tell.
However, you can use a feature of NTFS to point that folder to another drive. This feature is typically called a "junction" or "symbolic link".
You can use this tool to create a junction:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896768.aspx
For example, let's say you want your iPhone backup to be D: ackup. You would do this:
    1. close iTunes
    2. Move the folder c:documents and settingsuserapplication dataapple computermobile sync ackup to D:
    3. Extract the junction.zip to the Desktop.
    4. Open a command prompt and enter these commands:cd Desktop
junction D: ackup "C:Documents and SettingsusernameApplication DataApple ComputerMobile SyncBackup"
NOTE 1: Change "username" to match your current username, of course.
NOTE 2: I did not test the above! In general, junction points work OK, but only if programs don't mess with the linked directory (like rename or remove it). For example, if iTunes does something like delete the ...Mobile SyncBackup directory and then recreate it, it will no longer go to the D: ackups folder.

  • HT201210 Why can't I change the location of my device backups?

Why can't I change the location of my device backups?
iTunes seems to force me to use my c:\ drive as the destination for all backups.
Background: I have set up my c:\ drive only for programs - all data is stored on separate drives - including my iTunes library and all media. So, I can't skinny down the c:\ drive any more without uninstalling programs.
The issue is that my 10,000 rpm, 280 GB - C:\ drive is fast but small and is now FULL after I got about 1/2 way through a 128 GB backup of my ipad.  (Yes, all movies have been deleted off of the iPad to minimize the size of the backup.)
I deleted the partial iPad backup, moved all the Mobile Applications to another drive, emptied the recycle bin and tried again with my much smaller iPhone.  You guessed it: the io7 update hung and both of my devices are now paper weights.
Which leaves me f*cked, anyone know how I can un-f myself?

iTunes movies are not part of an iDevice backup.
Videos & photos you take with the camera (in the Camera roll) are part of the backup but those should be sync'd to the computer and removed from the camera roll.

  • How can I change the location for the backup from iphone to itunes?

How can I change the location for the backup from iphone to itunes? I want to backup to my external harddisk and not the computer itself. How do I do it?

Moving the iOS device backup location
Open a command prompt by hitting the start button and typing CMD<Enter> in the search box that opens up, or with Start > Run on older Windows.
To move the current backup folder from C: to D: (for example) type in this command and press <Enter>
    Move "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
Where <User> is your Windows user name.
To make iTunes look for the data in the new location type in this command and press <Enter>
    MkLink /J "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
If your preferred drive has a different letter or you already have a folder called "Backup" then edit "D:\Backup" accordingly in both commands.
If you have Windows XP then you'll need a third-party tool such as Junction to link the two locations together instead of the MkLink command. The source folder is C:\Documents and Settings\<User>\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

    hey

There are some wireless external hard drives that can be used with the iPad.
The Kingston Wi-Drive, which costs $50 for the 16 Gigabyte, and then $30 more for every 16 gigs more. It works by you turning it on and then accessing the files on it from an app that you download on your iDevice. You can access music, movies, and other stuff. No connections or anything, it works like a WiFi connection, you connect to it from the setting on the iPad under wireless networks.
Then there is the Seagate GoFlex, which some would recommend over the Wi-Drive. But this one costs $199 and had 500 Gigabytes of storage. It works the sameway as the Kingston: no wires, runs over its wireless connection. You can actually fit up to 300 HD movies on it.

  • How can I change the location of my Backups? (e.g. Word files)

I am wondering how I can change the location of my word doc. back ups. Everytime I make a new word document my computer makes a duplicate titled: " Backup [then the title I gave the word document]." I was wondering if I could make a single file to store all of the back ups. Currently they are in every file that the original is in. Thanks!

It depends on which version of Windows you are using but it will intitally be downloaded to the C: drive.  The data is initially stored in the following locations:
    Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\com.adobe.downloadassistant.AdobeDownloadAssistant\Local Store
Windows 7 and Vista:  C:\Users\[login]\AppData\Roaming\com.adobe.downloadassistant.AdobeDownloadAssistant\Local Store
You will need to get enough free space on the C: drive to allow the download.

  • Can i change the location for backup in my widows 7 ?

How can i change the location for the bacup in my windows 7?Thanks.

First, make sure iTunes isn't running
Now, move the C:\Users\(yourname)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\ folder to your preferred location. My was F:\iTunesMobileSync. This is up to you.
Finally, start a command prompt as an administrator. You can do this from the Start Menu, type cmd.exe, then right click and select Run As Administrator. From the command prompt, create an junction point as I do below, just change f:\yournewfolder with your new location. One thing to to make sure of, don't end up with a folder like f:\yournewbackupfolder\Backup\Backup, so be sure to check how your folders ended up when you moved them.
    mklink /J "C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "f:\yournewfolder\Backup"
You should see something like this in Windows 7. Note the little "shortcut" overlay icon? That's saying this is a link.
You can also confirm it with dir from the command line. Note the <junction>:
    C:\Users\Scott\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync>dir
    Directory of C:\Users\Scott\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync
    11/25/2011  10:10 PM    <DIR>          .
    11/25/2011  10:10 PM    <DIR>          ..
    11/25/2011  10:10 PM    <JUNCTION>     Backup [f:\iTunesMobileSync\Backup]
                   0 File(s)              0 bytes
                   3 Dir(s)  97,594,851,328 bytes free
If you are still on XP and not Vista or Windows 7, you don't have mklink, but you can use the junction utility in the same way.
    This works.

  • Changing iTunes backup location to SAME hard drive

    Hi
I have an unusual problem.  As you are no doubt all aware iTunes will backup your iPhone or iPad automatically to the folder (windows users) c:\users\<username>\appdata etc etc.  You can change this to another physical drive using Junction which I have read up on.  Unfortunately in my case I actually need to relocate the backups to another location on the SAME hard drive and junction doesn't appear to let me do this.
The reason?  We have a client with 50-60 computers on a Windows Server network and utilise roaming profiles.  The default backup location means these iTunes backups automatically get uploaded to the server each time a user logs off placingstorage stress on the server as there are dozens of large (32 - 64Gb iPhones and iPads) with multiple backups for each user.  I would like to make a separate folder on each users C: drive on their workstation and instruct the iTunes backups to go there instead which will keep it out of the roaming profile.
    Anybody have any ideas?
    Regards,
    Brendon

What makes you think it doesn't work?
    CD C:\Test2
    MkLink /J C:\Test1 C:\Test2
works fine for me. Test1 is linked to Test2.
